A word from Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant
Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant, located in the quiet village of Volcano, sits on 5 acres of gardens and gazebos and native forest. This hotel restaurant features a large fireplace, local art, koa tables, and is open nightly. Chef/owner Albert Jeyte blends flavors from his European background with farm, ranch and seafood products from Hawaii, the surrounding Pacific and elsewhere. Volcano Village is at 3700 feet elevation and evenings are often cool and misty. The historic fireplace welcomes guests with it's cheery fire. Home made soups and breads tease the appetite. Albert specializes in unusual game...venison, antelope, rabbit, duck. The biggest sellers are local fish dishes; ahi, ono, mahimahi and the exotic Tristan lobster. A large wine list complements the eclectic menu. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "As guests of the Lodge, the restaurant is an obvious choice to have the full experience. Dinner was an easy paced, very relaxed experience filled with small and pleasant surprises, beginning with the brie cheese appetizer, excellent homemade breads and soups, and moving through unique entrees prepared to perfection, finishing with desserts as unique as everything else. We were "food intoxicated" by the experience, incredible service and attentiveness, and the excellent dining at Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant. A full breakfast was included as a part of the lodging, felt a bit guilty dining again, did it, but who could resist this experience. What a great place, cannot wait to be there again! RES"

  • "Service is friendly and efficient not elegant. All 6 of us thought it was very nice and my friend is booking for her sister next week."

  • "Food was fine, not overly impressive, locale is pleasant. Service staff definitely needs training, not so much the waitress, but the rest starting with the hostess. All more than rushed (except for the waitress), contrary to the impression the restaurant would like to project. Reservation was made, arrived to a mostly empty place, but was seated to the worst corner of the restaurant, with the better view seats claimed 'reserved' but remained empty throughout our meal, menus were shoved into our faces before we even sat down......really lacking in proper service etiquette. This is not my first visit there, if it wasn't for the lack of choice in the area."

  • "Nestled back off the road, this establishment offers a unique experience of aloha and mainland fine dining. Limited to only about 20 tables, this intentional limitation keeps the diners feeling cozy and romantic and special. The service was superb and the food flowed at a nice place. Every plate was deliciously displayed. I tasted the Mushroom caps and zucchini sticks as appetizers, salads were fresh and green, and the prime rib was hearty. I prefer my steak with more seasoning but it was still good as it was. My only slight disappointment was the desserts, the brownie torte was too dry for me and the lilikoi cheesecake was too sweet. But that is just my taste buds. The wine list is incredible and our bar drinks were perfect too!"

  • "We recently had lunch and dinner at Kilauea Lodge. Everything we ordered at both meals was great, so was the service."

  • "We have been dining at Kilauea Lodge for years (when ever we are in Volcano). You could not ask for a more relaxing, Hawaiian dining experience than here. The Ohana spirit is felt by all the staff that serve you (and most have worked here for YEARS). The food is wonderful, and I always look forward to the choices of soup that can be had at dinner with your meal. Whether you are in Volcano for breakfast, lunch or dinner-this should be a definite stop for a meal. And while you are there, check out their gift shop. Their buyer has wonderful taste in merchandise!"

  • "Love the lodge-feel of the dining room, the leaded glass windows are awesome! The owner-chef is German, and some of the menu items reflect this. The soups are very inventive and tasty. The staff are willing to make adjustments to suit your needs and tastes. We have always thoroughly enjoyed dining here and make a point of making our reservations before we leave the mainland."

  • "The food here is imaginative and perfectly prepared. They have a good mix of seafood, poultry, red meat, and some unexpected meats. Love the lilikoi margarita!"

  • "I loved the service, the food - the bread loafs and orange duck are to die for - and the lodge in the forest-vibe. A great place in a great place!"

  • "A wonderful way to wrap up a day after spending it exploring Volcano National Park. Excellent food and service with a very nice, ambiance."

  • "I loved the informal atmosphere and the setting near a National Park! The food was delicious and the service outstanding. Our fish may have been a tiny bit overdone but the mango chutney on it was wonderful. We shared baked Brie that was in coconut that was delicious. Salads were good. We especially appreciated the way our request for sharing an entree was handled. Good all- around. We would return without hesitation!"

  • "Not much available in Volcano, this seems like best bet. . Food was decent. Fish had option for several preparations. Service consistent. It's a small room, colorful and warm. Pleasant enough experience."

  • "A great spot for dinner or lunch. Better than the restaurant at Volcanp House. A bit pricey but totally worth it!"

  • "We stayed two nights at nearby Volcano house having a dinner and breakfast there and and the same meals at Kilauea Lodge. Dining inside the park does provide the caldera glow at night & sunrise on the caldera - both great visual experiences - but the dining is better at Kilauea Lodge in terms of quality, variety (an eclectic blend of local, German & French cuisine) & price. One could easily combine the two experiences by going inside the park to see the sunrise and evening glow while dining here at Kilauea lodge. For our next visit we will stay at Kilauea Lodge and then breakfast is included in the lodging rate!"

  • "Food on the east side of the big island tends to be acceptable at best. This is one of the nicer and cleaner places we visited during our trip. Good decor and fine service. Having heard so many rave reviews, I was expecting some really great food. Instead, the food was just fine. Seemed like a little more sophisticated addition of herbs and spices would have taken the meal to a higher level. But if you're looking for a nice place to visit after a day at volcano nat'l park, this is the spot to rest your weary legs and fill a hungry belly."

  • "The food was good , but what I think makes or breaks a restaurant is the service. The wait help are very attentive. You do not need to ask for a refill of water, they are always there. Good team work cleaning after a table with two toddlers."

  • "We arrived for a late dinner so the ambiance was probably winding down. The menu looked good, lots of good choices but the actual meal was disappointing. I had the ono fish, which was the catch of the day. It was dry, too cooked. The rice on the side had no moisture. My husband and daughter ordered the NY steak to be rare. It was a tough piece of meat, and once again overcooked. My son ordered the seafood spaghetti which was delicious, creamy. I had a great glass of wine, Crostim. Overall the experience was not what we expected. There is a fireplace but it was not lit. The service was very good, all the waitresses were friendly, smiley."

  • "Entrees and salads were great. Our server was very nice. The only turn offs were the $10 split charge for sharing an entree, which was a bit ridiculous since we still spent a lot of money on dinner, and the "cobbler" dessert, which was clearly just canned cherries covered in crushed graham crackers - gross! With such limited options in Volcano, this is probably a place we would visit again (just be sure to skip dessert)."

  • "After spending day at Volcano National Park, this was a lovely break for a nice dinner, chef prepared, German flair, historic camp lodge dining, Koa tables and great fireplace. After dinner went back to see lava glow."

  • "The service was impeccable and prompt, in spite of the busy time of night we arrived. Gracious wait staff. Wish the food was on par with the service. Husband is a big fan of meatballs, and they were tasty, but swimming in white sauce, not enough red cabbage to complement the meat. My dish , sirloin strips wrapped around mushroom, was mushy, very heavy. If you are a fan of german cuisine, go. If expecting something lighter, pass on it."

  • "A wonderful dining experience. Everything was great, from nene placemats to coconut crusted Brie to seafood Mauna Kea to the Shiraz to the pleasant and efficient server to the incredibly rich desserts."

  • "We had heard very good reports about this restaurant. The reviews also followed that same theme of inconsistency. However, our experience is all we can go by. Unfortunately, there are few choices in Volcano so you might be wise to bring a picnic or make your own food somehow."

  • "We brought our mothers with us this trip to the Big Island and our favorite B&B in Volcano . We wanted to give them a great dinning experience before we went to see the Kilauea crater glow that night in the National Park. Once again the Lodge did not disappoint with a great meal. Excellent selection of reasonably priced wine, great menu and specials and of course desert. Both moms said they were not very hungry before dinner, but managed to finish off most of their meal! That tells you it was good! When we are here, we go to the Lodge for a nice meal and dinning experience and are willing to pay a bit more for that. It has never let us down."

  • "Best place to eat on the Big Island. Lots of exotic game dishes, gluten free choices including beer, fabulous deserts. A bit pricey but so worth it to treat yourself. We love this place and go there as often as we can .... never disapponts."

  • "Some of the best food on the Big Island and maybe all of Hawaii. Service was excellent and it has a very nice rustic cabin vibe. Incredible to find this quality of food in such a remote place. Maybe it does not have the view of the Volcano House but the food more than makes up for that."

  • "Spent the night at the lodge, and had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Both were wonderful! Service was friendly and efficient. Went out of their way to prepare box lunches for us, even though we had not pre-ordered, as is their policy."

  • "We loved our whole dining experience from appetizers to desserts! Wear comfortable clothes here as your waist band will require it...we walked away from the table FULL as we did it right. Appetizer, salad for me, soup for my husband and entrees for both of us. We were going to split a dessert, but once we saw the tray, we each ordered one and shared them between us. YUMMY!"

  • "The food is pleasant, but not great, with some excellent items (dessert was great; so was bread loaf). The cozy inn atmosphere is so rare in Hawaii that I would definitely go back."

  • "This is the best bets for a nice meal in Volcano. They do a great job on meats/fish/protein and the unique location and ambience make it noteworthy. Although I ate dinner here, I have also had breakfast here which was delicious. They have many things on the menu you probably couldn't find anywhere else in Hawaii , making for a unique and memorable dining experience. Wonderful waitresses and service."

  • "Limited menu. Ate late, out of fish special, no other fish on menu. In hawaii. Partner enjoyed duck breast. Wood burning fireplace nice but could not add a log as it was late. Shared plate charge. : ( overall good experience. Stayed at lodge so nice to not have to get back in car after long day of driving"

  • "Kilauea Lodge has wonderful food, good service, and a very diverse menu. They always have some game choices, along with fresh fish, steaks, and some children's choices. It is a lodge environment - not much of a view outside, but it does not matter because you will be focusing on conversation with people at your table, or the restaurant decorations, or the food. And they also have a wonderful French toast for breakfast, with comes with the room if you stay at the lodge or one of the wonderful cabins."

  • "If you are looking for outstanding food in a cozy, rustic atmosphere, this is the best place on the Big Island. Reminds me of some of the fine riverside restaraunts along the Deleware in the East Coast, or maybe one of the mountain hideaways in ski-country. I am especially fond of their New York Strip dinner and Wild game dishes. Delicious!"
