A word from Marché Moderne
Driven by a passion for market-inspired ingredients and classic French cooking techniques, Florent and Amelia Marneau have created a truly modern French bistro in the heart of Orange County. For decades, the couple worked separately in some of the best kitchens in France and Orange County. With Marché Moderne, they have followed this natural evolution by combining their culinary careers as independent restaurateurs. The contemporary French Bistro which has been critically acclaimed since its opening in spring of 2007, is located at The Penthouse at South Coast Plaza, level three, adjacent to Nordstrom. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Lunch was fantastic, the cheese board was outstanding - our server's selection. Can't wait to go back"

  • "Been here many times, probably the best food in OC. Highly recommend."

  • "wonderful and authentic French food. Chef is tremendous. Best in OC, easy"

  • "This is our favorite restaurant in Orange County. Overall, our service has been excellent with one exception during a lunch, and we were not charged for the lunch because of their oversights. One complaint: those uncomfortable tables and chairs lined up along the side of the dining room. Our favorite way to dine there is sitting at the bar. The food is always wonderful."

  • "Good food but I would not exactly call it French Cuisine It's more Continental. Service is good but not over the top"
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "Always a delight and easily the best food in Orange County"

  • "I have never been disappointed in anything (food, service, ambiance) at this restaurant. I didn't rate the ambiance as excellent because it has a little bit of a more casual vibe - with tablecloths! Always bringing new friends here who haven't had the experience of this wonderful gem in a shopping mall!"

  • "Easily one of the best restaurants in OC! It never disappoints!"

  • "After many excellent meals at MM, this time we came away disappointed. The appetizers were quite good but the main courses and dessert failed to impress. They were not "bad" but just seemed to fall below what was expected from such a highly rated restaurant. As usual, the service was quite good."

  • "Florent has added new dishes again and again he amazes. Starting with the rabbit terrine with cornichon/pickled onion/mustard and french salt then the grilled octopus followed by the calimari both from the small plates menu finishing with Amelia's wonderful Napolean with berry sorbet yummmm and of course Champagne to start it all. Best restaurant in Orange County"

  • "Dining at Marche Moderne is a treat. The vibe is a bit quiet and low key, no doubt a result of being tucked away on the 3rd floor of SCP and the fact that they close rather early. The ambiance strikes a careful balance between a sophisticated modern restaurant and a provincial bistro. Everything works together to allow for the main event to shine through: the Food. Everything we ate at Marche Moderne was spot on. Our oysters were crisp and briny, paired with a duo of mignonettes. My mussels were plump & perfect, served in the most amazing broth of white wine and herbs. Desserts were perfect as well; modern executions of classic french standards. The wine list however trends towards being a bit too expensive and could use some underdogs."

  • "In my opinion,Marché Moderne is the beat restaurant in OC, The lunch set menu is only 25 dollar. But it is very worthy. The appetizer、entree、dessert even the bread is great! Love it!"

  • "Perhaps the only restaurant in Orange County with true customer service, professionals, fantastic food, small intimate space(ironically in a shopping mall), absolutely our favorite in the OC. Refreshingly focused on food and service, a real delight."

  • "my friend ate a rizotto but so salty!! I ate chicken roast ,it was good."

  • "We have dinerd at Marche Moderne many times but not recently. It is our favorite restaurant to visit when we are in Orange County. And whenever we visit (we live in Los Angeles) we have either lunch or dinner there! We were VERY disappointed this vist. The menu is very different and not to our liking at all. Before we always found some wonderful little gem to try with great results. This time the dishes (there were four of us) were rather disappointing. I even asked if the restaurant had a new chef and was told it is the same chef/owner. I don't thenk we will visit again!"

  • "Parts were great: the service, the wine, the bread, the cheese plate, the duck Parts not great: trying to have a romantic meal with my wife and being seated next to a loud, boisterous business group. The desert was so so."

  • "Went here to celebrate my fiance's birthday and who knew this place existed? I always walked by and wondered how it was. I'd recommend ordering all small places so you can taste a great variety. We shared 5 plates and a dessert and it was way too much. Favorites were the bone marrow, urchin w/guacamole, and charcuterie."

  • "We love this restaurant and enjoyed a birthday dinner with our out of town guest. Food is delicious although we thought the menu was somewhat limited. Please to see that the corkage fee is only $15. Desserts to die for."

  • "We have been at Modern Marche many times. Each time the place is packed and the food is always good. This time we arrived early so there were plenty of seats. Food is good as usual and their twice fried fries is to die for! I recommend this "gem" at South Coast Plaza to any visitors or out of town guests too."

  • "Marche never fails to disappoint. Some of the indoor tables are a little "close" for comfort. but that is the only downside in this always delicious OC gem. Fine dining in the mall? Yes, really. Hardest part of eating here is choosing what to order since there are so many amazing options."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "We think this is the best resturant in OC. Though the last couple of times some of the food has not been as good check some of it was excellent like the lasagna and filet."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Marche is our go-to for special occasions. The only odd thing is it's in a mall. We wonder why that choice, instaed of a free-standing site. Our table had sweetbreads, steak tartare & shortribs- all done perfectly. Appetizers were excellent (beet salad, petit choux with pancetta & a cheese board.) We were celebrating a landmark birthday, which I noted in my Open Table reservation, but all they did was add a candle to an ordered desert- a bit disappointling for our table where a significant amount of money was spent (food, cocktails & wine.)"

  • "arrived and was led to the worst table in the house, even though there were only two other parties there. had to ask to be moved. Coq a vin gravy was awful, the two large sea scallops okay but over priced. The wines and cocktails were also over priced. The service was excellent"

  • "This is a great place for true foodie's in the O.C. area. I have been coming here for the last 3 years and have not had anything that I did not like. This is not a good place to bring small kids. It's better suited for a night out with the wife or date or a couple of good friends. Be sure to make reservations in advance."

  • "Marche Moderne has been our favorite place to dine in for special occasions. Besides getting our fav table #20, food, service & ambiance is all there, not to mention reasonably priced. BUT, the Spontane Menu is also a must try!"
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "Liked the lamb shank lunch special but the one with pasta with shrimp and scallops was lacking in flavor. The apple and parsnip soup was also disappointing since it had no apple or parsnip flavor to it. However an off meal here is still better than most meals in other restaurants."

  • "excellent food...cooked perfectly. wonderful flavors."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "We really enjoyed the 3 course prix fix lunch. It changes every few days and it is always the perfect combination of flavors. And a very good value. The Hazelnut Pavlova was the dessert this time and it was outstanding."

  • "Enjoyed the ambiance, great service. Food was good, but for the price, it wasn't that spectacular. The chopped salad was very good and nicely presented. We had the Seabream fish with tiny potatoes and artichokes with a reduction sauce. My fish was not cooked in the middle of one side, so disappointed in that. The wine list is impressive, but pricey. The Blanc Mange' was served in a tiny narrow glass and was refreshing. My biggest disappointment was that I had called the afternoon of my reservation and told them we were celebrating a birthday. They did nothing. Later I found out whoever took my message hadn't passed the message on to the wait staff. Other than apologizing, they did nothing, not even comping the dessert."

  • "Shopping malls rarely offer great dining options. This is the exception. Tasting menu for my spouse, a la carte for me. Bring your own top shelf wine and pay the $15 corkage if you want to save money. But that isn't the point. The food is outstanding. Be sure to make reservations!"

  • "The best of everything tucked away inside South Coast Plaza."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "If you are looking for a fancy upscale place to compliment the level of shopping at this mall this is your place. Not only is the food good but the presentation is remarkable. The wait service is outstanding."

  • "A great meal is no longer guaranteed, but most of the time the food is excellent. This last time the meal was nothing special. We shared an appetizer of sausage with Chinese green beans. The sausage was delicious, but the dish had a basalmic sauce that over powered it. The whole wheat bread was stale. For my main dish, I wanted duckbut it was not on the menu. I don't eat beef and there were only a couple of fish besides scallops; I ordered seabream and my husband got John Dory. Mine was tasty, but the John Dory was so bland. The blanc mange and the macaron were very good, but not memorable. I was disappointed that the price range for wines by the glass is much narrower than in the past. Our server was very knowledgeable and personable."

  • "I have been eating at Marché Moderne regularly since it opened several years ago. Of about 20 meals I have eaten there, only one has been less than perfect and I think this was on a night when the chef was not there. Dinner, lunch, light bites -- always high quality ingredients and imaginative combinations and presentations. No crazy molecular stuff. Every restaurant has a beet and goat cheese salad but the one at Marché is just better. Service is always attentive and professional. This particular lunch was as good as ever. The prices have gone up over the years, so I don't go as frequently, but I always feel I get my money's worth."

  • "Marche Moderne is one of our favorite restaurants! When we head North to Orange County or L.A. we always stop for lunch and often arrange 'meet halfway for lunch' dates with Los Angeles family at this wonderful spot. The food is truly 'fit for foodies' and the service is knowledgable, friendly and efficient."

  • "This terrific restaurant is rapidly moving up our list to the top few in the greater LA area. Literally everything this chef and his wife make is off-the-chart excellent, including the set price lunch menu items like the scallops and shrimp dish. The crab appetizer is actually shockingly good. The west side of LA is in the process of being replaced by Manhattan Beach and Marche Moderne as the premier dining experiences in So. Cal., at least for us. And the overall environment is vastly better as well. The one exception is Republique."

  • "For starters, I ordered chopped salad - light, citrus taste. Refreshing. My companion ordered king crab and he said it was good. For entree, I ordered appetizer pork belly. Crunchy top, very tasty. But on the sweet side. My companion refused to have anything else but the coq au vin. Heavenly, he said. Tender, slow- cooked chicken with mushrooms and carrots. Only issue, when we ordered more bread, we had to remind our waitress. Otherwise, very friendly staff, accommodating us coming 45 min earlier than our reservation."

  • "Lovely restaurant! We had a wonderful experience - great food, great ambiance! My only comment is that the wait staff was not always quick to refill my glass of wine."
