Diner Reviews
  • "John Ash remains a most pleasant, upscale restaurant that never fails to meet our expectations. The excellent cuisine is complemented by fine service with a nice feeling of the wine country while just on the outskirts of Santa Rosa. We have been dining at John Ash for many many years beginning with their first location in Montgomery Village. It remains a wonderful restaurant for special occasions as well as a perfect quick stop at the bar, known as the Front Room, for a drink and food after work or for an informal evening out. "

  • "Most locals consider John Ash the best restaurant in Sonoma County, and our recent dinner surpassed expectations. "

  • "Unfortunately, our wait staff was way too eager to take our dishes before we were done, giving us that feeling of urgency in dining. Our main waiter was excellent, but the courses came to quickly and we felt rushed, although the restaurant was not terribly busy."

  • "It was a terrific dining experience. Great food and service. Wonderful setting."

  • "We celebrated a birthday of a good friend and it was a delightful evening. The food was absolutely terrific, both the starters and the entrees including a fabulous steak. Service was great and they were gracious to open the wonderful wine we have bought on one of our tastings to have for this evening. Would love to go back!"

  • "Enjoyed our dinner very much. Good food, excellent service and atmosphere. We will go back."

  • "The food was disappointing. The waiter attitude was as if he were doing us a great service by waiting on us. He was more interested in the large party that was ordering many bottles of wine. The food was good but disappointing. I would go again but if the service and food are not improved I would pass."

  • "We had reservations for our anniversary. We were promptly seated. Took a little long for our wine to come. Food was average - too expensive for the quality. I had the halibut which had too much dressing on it and the fish was a little cool and maybe even fishy. My husband had the scallops and shrimp over white beans.... weird combination - they should change that. The waitress was okay but seemed tense. We have been here before with a large group and we sat in the garden room.... that event was great. I would still come again but hope for better food and little more attentive service."

  • "Welcome to wine country, largest selection of reasonably priced wines you will find in a fine dining establishment"

  • "Beautiful setting, great food and wine at a reasonable price point. We'll definitely return on our next wine buying trip. Recommended by one of our favorite wineries for its vibrant happy hour and bar food but we came for dinner. Definitely reserve in advance as the parking lot and tables were well filled."

  • "Overall experience was very positive. Table was ready a few minutes later than our reservation but it was no big deal. Service was excellent. Gnocchi app was great, bread served was also delicious. Main courses were cooked to perfection, the steak & twice baked potato stood out. The dessert's including the special one the server brought to us to celebrate our anniversary were perfect. They also decanted a older bottle of Jordan Cabernet that made the whole meal."

  • "This is not a young, hip spot. If you are looking for the young crowd then this is not the place to go. However, the food is great, service is impeccable, and the wine list shines to support local wineries. My mister and I had a wonderful evening here that was filled with delicious food and great service. It was a fantastic experience and everything we ordered was perfectly cooked. This was not my first time here and probably won't be my last. I like that you can dress it up or down depending on your occasion for being there. We both gussied up a pair of jeans and I felt quite comfortable and not under dressed. I have also known people to go there for prom, so it can be what you make of it. The patio is super romantic at night."

  • "The food was a little too 'foodie' for my taste but was excellent. The cheese appetizizer was superb and our food was delicious. The scallops and prawns were cooked to perfection. My only complaint was that the greens were too spicy for my taste. Our waitress was very good and friendly."

  • "Disappointed with our dinner. Moroccan lamb had no hint of Morocco. Very blah and gamey tasting. The spring greens salad suffered the same fate. Service was great and desserts divine. But won't go back."

  • "Our server was excellent. We looked forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary with our family and enjoying a memorable meal. Our appetizers were creative and good. The person who ordered the rib eye was pleased. Four of us ordered the shrimp and scallops on a bed of white beans and spinach. It was so salty I could hardly eat it . Three other people ordered the same dish and said the same thing. The spinach and white bean layer made the dish soggy, not appetizing with shrimp and scallops. We were both disappointed and somewhat embarrassed that several people from our party did not have an enjoyable meal. The following day I did not feel well. My hands and feet were bloated from the salt. What a disappointing anniversary meal : ("

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant many times over the years and it always lives up to our expectations. Many years before that I took cooking classes with John Ash at the Junior College and he was fabulous to learn from and work with. Bravo!"

  • "Steve as well as the entire staff did a stand up job during our service, we were well tended to throught the meal. It was our first time dining at your restaurant and we couldn't have been more pleased! The decor was simple and elegant and the food wonderfully prepared. A perfect Restaurant Week dining experience!"

  • "John Ash & Co continues to be my restaurant of choice when I want to spend a romantic evening with my sweetheart. I think this is by far the most romantic spot in the whole of Sonoma County. The food is truly wonderful, and the wait staff is amazing. If you're lucky enough, you'll be seated at one of Steve's tables."

  • "Very accommodating hostess and terrific waiter complimented the patio dinning experience at John Ash. There were three selections of an entry and salad/soup with two desert selections as well. Monday night was also a no-corkage night as many of the quests arrived with a bottle or two. Overall the food was very good. My swordfish may have been slightly overcooked, but with everything else done to perfection I'm not going to complain."

  • "Very limited, eclectic menu. Food was good but not as outstanding as the price would suggest. Service was a bit overattentive but better than being ignored."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful dinner out on the covered patio. The heaters keep it warm, but the noise level was up there. Perhaps I should have dined inside, although when leaving, it seemed inside was a little noisy as well. Overall, a great place to dine. Food is delicious and service is outstanding. The Front Room Bar, attached to John Ash Restaurant, is also a great place. Happy Hour is awesome....went there two nights oout of two!!!!! Would definitely recommend to anyone!"

  • "Stayed at Vintner's Inn thru Travelzoo deal, which included a discount on John Ash restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyable evening...Beef filet was large, tender and perfectly cooked. Love the calamari appetizer! We were treated to a pickled beet tidbit before the meal...delicious. Service excellent. Highly recommend dining here."

  • "The food was excellent and our server, Patty, was extremely personable. My wife had the surf and turf and I had the filet. Both our meals were outstanding. We enjoyed chatting with Patty about the area and things to do during our stay. She was so warm and friendly it made our meal even more enjoyable. I look forward to another wonderful meal at the restaurant when we are in the area."

  • "From the time we came through the door we had a wonderful experience. the service was tops and the first courses were so filling we had a hard time finishing dinner. We were seated in the enclosed sunroom and the feeling was 'quiet'. As the evening arrived the light s shining off the windows were magical. The way room was set up it was intimate."

  • "John Ash is consistently good and Valentine's dinner was no exception. However the menu was limited for the occasion and the presentation was not quite as beautiful as usual. The dining room was decorated nicely with red and white balloons, and confetti on the tables, so it felt like a party atmosphere. The raspberry meltdown flourless chocolate cake was superb!! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience."

  • "When a medical emergency interrupted our delicious dining, staff was most attentive and helpful and took care of calling an ambulance and notifying us. We managed to get out with our guests without disrupting the rest of the diners. We'll come back soon to order another memorable meal, maybe with the same couple. We appreciated both $30 coupons being credited."

  • "Food is perfectly prepared. Our waiter was very accommodating. It was a very busy nite, being Valentines Day, but they were willing to move us to a quieter table when requested. This is a special place to go for a wonderful dinner or special occasion."

  • "We were seated on the enclosed patio portion of the restaurant and enjoyed beautiful views and quiet dining. The food was good although we ordered the filet and one of the meals the meat was slightly overcooked but still good. The wait staff and the atmosphere were lovely and we would definitely go there for a special occasion again."
