Diner Reviews
  • "It's a lovely restaurant with good ambience. The portions for Restaurant Week were too small, and the food was not as good as we thought it would be. My partner was excited for a good steak and was pretty disappointed. It ended up being very expensive for not a great product."

  • "Really enjoyed our night and dinner. Staff is friendly and excellent service. Delicious dinner and desserts."

  • "Steak was great--service was ok at best. Very noisy."

  • "Quality of the food did not match the very high price. Despite prices like L'Etoile, Harvest, and other top-flight Madison restaurants and a menu promising extraordinary food, Delmonico's delivered staid, conventional dishes: heavy on the butter, cream, salt, potatoes, and -of course- meat. Alas the petite filet was tough. A menu outlier, Japanese-inflected ahi tuna, didn't deliver on the promised salad (a few shreds of radish and carrot) and was served on decidedly undercooked soba noodles. An intrusive server didn't help. Not going back."

  • "We both had the tenderloin that was prepared perfectly. I had the hash browns that were outstanding. My husband had the garlic mashed potatoes that he loved. Our waiter Kerry (sp) was outstanding. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and a joy to talk with. He was very friendly. The manager was also very friendly. We will definitely be returning."

  • "This restaurant has excellent aged steaks, and a great ambiance."

  • "I wanted to take my wife out for our 28th Anniversary It just took way to long for everything....from the waitress getting to our table, to getting our appetizers, Then my wife and the other couple we were with wanted the 14 to 21 day dry aged 10 oz.New York Strip...the waitress had great knowledge of the steak so that's what they wanted...15 minutes after ordering she came back and said they were out of that steak ...we couldn't believe a steakhouse was out of any type of steak...so they ended up getting the regular 10 oz. Strip and it took 45 minutes or more to get our steaks...we did get a apology and got a free round of drinks. and we had made plans to go to another party but never made it because we were just to tired."

  • "Food was excellent - my steak was cooked exactly the way I like it. All four of us were totally satisfied. The waitperson took a long time explaining the options and differences, but did a very good job of it. A couple more fish/poultry/vegearian options (yes, I know it's a steak house) would complete an otherwise excellent menu."

  • "The steak I had and the steak and lobster my date had were absolutely amazing. Service was fantastic, waitress was informative and knowledgeable about the menu and came by often to make sure we were doing alright. We sat at a table in the front corner with a wrap around window view that was gorgeous! I would definitely recommend coming here for a nice date night or special occasion!"

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend. And, it's a Food Fight restaurant. So, it must be great. Wrong! On a Sunday, the large amount of business must not have been anticipated. Long delays between ordering and receiving food. When it arrived, my steak was luke warm. My wife's fish dinner was bland. While the chef was more than willing to accommodate our vegetarian's requests, the menu needs more than one (pasta) option. The spirits drink ordered neat could have fit in a thimble. Overall, the prices were steep for what was received. "

  • " I ordered the planked salmon. The salmon was flavorless and overcooked...almost as dry as the plank it was served on. The "yukon gold potatoes" consisted of one, tiny, potato which was sliced into many thin, bland pieces. The acceptable sized portion of asparagus was cooked appropriately but, was exceedingly salty. I was hoping to cleanse my pallet with the chocolate lava cake yet, this too turned out to be very diappointing. It was obviously plucked from the freezer and plopped in the microwave. It had a faint taste of freezer burn to it, while the "lava" filling was slightly above room temperature. It was served with a thimble full of mostly-melted ice cream."

  • "Every bite was delicious. Best meal I've had in a very long time. We were in town visiting our grandson and his wife. We found this while eating breakfast at Marigolds and decided to go for Easter dinner. We will definitely be back. A unforgettable meal. Lois Brown Tennessee "

  • "Suitable location to combine celebrations. Upscale and classy, felt like we were really stepping out. Gave my wife a chance to dress up and have a Cosmo before dinner."

  • "and was disapointed again...the Salmon I ordered was so salty it was not edible. Same with the asparagus. Sent it back and the salt was better but the asparagus was BLACK on the bottom (like they turned it over in the hope that no one would notice). Ruined evening- I had to sit and watch my boyfirend eat, then he got to sit and watch me eat, and to top it all off, we were late to our show. "

  • "The service was bright and bubbly and the steaks were the best we've had in a long time. The nosie level was much better than a nearby steak place we had recently gone to, so overall, an excellent experience."

  • "For the price of the restaurant, I expected a lot more. I ordered the walleye, and it was served with the skin on. Walleye skin does not just fall off, so it was a lot of work to actually eat my fish. Not a huge deal but a little annoying. My friend ordered the scallops and was served 3 small scallops as her meal. It was a good thing she ordered an appetizer, or she would have been hungry. My other friend ordered a steak medium rare, and it was served medium. Again, not a huge deal, but still. Finally our server was very slow. We told him, well in advance, that we were going to a show and needed to be out of there at a specific time. We were just being served our entrees at that time. Needless to say we missed the opening act of our show."

  • "The service, food, and ambiance were all top notch. I ordered the special dry-aged bone in ribeye and it was hands down the best steak I have ever had. Also, the beef carpaccio was the best I've ever had, and that is something I order every time I see it on a menu! Everyone at our table loved their food. I cannot wait to go back!"

  • "The food was some of the best we have eaten. We had an outstanding waiter we will be asking for when we return this restaurant in the near future."

  • "Though Johnny Delmonico's has excellent food and a great atmosphere, I think it is the customer service that makes this place great. From the maître d' to the bartenders to the wait staff, you notice a distinct difference in the level of customer service here compared to other restaurants of the same type. The only two warnings I would give is that dinner for two with drinks will probably run you around $150 including the tip. I know that's is more than some people wish to spend. The other warning is that the menu is very meat-centric. Again, I love their menu but if you are a vegetarian, you will have limited options. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will certainly return."

  • "We both had the Tenderloin. The steak was perfect. I ordered the Creamy mashed potatoes. They were smooth and just wonderful. My date had the hash browns. We both agreed that they are the best in Madison."

  • "Was serenaded by the sound of a screaming baby for 40 minutes. We have a baby, too, and I am 100% sympathetic to a crying child. Sometimes it just can't be avoided. Two opinions on this particular situation however: (1) It was a poor decision to seat a family with two young children in the center of the dining area with most other tables populated with two-somes. Clearly there were other tables available that would suit all patrons better. (2) The parents could have done SOMETHING to soothe their child, but instead left her in the car seat crying the entire time without even acknowledging her, soothing her, or taking her out of the seat. We left after some OK appetizers, which were not compelling enough to keep us for dinner."

  • "As always, a fine experience at Johnny's. Selection great, including excellent seafood for those who aren't being carnivores. It was a little odd how few people were there, but it was very early for dinner and a Sunday. Waitstaff excellent, well prepared, friendly but not hovering. Johnny's is very consistent and never disappoints. Wonderful salads and desserts too."

  • "We had some friends come in from out of town had a enjoyable dinner. You don't see your coctails taken from the bar to your table like at Johnny Delmonico's and a coat check . It just adds that special touch. Every entre was perfect. Steak prepaired to perfection. Two of us had seafood perfect, chicken moist and tender."

  • "I wanted to love this place, but in the end - I loved the service and the food was ok. Basically I gave the food 3 starts, but my server Jamie got 5 stars so I compromised with a 4 star review. My steak was good - I ordered it medium rare and it was a lot closer to rare - but hey, I am adventurous. My garlic mashed potatoes were over salted - not to the point of inedible - but definitely noticeable. The appetizer was a bacon wrapped scallop - the scallop was well cooked, but completely overpowered by the bacon. Maybe just ill conceived? Bacon should be used to wrap things otherwise devoid of flavor. I got the soup of the day - which I would rate just OK...sort of one note. On the positive side - the drinks and the service was excellent."

  • "We go to Delmonico's a lot and it always amazing. The service is always wonderful and the food is out of this world. The only thing is that you don't have appetizers that are non sea food. The ambience is wonderful and the staff is always amazing."

  • "I booked my reservation with Johnny Delmonico’s online with OpenTable. I also ordered a flowers on OpenTable too. I would like to thank them for a job well done. Everything was perfect. The flowers were at our table when we were seated, they put a huge smile on date. I would highly recommend using OpenTable when booking a reservation. It is so easy and a big time saver, plus you can go on-line any time of the day. Great experience."

  • "Delmonico's is a Madison classic. The food, service and ambiance were all great. Our only issue was that we had a wait station right next to our table. But, they have a limited amount of "real estate" within the restaurant so it is an understandable limitation that really didn't detract from the experience. We ordered appetizers, salads, main courses and desserts. Everything was "spot on" and as expected. I recommend the crab cakes if you're a fan. These were exceptional. The service was impeccable and delivered with panache and character. I highly recommend the restaurant especially for a special occasion."

  • "Saturday last minute reservation still available Busy on arrival, so we watched the bartenders and had a drink. The hostess kept us apprised of our table for seating - great job. Our waiter was very busy and kept moving. Kerry still made time for interacting and helping us. Our water glasses were full, the drinks were on time and the food was warm. The calamari appetizer was good, but not as flavorful as I remembered it. But I had the best steak I have ever had at any of the best places in Madison. The salad plate was full, fresh, nicely light in dressing and very flavorful. The aged sirloin was very tasty and very tender. I was full and had no room for more food though my mouth wanted more. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening."

  • "Title says it all. It's pricey enough to restrict dinning here to special occasions. Definitely would not take kids here. Noisy enough to give the waiters trouble saying the specials. But the food more than makes up for it. I normally do NOT like steak, but I finished mine. Says a lot!"

  • "While it may be just my personal taste, the food does not reflect how much $ you have to lay down for it. I enjoy my own home cooking much more than I did my meals here. We gave it a shot again, and once again we came away disappointed. There is a high likelihood that when finding a place to dine for a special occasion, we will look elsewhere."
