A word from Kyo Bar Japonais
The new Izakaya hones in on refined, Japanese comfort food, an impressive selection of Japanese spirits and great times with good company. While sake, shochu and beer are set to flow generously, Kyo Bar Japonais also aims to place significant emphasis on its menu of classic izakaya edibles and its creative sushi counter.

IZAKAYA A traditional Japanese tavern that literally translates to “stay sake shop.” Izakayas specialize in small plates and an extensive liquor selection. Service is laid back and never rushed. Customers are encouraged to wile the night away between sake, sochu and traditional dishes such as sushi, Kushi Yaki, ramen and several fried specialties.

  • "Went to Kyo to celebrate my and my friend's mutual birthday with some friends. Overall, a great restaurant. The food was really good and wonderfully presented. A little on the expensive side given the portions served, but quite good. We especially enjoyed the cocktails: I had the Hatsune Miku which is amazing if you like lychee. My sister tried the Kyo Passion; a must if you love passion fruit. The slightly dimmed lights, good background music and the lively buzz of the place made a pleasant ambiance to catch up with friends over a good drink and meal."

  • "Kyo n'est certes pas la plus typique des brasseries japonaises et est définitivement marqué par son statut de « resto » d'hôtel, mais l'équilibre entre qualité de la nourriture et originalité des plats en fait un choix très intéressant. Avec un menu divisé entre sushis et plats japonais plus gastro-pub, il est difficile de faire un choix, tant les descriptions et le nombre d'ingrédients des plats mettent l'Eau à la bouche. Super adresse pour le lunch!"

  • "I had the udon noodles from the set menu during the happening. The bowl was about half full but after eating it, it was more than enough. It was very delicious and savoury. It was difficult to choose between the dessert options. I opted for the chocolate mousse, which was thick and heavenly, while my friend had the strawberry mousse, which was light and refreshing. I want to go back to try their bento box. I saw a couple order that and it looked great."

  • "Overall discovering Kyo was a great surprise! Compare to the other Isakayas, The quality of Kyo's food is better. The only negative point would be regarding the service; it was rushed. We weren't even finished our desserts when the bill arrived; we had not asked for it. A few minutes later the waitress came back with the interac machine; again, we hadn't asked for it. I understand that the restaurant has other seating, but there is a professional and polit way to handle the issue. That being said, the food was great. Despite the rush for us to leave, the waitress we had was only doing what she was told to do by the management. Thanks K"

  • "The entrées were better than the main courses... We could see the plates who were ready and left on the counter for sometimes 1 hour (for raw fish, this is unacceptable). The service was good. Ambiance was good. Cocktails were good. I would suggest another japanese restaurant that is cheaper and gives a better experience (Don't remember the name but it's on Parc avenue corner of Sherbrooke)."

  • "Good sushi overall, although I found the rice to be a bit hard. The menu was off do the Happening Gourmand and so it seemed like the makos were being mass produced (as seen by the trays of sushi stacked up at the sushi bar). The beef sashimi was more "cooked " for my liking. I would try Kyo again on a regular night to offer a more fair critique."

  • "Je suis aller dans le cadre du Happening Gourmand et j'ai été déçu. Premièrement, nous sommes allé en couple. Mon copain à reçu ça soupe et j'ai dû faire signe au serveur pour lui dire que je n'avais pas reçu mon entré. Deuxièmement mon repas principal était l'assiette de crevette tempura. La description faisait mention que le plat allait contenir des légumes et à ma grande surprise tous les légumes étaient tempura également. Ce plat conviendrait en entrée à partager mais pas comme plat principal vraiment trop de panure! Mon copain à prit les shushis et ils étaient ordinaires. Je ne retournerais pas à ce restaurant malheureusement."

  • "the ambience was very nice.. with very friendly staff and fast service. we were 4 people and we all had different things, The fried tofu was lacking flavour and texture, but we had the beef sashimi which was to die for!!!!.. I had a rice noodle/crab salad, which was ok.,.. nothing special... as a main dish I had a tempura platter which was very good.. the sushi platter was ok.. normal sushi... the fried pork was amazing though... really good.. as for desert we had the japanese doughnuts and green tea mousse pastry.. they were both really good.. the pastry was very light... abd the doughnuts very flavorful. All in all it was a very nice experience.. liked the decor and the place"

  • "My friends and I are big fans of Japanese food and we decided to try out Kyo. We were very disappointed with the food we got. The starters (beef sashimi and agedashi tofu) were okay, nothing special. The chef's selection of maki was unoriginal and didn't taste fresh. We expected more for a luxury restaurant like Kyo. The Chirashizushi tasted a bit too sweet and the desserts were also disappointing. We didn't like the Yuzu Donuts. The flakie pastry (is that even a Japanese dessert?) was disappointing because we could barely taste the matcha flavor. Overall, it's not a restaurant we would recommend. The meals are overpriced and nothing like Japanese. The service was poor (the ambience was good though)."

  • "Food was ok. I love sushi and Kyo is not on my favorites' list. I wouldn't go back. Ambiance is good (dimmed lights, music, etc). As far as service, I asked for a custom menu and the chef accommodated my needs for an extra fee so that was appreciated. However, in terms of the waiter, the service was quite slow and he was not always around. Our appetizers were brought at different times: I got my soup first and by the time my friend got his salad my soup was cold."

The food wasn't as good as I thought, only the dessert was not bad. Service was average regular service, a lot of much better options in the area.   • "I tried this restaurant since it is part of the happening gourmand restaurant list. The $25 special menu was thoughtfully planned as it is very easy to try almost everything on the menu if dining as a couple or group of three. The relaxed ambiance and courteous wait staff made for a very enjoyable experience. All of our food was quite tasty with the exception of, most surprisingly, the sushi. Unfortunately, the sushi rice was underseasoned and the rolls were not tight - they easily fell apart. This was the only disappointing aspect of the dining experience. Signature cocktails were unique and flavorful."

  • "i was very pleased with the service i received right from the start. i had reserved for 8, but had to make last minute changed to accommodate 10. food wise, the entrées were very good and so were the desserts. Yuzu donuts were packed and the green tea pastry was very smooth. For the main course, i chose the chef's selection of maki. It included 15 pieces and i was expecting something special. I received some california, the kyo special, spicy tuna and spicy salmon. Appart from the kyo special, which had a twist to it, i was not impressed with the other makis. Some kamikazes or dragon eyes would have been a good choice instead of california or of the spicy rolls, which were repetitive."

  • "J'aime beaucoup Kyo. On y trouve l'un des plus grands et meilleur choix de saké à Montréal. Les plats y sont originaux et délicieux. Seuls critiques: le services est inégale (parfois excellent, parfois amateur voir mauvais) et le prix est juste un peu élevé pour l'offre (quantité et qualité), mais bon on est dans le Vieux-Port. Ça ne nous empêche pas d'y retourner avec plaisir, juste moins souvent qu'on l'aimerait."

  • "We decided to try this place because of the special menu during the Happening Gourmand. We got there and were assigned a table right in front of the door. I asked if they can sit us at a different vacant table because it would be cold everytime people leave and open the door. They refused to give us another table saying they have been reserved, which I didn't understand because I also had reserved our table. So they sat us at the bar (that was the only option not to be cold during the entire meal). The hostess was just rude, the waitress was ok, tried to be nice but was trying to hard. It was obvious she wasn't too comfortable wearing the tight red dress with the plunging v-neck. Overall, this place is highly over-rated"

  • "Decided to come for dinner after driving by this restaurant and I'm thrilled that we did! We came early around 5:30pm, food arrived promptly and service was very friendly and attentive. Miso soup hit the spot on this cold night, the pork belly was delicious and the Hamachi arrived with a beautiful presentation. All orders of sushi were fresh and balanced. Kids gave the fried calamari 2 thumbs up - "the best they've had". Will definitely come back on next visit to this city!"

  • "I thought the restaurant had a great vibe, however the music was completely wrong for that type of dining. The music itself was good, but I felt like I was in a club and didn't find it appropriate for a restaurant whatsoever. The service was good overall. I have to say I was disappointed with the food, though. Out of the 6 dishes I had, I only enjoyed three of them. The beef tongue was delicious, as were the Snake roll and the Rainbow roll. Unfortunately I didn't have the yuzu donuts, which I've heard are fantastic. I don't think I would go back for dinner, but Kyo seemed like a great place to have drinks and maybe a dish or two. All in all, it was a very average dinner and doesn't live up to the hype."

  • "I came at the opening and the restaurant was actually pretty good. A couple of months have passed and I must say, I don't know how they did it, but everything has improved (it was all very good already!). The food is even tastier, well presented and a good balance of flavours. The service by Florian was warm, hospitable and attentive. Everything on the menu is great, I was actually very happy to try sushi there and it was so fresh and you could see that they don't cheapen out on quality. I recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a new kind of Japanese restaurant that is certainly becoming a trendsetter in Montreal."

  • "This trendy restaurant has a mixture of food. Our starters, beef sashimi and salmon, were really tastefull. The hot starters we had after that, shrimp tempure and marinated chicken, were rather spyceless. The hot noodles with chicken was hot from heat and taste point of view. The spicy tuna was not spicy at all and think I had better sushi before"
