A word from Legal Sea Foods - 7th Street
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.

Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013).

  • "Went with my honey, who does not like to try new restaurants in DC. He wanted to go here, which is fine with me. I always get the Wood Grilled Assortment that way I know the fish is fresh as the fish combination always changes. It did not disappoint, the fish was excellent., For the appetizer I had the fried oysters. He had the Fisherman’s Platter which was fried to perfection. Hostess sat us by the window, our waiter did not hover over us. His service was superb."

  • "Nice place and caters to anyone allergies. Kind of funny that a seafood allergic person would be comfortable at a seafood restaurant haha but they made it work. Also not so bad to bring kids."

  • "This was one of the best meals I've ever had. We enjoyed the GF calamari but the GF fried shrimp dinner entre was the bomb!"

  • "The food was spot on and nice choice of wines but what really stood out was the friendly, smiling and very knowledgable service."

  • "I had their crab cake dish. Cake was good, lots of crab. Shrimp (4) were a bit tough and the scallops a tad undercooked. Chowder was very good and friend liked the 3 fish chefs choice dish, which looked better than my order tasted. Service was good, but atmosphere didn't match the prices.."

  • "The food was as always great , and not very noisy. Would go there again if in Washington DC."

  • "I always avoid chain restaurants with the exception of legal seafood. They always go above and beyond to take care of their guests. Being celiac limits the amount of items on a menu but legal seafood has taken a great amount of care to offer a full course dining experience instead of limiting a diner to 3 or 4 items."

  • "Good, but not as good as the legal sea foods in Boston. Clam chowder v good. Lobster was good and desert was average. Cream corn was superb. Service was fine. Strangely, nothing was given to my child to write with for his children's menu activities. Ambience was casual. Overall, pretty good place to eat for someone who likes seafood."

  • "I hadn't thought of Legal Seafood at first for a 10:30 pm dinner, but OpenTable showed me they were open late, and you can't beat the location for accessibility, right across from the Chinatown metro. The grilled seafood assortment was very copious and reasonably priced. I only regret that Legal no longer serves their fish chowder, which I always preferred over their well-known clam chowder (which is itself very good) My server, June, was taking care of her clients like momma takes care of her kids. A great option before the last metro..."

  • "The food at Legal Seafood is excellent quality and prepared perfectly. I had the crabcake dinner that included grilled shrimp and scallops. The crabcake was delicious with very little filler and the scallops were so tender they melted in your mouth. The shrimp were also very good. If you are looking for good quality seafood, go to Legal Seafood!"

  • "Waitress spoke very little English. She misunderstood when I asked for the recommended wine with my dinner (listed on the menu). When I corrected her she told me I didn't know what I was talking about. ...it's okay, just a misunderstanding. Also, two african-american waiters audibly referred to their white co-worker as a "lazy a** ni**er". Very unacceptable."

  • "No complaints about the food. The table is another matter. Despite having made a reservation through Open Table, we were seated at a table next to a wall on one side and the service corridor on the other side with a stream of wait-staff constantly walking by. It was not a relaxing dinner. The service was polite but perfunctory. Our entrees arrived at our table before we had finished eating our appetizers and had to be placed under a heat lamp until we were ready. It’s as though Legal wanted us to leave as soon as possible. But the most disappointing part of the meal was the relentless foot traffic going by the table."

  • "Passing through DC, saw that they had a Legal location so I had to stop. My wife and daughter both had the Lobster Roll and I had the fired shrimp. Excellent food, everything was very good and worth a stop."

  • "My husband and I had the Faroe Islands salmon. It was done to perfection! We dined the evening of July 4th, however our service and food were excellent. I highly recommend this location."

  • "Busy restaurant so always book via Open Table and you will avoid the lines. The shrimp with lemon butter is my husbands's favorite dish and it never fails to disappoint. A generous portion of large grilled shrimp with 2 sides and a portion of lemon butter is a great meal. The almond encrusted salmon, sautéed in a lemon caper butter sauce, mushroom ravioli and spinach is outstanding and paired with a bottle of chilled rose, hits the spot 100%. Also consider making the blackened raw tuna sashimi appetizer a main meal by adding a salad and a side of white rice. For vegetarians, there is a Vegetarian Box on the menu which is far from boring: it is ample and delicious! Servers are very busy but pay attention to their tables most admirably."

  • "We decided to eat here based on my past experience with Legal in Boston. We had the one table of loud talkers next to us where they might as well have been seated with our family. I ordered the Seafood Casserole, my wife ordered the Salmon, and my kids had the grilled shrimp and crab cakes. All of the meals were underwhelming and very bland. The portion sizes were fit for my 12 year old twins, not adults. The prices were a bit much considering the food itself and the portion sizes. We spent $130 for the 4 of us (with only 2 beers) and I can think of many other restaurants where that would have been a much better experience. If you're going here thinking it will be like a past experience from another Legal, save your money."

  • "Arrived very late after attending the Nationals Ball Game but the hostess was expecting us from the comments on the Open Table reservation and seated us immediately. Our server, Jessica, was the best! She just couldn't do enough to make sure our dining experience was the best despite the lateness of our reservation. Salads were excellent, as was the rich chowder filled with clams. Shrimps with lemon butter sauce was also great. The wine selection is very good and we always find something pleasing to the taste buds! This is why we keep returning to Legal."

  • "The food was very good and the service from the wait staff was excellent. I enjoy the crab cakes at this restaurant. They are always delicious. The decor is very nice and the noise level was just right. I appreciate the private clean restrooms too."

  • "Visiting D.C. for the weekend and wanted something close to hotel and a little special...this fit the bill. Good crabcakes and key lime pie; great drinks (mojito). My daughter had the chicken and practically licked the plate. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry and the waitress was apologetic, so it must have been a kitchen issue. They were crowded."

  • "We are regular patrons of Legal Sea Foods and are generally pretty happy. But on 6/25, we arrived for our usual 6:30 pre-theater reservation. When we arrived, the hostess said we had already arrived and checked in (?). When we told her that we hadn't, she told us to wait. 10 minutes in, I asked if there was a problem and was told that, "We have lots of 6:30 reservations and you must wait your turn." (Raising the question, what's the point of making a reservation?) 30 minutes later, we were seated. This left us with very little time to eat and. Our waitress was wonderful; tried to speed us along. But the staff (or FOUR) standing at the Maitre d's desk were totally unhelpful. Very bad start to what is usually a satisfying experience."

  • "My companion had the Louisiana Catfish Matrimony and said it was delicious. I had the Baked Stuffed Shrimp Casserole and it was awful -- 4 very large butterflied shrimp covered in a slightly soggy Ritz cracker crumb...something. I could not find any evidence of crab. At $26.95 this is $6.73 per shrimp. This dish was an utter dissapointment. I would have appreciated it if the wait person had steered me away but that didn't happen."

  • "Discovering that Legal Sea Food has a well rounded gluten free menu was great. For the first time in 8 years, we found gluten free fish and chips!! Good quality food and service. A nice, dedicated, gluten free menu that has real choices."

  • "Highly reccomend the Bang Bang Shrimp as an appetizer both for cost and quantity. Love any of their Sangria drinks well worth a try and their wood grilled scallops (Medium well) were perfect. Service was excellent just the right amount of checking we had made a reservation and were seated promptly."

  • "This was for Father's Day dinner and the service was oustanding. Walked in and greeted immediately. Seated within the first minute of our arrival. Waitress arrived within two minutes and brought our drinks within five minutes. Food delivered within 15 minutes and was outstanding. Definitely would recommend."

  • "We were pleased to find Legal Seafood near the National Art Gallery/Portrait Gallery. The food was great, it was quieter than most restaurants we had visited in DC, and it was within walking distance of the National Mall. This location was definitely in line with other Legal Seafood restaurants we have visited in other cities."

  • "Excellent quality of the food and very friendly and competent service personnel. We noticed that in the late afternoon, there are a number of families with children coming to this restaurant. So we will certainly come back, probably with family and visitors."

  • "Great food, polite staff. Mid afternoon lunch was the perfect time to go. Not over crowded, which can happen because the space isn't huge. We had ample space. The food is always pretty good also. The fried oysters were awesome."

  • "The ambiance was nice and the service was attentive. We had their calamari trio, which was very good. We had a nice Spanish white - an Albariño. I ordered the Faroe Island salmon grilled and I have to say that I found it to be tasteless - the spices were nice and the veggies were nice, but the fish was a little disappointing. The same for my wife's red fish in fact - not very tasty flesh."

  • "Legal is a good place to grab some seafood in the city. I'm sure there are more upscale establishments but if you are looking for some basic good seafood, I wouldn't hesitate to go to Legal. Good for kids and adults out with friends. There is something on the menu for everyone. Service was excellent."
