Diner Reviews
  • "Last minute decision for dinner took us to Locanda Positano and we were not disappointed. The food was good, the service was excellent and the atmosphere very pleasant. We had been there for lunch and the same can be said for lunch time. "

  • "A favorite spot in San Carlos. Owner Enzo knows and greets his regulars. We often bump into San Carlans we know. Everything we've tried on menu is delicious. Wines are reasonably priced. Servers are friendly. Noise and energy levels are high, but enjoyable. "

  • "Great ambiance! Outdoor seating was a little cramped but still very gorgeous!"

  • "We are regulars at Positano and we keep going back because the food is always delicious and the place is so very friendly. We love the pastas the best. I had the strozzepreti (with mushrooms and sausage). My husband had the bolognese lasagna! So yummy. For dessert, we always get the limoncello ice cream. It's in a champagne flute and is vanilla and lemon frozen deliciousness. We are happy to get wine recommendations and this time, tried a Valpolicella from the Veneto region. It was the perfect compliment to our meals. We sat at the bar after dinner for an after-dinner drink which made the evening perfect!"

  • "Been here several times. I think it's getting better. Moscow Mule was amazing. Our waiter was very patient as we didn't order for the longest time."

  • "Had reservations for party of 4 and still took an hour to be seated. The service was slow and irradic. The food was subpar in taste and quantity. The lobster ravioli barely had a few small pieces in a select few and rest was all dough. The carbonara was cold and bland. There are many other restaurants in town and on the peninsula worth visiting!"

  • "Excellent gluten free options, truly yummy. We tried the appetizer sampler (which they tree made for my gluten free needs, tasty!) a Pizza (they make the dough themselves which is excellent and also used for the sampler) and a pasta dish. While I am the one in need of gluten free, we shared all of the meals - tasty! Can't wait to go back. Know that this place is very busy and the staff is pulled into many directions constantly. It may seem a little frenetic at times but be patient as they come through for you."

  • "Initial greeting was great. We were seated by the window (open air). But it was downhill from there. We could never locate our waiter. He would disappear for long Periods of time. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about. Ceasar salad was bland And tasteless with soggy croutons. The sauce on the Margherita pizza was "slurpy". The one exception Was the meatball appetizer, which were very good"

  • "We really enjoy eating at Locanda Positano - very authentic with authentic recipes. Everything we have had has been delicious. The restaurant has a very lovely, european ambiance. Go and enjoy a nice meal!"

  • "Vibrant crowd at lunch. Wait staff friendly, helpful and efficient. Every meal, from appetizer to dessert, was full of flavorful fresh ingredients! Chianti Classico to die for. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Had dinner there on Sunday and really enjoyed the experience. The burrata cheese, which tasted like it was made 5 minutes before it was set on the table was luscious. They sprinkled greens and ladled more fresh burrata on the pizza, which is made in the beehive, (I assume) wood burning oven visible from the bar made the pizza one of the best I've had in San Carlos. The noise level can be a little daunting on weekend evenings, however. And the owners have a tendency to look you up and down, assessing whether you deserve a table or not as well! Fortunately, we've passed inspection the three times we dined there. They are very Italian."

  • "We have been going there for a while, but we have never had any bad experience. Food is constant and very good. The KAte salad with berries and sweet dressing was very good, we were able to order a nice Tuna tartar appetizer from next door Gusto, all pasta was very good. Enzo is a special person always there and welcoming us."

  • "I have dined here for lunch as well as dinner..The seating is rather close together, but friendly..The food is good but the noise level is awfull...Much to noise for a small place. In good weather the glass windows are opened and it does make a difference as far as the noise level."

  • "First time dining here and won't be the last. Very accomodating, well served and great flavors. Homemade Tiramisu was the bomb"

  • "This dinner fell far short of what I was hoping for for my birthday dinner. The waiter was distracted, never introduced himself, or offered suggestions or warmth. I ordered the halibut special, and it frankly tasted like a hotel buffet. Our meals were clearly sitting under a hot lamp while we at the apps, as my fish was overdone and the pasta dishes my family ordered appeared dry. They seemed to enjoy them though. The kids treatment was good - offering a menu for them, micky mouse shaped pizza and coloring page. But it was so loud we could hardly all chat as a group. They provided a bday dessert with candle and song, which was nice. All in all, the food and service were so unimpressive I would not go back."

  • "I made a reservation, but it didn't guarantee us a table when we arrived so we still had to wait about half an hour for a table to open up. I got the beet salad, which has this cheesy topping that somehow has a spicy kick to it after ingesting it. The lasagna was a perfect square and very tasty and hot when I got it. Our waiter was nice, but seemed a little frazzled covering a lot of tables. Every time we called him to our table, he already came apologizing like we were complaining about the wait when all we wanted to do was order another drink or food to the table. When things calmed down, that's when he told my friend the origin of her spaghetti carbonara. Guess you'll have to find out from here that carbonara does not mean carbs!"

  • "The food is well prepared and atmosphere lively. But there must be a lack of wait staff because our waitress was gone for extended periods of time on both my visits. On my first visit, it took more than 30 mins to get a bottle of wine - we were sitting at our table without drinks or food for 30 mins. On my last visit, our waitress was asked to wait on on other tables right after she spent only 5 mins with us. The manager took over the uncorking of the wine, and rushed to uncork our 2nd bottle of wine. Our entrees arrived way too early - they tried to place our entrees next to our salads while we were still eating our salads! Everything felt so rushed. The service is rough on the edges. You have to be prepared for the service to dine here."

  • "Served with homemade pappardelle pasta, this was an excellent entree. Only problem is I started with a Happy Hour order of meatballs followed by a bowl of Tuscan bean soup with kale. (Both excellent). So by the time the entree arrived I was pretty full. Ate half of the entree and took the rest to go and had it for dinner the following nite. Yum. The boar was not at all gamey and was melt in your mouth tender. My wife had a seafood medley that was also very good and plentiful."

  • "Too noisy, service poor. Will not eat there again."

  • "First time we had a reservation for 2 at 7pm on a Friday night waited an hour to be seated. The pizza was good the pasta a little undercooked or dry for me. Second time again on a Friday night at 6:45 p.m. a party of 4 seated right away this time but again the pasta was too dry like it had been sitting for a while."

  • "This family owned restaurant is great fun. They showed a lot of warmth and hospitality. Food was delicious. Only drawback is the noise level. it was almost too hard to carry on a conversation. Overall, enjoyed it and we will come back. A great addition to downtown San Carlos."

  • "Positano offers great modern Italian fare in a contemporary setting - not a checkered table cloth, spaghetti and meatballs kind of place. Try the Pappardelle with Wild Boar Ragout or the Pizza with Pancetta and Egg. The Squid Ink Pasta with shellfish is also very good! The restaurant is always buzzing. This makes it difficult to get a table on short notice. There is limited outside seating (4-6 tables) and also a bar (8-10 seats). My only complaint is that they are often off-schedule from a reservation perspective, which leads to somewhat harried service."

  • "Food was great - it was very loud & had a hard time having conversations without yelling."

  • "3rd time there as we just kept hoping it would get better. Ordered the fillet if sole for 2 of 3 us - again the sauce is great. Menu stated it was in a bed of spinach but I literally counted 3 leaves. Instead there were cut carrots. Good thing I was no allergic. The other order has plenty of spinach. Server was brand new which is fine, she did her best. But the food does not match the caliber of what the venue presents. Disappointed overall. 3 times is enough to try. Beautiful restaurant though."

  • "We had a booking for a table for 2 at 7:30 on a Saturday night. Unfortunately, when we arrived (on time) we faced a 30 minute wait for our table and a full bar. The Host was very apologetic, but was unable to do much to get us a spot anywhere. He said with the football playoffs on, he had early birds come in and not leave even after 2 or 3 hours. Live & learn. We were not the only ones who faced the same situation that night."

  • ""I love the energetic feel of this place - the staff were attentive on a busy night. The ambiance was warm and welcoming. The specials were appealing. We tried two of them. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The beet salad was amazing and the mushroom pasta was particularly tasty. The risotto really hit the mark. Service was one step ahead of the crowd, alert and professional in a cordial way. Cocktails and wine just right, well balanced. Absolutely worth the visit."

  • "I've been here twice for lunch and just once for dinner. I choose to eat here for lunch because it is quieter than the afterwork crowd noise at the bar. I love the finesse of the chef - what could be ordinary in most restaurants is especially exquisite here. Spices, herbs, flavor mixes, whatever it is, it truly works from the most basic of salads to the finer entree dishes. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a remarkable eating experience each time you visit."

  • "I've eaten here before and had a wonderful experience. However, this time our entrees were not very warm and not particularly tasty. When we told the server they weren't hot enough, she said she got the plates as soon as they were ready, but well, our meals were barely warm. They reheated them, which was fine, but overall I was disappointed. However, I did love the kale salad with the strawberry vinagrette."

  • "The atmosphere was fun and energetic, you knew you were in a fun place. Service at times was a little slow but I chalk it up to the fact that the waiter was knew and it was a busy night. Staff was friendly and attentive. My meal of short ribs was okay, only because I was expecting something a little different. The beet salad was very yummy as was the calamari appetizer."

  • "Enzo and his staff know exactly how to deliver a quality experience to their clientele. I spent New Year's eve enjoying the freshest, most delicous crab fettuccini and closing out my meal with a divine Salted Caramel Gelato. The ambience was perfect for new year's eve too - dim lights, black and gold balloons and a party worthy wait staff. Congratulations Positano!"

  • "Food is outstanding. The Kale Salad is worth the trip as well as the Limoncello dessert. This is casual dining at it's best. On this particular visit, I found the service adequate; our waiter seemed rushed and inexperienced; he'll learn. My husband and I continue returning to this restaurant for the food and the friendly owners, We also have brought friends and recommended this location many times."

  • "Like sitting along the Amalfi Coast, Positano brings authentic Italy to your table--excellent fresh foods, Italian wait staff, and the ambiance of an upscale taverna. Charming and excellent!!"

  • "The food is delicious! Haven't had a bad meal. They let you relax and eat and visit European style, which is nice, but doesn't work if you are on your lunch hour. The service is good, great people own and run it."
