A word from Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge
We call ourselves a “southern table and refuge”because that’s exactly what we are. A place to enjoy casual, yet refined country cuisine where you’re treated like family and can seek respite from the world in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that pays tribute – in every way – to all that’s great about the great South.

From the reclaimed wood from a Florence, South Carolina, water tower that brings warmth to our space, to the authentic Alabama railroad ties from which to hang your hat, Mama’s Boy is putting the “South” in South Norwalk. As for the food? Fabulously fresh, locally sourced, lovingly prepared. You’ll find all your southern favorites, from classic shrimp and grits to country fried game hen, with a modern Mama’s Boy twist…because we like to present “low country” in high style.

  • "Delicious food, bottomless mimosas, and the infectious sounds of Lipbone Redding made for an awesome brunch experience."

  • "Mama's Boy reminds me of other restaurants down south that put good old comfort food on the table. The food and beverages were quite good and the wait staff was polite and friendly, just a bit slower than my NY energy level is used to. I'd surely go back on an occasion when I wasn't pressed for time! Our party of four were served Sirloin steak, their featured Chicken recipe and a fish dish. All were delicious and nicely presented. I only wish I had enough time to try some of the fantastic looking desserts.. Next time!"

  • "Unique, lively and fun experience with a menu unlike anything else in fairfield county."

  • "Nice restaurant with good food and service. However, portions are a bit small for the price. Otherwise, enjoyed the experience overall."

  • "Great spot for brunch that can accomodate large groups. Excellent food and great selection of drinks."

  • "We had bewen to the restaurant on another occasion and, for some reason, had a better experience. The waitperson was attentive and helpful, but the brunch was not as memorable as had been the other occasion, which was a lunch. One person in our party ordered hash, which turned out to be a bunch of dry potatoes, not the usual dish oine thinks of as hash. The waitperson, upon request, brought Hollandaise, which helped. It was noisy, which didn't really bother us, but we'd recommend sitting in the back room, not the front which had not only a bar but a musician. It's not a place we'd put on our regular list of destinations, although it has attractive features and a pleasant staff."

  • "the layout of the seating arrangements is long and narrow and the noise barrels through like a sound tunnel. The noise from surrounding tables and the conversations that were held at a shouting level ruined our time. The only way anyone can be heard there is to shout. The waiters must be half deaf at the end of their shifts. The food needed to be sent back to the kitchen to be cooked properly but the management and staff were very helpful and professional. The unattractive space and high noise levels will be difficult for this restaurant to overcome. Its a shame because the concept is interesting."

  • "Food is delicious, tried the low-country bouillabaisse, husband had the cornbread crusted catfish. Both were excellent. Specialty cocktails are yummy too, though my husband did not care for the okra martini. Great atmosphere, definitely will come back, especially want to try brunch."

  • "We haven't had food this good in a long, long time. Mama taught her boy well. The food is expertly prepared and well presented. We had crab cake and she crab soup for appetizers, shrimp and grits and sweet potato gnocchi for the main event, and even found room for a giant slab of the cake of week. Oh, and let's not forget the little corn muffins with the house's pepper jelly. Each and every thing was superb. If I lived near South Norwalk, I'd be back again and again. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, and worked well as a team on a busy, busy night. The restaurant is pretty loud, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic evening, this might not be the place, but DO try it on a night when you're feeling lively."

  • "I cant believe it took me a year to find this gem. The food was awesome and so was the scene. This is my new spot."

  • "This was a return trip for us. The food is still excellent. The menu seemed more limited than the first time. If there were any specials they weren't read to us. We wish they had kept the half plates on the menu. We will be back"

  • "Decent wine list. Appetizers were terrific. Both entrees, chicken and fillet were delicious. Dessert cheese plate was just ok."

  • "Food was creative and outstanding! Brick bourbon chicken and sea bass main dishes were perfect. Fried oyster appetizer was great! Good wine list, interesting mixed drinks. A little crowded and noisy but fun!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner for three the other night at Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge. We enjoyed the BLT salad with fried Green tomatoe as well as the chopped salad. The pork chip was excellent, the shrimp and grits are not to be missed and the sea bass was lovely. Save room for dessert! We had a coconut cake and a carrot cake. Both were delicious. Our waiter was attentive and caring. The atmosphere was lively, not too loud and the overall restaurant had great energy. Sunday brunch at this establishment is also amazing with fabulous bloody Marys, special cocktails, live music and delicious brunch treats! A wonderful addition to the Southern CT dining scene."

  • "2nd time here. Sunday brunch was OUTSTANDING. Coffee was rich and strong, eggs benedict was perfect - hollandaise perfectly herbed and slightly lemony, thinly sliced proscuitto as the ham, grit cakes instead of english muff. Perfect bitter greens salad to complement, in lieu of potatoes. YUM! Hubby had the chicken-fried pork belly (thick bacon) atop of shrimp grits and sunnyside up egg. SO good. Said it was one of the top 5 breakfast/brunches he's had in his life. Portions are substantial. Order the pastry basket for the table to share- the pecan pastry was heaven. Our server was lovely and on top of her game - we had a great early seating at 11:15ish. From 1-4, unlimited mimosas and live music, for more leisurely PM folks. GO!"

  • "You must try the filet entree!! It is heavenly. Also the Farmers Board, a great starter for the table to share. Easily could have just had that as a meal... full of charcuterie goodness, lots of local cheeses, amazing house made foie gras sausage and smoked duck. Will definitely go back to try brunch, many interesting menu items. Not for those watching their waistline, but definitely a great find of southern inspired noms."

  • "Enjoyed fried oysters on salad and pulled pork sandwich. Side dish of mac n cheese good-ish -- the cheese was creamy but bland. Excellent chocolate pecan pie; carrot cake a disappointment -- cake dry and flavorless, cream cheese icing gluey. Service was excellent. Attracts many kids during lunch given proximity to Aquarium. We requested the back room and were happily accommodated."

  • "Went there on a date to hear "Otis & The Hurricanes" New Orleans music and was very pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food and service. The music was awesome. The Gluten-free indications on the menu were crucial. I normally don't write reviews. I would have given a five star on this one except that, although we reserved at 8 pm on Sat. night, we had to wait at the bar until about 8:30 before we were seated. The staff and management ketp appologizing profusely and bought us a round of drinks as compensation. Nice. We had the Biouillabese for two. It was a substantial and very tasty dish full of shrimps, scallops and mussels. We couldn't finish it all. The garlic/wine broth was incredible. The music and dance were great."

  • "When we arrived we were greeted with "You're table is ready, but we are fully booked, so you need to be finished by..... Not the greeting we expected, guess the reservation following ours was more important. There were several tables around us vacant, we asked for a different table (which was not next to children) and were told they were booked - 2nd strike. Food was good, but felt rushed. Table next to us were told the same. Don't think we will return."

  • "Food, Service and band were excellent. Prices were a bit high but in line with other restarants in Sono. The They also had a band that which was very good. There were two issues that made me give only 3 starts instead of 4. They ran out of all deserts except for ice cream. Also had to wait a full hour for our table and we had a reservation. People next to us at the bar also waited a very long time, they complained and got free drinks. We were nice about it so just got apologies. I think they should have given us drinks while standing and waiting an hour for a table as well or comped something at our meal, some bread or an app or something. All said I would definatley go back again, food and ambience were great as was the music."

  • "I went here with five others a couple of weeks ago then again with two friends two nights ago (because I couldn't wait any longer to go back). It was so great that I decided to write a review on Open Table for the first time. First, you must have a cocktail. I tried both the scarlet O and the whiskey sour and both were phenomenal. To start, The BLT Salad is a must as are the deviled eggs. The shrimp and grits and the bouillabaisse are excellent! Finally, I am usually disappointed by restaurant cakes in particular but Mama's Boy served the best carrot cake I've ever had. Plus they had an amazing chocolate cake that was super moist and had great add ins like toasted almonds. And banana pie creme brûlée! Go! You'll love it!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went to dinner at Mama's Boy for Valentine's Day and it was amazing! I am allergic to both wheat/gluten and dairy and the restaurant not only called me to confirm our reservation but the hostess also asked me about my allergies and suggested a few meals for me. I had the Pan Roasted Sea Bass and it was delicious! perfectly cooked fish, perfect potatoes and vegetables - overall an amazing meal! I would definitely order this again. My boyfriend and I also shared the hand cut fries which were amazing!"

  • "Great looking place with a really good vibe. Great food all around. I just wish the chicken & waffles portion was larger. Sooo good I was hungry for more. Only negative is the noise level - a lot of tables close together and open ceilings makes it unnecessarily loud.. Overall, really enjoyed the food and would go back again."

Yummy , sinful bloody mary's, off the charts burger, superb service, terrific music . Vibrant crowd - lively but not noisy - Cozy atmosphere, great light - awesome way to spend a sunday afternoon - can not say enough positive things about this restaurant ."

  • "The men settled on a beer from their decent size collection. The ladies each tried cocktails. I had the Dirty South — made with homemade sweet tea, fire fly vodka, lemon - and I had another later in the meal - fantastic. My friend ordered the Pear Necessity on the suggestion of the waiter, and when she didn't like it they took it back without a second glance. The food was fantastic, from the appetizers (don't miss the fried green tomatoes) and the entrees, to the cornbread and jalapeño jelly placed on all tables. The desserts looked fantastic - they have their own pastry chef - but we were all stuffed. The service was great, the owner came over and chatted. We will go back again and again."

  • "The night we went, they had a problem with the fans in the kitchen - the entire restaurant was full of smoke. It took over an hour to get our appetizers. There was no explanation or apology."

  • "While I had a great time with many of your items, I was somewhat disappointed in the devil eggs being so bland. Your restaurant's food has sooo much flavor and spices of southern cooking.... it was surprising that those eggs.... spice them up!"

  • "My husband and I grew up in the South, so I thought this would be a fun date night. Farm to table Southern food, sounds fantastic. And it was! Absolutely delicious. We had the fried oysters appetizer and a BLT salad to start, The Yardbird and Shrimp and Grits (completely understand why previous reviewers mentioned wanting to lick the plate), then coconut cake and the best red velvet cake ever. The sweet tea was perfectly brewed. Hoping that some southern breweries will be featured soon (Terrapin, maybe?). We will definitely be back. Great service. Warm atmosphere. Liked that we could choose "hot spot bar" or "quieter in the back" seating. Would love to try brunch next!"

  • "I have eaten were twice. There is some variance in the food and in the service but overall its pretty good. At the price could be maybe better that pretty good, but I will give it another try before too long. The grits are quite good and the burger was especiall good. The shrimp were not terribly flavorful."

  • "A friend and I dined on their chicken and waffles. So delicious. Tasty collard greens. The chicken was very moist with a very crispy crust. Peppered honey and maple syrup to accompany the waffles. The fig sangria is perfect for a cold winter night. We will return!"

  • "The brunch was so delicious and the ambience was lively. They really do fit the southern comfort food flair and their drinks are very unique. The chicken and waffles were the best I have ever had! On Sunday they have a live band and drink specials. A must go in my opinion!"

  • "I have been to Mama's Boy on multiple occasions and each experience has been positive. My go to restaurants are the ones that I can count on to deliver good food and good service every visit, Mama's Boy has moved into that category. I also want to give a shout-out to all their delicious dessert cakes--yum!"

  • "What a great find this is! Everything from the service to the desserts was excellent. A great place to take a date or go with friends. The prices were very reasonable. The shrimp and grits was one of the best meals I ever had. I will be back many times."

  • "Really enjoyed a menu that offered out of the ordinary food that was tasty and well prepared. Staff was friendly and helpful. Service outstanding. Only glitch was the restaurant changes more for straight up and drinks on the rocks. I felt that this was less than clear from the menu, and is unusual. When I objected they quickly adjusted my bill. I do highly recommend this dining experience!"

  • "Sunday brunch at Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge was excellent. It's located in SoNo opposite the Maritime Center. Parking is easy and just a few steps away. The place was buzzing with couples, twenty-somethings, families and even a private party for a baby shower. This is a beautiful light-filled space with comfortable décor but the real stars are the food and staff. If lucky, your party of four can sit at what I'll call the "kitchen counter" where you'll get to watch the kitchen and chat with staff. The food absolutely sparkles - wonderful fresh flavors, beautiful preparations. The staff is happy, informed and helpful. Everything about Mama's Boy adds up to a delicious and fun dining experience."
