Local 22 Kitchen and Bar -
Best Restaurants in Durham
We had a lovely time at Local 22.
There were 2 couples and we needed a restaurant that fit different diet restrictions. We had a vegan and vegetarian in the group. Local 22 had plenty to choose from for everyone. We sat outside on the patio so the noise was minimal. We all had a great time, service was good."

Have been coming to this
restaurant site for almost a decade. While the concepts (and restaurant names) change every few years, the atmosphere, food quality, and flavors remain excellent and consistent. Menu includes a mix of tapas, flatbreads, sandwiches, entrees, and daily specials. So happy to see the house sausage and BBQ chicken flatbreads remain on the menu. Always pleased to see a Charcuterie on a menu. Tamales, mac n cheese, and hushpuppies "of the day" concept is very cool idea, and we had the tamales, which were good. Just a cool neighborhood scene with outdoor patio dining and a neat indoor atmosphere. Haven't been here late evening, but hear it picks up into a vibrant bar scene."

Fresh tasty local ingredients in
salads, appetizers and best dessert ever. Salads were fresh, tamales were authentic , burger was tasy, but salmon could use less fennel. The bread pudding was absolutely delicious served warm with ice cream. The server was warm and attentive and made us feel right a home ."

I am so picky BUT I liked this
restaurant. Ate outside so don't know noise level inside. Everything the three of us had was delicious. Nicely casual. Hushpuppies unusually good!"

The past few times I've been to
Local 22 the service has been exceedingly slow. It took 45 minutes from when we ordered for our food to show up, and two of the dishes were incorrect. The waitress was snarky and unhelpful with fixing the dishes. We've been going there regularly for about a year and the food has always been great, they just need a little help with their service."

We loved this place even as
"Vita", and we have been 2 or 3 times every month. This week the food was way off. The calamari was excessively smelly, way off. The tamales were dry, and spring rolls were burnt and oily. The new menu dropped pimento cheeses and deviled eggs! Why? The smoked trout spread was still wonderful. Even if you are going to charge $3 for the bread, put it on the menu, because it is still the best in the area."

Patio was nice for a casual
weekday dinner. Interesting menu choices, great beet salad, fresh ingredients. They were out of several things we asked about, which wasn't a problem but would have been nice to know up front. Service was not bad, but lackadaisical. A little more attention to detail would have improved the experience a lot. This was our first visit; would go back and try again."

Went with a friend for lunch on
Saturday and came back Sunday night with more friends for dinner. Delicious, fresh food, every bite of many different small plates was delicious. Fun decor. Very good value. Our new favorite."
Dined on 6/22/2014
We had 4 small plates and a few
drinks and everything was excellent!"
Dined on 6/20/2014
Food was pretty good but service
was not good at all. Went on a Sunday afternoon. Only about 3-4 other tables but had to get up to get a waiter to come over and greet us, bring us waters, etc. Order was incorrect, though they fixed it quickly. Great calm outdoor space though."
Dined on 6/15/2014
Very good local food. It's nice
to find a local place with character and is not a chain restaurant. I've had two busienss dinners there and have had good experiences both times. They only offer a generic wine list with one red, a rose and a white which is disappointing."

The first few times we went to
Local 22, the service was good and the food so-so. Last night the food was excellent but the service was lacking. We waited a long time for our check and had a hard time getting anyone's attention. Our waiter was charming, but not quite on his game--he came near our table at least four times without checking to see if we needed anything. Our other complaint is that the outside seating looks wonderful but the restaurant has chosen to use horrible cheap aluminum chairs--very hard on the back and very uncomfortable. The restaurant next door has much better outdoor chairs and looked much more appealing. To make matters worse, we saw some of those awful chairs inside Local 22 as well."

Great new find! Loved the
restaurant, our server, and the delicious food. Only challenge we had was when we tried to telephone the restaurant to let them know we were running a few minutes late, there was no 411 listing for Local 22 in Durham. That should be fixed so folks can dial in addition to using a website."

This is a great place to dine
either inside or outside. The food is always spectacular as is the service!"

Great hidden spot in Durham. Great
staff and delicious new american food with a southern flare. Love the farm to table aspect of this restaurant!"

Local 22 has revived the space
formerly occupied by Vita into a locally-sourced, inventive gastropub-style menu. Their numerous specials (written on chalkboards) include daily varieties of mac & cheese, hush puppies, tamales, and the usual entree specials/side dish options. The regular menu includes small plates, flatbreads and entrees. Servers were very friendly, if a little visibly new (e.g., had to check on questions like house/well spirit brands). Food was tasty. The space has a lot of potential, especially as a lunch option close to Duke campus. Oddly for a bar with no kids' menu, most of the tables at dinner had young (and sometimes loud/wailing/running) kids, which is probably worth noting in terms of ambiance and your expectations."

So, my friends know that you don't
have to try very hard to talk me into going to a restaurant that has tater tots. Local 22 has more than just great tots though. The daily specials are great and the quality of ingredients on their main menu foods is out of this world. The dessert was great too! I can't say anything bad about this spot. I would definitely recommend it to friends and to anyone who hasn't been. I'll be making a trip back too! "

We went for someones birthday on a
weekday and though it wasn't too crowded the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing! The waitstaff was amazing and were helpful when you had questions. I will definitely be going there again!"
Dined on 6/4/2014
Local 22 is a nice addition to the
Erwin Square selection. A good selection of gourmet sandwiches, expansive drink selection with many house specialties, and don't forget the daily mac'n cheese special. The ambiance of the restaurant is homey with a big bar and outdoor seating. A nice laid back setting to get together with friends."

There were three of us on a Friday
at 6:30; there was not a crowd. Our first time at Local. The hamburger was to be medium, and it was cold and almost red in center, while outside was well done. The meat was taken to kitchen to be improved and it was returned with the same center and a darker and crisper crust. So dry and tasteless. One of us had a whiskey sour that was not tasty. The syrup was sour and thin, and the bourbon well hidden. We asked for a change in/help with mixer and were given a shot of sugar syrup which was not, at that point, blend with the aforementioned lemon juice. The trout was bland so uninteresting and simple as was the pasta. The lamb pizza had some good flavor. So one out of 3 dishes. And overpriced."
Dined on 5/30/2014
Tasty things to eat and good draft
beer and white tablecloths and an excellent staff, so all around, I'd say it's a good place, and we'll be back."
Dined on 5/25/2014
They were out of butter...the
sausage tasted reheated, and the biscuits tasted like they were about 4 days old. I guess that explains why it was only 1/3 full for Mother's Day brunch. Very disappointed - I've had a decent dinner here before, so expected better."
Dined on 5/11/2014
The food was excellent and the
service was top-notch. Highly recommend. "
Dined on 5/18/2014
Our appetizers came and within 5
minutes our entrees arrived. We sent them back. They came back in another 5 minutes and were again refused, and again 5 minutes later. We finally surrendered. The entree (scallop dish) was so salty that the flavors of the scallops were lost in the salt."
Dined on 5/17/2014
Really good entrees and local beer
selection. Not sure this place is kid appropriate but for someone who enjoys food that tastes good and who is willing to try new dishes this is a great place. Very comfortable, casual, and relaxed atmosphere. Service left a bit to be desired. Not horrible but not great. Were the food not as good as it was I'd never go back based on the service. Save yourself disappointment and don't order dessert. We were told a pie was deconstructed and it came out looking, surprisingly, like a regular piece of pie. I had asked the server to describe it and it was not what was described. The chocolate brownie was better appreciated. I'd go back for a second attempt. Entrees were good enough to overcome service deficiency"

Must try the pork pops, they are
delicious and much more than I expected. I also ordered the spinach egg bread which was a rustic grilled bread, sautéed spinach, feta with a fried egg on top, could have used more garlic. Companion's flat bread was good although the flat bread could have been crisper. Our wait person was attentive and informative. Will definitely go back for the pork pops. Did I mention the bbq sauce on them was house made and delicious."

Loved the burlap curtains and
jelly jar candle. It rounded out the local theme. The real "local" was seen in almost every food selection. We tried both the hushpuppies (jalapeno) and mac and cheese (hickory smoked bacon) that were made with local ingredients, as well as the charcuterie board with local cheeses, local sausages and local prosciutto. Yum. Shavon, our server couldn't have been any more engaging, when we wanted her to be and left us alone when we wanted to talk business. I felt it was a risk taking our VP from Chicago here since we hadn't checked it out first, but ended up being a great choice. Happy to recommend."

I spent my junior and senior year
at Dukeexploring the Durham restaurant scene, and Local 22 ranks at the top. Haven't had a poor experience with a single dish, and I always end up ordering more than intended because it's so good!"

I found Local 22 had a lot of
potential to be a great restaurant. Nice location, great decor and service but it missed the mark on the food. I ordered he chicken and waffles and it was NOT bad but I would define it as extremely underwhelming. The chicken had GREAT flavor but it wasn't fresh and it was also a little greasy. It was as if they made it 20 minutes earlier and left it under a hot lamp to keep it warm. I prefer my food and especially my fried food made to order, straight out of the deep fryer. The waffle was nothing special either. Again, it was warm like the chicken but not hot and fresh. I might compare it to something that came out of the freezer section at your local walmart. I don't see myself coming back here again."

Caught this restaurant on a very
busy day, but sat outside on their patio and had a great early dinner. Good service, food was good although not amazing, and although associated with a large business tower, good ambience."
Dined on 5/10/2014
I took my family here, including
one graduate, because I had raved about the burgers and we were all ready to have one. There was a different graduation weekend menu which didn't include burgers. A few of the items we ordered did not have all the ingredients discribed on the menu ie. no beets on the beet salad. For what we got, I thought it was too pricey."

Few restaurants do we go to more
than a couple of times so we can try different places, but this is our 'go-to'. This time we took our daughter and she found her new favorite place. She is more of a 'foodie' than we are and has been to more of the downtown Durham places than we have and she fell in love. She said she wants to come back and try every dish on the menu. Daughter ordered pot pie: texture and flavors were wonderful and 'homey', lovely puff pastry. Local 22 burger/bleu cheese for me cooked to perfection (red in middle!) - you can taste the quality of the meat, not drowning in sauces or other flavors. Husband got lamb burger and thrilled (as always) with how it is cooked rare the way it should be."

I thought the idea of Local 22 was
good but the food missed the mark. The salad dressing on the spinach salad was really gross. The chicken pot pie was watery and the pizza we tried was too salty too eat. "

Went for Easter brunch - all three
friends left very full and very satisfied! Can't wait to go back and try dinner. One thing we did note was that the price didn't always correspond well to how much food you got. For instance the greek yogurt for $6.00 was less yogurt than a cup of greek yogurt from the grocery store (although fantastic), basically done in 2 bites, while the $10 breakfast burrito was as big as your face and could have been eaten by 3. Would return to try other menu items, I think it just depends on what you get. Beautiful ambiance and very cool restaurant idea/theme."

Good burgers and mac and cheese.
Service was attentive and friendly."
Dined on 4/19/2014
The gazpacho tasted metallic, the
sandwich was made with unappetizing bread, and the coffee was served lukewarm. Will not be returning."

Local 22 caught my wife and my eye
at the Bull City Beer and Food experience. Feeling they had the best plate of food at the event we decided to make our way out to their new location and give them a try. The menu is varied and covers all aspects that you could want from fresh seafood, vegetarian, health conscious, and southern comfort food. They have a myriad of choices that spans their menu of small, medium, and large plates that implicates sharing. The decor of the place gives the feel of a farmhouse and feels very comfy and welcoming. The noise level is not unwelcome but if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place for such an affair. I would and will return to Local 22, the chef is superb and the prices are reasonable."

We went in for a romantic dining
experience before seeing a show at DPAC. Had reservations and were seated right away. Unfortunately, the food quality left a lot to be desired. Got the house daily special Mac and Cheese as an appetizer, and it came out with completely runny sauce, and a flavor that tasted straight out of the box. My husband's burger was overcooked and exceptionally greasy, and my salad was very bland. I paid extra to add chicken onto my salad to make it a full entree, and the 3 small cubes of chicken were cold and tasted as if they were from the prepacked grocery section. Pace of the meal was rushed. They had us in and out of there in 30 minutes, so we ended up going to another restaurant to enjoy expresso and dessert."
Dined on 4/5/2014
Tuesday evening was not a
particularly busy evening, yet service seemed to be slower than I have experienced the first three times I've been. Servers seemed rushed and it appeared to be understaffed. I always order the hush puppies and they never disappoint me. This is the second time I've tried one of the burgers and you really need to make sure to order the extras and ask for mustard, mayonnaise, etc, otherwise it is pretty dry."
Dined on 4/1/2014
I brought my family of five adults
to the restaurant. We each ordered different dishes and everyone was happy with their meal. Waffle fries were a big hit. My omelet was perfectly cooked and served with a yummy biscuit. Our server was very attentative and helpful. We will definitely come here again."
