  • "We happened to pick the night of the West Seattle Street Fair with hundreds of people in the street and bands playing right in front of the restaurant. So it was extremely busy and loud. The food was quite tasty and the friend chicken was delicious and crispy. The drinks were good and interesting. The booth seating was a little uncomfortable."

  • "A group of seven of us came in for dinner Saturday 01/28. I was the only one who'd been in to Ma'ono and I've been talking it up. The food and service did not disappoint and everyone had a really good time. We ordered a bunch of pupus + the fried chicken. We especially loved the Spam Musubi, Kalua Pig Tacos, Shoyu Tombo Poke and of course the fried chicken. Sorry, I didn't catch our servers' name but he had dark hair and a full beard. He was great, very knowledgeable of the menu and made helpful suggestions. He had a good sense of humor and seemed to have fun with our somewhat boisterous group. Thanks Ma'ono, we'll be back!"

  • "Had a wonderful meal - food was fantastic - but it was hard to enjoy it in a baking hot restaurant, even though it was only 70 degrees outside. Really want to go back, but might need to wait until winter since it unfortunately made us want to rush out (and obviously we weren't alone with that, looking at the larger crowd)."

  • "Food was delicious - absolutely amazing! Bottomless mimosas were good and kept on coming the entire time we were there. Service was great for our large group. We will definitely be coming back. It was a bit loud when we were there, but I think that was due to two large groups being right next to each other and not sure if it is always that way."

  • "Place has excellent potential and a great cocktail list. The drinks were amazing and the food tasty, but very heavily salted (and I like salt). At first we thought it was a fluke (someone got a little heavy handed and Oops! it's hard to go back). But it was not just one or two dishes, but every. single. one. And by the time we noticed, we were really hungry and didn't want to complain and wait for another order, which I'm sure would have been provided, as the service was great. I hope to go back so that I can remember more about the food than the sodium level."

  • "I reserved a table for Fathers Day and received a call that day to let me know that fried chicken orders were low and given the option to order ahead of time, I'm so glad I did, the fried chicken was fantastic. We also tried the edamame, spam musubi and kahlua pork tacos. Everything was delicious, my stepson is sold on spam musubi, loved the pickled plum added in. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Two of us split a whole chicken and an order of roasted carrots, with drinks (one of us had a cocktail and a beer, the other, two neat whiskies). Service was very attentive and much faster than we expected. The drinks were delicious. The chicken was outstanding, but the sides that accompany it at night (white rice with a little of what I think was green tea on top and a pot of kimchee) did not work for me. The carrots, however, were outstanding. And if you get the chicken at brunch, it comes with a buscuit and a side of gravy - and that makes the chicken even better, so from now on I am coming here for brunch rather than dinner. The meal was about $100 plus tip, but there was enough chicken that we had it for dinner the next night , too."

  • "We had a reservation for 5 and they jammed us into a book for 4 plus added a chair that was in the way of everyone - there was NO room for food! The whiskey drinks must have been made for juveniles as there was absolutely NO flavor on the 5 different drinks we ordered. Chicken was okay, but don't understand the hype. Loco Moco was a mishmash of foods that didn't taste good together. The fatty saimin was okay, nothing special. One in our party did order the burger and she said it was good, so kudos there. The heat was stifling in the restaurant! 4 of the 5 of us are from O'ahu and this food never came close to even the worst Hawaiian meal we had there. We'd go somewhere else next time."

  • "Service started out friendly but slow. Ordered a glass of wine that didn't come until after we were done with the pupus - and the place wasn't even busy. Then as the meal progressed, our waiter's personality changed from pleasant and helpful, to silent and rude! We were perplexed with the sudden change in mood, we're certain it wasn't anything we did or said, it was quite weird! Anyway, had the fried chicken, moist and crispy; broccoli was good; but overall, like a few of the other reviewers, nothing to get real excited about. We had to ask for a box to pack the leftovers, then had to ask for our check and when the waiter brought it, he just threw it on our table without even a thank you!"

Loved the kimchi and pickles, nice compliment to the protein. We are also fans of the Masubi and Pork Cracklings. Will be heading back again, and again (although I do miss Spring Hill - that food was amazing in its own right)."

  • "There is no shortage of great spots to eat in Seattle, and there is no shortage of great brunch spots amongst them. Don't deny yourself the chance to dine at Ma'ono--and do so at the weekend. My server, Edward, was right when he said that choosing food at this place is difficult, as everything on the menu sounds superb. Having been here before, I knew he wasn't kidding, and I really did have my heart set on trying something I hadn't ever had: the quiche maybe, or the French toast (with its grilled pineapple). Instead, I opted for my favourite, Loco Moco, because Ma'ono's is spicier than others and because I knew I would pair it with the sweetness of the Portuguese rolls. Oh, my, what a fabulous meal--and the only one I needed that day!"

From the excellent service (thanks Chad!) to the incredible array of flavors on the table, this little spot really knows how to do it. Our first visit was for a full dinner with friends...our next will be soon, and might just be a nice casual afternoon drink with some pupus. Ma'ono seems suited to cater to everything from brunch to a late night snack."

I've avoided this pickled fermented cabbage food and will continue to do so, the smell alone, so what was nice when my order came with Kimchi it was in a jar so I just kept it closed. The 1/2 crispy chicken was extra fried, it was Ok, not real juicy and too much layer of crust for me. I loved the ambiance, very casual but trendy. Service was great also! "

  • "We had the pleasure of eating at Ma'ono for Mother's Day. I say pleasure because the food is AMAZING!!!! Must preorder chicken, might be sold out, so I had done that. The food was seriously awesome. Our waitress had a serious chip on her shoulder, dampened our experience. There were several incidents but one that stuck out was that she seemed bothered when my husband asked for a different wine glass cause the one that she had given him was really dirty, then took a very long time to replace. Hopefully next time we get a different waitress."

Artful decor with a contemporary, yet casual vibe, was a perfect setting to partake in the "ono eats" - with a taste of Hawaii to tempt our tastebuds. Love the perfectly prepared fried chicken specialty and delicious trout, along with a bevy of sides to compliment the main dishes. Service was good and the dining experience pleasant.   • "I had been dying to try Ma'ono for a while, and Mother's Day seemed to be the perfect occasion. Despite the typical West Seattle challenges (traffic and lack of parking), we arrived on time and were seated promptly. It was very lively and loud at 6:00 on Saturday, but the crowd died down by 7:00, which may be because Mother's Day was the next day. In addition to the fried chicken which we had pre-ordered (I appreciated the reminder call), we ordered the cucumbers (excellent), sweet bread (excellent), mac salad (fantastic), and Ma'ono Saimin as well as Fatty Saimin for the kids. All were great. We especially enjoyed the cucumbers and the kimchee that comes with the chicken. We tried all the desserts (there were three options). "

  • "Ma'ono is my new favorite West Seattle restaurant. This place literally has the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. Additionally, I had a very unique beer based cocktail that was incredibly good. Ma'ono has a very unique menu with Hawaiin inspired food and beverages and it is a nice departure from typical Pacific Northwest fare. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. "

  • "I went with a party of 5 to Ma'ono for brunch on a Sunday. We were late to our reservation by 10 minutes, but our table was still reserved! There was a party in front of us (who didn't have reservations) and were told the wait would be an hour. I am extremely glad that I made a reservation! We were seated right away and had such a great experience with the food and the service. Our waitress was great at refilling our mimosas and waters while not trying to interrupt our conversations. I will return again!"

  • "We've been to Ma'ono many times and always have a great time. Although we told him we had been there many times before, he second-guessed our ordering. He felt the need to explain the difference between the green salad and the stir-friend greens (duh!). My husband and I were sharing a chicken, one of our friends ordered a large plate, and our other friend ordered two small plates. Unfortunately, our waiter apparently didn't understand that was her dinner and brought them out as we were finishing our salads but well before the chicken and her husband's entree came out, so the hot item she ordered was cold by the time the rest of the food came. He did give us a good wine recommendation and was pleasant and enthusiastic, though."

  • "When food blogs, media critics and the generally snobby foodie friend hypes up the chicken from Ma'ono, it creates a sense of hype that both helps and works against the establishment. The chicken was not bad, but it was definitely not great either. The batter was rather bland and dense. The chicken was moist; that was the only saving grace. Many of the savory menu items, or accompaniments, were too salty (i.e. saimin, sausage gravy, macaroni, etc.). I'll return, but only on a full stomach...just for drinks. "

  • "Only one table for a large party. We had a reservation at 9:30 and the restaurant seemed closed because it was so dark from the outside and the block they were on was dead. The hostess was all frowns and not friendly at all. We felt like we were messing them up because our reservation was so late. Took a while for a waitress to come by to take our drink order and by then the restaurant was pretty empty. The food is why you come. We preordered fried chicken which is what they are known for. We also loved their burger, spam musubi, veggies, pork tacos. Whiskey drink Napoleons Kick was amazing, we returned the Dirty Diana it was way too strong. I'm from Hawaii so i can attest to its authenticity. Want to come back and try their brunch."
