  • "This was a great discovery ~ we were in town looking for a great vegan meal for one guest and steak for another, it was perfect on all fronts. The view is stunning. The service was attentive, friendly and personable. I was amazed at the reasonable prices as well ~ excellent food, service and selection. Highly recommend."

  • "I had been to this restaurant as a visitor 3 years ago. I brought my wife with me this time and she loved every minute, the food, wine an to my surprise Robin was still there delivering 5 star service, advice and conversation. A great night out."

  • "My party of four went to John Davenport's on a Wednesday night. It had a fair crowd when we got there but thinned out almost completely before we left. Two of us had the steak and scallops entre which was superb with steak you could cut with you fork and a zesty au poivre sauce. The service was very attentive and friendly. The view of the city from the 19th floor was impressive."

  • "I brought my parents here for a scenic breakfast the morning after Yale graduation. Though Davenport's was 15 minutes late seating us at our reserved table, I was lucky to find curb parking and only had to interrupt my meal once to feed the parking meter. Why don't they validate? Anyhow, my dad loved his smoked salmon platter, my mom loved her vegeterian quiche, and I was stunned and enamoured of the blue crab Eggs Benedict! While I am not a fan of English Muffin underneath, the blue crab made the whole outing worthwhile. Do not miss this deliciousness if you are in New Haven! I have also frequently eaten Davenport's deliciously diverse Breakfast Buffet on Saturdays, and I must say the bacon is always PERFECT."

  • "Five of us had breakfast here the morning after Yale graduation and it was not busy. The buffet was very nice and the omelet station particularly well done. We were seated on the harbor side and it was great, but because of the angle of morning sun, the side facing the green is much better this time of day. Good service, bagel and lox very good indeed (salmon billed as 'local'). A perfect ending for a very special weekend."

  • "This was our second time at this restaurant. We had a 6:45 reservation, and we were seated promptly. The service is very good. Friendly, attentive staff. The restaurant itself is very pretty, decorated nicely with candles and flowers on each table, nice linens, etc. The food is very good, although the menu is quite small. The choices, though, have all been excellent and from appetizers to dessert, we have never been disappointed with the quality, presentation or taste. The view from this restaurant is also very nice. We arrived in daylight, and left in the dark, so you had lots to look at as the sun was setting over the city, and then the night sky, with the city lights is also very pretty. We will absolutely be back! "

  • "We had a table for four overlooking the New Haven Green and the Yale Campus. It was quiet enough to enjoy a conversation, and the service was excellent. I had Greens with Artic Chard--excellent for a light supper, and plenty of room then, to share Bananas Foster with my husband."

  • "Brunch not what it used to be. No waffles. Only a few side salads. Lack of adequate $ of servers. Twice had to go get the coffee/orange juice carafes on our own."

  • "We were looking forward to brunch here on Sunday. The views were unbeatable. Don't think one can get better views in all of New Haven. But it stops there. Service was pretty much nonexistent. Brunch buffet was bad. Bad food, few choices, often out and took forever to bring in new fresh food, cold when it got there and EXPENSIVE. I say go up, look at the views, then go somewhere else to eat."

  • "A fantastic fine dining experience. Robin was a super friendly and attentive waitress. Her menu recommendations were spot on. The specialty menu featuring Washington state was unique and full of wonderful flavors. We tried an appetizer, entree and dessert from this menu, and we were so glad we did. Did I forget to mention, the view over New Haven made us feel like we were on top of the world!"

  • "I was heading to New Haven for a Sunday brunch with our two children and my son had insisted we wouldn't need reservations anywhere. But as I checked with a series of restaurants from the train they were all full. I was able to book a table at John Davenport's and I remembered they had a spectacular view. I showed up half an hour earlier than the reservation I had booked on Open Table and the hostess was very gracious about allowing me to be seated before my two kids arrived. I was very relieved and had a pleasant time looking out over the view with coffee. They have a fixed price Sunday brunch and it was quite good. We had smoked salmon, fruits, quiche and an excellent blueberry muffin. It's a good atmosphere, bright and relatively quiet."

  • "My husband and I had dinner for the first time at JD's this week for my 30th birthday. I had been wanting to try the restaurant for some time now and I can't believe what we've been missing out on! From the moment we arrived I knew that the atmosphere was just what we needed for this momentous occasion and despite the rain that evening, we still had a spectacular view of the city and, being a week night, it was so cozy, quiet and romantic. The waiter, Chris, was very pleasant and service was wonderful the entire evening-we thoroughly enjoyed that we were not rushed at all that night, and his recommendation of dessert was phenomenal! Tim checked on our meals & brought us complimentary champagne for my big day-so thoughtful! Thank you!!!"

  • "The setting, the hospitality, the outtstanding service made for a really pleasant experience for this solo diner. Excellent drink service and great French bread helped too! I had the roast chicken entrée. It was better than average, while not spectacular. I expected a traditional roast chicken on the bone... this was actually a large de-boned, breaded breast, thinly sliced with a good reduction for a sauce and three roast heirloom (?) carrots. Overall, the meal was sort of average, BUT the waitress was so absolutely wonderful that I'd return in a heartbeat!"

  • "Although John Davenport's overlooks Yale U it's a great place if you're visiting Quinnipiac University too. Our two sons attend QU so we're often looking for a good spot, there isn't too much in Hamden. John Davenport's is 12 miles from QU. The meal we booked on OpenTable was for one of my son's birthday's. Because of a snowstorm we had dinner that night and breakfast the following morning at JD's too. Lunch was great. I had Halibut, my wife had Arctic Char, and my son's had the Tenderloin. We also had the Lobster Tempura as an appetizer. That evening I had the Diver Scallops and my wife had the Butter Salad. Dinner was great too. I found all our servers to be very attentive. Good spot, very scenic day or night, not hotel food."

  • "This was our first time trying the restuaraunt. After making reservations i got a call about 3 days before valentinea day telling me there was a prefixed menu. With it being almost last minute we had no time to change places. I felt like it had too much of the same option vs. A meat from each group."

  • "I spoke with staff prior to making reservation and changed plans to bring my group to Davenports for New Years brunch based on the menu. Although the place was practically empty our table was not ready. Then we were informed - no brunch - but we were welcome to choose from the regular menu, rather unappetizing at 11am on a holiday. What was supposed to be seething special for a family that just lost it's Patriarch, was just okay. Nice view, but there was a reason you could here a pin drop - no patrons. Should have left."

  • "John Davenport's has a breathtaking view overlooking all of New Haven providing a romantic ambiance. The food was absolutely amazing and were perfect portions. Our waitress was very pleasant and even remembered having myself at one of her tables a few months back."

  • "Delicious and paced, one of the best butternut squash bisques out there. We had a lovely view of the New Haven green and a nice quiet table."

  • "We at here for late lunch/early dinner on Christmas Eve. The staff was very attentive, and the view is one of the best of New Haven going off in almost every direction. The server made good recommendations when asked. My dad and I each had steaks and were happy with how they came out. In my case I think it was the best tenderloin I have had in a long time. Vegetable sides were ala-carte, but reasonable, and very well done. My mom ordered the Grilled Cheese Sandwich and was pleased, she especially liked the cherry jam that came on the side."

  • "We were disappopinted. It was our 2nd time in 1 month and there were some problems. They were out of the wine we selected as well as 1 of their few specialty drinks which we had the last time and really wanted again. We ended spending more on the wine than we wanted to. Also 2 people ordered the char with eggplant tian. It was fabulous the first time this time the eggplant was unedible. Instead of soft, rich and creamy melt in your mouth it was tough and chewy. The side of asparagus and spinach much smaller than the 1st time we were there."

  • "Buffet Thanksgiving dinner was cold and tasteless. People at next table agreed. Very few vegetables offered. Staff kind but slow as understaffed. View is nice."

  • "The restaurant is on the 19th floor of the Omni Hotel and has floor to ceiling windows for great views of New Haven and surrounding towns. Modest decoration in muted tones provides an understated elegance that make it perfect for business or romantic dining. The wait staff is warm, amiable and professional. The food is excellent in both taste & presentation which is simple and not an "art project" as you may find in other high end eateries. Recommend highly."

  • "We had a wonderful evening and we dine out often. Our waiter was exceptional and the lobster appetizer was over the top. Can't wait to go again. It was a little too much food for us. The salad and app was more than enough. We shared a dinner but felt uncomfortable not ordering dinner in such a nice place. Next time would not order dinner and maybe share a dessert instead. Had no room for dessert. Bar area looked interesting. Will try it next time"

  • "Ambiance: The view of New Haven in the fall was breathtaking. Service: Overall attentive solid service, nothing to complain about but wasn't a "wow" either. Food: -Taste: Greek salad was good, the burger and crab cake sandwich were amazing! Best hot sandwiches in New Haven and the cookie dough spring roll was innovative and spectacular. -Presentation: Gorgeous"

  • "Dinner is reasonably priced and high quality. Surprisingly doesn't attract too much traffic, so quiet and seats close to the window (with stunning views of New Haven) always seem available. Service is enthusiastic and excited about the food. The cookie dough spring rolls are one of the can't-be-missed food items in New Haven."

  • "Scenic view; tasteful, understated decor and quiet surroundings. Much confusion regarding brunch offerings. We confirmed with telephone call that pancakes and crab eggs benedict available at Sunday buffet after 11AM. No pancakes or eggs benedict at buffet. "Egg table chef" said they could be ordered from kitchen. Waitress checked with manager and said we were misinformed but when I pointed out online and telephone confirmation, they made what we wanted. Couple seated as we were paying our bill had similar experience but were not accommodated and left restaurant without being served. Not sure if we would return. I indicated "YES" on review because they did provide us with breakfast."

  • "The restaurant is on the top floor of the Omni Hotel and easy to overlook, don't because it has great food along with a lovely view of New Haven and beyond. Unlike many restaurants, it is also calm and quiet so a good place to have a conversation while you dine."

  • "The views can't be beat, and the Sunday brunch was delicious. The food was fresh. The selection was wonderful and there were some really nice gluten-free options. For egg lovers, there was a chef preparing custom omelets."

  • "What a wonderful little restaurant I found. I was looking for a place to go for dinner and a friend recomended The John Davenport. I was amazed at the Place. The wait staff were so friendly and kind. I had the scallops and I received a generous portion. It was great!"

  • "Our waiter was horrible. He was late with our drinks the first time, and we had to ask busser to fill up other times because our waiter basically didn't come back around until we got food, almost 30 mins later, which is crazy because there are only like 15 tables in the restaurant. I had the omelet, and it was actually really good. So was the cinnamon rolls, except he forgot we order them and we had them boxed up because he remembered when we brought the check. As a former restaurant employee, I am usually forgiving of service when things are busy or when difficult situations occur, but unfortunately in a week long trip, it was by far the worst eating experience, and I would not go back."

  • "I took my cousin here on her birthday -and this will be a restaurant that she will never forget! Our server Robin was amazing!! She was so personable,, and just down right perfect. The food was impeccable! To say they don't have an extensive menu -what they do offer was DEELISH!!! Including the cocktails. The view at night is flawless. My cousin and I were taking so many pictures -you would think we were tourist..lol. I would highly recommend this place. The ambiance is so romantic if you are planning a date night, or just go to a classy place."

  • "Clearly the stand out feature of John Davenport's at the Top of the Park is the fantastic panoramic view of New Haven, including Yale campus and the harbor. There is nothing like it in the city and it is my favorite New Haven restaurant, one I've returned to many times. The food is excellent and very well presented, though the menu's selection is relatively narrow. The service is superb and has consistently left a very positive impression. While I am rating the ambience as outstanding on account of the view, I would mention that the music choices made in the restaurant (mostly 50s/60s pop) are actually quiet irritating and unfortunately do detract somewhat from the experience. Something instrumental would be less intrusive."
