Diner Reviews
  • "Jaleo has sensational food, but it is not pretentious, formal or too stuffy. It is casual, fun, delicious. Its a good place for a business meal, family events, or a fun night out."

  • "Overall, the dining experience was good. We had a party of 3 and ordered 6 dishes. The gazpacho was delicious; the mushrooms were awesome; the sauteed onion/red pepper mix was OK; the chicken crochettes had no chicken (they got the order wrong); bacon wrapped dates were good; the pork sausage was good. BUT THE SANGRIA WAS AWFUL!!! It was weak and tasted like watered down kool-aid."

  • "I have been a regular at Jaleo (DC) for years; it is truly one of the city's gems. The food is invariably excellent; the tapas are varied and exotic enough (with good seasonal rotation) to make this an excellent venue for entertaining out-of-town guests - there is something on the menu to accommodate almost any taste / preference. On my most recent occasion to dine there (on a not-too-busy Monday), however, the service was definitely not up to the restaurant's usual standards. The waitress was generally inattentive, and we had long periods between being seated, ordering drinks, and our meal. Similar situation with the table staff - long waits for table to be cleared btw courses, etc. Maybe the "B" staff works Mondays?"

  • "My wife and I tried 10 choices from the menu and we each enjoyed a glass of spanish wine. This place is not budget friendly but will give you a great experience of the Spanish (from Spain) food culture. Portions are very small and exploit the name "tapas" but each item is very true to its Spanish replication. I wish I were in Spain again, but this will suffice for now."

  • "The food was delicious! Everything tasted great, especially the toasted bread topped with tomato. The service was great also. It was a well-run, gourmet, Spanish restaurant."

  • "Always excellent. God I love the spinach. Hopping even after 10 pm. Good place for dinner prior to a nightime monuments tour."

  • "We had a really nice server, and we liked most of what we ordered. We will definitely return!"

  • "Jaleo was an old friend as we relocated in Washington, DC, from Seattle, WA: A dozen lunches/dinners at Jaleo in 3 weeks: the flavors, varieties, the magic of tapas to make 6 or 8 choices...then played the field...two dozen high end French, Greek (love Zaytinya), Italian, American, fusions, a delight of choice and quality, and almost always excellent, fresh, sustainable food. THEN: back to Jaleo DC after a 4 month absence: new summer menu. My wife and I were absolutely blown out of the water: 3 specials, 3 shell fish, the flavors-textures-looks-smells-freshness and each extatically different & novel overwhelmed us. New deserts: an intense berry "soup/cheese" and an extraordinary and unique "gin & tonic" ice cream: best of a lifetime."

  • "We had dinner with family visiting from our of town. The meal was pretty good (the fresh, cool foods were stellar-- the fried items less so), but our biggest complaint was waiters constantly trying to clear the table before we were finished. We felt like we were run out and didn't have time to relax and join the meal and drinks. The cocktails were also amazing, if a bit overpriced."

  • "Always fun to be at Jaleo, and on such a gorgeous Friday in late July. The meal, from beginning to end, was outstanding as was the service provided by Jorge T. Not only is he knowledgeable about the menu, but he watches to see when you need his attention without hovering - the perfect combination. We are always in good hands with Jorge. The "liquid" olives are still a huge favorite and those were followed by a wonderful watermelon salad, perfectly cooked rice with mushrooms and more - lovely!"

  • "Went here for my birthday dinner with a group of 7. We loved the food, everything that came out was delicious. Priced reasonably. My only complaint would be the service, waiter forgot to bring out some items that were ordered and needed to be reminded. Busy place"

  • "First off all the tables are so on top of each other the waiters and customers are not maintain a comfortable distance, often times having to touch and rub behinds to get past one another. The food was so give or take. Some dished were overly sweet while others bitter and overcooked. Nothing had any salt at all and pepper wasn't an option; but then, there was no room on the table for any extras. That was probably the last time I eat at this over-priced and uncomfortable restaurant."

  • "All my visit to DC I take dinner or two or three (depends how long my visit) in Jaleo. I think there Gin-n-Tonic oysters is best appetizer, Ajio Blanco is best soup and Iberico steak abov all competitions."

  • "A friend recommended the restaurant and what a delitgful experience!!!"

  • "We are Spanish and José Andres's tapas are very simple. Good for americans who doesn't know our cuisine but not for Spanish travellers :("

  • "Unfortunately, we were seated directly next to the back door of the restaurant which proved to be very annoying when their outside seating is busy. Every 15 or so seconds, the door would swing open and slam closed making conversation almost impossible. We asked to be relocated to an open table adjacent to us, however they were unable to accommodate due to fact that the place was packed. The food overall was mediocre, and we were really disappointed by the paella. Despite the terrible experience due to the seating, the manager did attempt to compensate by picking up the bill for the sangria - which was nice."

  • "We did one of the tasting menus. The food was simply amazing. A really great mix if classic tapas and some innovative, molecular gastrinomy elements. Those can sometimes be weird, but the execution was flawless. The only complaint I'd have was the service was a little too prompt, and the tasting had a little too much food. It was so good, we had to eat everything, and then hardly had room for the full sized deserts that were included. For 70pp, the mid tier tasting was a definite winner."

  • "My wife and I visited this restaurant to see it from our pov after learning about it on Anthony Bourdain's show. Loved it! We tried a variety of different tapas, and all were fabulous, especially the salmon crudo and croquettas de pollo - YUM!!"

  • "Excellent food, but you will probably leave hungry. It is tapas style, meaning high prices for small portions. The dishes are very rich and delicious, but save for the paella (excellent) you will have to order plenty ($$$) to feel full. Take your wealthy parents here so that they can pick up the tab."

  • "It is a tapas bar, so it can be pricey, but overall we enjoyed our food and the service there and would recommend it for anyone looking for a Spanish style tapas bar."

  • "La comida es increíble, como la española. Pero me hubiera gustado comer mis croquetas en las zapatillas de cristal."

  • "I'd been to Jaleo many times, but never for lunch. The sandwich option is very nice...the $25 three-course menu that my colleague ordered seemed like a ton of food. Chips (despite the special packaging) didn't seem all that special but the sandwich was excellent. Sometimes a little challenging to get server's attention."

  • "I like to bring guests to Jaleo for lunch because the food is excellent, and also because of the variety -- the appetizer-size tapas plates allow even a small party to try lots of different things. Usually I don't make a reservation, but on this last visit, I did. The day before, I received a phone call to confirm the reservation, and also to inquire whether I had any special requests or needs. I replied that it would be nice to have a table where 2 friends who hadn't seen each other in a while could sit and talk. When my friend and I arrived, we were shown to a nice booth towards the back, where it was quiet. We were able to chat and have a leisurely lunch. The wait staff was attentive, without being obtrusive."

  • "Easy to get to; fun. We tried several dishes and all were good; I especially liked the seafood paella. My guests cleaned up every morsel of every dish. The hazelnut ice cream with the chocolate dessert was great. It's noisy, so if you're trying to conduct business it may not be the best choice."

  • "Wonderful food and service. Waiter steered us correctly and paced food in a very good way. Yummy desserts, too. Only complaint is that the coffee was quite weak."

  • "The menu is very extensive and the choices intriguing. The service is outstanding and recommendations were well worthwhile taking. The food is well prepared and presented. The restaurant is a "keeper"."

  • "This place is great with the exception of the loud music. we moved to a table by the north windows and that helped. But the previous weekend, my husband and I had to ask the manager 3 times to turn it down. We come at 11:30 for brunch expecting it to be quieter but the young manager just doesn't understand how older people have hearing issues and the experience is less than pleasant when this is the issue. We may leave right away in future visits if we can't get a table away from the speakers above the registers on the north window sides (banquet seating). You are our favorite brunch place but we need more robust action when we request the music be turned down."

  • "Loved the paella, signature shrimp and crab salad! Very busy on a Thursday night - very loud but fun atmosphere. I don't recommend the marinated chicken, it lacked flavor and was a bit greasy."

  • "Jaleo's food is tasty, attractive - my wTermelon salad was visually appealing and tasty! - and doesn't come on platters. 2 friends and I shared 6 plates of garlic shrimp, fresh tomato rubbed bread and the best potatoes with aioli ever cooked"

  • "Two words that don't often go together. Many favorites on the menu, and they come out consistently good. Also: thank goodness for some Sherry in DC - a good list here to try. Because the tapas come out as they are ready, never feels like you are waiting long."

  • "My husband and I dined at Jaleo in early July and had a splendid meal. The food was all great, the service though sometimes a bit confused was fine. The table setting in the restaurant is a tad too close so overhearing the conversations of other diners was a given but that provided opportunity to share in the dining experience and make more informed choices off the menu. I would recommend this place to any prospective diner."
