Diner Reviews
  • "Great food in Newport. Second trip as we are from New York. Food is great staff attentive. We were there opening day last year and happy to be able to eat there again. Took my food allergies seriously. Had the lobster salad on the most delicious home made brioche bread. Definitely will be coming back for years to come"

  • "First time here-will definitely return. Great service and food very accomadating. Pretty place indoor/outdoor dining. 22 Bowens must of been sorry to loose these former staff members!"

  • "On our last night in Newport RI my wife and I chose this restaurant based on reviews. It was an excellent decision! From the moment we were greeted at the door, our experience was wonderful. The ambiance was was warm and intimate. Our server Tracey, was courteous, attentive and very knowledgeable of the menu. With her guidance, we ordered appetizers of steamed local clams and an antipasto. Both were delicious. The entrees we selected were scallops and the salmon which were perfectly and creatively prepared. The chef Matt, is a true culinary artist!"

  • "My Wife and I planned a trip to Newport RI for our one year anniversary. After doing some research on TripAdvisor i decided this would be a great place to celebrate. From the moment we walked in we could not have been more pleased, the wait staff was extremely friendly and the food was amazing! We couldn't get over how good the calamari was as an appetizer. I had the lobster roll and she had a 4 cheese pasta dish with chicken, apparently hers was gluten free but you would never be able to tell. We will definitely be making a return trip next year!"

  • "Spent last weekend in Newport. Two couples, we loved this restaurant on Friday night at 8. We were on the balcony and very happy with everything."

  • "Nice, quiet restaurant with good space. Server was fantastic. Menu was very seafood-oriented."

  • "Tis former Italian staple of the Newport dining scene is all gussied up and well worth your trip. The service is faultless, the food outstanding, the menu diverse, and the drinks top-notch. Four of us tried Jo's and will definitely be back."

  • "Ate outside on a spectacular early summer evening. Everything was great. Hostess warmly greeted us and sat us outside. Waiter named Steve was very attentive and treated our kids, 8 and 10, like adults (although they did provide much appreciated crayons and paper menu). Wine list is full and has wide-range of great options. Clam chowder and clams with sausage appetizer were great. Fish and chips and Shrimp main courses were also excellent. This was our third visit in the last four months, and we're definitely going back soon."

  • "We often find that restaurant service is worse when a restaurant isn't busy. We had good food in a pleasant atmosphere but the meal was marred by things like our wglasses of wine arrivingg well after the course for which they were offered."

  • "The food here is spectacular. Creative, but not so over the top that taste is sacrificed. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful. The owner is hands on and will check to make sure everything is to you liking. This place is even better than its 4 and 1/2 star rating!"

  • "The food is very good, with a wide selection. The ambience is simple elegance, great bar. Have been there several times and will definitely go back. it is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant, definitely a cut above most."

  • "Food was good, portions on the smaller side but did not leave hungry. Would go back. My husband had steak frites which was okay but a little over cooked. I had the veal chop which was excellent. "

  • "This restaurant replaced one of our favorite restaurants in Newport so we were prepared to be disappointed, but we weren't. The only disappointment was, since we like eating outside in the summer, that it will be more challenging since there are fewer outside tables. The renovation, however, is very nice. We have been there twice now and will continue to return. "

  • "The service is great, the food is excellent and the ambience and decor are quite nice. It's worth stopping in just to see the wonderful renovation of this restaurant and the friendliness of the staff. Best of all the food is well prepared and reasonably priced. An enjoyable experience. And they will validate parking for two hours - a very nice thing for summertime in Newport."

  • "Jo's did a great job restoring the old Puerini's restaurant and everything is top-notch about the building, including the acoustical design in the ceiling to temper noise. When we arrived, the hostess was attentive and gave the kids their own menu and crayones. The waiter was prompt and friendly. We went on a Monday and they are featuring a fixed price menu. The clam chowder is excellent, as was the braised rib appetizer. The medium-rare steak and linguine with white clams were excellent. The carrots, which were just right, deserve mention. Great time and meal."

  • "The food was upscale modern. It was quiet for a Saturday night. My friends ordered items from the raw bar, the shrimp had a foul odor. We ordered various items from the menu (it was back in December and I don't really remember what anyone ordered). We thought the rest of the food was ok but not the fine dining experience we were expecting. The waitress agreed that the shrimp was bad. We did not ask for the cost of the shrimp to be removed from the bill and they did not offer... it just should have been done and wasn't."

  • "Jo's is a great restaurant run by a local. Do not confuse it with Jo's American Bar & Grill, the only OK chain in the Boston area! Much different, much better, not associated! Jo's was a great meal and experience with my parents. Good beer and wine selection, interesting menu. The lobster roll was unique and very good! Jo's needs to be discovered as it is fairly new- we went on a Sunday night in early May, so pre-tourist season, but the not so great restaurant Sardella's next store, which has been there for a while, was fairly busy. Little did people know that a much better restaurant was right next store!"

  • "We dined at Jo's with our two children. The food was great - nice atmosphere. Close to the main tourist part of Newport but off the beaten path enough to get a relaxed, quiet dinner. "

  • "We were visiting Newport for the first time & checked on Trip Advisor for suggestions . Jo's looked like it had what we were looking for that night . We both had burgers , which were delicious & cooked just the way we asked . Our server went out of her way & to serve us & had a very friendly disposition. If we come back to Newport we will come back to Jo's because of the food & service."

  • "My wife and i celebrated our anniversary over the weekend in Newport and dinner at Jo's was truly memorable! The food was delicious, wines by the bottle and glass are reasonably priced, and the service was top notch. If we lived closer to Newport, we would be regulars!"

  • "We wanted to have a nice place for our out of town guest. Nice menu with a lot of options. Will was very personable as a waiter. The evening was a hit."

  • "The menu had a nice variety of food; however I felt it was a bit overpriced. The service was excellent the waitress was very attentive without being overbearing. I believe where Jo’s disappointment for me was the food. I have had better food that was equal or less in cost. I didn’t feel “wowed” when I left Jo’s."

  • "My first time dining at this restaurant. I was very impressed. The menu is not too large, but has many eclectic dishes. A nice change from standard fare. The Appertizers of Jo,s Baked Oysters and Littleneck Clams with Sausage were superb, as well as the Entree,s of Braised Lamb Shank and Glazed Duck Breast. As a bonus, all Drinks were generous pours. Very Good. Will surely return."

  • "My guests and I knew we'd want a somewhat sane restaurant Saturday night after all the St. Patrick's Day Parade hoopla. This completely fit the bill. A nice selection of food, wines and atmosphere. I had wonderful duck, (hard to get in Newport) and my guests had lamb and shrimp- highly praised on both. We ordered two salads and each had a 1/3 portion- perfect amount. There were several other tables filled, but the noise level was pretty low. The service was friendly and timely."

  • "The menu is not exotic or adventurous but the food is prepared extremely well and the service was exceptional. We had salmon, duck, game hen, and fish and chips (for my 12 year old). My teenaged boys were welcomed there (not always the case in nice restaurants). I was extremely impressed with the high quality of food and cooking, clearly locally sourced ingredients (even in March) and reasonable prices."

  • "I found this restaurant on Open Table and asked at the Chanler, our hotel, what they thought. They said it was new and didn't know anything about it so they could not recommend. We went anyway and were glad we did. Their price fixe menu included the night's specials and a glass of wine! The martinis were large and ice cold. Our party of four all enjoyed our soups, salads and main course. We tried two desserts, both wonderful! Our waitstaff was friendly, attentive and professional. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal."

  • "We arrived early so we got good, attentive service from the friendly staff. The place was completely redecorated and was very inviting. The menu looked promising, and since we were the first ones there (on a Saturday night) we figured we had a good chance of getting their best. However, the squash ravioli with duck was almost tasteless, the fish and chips had bland fish and limp chips (which weren't even hot). The steak was a big plus as were the oysters, but the clams had no flavor at all. Either the chef was taking the night off, or s/he needs to go back to school."

  • "This is our 4th visit to this restaurant and as always the filet mignon was mouth watering. They have the BEST filet in Newport. Our server Will was fantastic! The only negative thing to say was that the place was LOUD where we were sitting. We will go back again when we are in the mood for a lively evening."

  • "Good calamari starter although a bit greasy. Arugula salad was good. My butternut squash ravioli barely tasted of squash and was somewhat dry and looked like a brown mess but ok flavor of duck and prosciutto. Wife asked for lobster sand w/o mayo and just butter but it was cold so I figure there was little to no butter."

  • "This was our first time in other than for a private event. We enjoyed it at that time and were looking forward to a great dinner. We ordered the Halibut special with anticipation. Unfortunately, what we received was a piece of pan seared Halibut (plain) and three mushroom ravioli's also plain...nothing on the plate but white fish and boiled ravioli. No sauce, no vegetable, no color, no flavor. The food wasn't bad it was just plain boring. I could easily have prepared a meal like this at home with no experience. The "Special" was not special, Very disappointing. $30 for this dish...not a reasonable price."

  • "Restaurant had a fantastic first impression. Clean and very inviting. Staff was great. Spring roll was devoid of taste and the lamb shank was so plain and tasteless. The duck was super tasty so i will end on a good note."

  • "Dining at Jo's was a first. We were there on a snowy night and everything was terrific. Hospitable and friendly. We had a nice seat and all was well.. I ordered a dish and it was okay ... certainly tasty. I ate as much as I felt like. While I wouldn't order it again there was nothing wrong with it. Prepared well, flavorful, fresh, just not my absolute cup of tea. When the server came to clear up she asked if there was anything wrong and I said no. The manager came over and asked if the dish was okay and I said yes. nothing wrong with it, I just didn't care for it but knew it was still a good meal. Then, without asking or complaining at all the dish was removed from the bill."

  • "This was my second visit. Both times the food was really scrumptious although one must question the ingredients of a dish. They tend to adulterate some dishes with hot spices when you would not expect it."

  • "We were very impressed with our first experience. The ambiance is cozy, well thought trough and elegant. The food is outstanding in taste, unbelievably huge in portion size, and well presented visually. The service was nice and efficient, the prices are very low for the quality and quantity of what you get. $19.99 Prix fix on Sunday was unbeatable deal. Hurry if you still didn't try this gem, you will thank me later."

  • "Not that we are tired of all the other fine eateries in Newport but a new hot spot is exciting and fun to visit. That's the way we feel about Jo's Bistro with it's beautiful new interior, friendly service and yummy food. They offer special events which are fun to try...the last wine tasting featuring Rutherford wines was extraordinary....the wine.....and all FIVE courses...superlative evening. We love it and encourage everyone to try it out."
