A word from Legal Sea Foods - 7th Street
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.

Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013).

Diner Reviews
  • "One of our favrorite restaurants. The food is well prepared and served promptly so that it is hot. The service is very good and servers are pleasant. Overall a great place to eat."

  • "It was my birthday and I wanted to splurge so I ordered the 2.5 lb. lobster and asked them to take it out of the shell. It arrived with a large head on the plate that looked to be quite large and a nice dish of lobster meat. I thought the tails seemed a bit small and after 2 pieces I found 10 claws below. I showed the waiter and he immediately brought the manager over. The manager apologized and said he would bring me a new lobster. He returned with the same plate and explained that the chef was trying to give me extra meat, but he understood and offered to reduce the price to the 1.75 price. I accepted and ate the remaining claw meat. I love lobster and the tail meat is my preference. If the didn't have the 2.5 lb they should have told me"

  • "Having eaten at many Legal Seafood places in Boston over the years, and this one several years ago, I was disappointed. The service was OK but the food quality was, at best, average. Maybe an off night, but not up to Legal's standards. At this price point I think DC has more to offer."

  • "I was hankering for some seafood and was going to a show at Verizon Center so chose Legal Seafood. Wrong. The only thing that was worth the $60+ was the wine. No bread served with the meal although others were getting bread. Had the seafood casserole. Tough lobster, smothered in garlic so you couldn't taste anything else. The broccoli with cheese sauce was so tough I couldn't cut it with a knife (I understand veggies al dente but this would have been better served with dip as raw). The chocolate mousse parfait was grainy and bitter. Ordered a second glass of wine (figured they couldn't mess that up) and had to wait as my order "was delivered to the wrong table." All in all an awful experience. Won't go there again."

  • "Dined here with out-of-town family. The Montauk calamari trio was fried to perfection w/ wonderful contrast of flavors. Accommodated us w/ both steamed and fried Shrimp Wontons, which were inhaled. Warm Spinach and Feta dip was creamy, delicious w/ plenty of soft pita; it's a large appetizer. The MD cream of crab soup was velvety, but the menu called it a bowl and we received a cup. The Wood grilled assortment is for a true fish lover w/ sizeable portions. The Seafood Casserole they cheerfully accepted as a return - seems someone spilled salt into it. Our waiter - engaging, knowledgeable, and absolutely perfect service until it came time for coffee. Brought with dessert, an issue for those not having dessert. Overall, a lovely evening."

  • "My daughter and one of my best gf's since middle school treated me to dinner at Legal Sea Foods in DC for my 50th birthday and I thoroughly enjoyed it! From Phan, our waitress, to the perfectly grilled asparagus and roasted shrooms, the entire experience was a blast. Although we had a reservation, for some reason I just knew it was going to be a very long wait but it wasn't! We got seated right away and Phan, who was just a delightful delight with her witty sense of humor, came over to take care of our drink and menu orders right away AND she kept checking on us until the end. I would recommend Legal to all"

  • "Not worth it; the food was average at best; would never return"

  • "Portions were plentiful but salmon burger and spicy fish & chips lacked any real flavor. I had tried a shrimp gazpacho sample at the Penn Quarter Farmers Market a few days prior and it was delicious however the soup offered with the lunch special did not include shrimp, thus disappointed there as well. Our waitress was pleasant but slow to come to table for refills and restaurant was not busy. Overall disappointed after enjoying the sample at the Market and hearing such good reviews from friends."

  • "I took my husband for the first time for dinner. The service was outstanding and the food phenomenal! Easily accessible to the Gallery Place metro, this restaurant will definitely be visted again by us - recommended to all!"

  • "Legal seafoods is always my first choice for seafood in Washington, D.C. Love the dinner rolls, clam chowder, and fried entrees. For dessert I always gave coffee ice cream. The hostesses are excellent. They seem to recognize me even though I come through once or twice a year. The wait staff is in serious decline. I ate at legal seafoods 8/6, 8/10, and 8/12. The server on 8/6 was slow. She appeared not to understand English. Messed up order, and was not friendly. 8/10 server was fine. 8/12, the server did not care. He was slow, not attentive, and poorly trained. He messed up order. His attitude was flippant when corrected. Legal seafoods used to have great, responsive servers. This was part of the joy of eating there."

  • "I've been to Legal many times since the original one in Inman Square. The quality has deteriorated in recent years. This last time, the food was fair but lukewarm for all my party. I like the place but they do need to improve the quality of the food."

  • "We met friends with kids here for dinner. The service was good and the waiter adjusted the meals based on kids preferences (broccoli instead of zucchini)."

  • "Another good dinner. Service was uneven this time. New side dishes since last visit and they were good - especially the kale."

  • "Usually I have a good experience here but this last time my son and I received very small portions and service was slow. The thing that really made me angry was when I ordered a second drink and didn't receive it. After waiting 10 to 15 minutes for the waitress to return she kept making excuses and tried to tell me I never ordered a 2nd drink. Normally I would shrug it off but the blatant lying and the way she was saying it makes me not want to go there again and I have been a regular customer there. Even with the bad service and being called a liar I still gave her a 20% tip. Also the calamari portion was half as much as I usually get. I ordered 4 servings so you would think they wouldn't skimp on the portion size."

  • "We requested a quiet location and were given the best they had at that time. We didn't have to shout. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. I especially enjoyed the classic Boston Scrod. Key lime pie was one of the best I've had anywhere."

  • "The service was good and the food arrived quickly. The taste is not bad, however I think a little over priced for the quantity of food served with a meal."

  • "Everyone knows that Legal Service delivers exactly what it promises: very fresh seafood, expertly though not particularly imaginatively prepared, and good service. That is what we got at our recent visit. Our waitress, however, although trying her best, seemed undertrained. It took a while for her to arrive at our table. When she did, she was pleasant although rushed. We asked her to describe the items on the seafood platter appetizer. She didn't know and had to return to the kitchen to find out. A waitperson should be able to complely describe every item on the menu. Mangement's fault if she can't. She forgot to bring my husband's drink. Returning, she said, "I apologize; totally my fault." Well yes, it was. We would return."

  • "Our food was incredible, my wife has Celiac Disease and this is a safe place for food allergies. Server ignored us, 4 of us -we had to go ask for refills 3 times. After our table was cleared, we were left again never asked if we wanted desert and, no drinks. We had to grab a manager and ask for someone to bring out bill so we could leave. Not sure if we would go to this location again (DC)."

  • "I attended my graduation ceremony at the Verizon center on July 26. I made reservation for this location at 4:30 PM for a party of 12. The ceremony let out a little early and we arrived around 3:30pm. The place wasn't packed but the said they wouldn't seat us until 4:15 at the earliest. When I went back at 4:15, I was informed that they were working on it. Meanwhile there are several open seats. When we finally were seated, The service was very nice but extremely slow. The food was great. I had the Louisiana Catfish with Jasmine rice, 5 Stars!!! Everyone's meal looked Delicious."

  • "Went with my honey, who does not like to try new restaurants in DC. He wanted to go here, which is fine with me. I always get the Wood Grilled Assortment that way I know the fish is fresh as the fish combination always changes. It did not disappoint, the fish was excellent., For the appetizer I had the fried oysters. He had the Fisherman’s Platter which was fried to perfection. Hostess sat us by the window, our waiter did not hover over us. His service was superb."

  • "Nice place and caters to anyone allergies. Kind of funny that a seafood allergic person would be comfortable at a seafood restaurant haha but they made it work. Also not so bad to bring kids."

  • "This was one of the best meals I've ever had. We enjoyed the GF calamari but the GF fried shrimp dinner entre was the bomb!"

  • "The food was spot on and nice choice of wines but what really stood out was the friendly, smiling and very knowledgable service."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "I had their crab cake dish. Cake was good, lots of crab. Shrimp (4) were a bit tough and the scallops a tad undercooked. Chowder was very good and friend liked the 3 fish chefs choice dish, which looked better than my order tasted. Service was good, but atmosphere didn't match the prices.."

  • "The food was as always great , and not very noisy. Would go there again if in Washington DC."
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "I always avoid chain restaurants with the exception of legal seafood. They always go above and beyond to take care of their guests. Being celiac limits the amount of items on a menu but legal seafood has taken a great amount of care to offer a full course dining experience instead of limiting a diner to 3 or 4 items."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Good, but not as good as the legal sea foods in Boston. Clam chowder v good. Lobster was good and desert was average. Cream corn was superb. Service was fine. Strangely, nothing was given to my child to write with for his children's menu activities. Ambience was casual. Overall, pretty good place to eat for someone who likes seafood."

  • "I hadn't thought of Legal Seafood at first for a 10:30 pm dinner, but OpenTable showed me they were open late, and you can't beat the location for accessibility, right across from the Chinatown metro. The grilled seafood assortment was very copious and reasonably priced. I only regret that Legal no longer serves their fish chowder, which I always preferred over their well-known clam chowder (which is itself very good) My server, June, was taking care of her clients like momma takes care of her kids. A great option before the last metro..."

  • "The food at Legal Seafood is excellent quality and prepared perfectly. I had the crabcake dinner that included grilled shrimp and scallops. The crabcake was delicious with very little filler and the scallops were so tender they melted in your mouth. The shrimp were also very good. If you are looking for good quality seafood, go to Legal Seafood!"

  • "Waitress spoke very little English. She misunderstood when I asked for the recommended wine with my dinner (listed on the menu). When I corrected her she told me I didn't know what I was talking about. ...it's okay, just a misunderstanding. Also, two african-american waiters audibly referred to their white co-worker as a "lazy a** ni**er". Very unacceptable."

  • "No complaints about the food. The table is another matter. Despite having made a reservation through Open Table, we were seated at a table next to a wall on one side and the service corridor on the other side with a stream of wait-staff constantly walking by. It was not a relaxing dinner. The service was polite but perfunctory. Our entrees arrived at our table before we had finished eating our appetizers and had to be placed under a heat lamp until we were ready. It’s as though Legal wanted us to leave as soon as possible. But the most disappointing part of the meal was the relentless foot traffic going by the table."

  • "Passing through DC, saw that they had a Legal location so I had to stop. My wife and daughter both had the Lobster Roll and I had the fired shrimp. Excellent food, everything was very good and worth a stop."
