A word from La Cantina Italian Chophouse
Patterned after a wine cellar with tucked away booths, this unique restaurant places diners amongst saltwater fish tanks to dine on traditional Italian steak and seafood dishes with a Northern Italian flair. House favorites include pasta staples like the tortellini tre formaggi-a three cheese filled pasta with fresh cherry tomato garlic basil sauce-and the lasagna al forno which combines pasta layers with meat filling, cream sauce and parmesan cheese. House specialities include manicotti with fresh tomato sauce, flown in fresh Dover sole filleted tableside, shrimp casaligna and spaghetti mare Monti. Steaks and chops are hand cut to order and include our famous "Cantina" Rib eye, 16 0unce T-bone and pork chops vesuvio. La Cantina is perfect for power lunches, theatre dining and famous Chicago steaks. The wine bar is the perfect setting for a romantic date or private deal making. With nods from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast La Cantina has the largest wine cellar in the Midwest.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The service and food were excellent. I had the tortellini. All of the ingredients were fresh. Very tasty."

  • "Of the three restaurants, my favorite is La Cantina, downstairs. Food in all is superb, and you can order off the other restaurant's menu if you like."

  • "excellent food, very quiet, easy to carry a private conversation, excellent service, reasonable prices."

  • "Wonderful dining experience. Great place to attend for a birthday celebration, anniversary, or date night. I ate at La Cantina... the bottom level of The Italian Village and it provided a very romantic atmosphere. Service was impecable! Our waitress was very helpful in helping us to choose a bottle of wine that was not too expensive from the giant book of wines! Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "2 of the 3 diners felt there entrees were average. This place needs a update."

  • "Although I wish they'd give this establishment (the entire Italian Village) a thorough cleaning and modernization face-lift, the food and service continue to satisfy me sufficiently that I keep returning--particularly downstairs to La Cantina. The fish and chicken dishes always seem fresh, and the chef seasons the food perfectly!"

  • "This is the first restaurant I have booked through Open Table that hasade me doubt the reviews on the site. Starting from our arrival in the basement level long narrow dark room we should have known to leave when there were no other diners in the restaurant. It became clear why when we had our food, which was truly inedible. The waiter kept trying to get us to order tequila shots and was sort of overbearing bit really the worst was the horrible, overbooked, canned food. Never again. It was so bad we joked that it had to be a front for something else."

  • "Delicious and fast service! It felt very authentic and the servers were so nice!"

  • "From start to finish, it was an excellent experience. The hostess was delightful as was our server. I had looked at the menu online prior to making the reservation and saw that they had lasagna, which is one of my favorites. I started with the beef Carpaccio, which was great, the tomato basil bisque is excellent and the lasagna was superb (the best I have ever had). Their wine list is great and we enjoyed a magnificent bottle of 2000 Barolo."

  • "Excellent decor, great ambience. We sat next to a very loud pair which took away from what was an otherwise very romantic evening. The waiters were a bit too eager with making sure that we had everything we needed. We didn't need to have someone check up on us that often -- it became a bit disruptive. On the other hand I can appreciate that they were being attentive. Had the seafood stew and it was pretty tasty but I will likely try the half-chicken the next time I'm there."

  • "This was a great place to meet a friend for dinner before the theater. The atmosphere was pleasant and the sound level was perfect for conversation. We both enjoyed our selection. I LOVED the grilled seafood dish. We have been to one of the other restaurants in the Italian Village before, and chose this one for the selection, and it did not disappoint. I will return."

  • "The restaurant was pretty much empty, yet they sat us next to the kitchen entrance where they were bringing plates in and out on noisy carts. Chicken was overcooked. Garlic bread was awful. The only plus was our pleasant waitress."

  • "Italian food can be a cliche if the restaurant takes the pasta and sauces for granted. That is not the case here. All aspects of the meal are well thought and executed. My husband had the spaghetti with sausage. The portion was very large but he devoured every bite. I was going to have the veal shank but our server David recommended the lamb shank. It was perfection on a plate. Slow roasted and tender with a touch of pistachios. We had a lovely meal."

  • "Haven't been to the "village" for quite some time. We arrived early Saturday evening for a pre-theatre dinner. The Burrata was good, but it was served cold. Typically the ricotta filing should have been creamier. Ordered Chicken Piccata which was disappointing. The breast meet was not pounded flat as it should be and the sauce was mediocre. There was no unique taste to the dish."

  • "I was worried when we arrived - no one there, looked dated. But the food was delicious. The meat sauce on the lasagna was the best I have had - I wish I was eating it right now and I am not even hungry. And my husband loved his lamb shank, especially thre sauce. His only complaint was the risotto was a bit under done."

  • "I was very disappointed in this place...it seemed dinghy and old. the concierge at the JW recommended and then I read reviews on Open Table so booked resies for client dinner. 5 of us dined and I was embarrassed to take the clients there. There was only 1 other table occupied and they were SO loud that it was very annoying. the food was only fair although our waiter was very good."

  • "great for pre-show dining but the ambiance is a little tired."

  • "We were a bit apprehensive when we were led to "a basement area" for the restaurant. The decor was okay as it was advertised as a "Italian Villa" theme. I had the eggplant Parmesan which was okay and my wife has a seafood pasta which she loved. The pre-dinner salads were delicious. The service was excellent and the wait staff was very friendly. It was strange tho that when we got the bill they have the tip calculated for you at 10, 15 and 20 % if you choose to use their numbers. But the 20% rate was $2 short of what I would have figured. So they were shorting the wait staff? Anyway I left the 20%+ and left satisfied."

  • "We have eaten in La Cantina many times throughout the years and have never had a bad experience. The servers are fun and enthusiastic and the food is always fabulous. We had a party of six and all of us ordered something different and all meals were great. We were off to the theater with plenty of time for a leisurely walk."

  • "The food was good. The ambiance was nice. The service very good. However, the table in back of us and across from us, their voice was so loud it was hard to concentrate on our own conversation because they were so loud."
    Dined on 6/3/2014
  • "All the foods we tried were heavy... Dripping with dressings, brown gravyish broth on the mussels, overlooked pasta with pulled-veal plopped in a bowl. We could not find a light dish on the menu, except for the minestrone soup which was tasteless watery broth with scant vegetables. "

  • "I too my boyfriend for lunch at La Cantina and he loved it. The food was really good. I just wish they would have smaller shrimp to put in the pasta instead of the large shrimps that you only get three or four. Otherwise I joined myself as always. Now he want to check out the other two that are in the same building."

  • "Before we made our reservation we checked the menu on their website. When we got to the restaurant some of the prices were higher than there were on the website. They should update their website if they update their menu."

  • "Client business lunch at La Cantina for a party of five. Was conducted to the very back of the restaurant to a private dining booth, located directly next to the kitchen door. Rattling carts and servers going in and out constantly. Have eaten numerous times with one or two guests at a table or booth and had enjoyed the experience. Would not suggest bringing a party larger than four to La Cantina, perhaps try 'The Village' or 'Vivere' upstairs for five or more guests. Would eat there again but would not bring five people, would look elsewhere."

  • "I recommend this restaurant which is very well held. Service was very efficient and the personnel very polite. The dishes were exquisite and the wine affordable for this good taste... I had a really nice and romantic dinner. Thank you italian village, see you next time in Chicago!"

  • "I must say that first and foremost the notable feature of this restaurant is the service. From the host and hostess who greet you at the door to the waitstaff who are consistently checking on you to make sure your glass or bread is never empty. I cannot say enough good things about them. The food was very good. Fresh, quick and popping with flavor and sizable portions. My son had the lasagna, my girlfriend had the Petti di Pollo Piccata (chicken) and I had the Grigliata di Pesce (seafood). I definitely recommend any or all of them! The dessert menu didn't seem to have the same list of exciting items so we elected to visit a froyo place after the show we were attending that night. Overall though, I definitely recommend this place!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner after our matinee at the Bank of America theatre. The 4 of us each ordered something different and each meal was excellent. Our waiter was very friendly and was able to answer our questions. We ordered a tiramisu to share and the waiter was once again correct when he said it was the best in half of the world (he hadn't been to the other half of the world yet!) We will definately have dinner at Italian Village again on another trip to Chicago. Thanks!"

  • "Great dining experience prior to going to the theater. Waitress asked if we were going to a show so that they would make sure we had time to get to the show in time. The lasagna was to die for."

  • "We picked the restaurant due to its location to a show we were catching and we were glad we did - the food was good - the portions were huge. The staff was friendly and we made it to the show with time to spare!"

  • "The Italian Village's La Cantina Italian Chophouse is a perfect choice for a romantic early dinner after a Saturday matinee with your sweetheart. We started out with the Caprese Salad, the house made Buratta made this special. My wife had the Lasagna, (get it baked with cheese on top as she did), a classic, meaty, mild comfort food that was just a little too large to quite finish. I had the Beef alla Toscanini, three perfect slices of beef tenderloin done just as requested in a smooth Marsala mushroom sauce. We sat next to the fish tanks in an area made for quiet conversation and a nice romantic meal. The menu listed a few red wines we were not familiar with, but the waiter was helpful, and the choice was perfect. A romantic memory made."

  • "We had 5:45 reservations, so there was no problem being seated. Our server asked if we were going to the theater, which we appreciated even tho we weren't on a "deadline." We had simple meals, chicken parmesan and chicken piccata, and they were tasty and served in a reasonable amount of time. I didn't care for the cooked spinach served as the vegetable with the piccata however. Would have appreciated a variety of veggies. We've dined here a number of times and it is consistently good but not outstanding. All of the wait staff and the management were attentive."
