A word from La Cantina Italian Chophouse
Patterned after a wine cellar with tucked away booths, this unique restaurant places diners amongst saltwater fish tanks to dine on traditional Italian steak and seafood dishes with a Northern Italian flair. House favorites include pasta staples like the tortellini tre formaggi-a three cheese filled pasta with fresh cherry tomato garlic basil sauce-and the lasagna al forno which combines pasta layers with meat filling, cream sauce and parmesan cheese. House specialities include manicotti with fresh tomato sauce, flown in fresh Dover sole filleted tableside, shrimp casaligna and spaghetti mare Monti. Steaks and chops are hand cut to order and include our famous "Cantina" Rib eye, 16 0unce T-bone and pork chops vesuvio. La Cantina is perfect for power lunches, theatre dining and famous Chicago steaks. The wine bar is the perfect setting for a romantic date or private deal making. With nods from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast La Cantina has the largest wine cellar in the Midwest.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I must say that first and foremost the notable feature of this restaurant is the service. From the host and hostess who greet you at the door to the waitstaff who are consistently checking on you to make sure your glass or bread is never empty. I cannot say enough good things about them. The food was very good. Fresh, quick and popping with flavor and sizable portions. My son had the lasagna, my girlfriend had the Petti di Pollo Piccata (chicken) and I had the Grigliata di Pesce (seafood). I definitely recommend any or all of them! The dessert menu didn't seem to have the same list of exciting items so we elected to visit a froyo place after the show we were attending that night. Overall though, I definitely recommend this place!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner after our matinee at the Bank of America theatre. The 4 of us each ordered something different and each meal was excellent. Our waiter was very friendly and was able to answer our questions. We ordered a tiramisu to share and the waiter was once again correct when he said it was the best in half of the world (he hadn't been to the other half of the world yet!) We will definately have dinner at Italian Village again on another trip to Chicago. Thanks!"

  • "Great dining experience prior to going to the theater. Waitress asked if we were going to a show so that they would make sure we had time to get to the show in time. The lasagna was to die for."

  • "Always good, one of best places in loop for lunch, a classic place"

  • "We picked the restaurant due to its location to a show we were catching and we were glad we did - the food was good - the portions were huge. The staff was friendly and we made it to the show with time to spare!"

  • "Loved everything we ordered! Plus the drinks were expertly made. Even the bread was good! Service excellent. A little noisy, but then, it was a Saturday evening."

  • "The Italian Village's La Cantina Italian Chophouse is a perfect choice for a romantic early dinner after a Saturday matinee with your sweetheart. We started out with the Caprese Salad, the house made Buratta made this special. My wife had the Lasagna, (get it baked with cheese on top as she did), a classic, meaty, mild comfort food that was just a little too large to quite finish. I had the Beef alla Toscanini, three perfect slices of beef tenderloin done just as requested in a smooth Marsala mushroom sauce. We sat next to the fish tanks in an area made for quiet conversation and a nice romantic meal. The menu listed a few red wines we were not familiar with, but the waiter was helpful, and the choice was perfect. A romantic memory made."

  • "Everything about this part of the restaurant and any one of the Italian Village restaurants is great. We have been going for many years and have never been disappointed."

  • "We had 5:45 reservations, so there was no problem being seated. Our server asked if we were going to the theater, which we appreciated even tho we weren't on a "deadline." We had simple meals, chicken parmesan and chicken piccata, and they were tasty and served in a reasonable amount of time. I didn't care for the cooked spinach served as the vegetable with the piccata however. Would have appreciated a variety of veggies. We've dined here a number of times and it is consistently good but not outstanding. All of the wait staff and the management were attentive."

  • "We have been going to the Italian Village for years and have visited all three of the restaurants. La Cantina is always a pleasure! The food is delicious, the service very accommodating and the atmosphere is neither too loud, nor too subdued. It is a wonderful venue for large groups or for an intimate dinner for two. A great place!"

  • "La Cantina is a classic traditional Italian restaurant with charming fun decor. This place is not for foodies and there's nothing wrong with that. It essentially what you expected from an Italian restaurant until the last seven years. It is probably a good place to go with families and kids. I had the baked mostaccioli, I would get it again, but request 1/3 the cheese. There was more cheese than on a pizza. All in all I would recommend it."

  • "The waiter asked me how I enjoyed my lamb, and I was honest: possibly I had not selected the Chef's best dish. He acknowledged that it was a new chef, who was not yet fully comfortable with his dishes. The meat, pulled off the shoulder of lamb was partly soft (after all it had been marinated in brine for 3 days) and partly burned. The potatoes were burned dry, and I had to look at them to see if they were eggplant or potato. In the event I never found the eggplant (apparently melted into the much vaunted sauce) that had crunchy things in it. The montepulciano was of an indifferent year; the prosecco was flat and not cold enough. The salad with balsamic vinegar was - hard to spoil. Single dinner; arrived at 6:50 out at 7:20. Do go elsewhere."

  • "Took my adult daughter here for dinner before a play. By the time our order was taken, it was too late for my daughter to get what she wanted, chicken Vesuvio, as the cook time was 25-30 min. Reservation was for 5:45 and our food order was not taken til 6:20,thus not leaving enough time to eat and be on time for the 7:30 performance. What we did order was very good, tho. Shrimp casalinga for me and fettuccine Alfredo for her. There was a private event going on in a small room adjacent to where we were seated which spilled out of the room a bit and was quite noisy. Overall, meal was good. Probably will not return, tho."

  • "We always enjoy our meal at Italian Village. The whole downtown atmosphere is perfect. Will be back in the summer, and of course in December!"

  • "This is an inside-the-Loop restaurant that is quiet and fun to go to on off-business hours. The bone-in rib-eye was superb, and I haven't eaten a pizza so good in a long time. Our server was friendly, fast, and efficient; all qualities that would make a tight scheduled lunch here just perfect. We enjoy coming after business hours, when the Loop is empty and very beautiful."

  • "Great place for a networking business lunch. Food was good, atmosphere professional- not too loud, not romantic and dark at lunch time. Waiter had lots of personality but not intrusive- attentive but not hovering and did not rush us so that business was able to transpire. Tables were good size to be able to have meals and documents exchanged without spilling or tipping over items."

  • "Had a good time. We went there with a group of 8 before a show and it was a nice surprise. The waiter was very good new his menu and was spot on with recommendations. I had pork chop vesuvio which wasnt even on the menu but waiter said "no problem we can make that 4 u" The calamari was outstanding and wine list very good. We had a group of 8 and 5 of us thought is was very good and the other 3 thought it was ok."

  • "Love the atmosphere of LaCantina. Valentine's special of salmon w/pistachio pesto over lemon orzo was outstanding! Baked clams so-so. Service is something special - attentive but not overly so. Wine list superb, and our server was knowledgeable."

  • "We love Italian food and were not disappointed, but not impressed with our dinner. It was ok. We were there early so lots of families with children that made it quite noisy. We would probably go back but with all the other great Italian places in the city, I'm not sure why. Maybe friends who were feeling nostaglic?"

  • "Was not impressed. Nothing was terrible but also was nothing to brag about. My date ordered the seafood tortellini and the scallops had a funky flavor. I ordered the veal and it simply did not wow me. I'm not one to complain about restaurants and my overall experience was a nice night out but with the countless options in downtown Chicago I will probably not be visiting la cantina Italian chophouse again."

  • "The restaurant is located underground in a quaint wine-cellar-like basement. It is a bit dark and claustrophobic, but there are murals on the walls and fish tanks that brighten up the atmosphere. The waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. They have an extensive wine list. The menu has a good selection of items. I had the shrimp with fettucini and mushrooms, which was very good. My wife had the veal limone, which she described as average. Also, the soup was not as hot as she would have liked. We ate on the early side, so we beat the crowd and the noise level was low."

  • "A great dining experience. An intimate atmosphere with great drinks and great food. Service was great! The server even asked if we were attending a show, so he could serve us in a timely manner. A perfect place for a pre-show dinner. Been here before and can't wait to go back again!"

  • "Overall it was very good! Enjoyed having baked eggplant parmeasan over fried - still crisp & very tasty. It was our waitress's first night & she was very pleasant & knowledgable. But it was very insulting when her hovering manager had us stopped on our way out to ask us if we paid out bill in front of others because he stereotyped us as the "dine & ditch" type people . Our waitress had already picked up our payment folder when we were still at the table - which included a more then 20% tip all in cash. She was very apologetic when we reminded her. However, it was then apparent that this manager made her chase after us instead of taking time to confirm we had paid. He's who should have apologized to us, not her."

  • "Went for New Year's Eve before a concert; Food was excellent, got in and out fast, service was good as well; Perhaps could have have had sides for the cost and larger soups, but the food was great! Ambience in the bad was good, separate from the bar and larger groups."

  • "Of the three restaurants that comprise The Italian Village, La Cantina Chophouse is by far the most disappointing. Although the cellar location provides a unique and promising ambiance, the food and service don't live up to the expectation. On my most recent visit, the service was so incredibly slow, I thought the waitress had forgotten us. The food is OK, but nothing special. My beef medallion was a little dry and lacked flavor, and my dinner companion's risotto was undercooked and had a texture more akin to rice with sauce than the usual creamy consistency. In a city of great restaurants, you'll find better Italian fare elsewhere."

  • "The restaurant was decent, although our server was a bit inattentive. Plus there was some weird guy who's conversation with a teenage girl (his daughter I assume/hope) was overheard everywhere. Of course I can't hold that against the restaurant."

  • "Overall the food was very good. I would say the antipasta salad was overpriced and not much was on it. However, the pasta with the veal ragu sauce was very good as was the baked lasagna. Anytime I am in the theater district Italian Village is a place I consider eating."

  • "First this you notice when walking in the door is the detailed art and architecture. There are 3 very different retaraunts with 3 very diferent feels. The very top floor is a bit small and seating feels like you "In the Way". But the other 2 are just beautiful. The food and wine is simply amazing. Enough Said!. Very properly priced. Staff is extremely friendly and happy."

  • "I was looking for a Romantic Dining experience for our anniversary. I had googled "Best Romantic Restaurants in Chicago" and Vivere was on the list that came up. I booked through Open Table and apparently was given a reservation for the La Cantina. Although the food and service was good.....it was so old looking (and not in the old times rustic feeling" it was old and not nice booths we were sat in. I was so disappointed. There are so many amazing places to eat in Chicago and ones that our "dressed up attire" would have suited so much better. :( Not a romantic spot....just a good Italian food place."

  • "Went here before show at Oriental. A fabulous two hour dining experience. From great wine, bread, Tuscan clam chowder, fresh salads, melt in your mouth steak filet, gooseberry cod to cheesecake and chocolate martinis. Would definitely go back. Great location for dinner before a theatre show."
