  • "After two initial and very very positive/memorable experiences over the past 6 months, we were excited to recommended it for a birthday dinner with friends (one from S. America). Kinda wish we hadn't... A restaurant can't be stellar each and every night, I suppose, and this time (a Friday) must've been one of those nights. My Grilled Skirt Steak was rather underdone and quite tough (but flavor was good), and the accompanying vegetables were only so-so. The cocktail seemed a bit watered down. My wife's Enchiladas Suizas were doughy, underdone, and just not very interesting. Dessert was nice, though. We will definitely give J&S one more try. Hope this was just an off night and a hiccup!"

  • "Having moved from AZ to NC I have had a hard time finding Mexican food that satisfied my sophisticated palette. Jose and Sons finally gave me the flavor I was craving! We had the Crank Arm Barbacoa which had a flavor so good it lingered on my taste buds and in my mind for days... My husband ordered the Grilled Skirt Steak. It was delicious and juicy, cooked medium rare... We couldn't get enough! We are planning to take the kids back next week for our son's birthday dinner. Absolutely amazing... I think we'll be regulars there from now on!"

  • "We had a terrific time on Saturday evening at Jose & Sons. The chipotle mango margarita was incredibly zesty and fun, especially with the spicy salt. Just as tasty was the spicy grilled pineapple margarita. What nice twists on a classic drink. My wife had the fish tacos that were filled with huge pieces of blackened mahi-mahi; outstanding. I had the enchiladas del mar; the blackened tiger shrimp were a little overdone for my taste but overall it was scrumptious. Our friends had the shrimp & grits and the crank arm barbacoa (beef brisket) and both were excellent. No room for dessert but that menu was quite tempting. We'll definitely be back, and recommend making reservations on Saturday evenings, as we did."

  • "From our waiter to the food, everything was amazing. I had high hopes and expectations, as this restaurant is located near some stiff competition. The ambiance is somewhat laid back, but the food and service are outstanding. They source locally, when possible, which a lot of restaurants do nowadays, but I always prefer to hear that. The drink and beer menu weren't overly expansive but seemed to have the right amount of variety for most tastes."

  • "We went as a group of 5. Was seated right away and greeted by an excellent waitress within a minute. The restaurant is very trendy with an upscale Gastro Mexican menu and eclectic decor. I would highly recommend Jose and Sons to anyone! We had a great time! I had the pimento and bacon tostones. They were an amazing appetizer! YUM! Will definitely be going back!"

  • "I love Mexican haute cuisine -- I've eaten some very fine meals at Topolobampo in Chicago and Jibarra in Raleigh (in their old location on Six Forks when they had a proper chef). Jose & Sons offers some excellent, interesting approaches to Mexican food with a Southern twist...without pretension. The pork belly and masa waffle with Sriracha syrup may be one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth. The collard wrapped tamales are almost as good. The staff are super friendly and the ambiance is warm. I wish them a long lived success as they fill a unique niche and execute it very well."

  • "So sometimes I think the food at Jose and Sons is creative and delicious and sometimes I think it's plain. Not a consistent restaurant unfortunately because I love the idea of elevated food from Mexico. Unfortunately the last couple of times our service has also been slow and had a few annoying mistakes. We were the only folks in the restaurant when we arrived and still, very slow service."

  • "It's a long story, basically, we made reservations, we sat down, no one came to our table besides the water person, we had to ask for a waiter, the waiter was almost non existent, apparently, she was still supposed to be training, but the manager thought it'd be a good idea to give her, her own section on a Saturday night. The manager did end up reducing our bill, but unfortunately, that doesn't always make up for a bad experience. Food was the only positive about this experience."

  • "My overall experience at Jose and Sons was excellent. Four of us dined together and everything we ordered was fantastic. I highly recommend the ceviche, enchiladas del mar, and the lamb. The wait staff was one of the best I've experienced. I don't think our water was ever less than half full. They were also very knowledgeable of the menu and gave great recommendations."

  • "We dined at Jose and Sons courtesy of our daughter for our 33rd wedding anniversary. It was a great experience. Our server was attendant and personable. The food was wonderful, well prepared, and attractively presented. As an extra treat, for our special occasion, we were able to select a dessert. We chose the churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. Warm and delicious, they were presented on a plate with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate. A perfect ending to a pleasant experience!"

  • "Tried this place on a recommendation from a friend who steered us away from the high prices and mediocre BBQ of "The Pit" and towards the "place right next door". Was very impressed by the service, food menu, and ambiance. Cool, sheek place with an upscale feel but very reasonable prices on food. Had the enchiladas del mar, barbacoa, and seasonal guacamole and everything was fresh and prepared/cooked to perfection! My date and I enjoyed it so much we went back again the next week and ordered the same items. I've had some terrible Mexican food while in the triangle as well as some mediocre food but this was surely one of the best! Definitely worth a trip to try if you have a hankering for something good and new!"

The brunch menu is a delicious and innovative take on Mexican cuisine with a totally Southern touch.   • "Impressive beer and drink menu. Enjoyed the ambiance. The guacamole was good but not anything out of this world. Was excited to try the Tostones only to find that the pimento cheese and bacon overpowered the plantain entirely. Other than that the food was a bit greasy and salty. My collards were drenched in oil and the Barbacoa dish was so greasy, the oil overpowered the flavors of the dish. The skirt steak was tasty as was the portabella mushroom--but again, too much grease. I was really looking forward to trying this place since I love Mexican and Southern. I would come again to give it a second shot but if dissapointed a second time I would probably not recommend this place to a friend."

Virtually no healthy menu options & food very uneven (some too salty or kinda tasteless), & all levels of staff seemed very inexperienced on our visit-- but they also seemed to try their best.   • "The brunch menu has a creative selection of southern/mexican hybrid dishes, though it could use a few more lighter or healthier options - on the day we dined, if you didn't want a comfort food bomb the only options you had were fairly standard salads. That being said, the bacon used on the Breakfast BLTs was crispy and flavorful, and their black beans are tasty. Not a Raleigh local, but if I were I'd put it into a semi-regular rotation."

  • "My family dined here for Father's Day eve. We all ordered different dishes and beverages. The Mole Fashion was exceptional if you're into cocktails, especially old fashions. It had just enough bite and smoothness. We all shared bites from each plate: enchiladas del mar, market fish tacos (blackened mahi), and the skirt steak. My mom swears they were the best fries she has ever had. I agree. The verde sauce had a punch but was balanced. The mahi had a kick and the home made tortillas were to die for. I assume due to volume, we had a slow start with service. Once acknowledge, it was smooth sailing. We will try again!"

  • "We made a last minute reservation as we were walking there on a busy Friday night, and although we think this was an accident in their system, they rearranged a few things and sat us fairly quickly. Food was ok, but the brisket was a little fatty. The server was good about knowing what food had dairy in it (I'm lactose intolerant) and seemed to know what he was talking about. The music was great, and we might go back if we find ourselves in that area again. "

  • "It was our first visit. Chips, salsa, and guacamole started the journey. Both couples ordered the same dish. Pic-Nic for two i believe it was called. Steak, pork, chicken, and an abundant array of sides. Everyone was full and both couples took food home. The menu had many options that we are eager to try. The food is prepared excellently with tons of flavors working perfectly together."

  • "After reading positive reviews and hearing raves from friends, we knew we had to try the place out. On a Friday night, Memorial Day weekend, in fantastic weather, I thought there'd be no chance of getting in for early dinner -- there was a line around the block across the street at the Pit. But evidently Jose and Sons is still a relatively undiscovered gem. Lucky for us! In short -- from the friendly greeting at the front door to the food and drink to the service, we can give it only high marks. Nice plus is the nice, cool vibe all around and very interesting decor. "
