A word from Magic Flute
One of San Francisco’s most romantic restaurants, the Magic Flute, has a new and exciting menu reflecting California-Italian Cuisine. Located in fashionable Presidio Heights, the restaurant with sponge-painted walls and hardwood floors is reminiscent of a family-run trattoria found in a small Tuscan village. Sunlight streams in through large picture windows in the front dining room, and after dark, Florentine wrought-iron chandeliers, imported from Europe, infuse the room with soft light. The equally beautiful rear dining room looks onto a lovely, flower-filled patio with white Italian marble tables and large Italian market umbrellas that make the heated patio the ideal spot for al fresco dining. Phil LaCavera sees to it that service is personal and attentive. The staff also takes great pride in making each party and wedding a memorable occasion. You won’t find a more enchanting ambiance for your special celebration.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our second time dining at the Magic Flute, and surely will not be our last. The food was good, although the veggie omelet could have used some spicing up. My daughter had the quiche which was fabulous and a generous enough portion for her to take home and have as a second meal, which is always great for a starving college student. The service was friendly and attentive."

  • "As always a perfect treat never fails to make everyday a special dinning experience"

  • "Our group enjoyed our Sunday morning brunch at the Magic Flute. I was worried that it would be a bit stuffy given the décor, but it was not at all. Its a garden type setting that seems like the Ladies Auxillary of some old school Lodge would frequent, but the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was fine. It was pretty simple fare, but well done. The coffee was excellent!"

  • "The restaurant is very outdated and the decor looks very gaudy, the tea cup that I got was dirty, the champagne flute that I got was chipped, and the waffle that I was served was soggy and much worse than something that I could have prepared at my own home. I won't be back. The only positive was that it was quiet."

  • "Although I have been enjoying lunches at the Magic Flute, this was my first dinner there. It was difficult for me to find something on the menu that I wanted to eat, and the steak I finally chose was overcooked--in spite of my request for "rare to medium-rare.""

  • "There is nothing like sitting on the patio at the Magic Flute on a sunny Sunday afternoon enjoying brunch. The patio is beautifully decorated and heat lamps keep you warm when the weather gets cool. We tried the salmon salad and the shrimp Louis and both were great. We also tried the pizza which we liked. We were too full for dessert but the dessert tray had several tempting treats on it."

  • "a party of four seated outdoor which we didnt mind since it was actually nice outside and it was a pretty enclosed area. there was a baby shower so the noise level was a bit energetic and felt a bit too crowded. staff kept tinkering with the outdoor umbrella right behind my friend. it became a bit of a problem when they were serving our orders. the beignets were good. overall the food was good but nothing made us go wow this is really good...id come back for this again or id like to try other stuff on the menu."

  • "Server was very helpful accommodating a vegan in the group by creating a new entree item that wasn't on the menu just for them and by suggesting vegan appetizer options"

  • "This was the first time we had gone to the Magic Flute for lunch and it was wonderful. We sat out on the patio which looks like a garden in Italy or France. Beautiful flowers, garden statues and a fountain. I tried the salad special - blackened wild salmon with blood orange, marinated cucumbers, tomatoes and a lemon vinaigrette. It was outstanding. My husband tried the shrimp louis, which he liked very much. The garlic bread was fabulous. We can't wait to go back."

  • "Totally enjoyed everything about Magic Flute. Loved the outdoor patio. The food was delicious--the beignets were particularly wonderful. Highly recommended."

  • "My family and I had Sunday brunch. While the food was good, I thought it was overpriced. Restaurant is a bit "tired" looking. Needs a facelift. Great location."

  • "The food selections are prepared well, the staff is professional and gracious, and one can hear a conversation across the table. One is almost "transported to Tuscany" while enjoying a good Italian dinner!"

  • "Perfect Restaurant for couples wanting a great meal in an evening. While the front dinning room can be a little noisy, the back area, covered the night we were there because it was raining...was perfect. Dates stuff with Point Reyes blue cheese, excellent starter. The Lamb was cooked just right. Deserts---too many to choose from Shall return."

  • "I found Magic Flute on Yelp when looking for a brunch spot near Kanbar Hall. It was very good. The bloody marys were excellent as were the sandwiches and eggs benedict. Only complaint was the policy that all party members have to be there to be seated. I understand why this rule is in place, but one of our party had a flat tire and the others needed to wait 30 minutes before that person arrived and they could be seated."

  • "Food and service consistently excellent, great ambience, just an all-around good place for couples or small groups. Delightful outdoor heated terrace shielded from wind."

  • "Such a comfortable dinning spot, inside is delightful and the patio is a special little romantic area. The menu is appropriate for all, with a nice wine list. I have been a happy guest there several times, food is always good, and hot or cold accordingly. Wait staff has always been excellent, and willing to let you take you time dinning. That is always a big factor for my return to any restaurant."

  • "We arrived for our reservation of 6 people (5 + 1 baby) and were initially sat at table for 4+1. The host seemed annoyed that we would actually want the right size table but did move us to the right one. The waiter seemed confused with our order and came back to confirm the number of crab benedicts for the table...then proceeded to forget the order entirely which by that time we had to cancel. The food was good but nothing to rave about in my opinion. The backyard is lovely and if the service and seating experience had been better so probably would have been the review."

  • "We were able to make a reservation here with only an hour's notice to restaurant. As we were celebrating two recent weddings, we were looking for a place for brunch that was a notch above our usual weekend hangouts. This place fit the bill admirably. We ordered mainly lunch entrees so can't really speak to egg-related brunch items but our party of four was satisfied with our steak sandwich, burger, pizza, and waffles with strawberries. Patio dining worked out perfectly for us as indoor table spacing was a little cramped. Most impressed that we were able to show up and be seated on a busy Saturday with so little lead time. Recommended."

  • "I wanted to write a longer review but since space is limited, here are the basics: Ambiance: Not as romantic as expected even in the patio. Good but not great. Service: Good overall but needs polishing. This is from experience since I worked in the industry for 20 years. Food: Major disappointment. Crab Cakes were pre-cooked all the way through (came within two minutes or ordering) and tested as such. For the entrees, we had made a request to spice up if possible the Sea Bass that we had ordered. A spicy salsa looking sauce was made but the risotto that came with the dish had no flavor and the dish was disappointing. My beef was missing the sauce on it and I had to ask for it. Desserts did not appear to be homemade."

  • "It was pouring rain and we sat outside in the court yard. Odd, but it was warm, dry and quiet. like a private dinning room. good food, wonderful service and unique atmosphere. we will go back."

  • "noisy! We sat inside in the front room and it was considerably noisy. Could do with a bit of sound baffling or such. Besides that, the room itself was lovely and the service was very friendly and timely. Food was good too with a menu selection to please everyone."

  • "What a disappointment. Food and service good as usual. If the owners have turned the place into a brunch place for misbehaved children at the weekends, they should let diners in the neighborhood know?"

  • "Our dining experience at The Magic Flute could not have been better. The food and service was wonderful. Since it was such a beautiful day in San Francisco, we were able to sit on the back porch. It was perfect."

  • "Love this restaurant!! Always the best, friendliest service, wonderful food, and great ambience. I have been to The Magic Flute several times and highly recommend it! It is in a wonderful location on Sacramento Street (except parking is always a challenge), a cozy neighborhood restaurant. The owner is very personable, at least one of the waiter's has been there a long time and always delivers excellent service. On my most recent visit, I introduced this restaurant to two of my friends who were highly complimentary of their experience there. They greatly enjoyed the blackened salmon, and I loved my shrimp louie. I don't think you can go wrong!"

  • "Loved having Sunday brunch here! Adorable back patio makes for a great ambiance. Food was delicious. I got the Hunter's Scramble and my friend got the Eggs Benedict, and we shared the beignets. Definitely get the beignets! Service was fantastic--our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I can only comment on their brunch service, but it is top notch. The service is attentive and speedy, and the food is original and well executed. The coffee could be improved (relative to some of the superior french press options we have in SF), but otherwise everything here is spot on, and the place has a sweet, homey atmosphere to it."

  • "I took a friend to lunch for her birthday and she wanted to stay in the front of the restaurant, which is a lot noisier than the back or the patio, which I prefer. As usual, the food was excellent, as was the services and ambience. I've also used this restaurant for a dinner for a major international academic meeting and everyone was very happy with the choice - comments were that it was the best choice restaurant that they've ever had."

  • "The staff was very hospitable for our party of 6. Food and drinks came very quickly, which we appreciated with our large party. The outdoor dining space in the back has heating lamps, and the space itself is great for large and small groups alike. We didn't feel like we were right up against any other brunch party and could chit chat in peace."

  • "It was the first time at the Magic Flute. Our daughter recommended the restaurant to us; we had friends from southern California who we always try to find a great place to have dinner; the Magic Flute made our return list. The owner Phillip LaCavera and Elizabeth who waited on us were very friendly and delightful to talk with. The food was the best and Elizabeth very helpful. Defiantly a return visit is in order soon."

  • "As usual we had gracious service when celebrating my birthday with a lunch that included my 92-year old mom. Salads are always delicious and filling and the blackened salmon was perfectly cooked, seasoned well and a generous portion. The sausage sandwich was also a winner. To start we indulged in the wonderful combo of dates stuffed with blue cheese and wrapped in crispy prosciutto. Our coffee and tea were constantly replenished. It's always a relaxed dining experience at the Magic Flute."

  • "Everything great about Magic Flute ....excccccept, potatoe leek soup yesterday was like dishwasher. Brownish in color, thin and no taste....at all. Otherwise, quishe delicious and the marscapone with fresh strawbetteries was wonderful. Building 3 doors down started on fire, so there was lots of great people-viewing, activity and entertainment. This is a darling little cafe that you'll love.....next time we'll send the soup back....."
