A word from Kenichi Pacific
Kenichi Pacific will "wow" you with its highly praised Japanese Pan-Asian cuisine and sushi, and its contemporary ambiance. In a relaxed, elegant setting, Kenichi offers unforgettable original dishes, such as the Duck Confit, a Chinese five-spice cured duck leg served with russett potatoes and wild mushrooms in a delicious balsamic reduction sauce. The Ono Tataki grilled rare, stands out as well, with mashed yams, green beans, japanese mushrooms and a ponzu emulsion. Another "must try" is the Dynamite Shrimp, tempura shrimp baked with smelt aioli and teriyaki sauce.

The presentation and the flavors are equally superb. Of course, only the freshest fish and seafood are used, so the sushi is impeccable. The molten flourless chocolate cake is achieving legendary status, so save room for a delicious finish!

Diner Reviews
  • "We love this restaurant - have been there several times over the course of several years and it's always terrific. Sushi - both traditional and "modern" is great. This time we were a group of 6 and everyone ordered something different - everything was delicious! Desserts (which we hadn't ordered in the past) were excellent!"

  • "We originaly liked this dinner very much. But after the night we thought differently. We had all symptoms of too much MSG. This jeans we Will never go back there again!"

  • "Very expensive. Cannot get a dinner salad with dinner. Entree has no vegatable or starch. No bread with meal. Ordered 32 dollar entree which was supposed to have clam sauce with a couple of clams on side. Instead entree has some type of citric sauce which hostess said she had noticed change made by chef. Dinner for the four of us with drinks over two hundred dollars. Oh by the way the chef special was a fried piece of fish over some diced fried potatoes and suace nothing else on plate."

  • "We're Local and Kenichi's is our favorite Kona restaurant. And, our favorite meal is sharing a filet mignon with an assortment of their delicious appetizers. Also, Kenichi has a fantastic happy, happy-hour with sushi and drinks at reduced prices."

  • "Some dishes were well prepared, aesthetically pleasing to the eye and very tasty. The nigiri sushi was of mediocre quality. Considering the cost of $175. for 2 people, I would have expected better service. The wait staff forgot a dish, brought wrong dishes, and was not attentive in replacing small plates, to the point where I was eating the food right from the serving dish, and replenishing the drinks or water."

  • "We ordered sushi and was very disappointed when it came. The sushi was very small for the price we paid. The waiter said the avocado salad was huge, enough for 2 people, so we ordered it and was disappointed when it came. It was small. Last time we were here, my husband ordered the filet mignon, priced $34.00 and was disappointed because it was sliced thin, spread over the plate nicely but had a couple bites of meat. He's a big boy and hungry. WE almost went to another take out afterwards to buy food because he was still hungry. So this time we ordered the New York. It was decent. Everything here is ala carte. So we paid $14.00 for salad and $29 for the NY steak. I've had better sushi for less price."

  • "Found this great restaurant in the "Big Island Revealed" guidebook, and it more than lived up to its excellent review. Friendly, efficient service, an excellent full bar and an eclectic, creative and delicious Japanese menu all contributed to a wonderful meal. "

  • "This place had great food! We sat outside thinking it would be quieter but they sat us at a table between two noisy tables! That would be my only complaint! Overall a great find. Wish they were located by the water but what can we do about that? I would certainly recommend this place!"

  • "I asked the restaurant to set up a surprise toast when we arrived and they did it perfectly , then great food and service. Recommend it highly"

  • "This is a favorite place for sushi....and we were once again pleased. Requested an outdoor table, attentive service, wonderful sushi!"

  • "We ordered the Japanese country dinner special, which was $10 off the regular price. We were glad we didn't pay full price because this meal was very ordinary and definitely something we wouldn't do again. In fairness, the miso soup was good, but otherwise very mediocre. Our waitress was pleasant, but we asked to have our soup before the meal and she brought our dinner almost immediately after starting the soup. It made us feel a little rushed. The ambiance in the restaurant was nice. Maybe we should have ordered sushi, but we probably won't return."

  • "Amazing dim sum and dynamite shrimp. Lots more things to try so we will go back. Creative bar drinks that weren't too sweet For Kona with many mediocre restaurants this one is a find."

  • "We come to Kona every year and visit Kenichi at least twice during our two weeks. The other night we had the Kenichi special roll, calamari and duck confit. It was so good! Also, the molten chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream is amazing. Last night we went for sashimi; it is so fresh and beautifully presented. The restaurant is in the Keahou shopping complex - but don't let that put you off. The inside is lovely, although we sit outside where they have tables in an enclosed area with twinkling lights, on a wide walkway in the interior of the complex. It's really quite nice. It is kid friendly, AND you can have a lovely adult dinner. There is a kids' menu. My son loves the spaghettini with parm, soy and butter. Friendly service!"

  • "My boyfriend and I had never been to Kenichi Pacific, and we decided to go there for Valentine's Day. We arrived early for our reservation knowing that we might have to wait a bit, however the hostess was happy to seat us. We were blown away by the ambiance! It was very beautiful! Our server was awesome, very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. The timing of our food was excellent. We did not have to wait long between courses. We ordered several appetizers, several sushi rolls and one entree each. The portions were good. I loved the wakame salad, the dressing was perfect! The yuzu-shochu martini was incredible. I ordered the blackened ahi for my entree, and it was the best I have ever tasted! I cannot wait to go back!!"

  • "We left after being seated. Nobody here is friendly and they had canceled their 40 to 50% off early bird special because it was valentine's day. Something about the chef having to work too hard. It was all very surreal so we were happy to just get up and leave."

  • "We enjoyed sitting outside because it was quieter and more relaxed. The special was ehu with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The fish was tasty and had a nice sauce, and the vegetables were cooked well, but the mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience and will return because Kenichi Pacific is a good restaurant in a convenient location."

  • "We made reservations which I think is the way to go! Food was great but a bit pricey. My fiancé and I missed the Happy Hour from 5-6:30pm (I think) and the rolls are half off! We definitely will return for Happy Hour one day!"

  • "Could spend a week eating my way through this menu. Waitress was knowledgeable about sources for everything, which fish was local, which was from Japan. Excellent sushi and rolls. Good wine list. Duck confit dish excellent and unusual for these parts. Restaurant was quite busy yet service was both friendly and efficient. When in Kona..."

  • "From Whitney's attentive, knowledgeable service to the last morsel of duck confit, our dinner was excellent. We started with pupus of crab cakes and tempura veggies paired with a pinot gris. There was plenty to split and the crab cakes (3 in the serving) were some of the best we've ever had...tender crab surrounded by a crispy crunch set atop a delicious ginger saffron aioli. My husband opted for the filet and I ordered the duck confit. His steak was delicious and tender although he felt the balsamic drizzle overpowered the main focus. The duck was excellent, flavorful but not greasy. We were too full for dessert this time but plan to go back to try the bananas foster and some of the rolls described on the menu."

  • "The food was not nearly as good as it should be for the price. Other restaurants on this trip were far better and the price was either the same or less. We will not go back to Kenichi. If you want good Spider Crab Sushi go to Seaside in Hilo, Kenichi is greatly lacking."

  • "We go to Kenichi every time we're in Kona, it is our favorite restaurant in town. The sushi is fresh and creative, the entrees are well put together and delicious and the desserts are decadent. But our favorite are the hot and cold appetizers. We often just order four or five of these to share and make them a meal. They are always tasty and very original - there are some we have never seen on a menu anywhere else. The service is always friendly and attentive and we really enjoy our evenings at Kenichi. We would highly recommend it."

  • "Kenichi is always good for what they serve - particularly sushi. . . But this is now 2014 . . . It's time for "better restaurants" like Kenichi to offer multiple creative selections of Vegan & Vegetarian entrees and appetizers . . . The world is changing and many people are opting for healthy, local and sustainable food choices, our favorite restaurants should stay current with food trends as they become mainstream."

  • "When in Kona (or Austin, Dallas or Aspen), head for the great sushi and seafood of Kenichi. It is truly the very best, with outstanding service to boot!"

  • "I just discovered this place and have been back twice, once for kampachi and once for sushi. We were so glad to find kampachi again. This is a designer yellowtail that is farmed in the waters off Kona and has a wonderful taste. Kenichi served it fried with no breading or anything and it was perfect. The sushi was very nice too. This is a very nice restaurant to add to my list."

  • "We loved the relaxed atmosphere. The wine selections are well matched with the entrees in the menu. We had a nice Pinot Noir that went well with everything we ordered. We started with an Ahi Wasabi appetizer that was excellent. For entrees, I had the Ono Tataki and my wife had the Kenichi Duck Confit - both were outstanding! We definitely plan to go back for dinner anytime we are in Kona, Hawaii."

  • "My wife and I went to Kenichi Pacific for dinner recently while on our honeymoon. We had three different sushi rolls and a few other small plates - all of them were excellent. We went on a quiet weekday night when the restaurant was pretty empty and the service seemed a little slow, but the food more than made up for that. Also, when my wife spilled her half-empty cocktail, our waitress replaced it will a new full one for free."

  • "Sushi rolls are good, especially during happy hour, but rest of food moderately ok. Prices very high, even if you hit the happy hour."

  • "My wife and I have eaten at Kenichi Pacific several times and have never been disappointed. Excellent food and service! The best in Kona! Mike is an excellent server and the food preparation is excellent. The owner really understands customer service. He makes one feel really special and welcomes you to his restaurant."

  • "Kenichi's is a great spot. We had karaage and new style yellowtail sashimi to start. The karaage chicken was light enough to not feel guilty about fried food and was plated with a light salad that was miso and ginger based. The sashimi was soaked in a ponzu sauce and garnished with a spicy pepper. Great idea but too much ponzu. I had the sushi dinner that was plated like a lunch box (teishoku). It was exactly what I was looking for. 10 pieces of delicate sushi and lightly breaded tempura. The misses selected a few rolls and some nigiri zushi. All standard stuff, but very well done. To finish, we had the warm chocolate souffle. Amazingly perfect with a scoop of tahitian vanilla ice cream for balance. What a perfect way to finish!"

  • "This was a return visit to this fine dining restaurant on a busy evening during the coffee festival. Our waitress was overwhelmed by the crowds and so service was not as good as we previously experienced. Food however was excellent as always."

  • "This was my second visit to Kenichi's in less than 6 months. I have been hankerin for sushi for over a month and when a friend from California came to visit I found an opportunity to dine there again. The food was great except the special that our waitress told us about and got us all salivating for was sold out. We ordered another favorite and had a great meal regardless of not getting to try their special of the night I'll just have to go back to see if I can have that special on another night."

  • "Lived in NYC our entire life and finally moved to Oahu two years ago. We totally understand the restaurant scene. What an amazing experience. From the greeting to the good bye check the entire experience brought back NYC top restaurant memories. Subsequently we decided to eat there the following evening. The sauces that accompanied the new style sashimi, Yellow Tail Cilantro Serrano Chili and White Fish Hamachi melted in your mouth with tight crunch. Also Dynamite Shrimp too awesome to describe. The sake list although small was perfectly organized for the menu. Our server helped make the two evenings very special. We have made this restaurant a true DESTINATION restaurant. Worth the 40 minute flight."
