Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I thought we would check out Jake's Grill for dinner Saturday night. Our experience overall was good except we were disappointed in the table they gave us. It was a table for two at the end of a busy thoroughfare. We weren't expecting that since we made our reservation ahead of time using open table. Our server was great, we purchased a bottle of wine and she made sure our glasses were always full. That was only because she had to walk by us several times while we were sitting there. I would recommend Jakes, just beware of where they sets you in the restaurant."

  • "Jakes Grill is in a 100+ year old building. The bar fixtures could be original. The service is from another time: formal but friendly; attentive but efficient; timely but not rushed. The food is not haute cuisine but basic American fare, superbly prepared and well-presented. The fish is utterly fresh. I have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. The bar was delightful for an afternoon martini, and my bartender Shawn was a gem. He was both friendly and efficient. I was amazed by how hard he worked, serving all the patrons at the bar, taking orders from the waiters, and washing the glassware. Jake's Grill retains qualities from another time: it not only appears great, it delivers on its promise."

  • "The meals were excellent, the evening was delightful and the walk to the Schnitzer for the concert was pleasant."

  • "We are from out of town and love to eat at Jake's! The food is fabulous and the bar is beautiful! Can't wait for our next trip!"

  • "Our Menu was printed special for us with "Happy Anniversary" at the top. It we had a nice private table with a view of the clock tower. My espresso martini was excellent, although I really with the waitress would have asked if I wanted another one. I would not recommend this for my fellow celiac sufferers though. Plain steak and potato's were the only options available to me. Which while it was excellent fare, I could have made this at home for much less than the $36 it cost. I guess it was just frustrating to have a $100 meal with my husband, but didn't get to enjoy the cocoa rub or demi-glace. My husband had the short ribs and he said they were good, but not as full of flavor as desired."

  • "Paper on tables? My meat was cut for me? Fake candle? No matching silverware? Service wasn't as nice as the suits they wore."

  • "Jake's is an attractive, somewhat formal, classic style restaurant. Service was very good. All of the food was well prepared and delicious. It's not a hot new innovative place, and sometimes that's great."

  • "Excellent prime rib and very comfortable atmosphere!"

  • "We went to Jakes for my birthday. What a big disappointment. The service was terrible and the food was just as bad. Thanks for the great birthday, NOT!"

  • "We arived at Jake's where we were greeted by staff quickly. We were seated by window where we could watch the people walking by going about their day. Our waitress was right on top of thing and got our drinks and warm bread. She then came right back and took our order. Our food came in reasonable time and was delicious. To sums it up I would give Jake's five thumbs up."

  • "Great service with Maryann. When you make your Reservations request Maryann. She is just as outstanding as the food and makes the dinning experience memorable."

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Jake's - we ate off the Portland Dining Month Menu and it was delicious. It was our first time in Portland and I said that in our reservation and they had held a wonderful window table for us. Everyone was great - friendly and went out of their way to make the experience a good one."

  • "I love going to Jake's. In my 7 trips to Portland in the last two years - and with the myriad of dining options available - I've dined at Jake's on three separate occasions. It's beautiful and the food is amazing. I'll be back again...and again..."

  • "Our food on Sunday was exceptional, as always, although if we'd given this outing a bit more thought, we would have chosen an evening so as to have had a larger entree menu from which to choose. Our server was friendly, but seemingly in haste much of the time. We are always pleased with our experiences at Jake's, and Sunday was no exception."

  • "Excellent experience as I've come to enjoy over the years at Jake's. One of my top 5. Need to up the attention to detail on the server service a bit, but other than that most excellent. (It was pretty busy)"

  • "Jakes is always great. Albiet a little pricey, the restaurant month menu, for $30 for 3 courses, was great. Check out their Happy Hour menu and Prices!! Better than most in this happ-hour centric town."

  • "Visited Jake's while travelling. Everything was perfect. Last time we were there was also when we were on a road trip a couple of years ago. Always good."

  • "I thought we would be eating in the dining room, but it seems it was closed, so they put us in the bar. Nice booth, great server, but the food was not as good as it should have been. I wish we would have chosen Jake's Crawfish."

  • "We took customers out for a business dinner. The atmosphere and ambiance were perfect. Location was close to downtown hotels making it convenient for all. Chilled Fruits of the Sea made a great appetizer and conversation piece for the group. Steaks were cooked to perfection. Wine was excellent and not overpriced. Waiter was knowledgeable and service was excellent."

  • "Our meeting lunch was off consistantcy as the two other meals portions seemed fair for the price, but my salad which cost $14 was smaller than the side salad ordered by my perspective employer, and there was only about 1 1/2 oz of shrimp on my shrimp salad! Very disappointing since it it a "fish house"!"

  • "Been to Jakes Grill many times over 20 years. now owned by Landry's chain, I had hesitation to go to a chain steak joint. However, it didn;t let me down. Everything was prepared well, nice wine selection and in line with other similarly priced steakhouses."

  • "We have eate her before and the food and service has always been great. This time was no exception. The only complaint I have is the main entree. It sure would have been nice to have something besides meat and potaties on the plate. There was a lot of potatoes with my entree and no vegetables. It just seemed out of balance."

  • "It was a wonderful dinner with great service. We went for a special night with the family (kids 12 and 9) and a show. I would recommend it to anyone. Elegant but unpretentious. Parking was fairly easy just a block down. The only complaint ( they can do nothing about) is it looks out on a plethora of food carts. Ruins the atmosphere a bit. Otherwise it was perfect."

  • "I love the ambiance and space of Jake's Grill, but I won't eat there for dinner again. The food was quite marginal, certainly not up to par compared with other similar places and prices! Too bad Landry's, the owner of the restaurant, doesn't pay better attention to food quality. Stick to the bar or lunch."

  • "The food at is always fresh and delightful. A great place for lunch downtown where the server is efficient and pleasant. Jake's is my go to restaurant when I meet friends for lunch when I have appointments downtown. We know we will be in & out within the noon hour and that the food will be delicious!"

  • "It was packed but the food was good. Our waiter was a bit frazzled and brought our wine well after our food but everything was really good. Would go again."

  • "We tried the Portland Dining Month menu and everything was top-notch. The salad dressing was actually a standout for me. Well balanced with unique flavor. Would definitely recommend to a friend."

  • "Not a great spot for Valentine's Day. Reservation was honored 30 minutes late, restaurant was wall to wall packed, and not a very romantic situation. Salmon was perfectly cooked and Halibut was overcooked. The good news was we didn't feel rushed but it was obvious our poor waiter was overrun to keep up with his tables. Not a very relaxing environment."

  • "Ordered Salmon (madam) and Steelhead. Taste was just a bit off. It was not bad but not the quality one would expect from Jakes. Madam ordered coffee that did not arrive."

  • "I have eaten at Jake's a number of times and always ordered fish and seafood, but this last time was the first time I ordered beef, namely the fillet. I like the meat rare but am rarely served anything approaching rare, usually more like medium. My steak was perfectly cooked, as was my partner's, who ordered his medium rare. Everything about the meal had this detail of attention. It made for a memorable Valentine's dinner."

  • "Four of us went for dinner the day after Valentines Day, Had the Chilled Fruits of the Sea, two T bones to share with our wives (seems that they always get the filet), potato leek soup and Seafood Salad. Everything was amazing except for the one thing that I expected to be the hit, the T bones. The issue was around the tenderness of the meat, I could not cut mine with the steak knife that was provided and my friend just picked his up and chewed it off the bone (not the classiest move in a nice restaurant, but less frustrating then trying to saw a piece off). This is not what I would expect for a 21 day aged cut of meat, especially at or near a premium price tag. Final note, this was our first time and may have been a fluke. Hoping so."
