A word from La Gran Terraza - University of San Diego
La Gran Terraza is a California bistro featuring weekly Farm-to-Table lunch and dinner. The Grand Dining Room and Terrace overlook Tecolote Canyon and Mission Bay. O'Toole's offers tapas, nightly happy hour, a cozy fireplace, local craft beers and an excellent wine list, M-F.

The Grand Dining Room offers a lunch buffet and an a la carte menu. At dinner, we offer a varied menu from tapas to innovative entrees and divine desserts.

Reception starts at 6 p.m. followed by a multi-course, interactive wine-paired dinner.

  • "and we're glad we did. We've been to La Gran Terraza for brunch and have enjoyed O'Toole's, the bar, but had been eager to have dinner here and are glad we finally did. The number of items on the menu is small but varied enough that you have choices, and if you want something a bit more "casual," you can always grab the O'Toole's menu instead! Food was excellent. Portion was perfect, unless you're a football player looking to pack on weight or enjoy Claim Jumper sized meals. One of us actually did order off the O'Toole's menu. Service was great, but it was a quiet night so we would have expected that. Lovely view. Excited to go back again soon to see what they have to offer. Maybe Prime Rib night..."

  • "Just heard about La Gran Terraza and immediately wanted to try it. Wife and I went with another couple. Wonderful evening. Hanger Steak was the best ever. Swordfish was wonderful. Service was first class, and chef,servers and bussers all came to our table and visited. Lets keep this place a seceret."

  • "We have dined 2-3 times in the evening with you and then currently with the St Patrick's Day buffet - and by far the buffet was a better deal and plenty of food!! The evening meals have been a little pricey for the amount of food that was served. Since I am not a big eater, it was okay for me - but my husband who is NOT a big person, still was hungry when he left your restaurant! That is very unusual - we tried it again in the evening a couple of times to check to see if it was just that first time, but it still was not fulfilling so we most likely will NOT come back in the evening or recommend and evening meal to anyone - we like a quieter evening meal. I might add that some "healthier" alternatives would be nice!"

  • "Everything here was so amazing. The service was so great, our waitress was kind and let us chit chat before we ordered, giving us all the time we wanted. She was such a sweetheart and made light conversation with us. What was really amazing was taht for dessert, the didnt have anything chocolate. However, she went out of her way to find these delcious dark chocolate mini cakes that were to die for. It was so nice to have someone make your night special. The food here was also great. The duck and salmon were cooked very well and for their price, I wouldnt mind having them every night of the week. I wish I went to school here so that I could come here all the time. Would reccomend this restaurant to anyone in the area."

  • "Honestly pretty much everything about this restaurant is fantastic. I've been here for the lunch buffet ~15 times and not only has everything been great every time but I have only seen maybe one or two dishes that have been served more than one time. Service is always wonderful. The restaurant itself is beautiful. I've been to one wine dinner here and it was phenomenal. I never thought such a great place would be found on a school campus, but I was obviously wrong."

  • "A great place for students and locals to dine. They use ingredients that are in season and fresh so the menu changes weekly but is always impressive. The service is quick, the view is wonderful (especially on the patio), and the food is always delicious. I like to eat there at lunchtime because they have a menu full of light options or if you are hungrier the buffet always offers a variety too. I highly recommend this restaurant! I love it so much that I eat there at least once a week with my friends."

  • "Cane here with my wife and another couple and had a good experience. We brought our wine for a corkage fee, which is negated by the discount coupon from the gate guard. The food is fresh and seasonal and excellent. The service from our server Jeannie was exceptional. I recommend this place to foodies for an elegant casual dining experience. cheer's!"

Our server Luis had a lot to look after until 6 when more staff appeared. I really can't find fault with anything given the crowd on hand. We will be back on a less crowded evening.   • "Heard about La Gran Terraza at USD for years. Decided to try it when we saw it on the SD Restaurant Week list. It's now a new favorite. Food was excellent. Terrific setting. Staff was good, friendly and efficient. Only criticism was the staff tried to be too efficient; attempting to take away dishes and wine glasses before we were finished. These actions made us feel rushed. (Once they were asked to refrain from doing this, everything was okay.) It's a great new find and we'll be back again. Thanks!"

  • "What a find this restaurant was! Located in the heart of the USD campus, it has beautiful arched windows and a view of the gardens below! Fancy enough for a dinner and theatre night out, or just to pop by for lunch. The Prime Rib Buffet was excellent, with fresh veggies, prime rib and swordfish. As an extra benefit, all the desserts are made fresh in the kitchen every day and include terra miseu, cheesecake, flan, berry tarts, and decadent chocolate cakes. Yummy with a bit of an extravagant flair! Parking is free."

  • "The restaurant is an unexpected find on the campus of USD. The room is beautiful but a little sedate...except for the tables of college students that can get a little loud at times. We went there for restaurant week but as it turns out there is a buffet every Wednesday night for $20 and change, so we took the bargain of the Prime Rib buffet, The food was good, the dessets were wonderful. Overall it was a good experience, our watress was fantastic. Note that they don't have a full liquor license and only serve beer and wine."

  • "I'd really enjoyed this restaurant in the past and thought the our work unit would too. They loved it! We had the buffet and the service was super spectacular, plates removed as emptied but not in an obtrusive way, beverages refilled as they started to get low and regular visits to see if anything was needed. The group was very excited about the crab legs and fully enjoyed the buffet. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian and there were lots of yummy veggie dishes but I would have liked to see a vegetarian main dish. The Christmas decorations were lovely and subtle, the view fabulous and the music was the right level to still have conversations. All in all, a truly special place to dine."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dinner on the 18th. The room was charming; the Christmas decor was perfect; the carolers were very talented and enjoyable. We loved the "aromas" of the season such as the smell from the gingerbread house. We had a great time. Improvement could have been with the waiter who did not point out the buffet and left us waiting for menus. We did figure it out eventually but did not notice the dessert buffet until it was almost empty."

  • "Our server was very attentive and obviously the place was busy with groups doing Christmas lunches, but he really kept and top of things. The food was okay. I had the half soup (I think it was 3 bean soup) and half sandwich (turkey melt). I was told the soup was spicy - clearly false advertising as there was very little seasoning. The sandwich was dry and just warm when it was served."

It is located on the beautiful University of San Diego (USD) campus. Valet parking is provided for lunch only. Free parking is easy in the evenings. Since it is located on campus, the restaurant hours/closures may vary per the university's schedule, so do check the schedule."

  • "We've had some excellent experiences at this restaurant in the past. This time we wanted to introduce friends to this "special" place. What a let down! We'd booked weeks ahead requesting a table as near the windows as possible: we were given one just inside the entrance. We ordered wine. The server returned with a different one saying loudly they were out of our choice but this one was six dollars more and better! Rather embarrassing! The soup on the buffet was barely warm. We discreetly mentioned this to the chef who removed it and replaced it twice with the same soup at the same temperature. The potatoes hadn't been adequately mashed and were full of lumps. In short, the whole experience was really disappointing."

Butter served but no bread until asked for (after appetizers), and on a prix fixe menu with all courses ordered at once, the waiter came back and asked us if we would like anything else, forgetting we had already ordered desserts. Wine was ordered and waiter not able to identify the wines in the blend we requested; and so on! This was our second visit in 3 years and the food was measurably improved, not so the service."

  • "It's clearly among San Diego's finest dining spots, yet is located in the administration building of University of San Diego. What a curious situation! But despite the (typical) campus parking problem. this restaurant provides free (tips ok) valet service. Food is not only excellent, the presentation makes it even more interesting. The menu offers about a dozen choices, and the buffet provides two more. But the buffet changes daily, and the menu is a weekly thing. Desserts range from excellent to spectacular! Service was good, but the restaurant was fully jammed by holiday events, so there were occasional delays. Ambience? Well, From my chair I could see the Pacific, surrounding hillsides, and San Diego's patented Winter Blue Skies."

  • "La Gan Terraza has excellent food, excellent service, and is a wonderful spot for a lunch meeting where you would like to be able to talk with some colleagues and actually get something done over lunch. I've also been there for dinner, and they have an elegant atmosphere, with the same excellent food and service. Since it is situated in a University parking can be a challenge, but the valet parking will take care of that. Be prepared to use the valet parking and enjoy the restaurant."
