A word from MarketBar
MarketBar is San Francisco's answer to Grand Central Station but on the water in the restored landmark Ferry Building. The casual menu offers many of the organic ingredients sold in the thrice-weekly farmer's market as well as the shops filling the interior of the building. Full Bar, creative wine list and seasonal market driven menu attracts a cross section of the city's diners to its handsome dining room, comfortable bar and spectacular outdoor sidewalk terrace.

**We do not take reservations for the patio. We seat only complete parties on a first come first serve basis.

  • "This was my first time visiting the Marketbar. Great place if you're not entertaining clients but the service is not up to par for entertaining large account clients. The bartender was arrogant and rude. The service was extremely slow. Believe it or not I had to ask the hostess to find our server at one point. The staff could use a little training. The food appearance was nice however bland. When the salt is passed around the table it's not a good sign. If I'm ever back it would be a burger and fries. That's very hard to mess up."

  • "My sister, son and I met for a quiet delicious lunch where we could talk and enjoy some good food. I had an omlette which was fine, but not exceptional. My sister had the trout which she clearly enjoyed. My son had the deviled eggs with crab. He said it was spicier than he expected but he liked it. They have a great shellfish platter, but no one was in the mood. I can't wait to here again, but I won't order the omlette."

  • "A disappointing lunch with friends visiting town. Cream of asparagus soup was bland and came to the table lukewarm. Uneventful grilled cheese sandwich - where's the cheese? Cesar salad was overdressed, nothing special. Their great location isn't worth paying the price for mediocre food."

  • "I live in San Diego and have always enjoyed having brunch at Marketbar when I visit San Francisco. But my last visit was not up to par with my past visits.food was so-so. I can live with that since it's always been great in my past visits. What I can not live with and what will discourage me from coming back is the service. It took my waiter about 15 mins to serve me coffee and another 30 minutes before he realized my cup was empty and refilled it. Which I actually had to tell him to do. We were only checked on once by him after our food was brought out and I had to remind him 3 times to bring me the check. I hate being that person who has to wave down my waiter."

  • "We went to Market Bar on Tuesday March 11, 2014. There were 7 of us from a business conference. Charlie/Charles was our server and he was TERRIBLE! He rarely showed up at the table, we waited at least 20 minutes between water to drink order to dinner order to after dinner drinks and desserts. 20 minutes EACH time. We all ran out of water. He just didn't care. Too bad for him since we were all ordering drinks and desserts. The food is excellent. Braised short ribs with crab mac n cheese was excellent. Location is fun and energetic too. Just too bad our service was the worst in San Francisco."

  • "I threw a farewell party here for my co-worker. I decided to pre-order our lunches. The food came just as we sat down. We were able to enjoy our food leisurely and still had time left to socialize. Everyone in the group had something positive to say about their orders. Some mentioned wanting to come back for a repeat experience in the near future. I would have gladly given MarketBar a five star had the service been just a bit warmer and the waitstaff attitude been more accommodating. We were not a demanding bunch, yet the waitstff seemed a bit "disgruntled" when bringing us our food. This was at 11:45 a.m. before the lunch crowds started. I'd hate to imagine how it might have been had we not pre-ordered."

  • "We tried this for the first time and weren't sure we wanted to sit outside until we arrived and the sun was breaking through. The umbrellas provided good shade, so much so that my son was too chilly so we moved to a sunnier table and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Great menu. I had just begun a food elimination diet for inflamation and found a few things there, but I want to return for some of the exotic egg dishes. Nice bar menu, too, but we stayed with delicious coffee."

The team even helped us to find a place to enjoy late into the night since we were tourists to the town. This will be a go to place the next time I am in town and going out.   • "We go to brunch here, sit in the sun & eat the fried egg sandwich & burger. They're fantastic for that. I took my wife for v-dat dinner sinbce we've spend nice times on the patio. We sat inside now bc it was cold out. Sucked. They were too busy for the 1.5 waiters to keep up inside. 15 mins before we got up to ask for service. The menu was way limited -some v-day custom lineup. I had short ribs and she had mushroom ravioli. Mine was very tasty, but was obviously pre-fab. Airplane style. Her dish sucked -a zero. We told our beleaguered waiter and they comped her dish/wine. That was classy. It bums me out that MarketBar wasn't as...nice as I'd assumed. It's a great patio. People are really nice too -if a bit hapless at times."

It's also good if you have people in your party who like comfort food and others who are more adventurous. Fish & chips are popular. The service can be slow. Hard to get in and out in less than an hour and a half."

  • "I scheduled a business lunch here. We ordered the fixed price lunch special. We both had the grilled scallops (meaning one small scallop sliced into three thin pieces) on a bed of soggy spinach with nondescript sauce as the starter. Not impressed. I had the shrimp risotto with spring peas as my main. I'm not sure how you suck that much flavor out of food by cooking it, but water was definitely a factor. It was very runny risotto. Actually overcooked rice standing in unflavored water--it was not risotto. The shrimp must have steamed with the rice. The entire thing was unseasoned, bland, boring. My friend's steak was comparably average, but she liked the spicy green sauce and roasted potatoes. $100 for the two was way too much."

  • "I had not been here in a while but thought I would give it a shot - with a client. Never again. One of us got served. They forgot to put the other order in. We had the fish and chips and deviled eggs. The eggs were good, the FnC were average. Server was behind the 8 ball but didn't seem to care much. So overall. Was not impressed. Its a shame really given their location. To many better options around the waterfront. Do not recommend and wont go back. I had several colleagues warn me before I went. TofT and wished I hadn't."

  • "We had a nice brunch, everyone's food was tasty, especially the pancakes. The servers were prompt, friendly and attentive, yet unobtrusive. The only objection I have to Market Bar is the restroom situation. Ridiculous. First of all, this restaurant is huge, with a giant dining room, a bar and the front patio. But the only place to use the restroom is in the mall area of the Ferry Building itself. The line for the women's room was thirty people long. (I counted.) This restaurant should provide its own restrooms for its customers. I ended up being gone for 25 minutes during the meal. :("

  • "Great dinner. We had the petrale sole and ahi and both where great. The staff was very attentive as well. I was surprised it wasn't more crowded. While the main attraction is the outdoor seating at the Ferry Building, I thought the indoor bar area could use a lot more ambiance (perhaps that explained the rather quiet bar scene at 6:30 in the evening). Other than that small suggestion, its a great place for quality food and beverage."

  • "Enjoyed the Grilled Wild Hawaiian Swordfish, which was seated on a bed of wilted spinach and dotted around the edge with tiny cubes of sunchokes & chorizo....lightly drizzled with a preserved lemon vinaigrette. The portion was perfect, delicious and just an overall great presentation and taste. I was especially delighted that our wait person did not up sell with appetizers or desserts....it made the dining experience all the more pleasurable."

  • "We ferried over from Alameda during a gorgeous sunset, enjoyed our meal and the lightshow on the bridge and ferried back, making it a delightful, romantic, serendipitous experience that we will recommend to our friends. I had made reservations which was important given that we had just two hours before our return ferry trip and the fact that the wait time for our food was on the slow side. We ordered the blackened ahi tuna and the short ribs. Both were delicious although the tuna was more peppery than I usually like. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Tables are close and the noise level was on the high side, but we were able to visit well enough."

  • "Although the wait staff was nice, they obviously didn't have enough staff to keep everyone satisfied. We had noticed that a party of 7 that were seated well ahead of us, didn't get served until after we had eaten. We waited an extra 10 minutes just looking for our server for the bill. I normally wouldn't mind the wait, but this was a work day, at lunchtime. And tho during the holidays, and busy time, the establishment should have been prepared. The food however, was good. The crab risotto was delicious and the caesar was fresh, although it needed more "snap" in the dressing (no anchovies/lemon - it was missing something)."
