Diner Reviews
  • "Mason and Pacific is a very special restaurant. The food is out of this world, creative, thoughtful & delicious. Service is exactly right - attentive but not overwhelming - super friendly front of house staff and they have a valet - perfect! We will be back for sure. "

  • "The location, space, staff and chef are all charming. And they serve up delicious meals. Great for dinner with friends or significant other. You'll want everything on the menu even though there are some unusual items. Don't miss the potato skins, octopus or the rib eye for two. All this and you get to watch the cable cars go by, too."

  • "One of the best new restaurants in SF. World class food and the chef is very personable and creative. This will be a regular spot for us in the future."

  • "Special request for a romantic dinner to celebrate a birthday. They reserved us a quiet and single table, couldn't thing better than this beautiful table set up ! The service and meals were great ! I recommend the asparagus salad and the ribeye steak for two ! So delicious and served with many little condiments. Thanks again for this memorable dinner, we will come back !"

  • "Nice room. Knowledgable, pleasant waiter and support staff. Interesting and yummy food choices with just enough served. Nice to have another option to dine in a pleasant, warm atmosphere without pretension and attitude."

  • "We were given a nice table in a really tasteful small dining area promptly at our reservation time on a recent Friday evening. Service throughout the meal was wonderful, attentive but not overbearing. Most of the appetizers didn't appeal to us so we requested and with no problem tried the potato skins from the "sides" selections. They were different than we expected, more like potato chips with lots of excellent cheese. Fish of the day was halibut, beautiflly pan seared with interesting vegetable accompanment. Nettle raviloli was a bit too oily but worth trying. Pot de creme was one of the best I've had, seemed like milk chocolate but with a great dark chocolate bitterness. We will certainly make a return trip when in the neighborhood."

  • "The food was amazing. The octopus was the best octopus I have ever had. Wonderful pork chop, and outstanding burger on a pretzel bun. The wine list is exceptional for a restaurant of this size, everything from house wine by the carafe to noble vintages ('78 Romanee Conti). Service was discreet and unrushed despite the fact that one of our party was very late. We have just moved into the area, and this is a place we will come back to again and again."

  • "Good food and service, nice wines. Horrible hostess ! Called to say we would be 5 minutes late, she reminded us that she would have to give our table away at 7:30.Once we got there we asked what if we are not finished by then. She did not offer another table but instead said we could try at the bar. We had reserved the window table. We left without having any dessert and it was supposed to be a birthday dinner.Don't think I will come back. But our waiter was very nice and much more accommodating but this had put us in a bad mood."

  • "We had reservations but we were seated right in front of the door/hostess stand in the bar area. Last time we loved the ambiance and food, but this time, the setting was not as nice and the food we ordered was mediocre and tiny portions. I had the scallops, and $30 for two scallops that taste like average normal scallops wasn't worth it. I was starving afterwards. Our starters were similar - small portions for ~$15-18/starter. Like two bites of cheese. Last time we came we split the rib-eye and a salad and starter and loved it, but the ribeye was much more expensive than it was a few months ago and we couldn't find the other items we'd ordered. Probably won't be back, which is too bad because we loved this place our first time here."

  • "Second time at M-P and it is consistently excellent. This time we stayed on the left side of the menu; (starters, salads, burger, plus some fabulous potato skins that were light as air.) Although we ordered a bottle of wine and dessert, many SF hot spots might have been grumpy with the lack of a "big order" but not Mason Pacific. Service was low-key and very professional. I just wish this place had more tables because it is so hard to get a reservation"

  • "Wonderful time. The service was friendly, professional and attentive without being intrusive. The ribeye for two is a cut above the rest not only for the way the meat was cooked, but most notably for the various accompanying dips and sauces. My favorites were the char oil, kim chee, dried capers, and black herbed salt. Taste treat heaven! Would order again, along with crab pasta, house pinot noir, and bourbon/cornflake ice cream for dessert. Would definitely return and recommend to friends and family. Kudos for the elegant yet unpretentious "formal" dining room decor/ambience."

  • "I've been to Mason Pacific twice and am looking forward to going back again and again. Everything I've ordered has been great from the fried chicken, kale salad, scallops and risotto. The only suggestion I have is that there should be some less expensive options for wines on the menu."

  • "It's time we own up to the intolerable noise levels in San Francisco restaurants. Foreign visitors think we are savages, and I think we are. The noise in this restaurant was way over the "bomb" level. We couldn't even talk to the person right next to us. People should be warned."

  • "Unfortunately the service was HORRIBLE. Go taste the food. It was delicious. But all we talked about was how poor the service was."

  • "Our dinner was truly one of the best we have ever had! We recommend the Rib Eye for 2 (actually 3 of us shared it)! This is a MUST! Bon Appetit!"

  • "We came here to celebrate my sister-in-law's bday & it was perfect for the 4 of us! The window seats are the best & the scene is vibrant. All the dishes are amazing & tasty. Great wine selection! Service is awesome & the prices are worth the quality of food. Such a hidden neighborhood gem. Will be back soon!"

  • "A friend and I went for a drink and some light food after work. The Brussels sprouts and cauliflower were really good--the cauliflower was especially remarkable. We split the burger--also great. But for those 3 things and a couple of glasses of wine the bill was about $160. In for a penny, in for a pound I guess! It was good, and I would go back, but next time with an expense account."

  • "This was my first time here, and I would not go back. When we arrived, the relatively empty dining room reeked of fish. The hostess attempted to seat our party of 3 at a small table for 2 with an extra chair on the side. We ended up choosing to sit in the bar instead and preferred the more casual bar atmosphere. The food was not good. We ate it because we ordered it, but the dishes were ill-conceived and delivered poorly balanced flavors. Squash puree overpowered the flavorless fried feta in a starter. Risotto with parsnip, apple, and duck confit was cloying and undercooked. A slightly tough octopus starter was the bright spot. Our waiter was overbearing, bordering on rude, but his wine-pairing suggestions were helpful."

  • "I came here with my husband a week before a work event. I wanted to check out the ambiance as well as the menu. This restaurant is truly a gem. Everything was delicious, and the service could not have been better. Was great for a date, and a smaller company dinner (We had 13ppl). Will definitely go back!"

  • "The food is great with plenty of variety on the short menu. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic. The decor is lovely and the cable cars go by on Mason Street. The noise is a little loud at times."

  • "I think the wine collection was excellent! Although the 35oz Ribeye was good for itself, I think it'd better come without all the sauces or they can come with optional/ recommendation. Other than that it was just a great place to hangout with your friends. Also be aware of that if you have 2 or more than 3 in your party, you are more likely to be sit in the "formal" dining area. The casual place is for 1 or 3 people's party. That's about it."

  • "Trying to be fair to the chef I'll just say: take the chicken sals off the menu I'm sure you can do better than that!! Feta app.. Same.. Maybe work on Sundays too."

  • "Our evening at Mason/Pacific was very disappointing all around. Especially the server. Rude, rushed, entitled attitude toward our entire table. Food just mediocre. I have been to Mason Pacific prior, We will not return again or recommend this to others..."

  • "Everything we tried was delicious. Highly recommend the octopus, rib eye for two, mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, hamburger. Excellent service. Jose is very friendly and makes you feel part of the neighborhood. Will have to go back!"

  • "We enjoyed a fabulous meal here last week and ver much look forward to coming back. The rib eye for two was well worth the price given all of the accessories that it came with. The bok choy with dehydrated kimchi was also fantastic! there wasn't anything that I would change about the experience."

  • "I had heard Mason and Pacific had one of the top burgers, so I ventured over to find out. I was thoroughly impressed with all dishes but the burger made the night. The pretzel bun is fantastic and the meat is perfectly cooked. Highly recommend coming here if you are craving a good gourmet burger."

  • "We had a family birthday dinner for our 2 children - one of whom is a junior foodie. The staff were accommodating to our children. We were fortunate to be seated in the front booth so the kids could watch the Mason-Powell line cable cars go by (but everyone requests this table). APPETIZERS: The Duck Confit Rillette (a French bread spread made of Duck or Pork and then immersed in fat) is superb and the Fried Chicken appetizer was delicious. MAIN ENTREES: Risotto (very good), Hamburger (excellent).. The New York Strip was good, but I would have liked the Ribeye for Two (~38 ounces), but that would probably have been too much meat for us. DESSERT: Pot de Creme (chocolate with crushed peanuts on top) served in a small Le Creuset pot - a MUST."

  • "Just a fun, not-too-fancy neighborhood spot with great food and service. In my mind it just stands out as how a restaurant should be run."

  • "I was struck by the brief size of the menu when I sat down. But as I looked it over, the menu had a very nice, seasonal mix and it was easy to fill my food needs. When the food arrived, I forgot about the menu size and really enjoyed the dishes. Excellent balance and refined presentation. The room is very comfortable and the service was excellent. All told, a very nice spot for dinner."

  • "Went on a date here with my fiance and we were blown away. The dinner and wine menu is top notch - too many decisions. I have heard the burger is one of the best in the city, but we went with the fish and beet salad. Felt like I ate a healthy meal and it was fantastic. Cant wait to go back."

  • "Limited menu with a burger as a strange choice for an upscale restaurant. Fish of day was not fish which left dining companion with nothing on the menu she could eat. No effort to accommodate. Generally, underwhelming."

  • "As a visitor to SF, I was delighted to find this restaurant off the beaten path and not a tourist trap like so many restaurants I have found on past visits. Perfect vibe for a date or dinner with friends. Menu is small, but everything me and my dining companion tried was excellent."

  • "I went here for the first time with another girlfriend. I had the taglietelle with crab and it was delicious. My friend had the risotto with duck confit and it was very bland. The waiter asked us how are meals were and she asked him for some salt because it was too bland. He looked perturbed at the request and brought some salt. That did not solve the problem. A different woman returned to our table with some of the glaze the chef puts over the risotto and said he probably didn't put enough. Problem solved. Unfortunately by the time that came she only had about 1/4 left of the dish to pour it on. Small menu but I would go again and to see what another experience would be like there."
