Diner Reviews
  • "A spectrum of exquisite subtle flavors in both the Ceviche Nikei and Tuna Tiradito: the scallops were fantastic and what an eye-catching colorful design, and the loma saltado was excellent. Haven't tasted vanilla ice cream this good since my grandmother made it by hand.... Other things to note: Beautifully designed restaurant with great views. Kind, happy staff who made us feel welcome. Thank you for this wonderful birthday experience!"

  • "Great food, adequate service and a terrific atmosphere..."

  • "Food was pretty good (not great) but service was spotty. We had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time to get a table. Hostess was very kind but we were seated at a wobbly table and it took another 30 minutes before someone came to take our order. The wine recommendation we received wasn't that great either. For the price, I wouldn't go back."

  • "The cechiche is a gem, their long suit. The server was marginally engaged, leaving some of us less attended than was necessary. However, the desserts were simply weak and disappointing."

  • "This is one of my favorite places to dine in San Francisco. The fish is fresh, the service is great, the ambiance is beyond energetic. I've never had a bad dish or experience here!!!"

  • "server forgot our appetizer, and brought the food an hour later. His explanation of my dish was wrong, and exactly what i told him i didnt want. This is the second time i've been disappointed. wont go back, and they wont care"

  • "I had not had a good cebiche since I was in Bolivia (which believes it is still a nation with a coastline) some 10 years ago. LaMar was excellent - the service was very attentive with helpful recommendations, the cebiche clasico was very good, and the Pisco Sour was a great way to start... Would DEFINITELY go again..."

  • "We arranged to eat here because one of our customers is Peruvian. The menu was a good size to choose from, and everyone enjoyed their meal. The only drawback was that I wanted to make a reservation for 10, however over 9 people and they like you to commit to a set menu. That may have been okay, except that we didn't know the cuisine very well, so we wouldn't have known what to pick for our Peruvian guest!"

  • "We started with Happy Hour in the bar enjoying the energetic environment and then moved to the restaurant where the food was great and service was excellent. I plan on going back again soon."

  • "Great food. Seafood was fresh. Ceviche was outstanding"

  • "Arrogant, insincere server marred the attentive supporting cast experience. Over-priced lunch menu for lack-lustered, small-portioned dishes."

  • "This place offers amazing cerviche and other Peuvian dishes. The preparation of the food is great and the flavours are really spot on. The only backside to this is the pace of the service. The place is huge and the waiters seam to be in a bit of a rush, furthermore do the dishes come far too quickly after each other."

  • "At least I didn't know I loved the type of Peruvian food that La Mar serves. Absolutely delicious!! The causa's and ceviche are great and done perfectly. My husband had the pork belly sandwich. It was huge and he loved every bite. I tried both the beef and chicken stew empadas -- the crust was flaky and flavorful, just like grandma used to make !!! The wine list was nice but I was disappointed that the pomegranate/brandy cocktail I had there before had been discontinued. We will go back again."

  • "2nd time to visit this little gem, highly recommend. The food is amazing and the atmosphere fun! My husband and I always get several cold and hot appetizers to share and skip the entree... much more fun to taste 4 -5 different plates!"

  • "La Mar is always a great dining experience. Best ceviche in town."

  • "I was not impressed at all with this restaurant. The food was bland with little taste. I would expect exceptional food for the prices this place is charging. The only thing nice about this restaurant is it's ambiance"

  • "Overall great experience. The food was delicious, the space is beautiful; however the service was incredibly slow."

  • "Everything was excellent. The Causa Limenia was my favorite. But let's not forget the plantain and potato chips; outstanding nibbles (you definitely can't have just one)."

  • "I wish there wasn't a charachter limit so i could go into more detail! The place is super cool. Great vibe. Staff was very attentive and friendly and the manager stopped by to ask how our meal was. I thought the food was excellent and the more typically-peruvian dishes were very unique and delicious. The tuna ceviche was super fresh, the causas with octopus was suggested by the waiter and truly one of the best dishes i have had in years as far as uniqueness and quality of ingredients. Our waiter Nick was fantastic! The main dish was good but i think the ceviche and causas stole the show. It's in a great location and the prices reflect that but well worth it."

  • "Very social atmosphere without being stuffy, the home made chips are a killer, the staff was quick and prompt, our waiter (Nick) was completely entertaining (and cute too) The food was spot on as usual and overall a great place for a night out with friends."

  • "we were there during a calm, weekday lunch so are not sure about the noise level at night. the room is beautifully light filled, the staff was kind and charming. it was an extremely delicious. i have checked Kid-friendly even though it is a very adult place and to have it filled with little kids would not be pleasant. however next to us was a couple with tiny twin girls and a 3yr old brother. the children were very quiet and the staff seemed to be very helpful and welcoming."

  • "This restaurant has nothing going for it other than it's location and past reputation. Keep your money in your pocket book and go somewhere else. Food was way ove- cooked and way too salty. I think they went to Napa to get the wine. We both had soar throats from shouting to be heard by the time we were walking out. This was my second visit. And definitely worse the 2nd time round. First time it was eaqually slow getting the wine but at least our sever was respectful. food was also too sa,lty on the first visit."

  • "In town on business for one night and heard this place was good. My colleague and I had a great time, everything was great, had a great vibe, but the service was the worst I've had in a long time. I'd still recommend it; judging from the service I saw other tables receiving, I think it was just our waiter who might have been in over his head. I'd still go back (if I could sit in another waiter's station)."

  • "I was a little apprehensive after reading some negative Yelps regarding service, but we (my sisters and my aunt and I) had a delightful lunch, with friendly and attentive service two days ago. We got just the table we wanted, lovely starters, incl. the empanada sampler. Some portions were on the small side, but very tasty. Overall, very good food and great setting and service!"

  • "This was recommended to me by a friend so i was eager to try it out. The food was a disappointment though. The quantity was too small and i wasn't wowed by the taste. I sampled the dishes my friends ordered too and i wasn't impressed with theirs either."

  • "I spent two weeks in Peru and am always looking for reminders of how wonderful the food and people were there! La Mar is such a beautiful restaurant. The first two times I went (2 years ago), I was so impressed. The last several times, not so much. The portions are not worth the price (ex: lomo saltado = 4 pieces of meat in the entire dish) and the quality (beef empanadas with two bites of meat, one was straight gristle) has gone downhill. The service is really bad. As the daughter of a chef who owned his own restaurant, I know when the food arrives to your table LUKEWARM or COLD, it's the server, not the kitchen. I was there this week and we mentioned the empanada issue to the server. His response? "Sorry." That was it."

  • "Extensive menu of interesting Peruvian dishes and drinks. Many small plates and main dishes featuring primarily fresh fish and seafood. Cebiche sampler was excellent and reasonably priced for two people. The flavors were subtle and refreshing. The pisco sour, the national drink of Peru, should not be missed. The salmon fusion was delicately flavored with coconut milk and the combination seafood dishes were both tasty and filling. We would gladly return many times to sample additional menu items."

  • "Three of us had lunch today at La Mar. What a fabulous location! We chose to dine outside! As an outside venue, it was still noisy due to nearby maintenance work/construction. The noise inside seemed significant, too - probably due to high ceilings. Our waiter was pleasant, knowledgeable, yet somewhat robotic. My husband ordered a mixed set of skewered meat, chicken & fish. My friend ordered a fabulous, hearty sandwich, and I ordered a mixed trio of empanadas. All served with great sauces, & well presented. The restaurant is immaculate. With our meal, we were offered chips. I liked this place. I would happily go there again!"

  • "Such a great restaurant! Excellent service! Everything we ordered was delicious but our favorites were definitely all the ceviches. We really enjoyed dining here and look forward to visiting them again when we're in town next!"

  • "You can't go wrong with a restaurant where the waitstaff knows it's stuff and is happy to share their knowledge in a friendly & informative way. We got a great description of the plates on the menu and how it was prepared and the different ingredients used. It was a fusion of flavors from South America where I have traveled and lived quite extensively. The Lomo Saltado was the best part of the meal...I tried the empanadas, cebiche mixto and anticucho de pollo (skewers) plate. All were really good, but the lomo was marinated just perfectly in it's juices. It had a hint of Asia through the use of ginger ...it enhanced the flavors, not overpower them, which is easy to do. Try something special: the Pisco Sour...authentic and a real knockout."

  • "My (and my friend's) first time here. Great building, with great views and good food -- a little over-priced -- we ordered way too much. Service was very good, but sometimes a service person will tell you when you've over-ordered.. I guess we were thinking tapas-sized portions. Ended up with 3 doggie bags. It was crowded and LOUD!! A lot of "coworker groups" trying to out-talk each other.. Even so, I'd go back, but order less food."

  • "After having made lunch reservations weeks in advance and requesting a bay view table, when we arrived we had to wait for "our table" to be set up and then a second delay because they had a better table. As it turned out we were far from a bay view table, a disappointment for our out-of town visitors."

  • "while the fish in all the ceviches and tiraditos was super fresh, i found most of the dishes underseasoned, rather bland. it feels like they have been dumbed down for a wider palate. there is a lot of good peruvian in the bay area. i was expecting to be wowed, but i was.not. even the causa - while again, really fresh crab, was lacking in flavor. the exception was the anticuchos of beef heart - very flavorful, nice spice, if a bit tough (they could stand more marination). and for me, the place is too loud."

  • "We had never tried Peruvian food and didn't really know what to expect - but this was an amazing surprise! Our party of 4 tried eight different dishes and every one was delicious. We will be back!"
