Diner Reviews
  • "We were in Portland for one night only, recuperating from a flight back from Hawaii and traveling the next day home to Virginia. The driver from the rental car shuttle recommended Jakes to us and after reading some online reviews we decided to give it a go. We are glad we did. We frequent McCormick and Schmicks restaurants here in the Metro DC area so we were please to see the connection. The service and food were superb. If we come back we will be sure to eat at Jakes again, or at least recommend it to anyone we know coming out to the Northwest. "

  • "The food is consitantly good here and the Chocolate Bag dessert is to die for. The people I was with were not too enthusiastic about any dessert until they tasted this."

  • "The servers wore white service costs. Proper. Subdue. Excellent. Menu went beyond cedar plank salmon or herb crusted halibut. Scallops surpassed run-of-the-mill seared crustacean. Liver & onion, a rare find nowadays. The variety afforded a well balance price options. Go for the sauté crab leg meat to splurge. Fish & chips or fettuccini for more affordable & still savory staples. Scallops succulent. Crab meaty. Liver tender. Escargot buttery. Fish & chips fresh & crispy. Generously portion crab dip. Do make a reservation. For a larger party you may be in luck to get a private nook by the front door. The curtain wraps you in a world of your own, yet never far from the bustling walk-ins who have procrastinated their dinner commitment."

  • "Once we got a table we liked, it was a very relaxing enjoyable experience. I ordered the salmon and halibut sauté, which was phenomenal! We were not in a hurry so the service that was maybe a little slow just added to the ambience. We had a very nice dinner."

  • "Popcorn Crawfish was excellent. Everything we had was superb. Definitely one of the best seafood restaurants I've ever eaten at. But the absolute best thing was the wait staff. They were extremely attentive, helpful and humorous. Our waiter was an older gentleman who might possibly have been the best waiter I've ever had. He knew the menu, preparations of each dish and the wine list in such great detail. He even dealt with one of our guests peculiar eating habits with humor and ease -- she asked for Seafood Newburg but hold the Newburg!!! He was hysterical, accommodating and just terrific. He made our evening! :)"

  • "The service was very good. The food was good but not great. For the price I expected great. I wouldn't be in a hurry to go back."

  • "My husband and I celebrated my college graduation at Jake's when we were dating. 10 years later, on our 8th wedding anniversary, we still celebrate at Jake's. John Castro is the best server and a big reason we come back. We make sure to request him every visit. The food is delicious, and when I don't know what to get, John has always nailed his suggestions."

  • "I have been to Jakes a great number of times. I am sorry to say, that this visit was just okay. The salad, which was the spinach salad(my favorite), was not very good. The dressing was mostly oil and not much flavor. I had the razor clams, lightly breaded, which is also one of my Jake favorites. They were, more the most part, very bland and tasteless."

  • "Had a great time and the best part was the server. He did a great job and made our night enjoyable."

  • "OUtstanding restaurant with amazing food and service. While we had reservations, people kept coming in droves and didn't mind 30 to 40 minute waits without reservations. They had either heard of the food or already had eaten there. Outstanding"

  • "Definitely a local institution patronised by locals and visitors. Good food and atmosphere. Prices are strong for quality on offer. Good to visit to gain local experience. Loved the efficiency of our server who took our order without writing it on paper -a skill definitely not around in modern day dining. Certainly a charm to experience."

  • "Just possibly the best restaurant in Portland. Excellent staff, outstanding ambience and, above all, outstanding food. Jake's never ever disappoints and we always go there (at least once, if not twice) every time we visit Portland."

  • "We've always considered a certain restaurant in San Francisco the best for all of the above reasons. However, this visit we realized that Jake's far surpasses any other restaurant we have ever eaten at. We will continue to return whether it be special occasion or just because."

  • "Everything about this experience was exemplary! Our waiter was helpful but not overbearing. He knew when to give us extra time to chat before we decided on each course. He never rushed us! Each course was exquisite. My business associate loved the oysters and I loved the smoked trout, which was not on the menu but which our waiter recommended based on my comments! The beet salad was amazing. We actually shared our entree, the to-die-for crab dish with artichokes and rice. It was more than enough for 2 and they served it already split for us! The wines he recommended and our port were also top-notch. Can't wait to return!"

  • "We love jakes crawfish especially the razor clams. The Sevice has always been outstanding. As you are leaving the tip you ask yourself is 20% enough. We always walk away content full, satisfied like it was a new experience in life. It is almost like being in a foreign country and going to one of those restaurant recommended in all the travel guides."

  • "I have been to Jakes Crawfish many times and this did not disappoint. Good food, lovely setting. Hard to park so use the garage around the corner. Our waitress was a bit overbearing which was distracting. But other than that a lovely ending to a weekend long 90th birthday celebration!"

  • "The food was excellent but expensive. I was in Portland for a week and would have liked to eat there again, but went to other restaurants that were less expensive. My compliments to the chef and for the service, overall."

  • "Jake's is our go to for special occasions and the occasional romantic meal. The service is always great and the food is fantastic. In twenty something years of visiting this landmark we have not had a bad experience."

  • "The food was great. We had reservations for 8:30pm. We showed up on time but had to wait 15 minutes for our table. In that time, two groups without reservations walked in and were seated before us. I feel that for how much they charge for dinner, that the place should have been a bit more classy."

  • "One of the oldest in Portland. The restaurant is beautiful and the food delicious. You should definitely make reservations on busy weekend nights. A wonderful place to eat."

  • "We dine here a few times a year, and are never disappointed. Selection, presentation and taste of food is always sensational! the wait staff has gotten younger in the last couple of years, but no less efficient and knowledgeable."

  • "busy place, lots of children, noise level high. our booth was an oasis, except for the speaker over our heads. ambience is not loud music with adult and kid chatter. Server was excellent, knowledgeable, helpful, sharp ear. Food was plated well and delicious. Wished there was three more bites to fill me up."

  • "Jake's is in the top 10 restaurants in the US, you will never find another with the attention to details in dining and quality of fresh food as you will in Jake's. I travel for a living and eat in a lot of high end restaurants and I have never found another as rich in tradition nor quality of service and selection as Jake's. Waite staff and Waiters, Reception, Bartenders, all make you feel at home, and attend to each and every need you have some even before you know you want it. Get ready for action this place is always busy and full to the brim with excitement and crowded, don't forget to make a reservation you will need one."

  • "Two of us went for the Portland dining out special, a $29 promotion offered by a number of restaurants for the month of March. We shared an appetizer of oysters on the half shell. They were very fresh and delicious. I had a tasty salad with walnuts and feta while my companian enjoyed the rich clam chowder. We each chose the crab and shrimp cakes. They were crisp on the outside, full of flavor and accompanied by perfectly cooked asparagus. We finished with a berry cobler topped by ice cream. Our waiter offered helpful explanations when asked, checked to see that we had everything we wanted without hovering or interrupting. His cheerful, friendly manner contributed to a very enjoyable experience."

  • "I have been to Jake's many times and look forward to my next time. A welcome ambience, true courtesy, very professional server, and many many choices. One of my friends had liver which is hard to do well. He said it "was the best he had ever had". Go to Jake's for really good food. You will be back."

  • "We walked past the day before and got great recommendations for Jake's so we dove in. Steamed clams for apps---wonderful! Excellent suggestions by our server made for a wonderful meal and experience. Make reservations!! It gets busy. Great old fashion cocktails and mixology present! We went with a Wedge salad and I had the Chef's recommendation of the Sole….cooked the way that you hope great traditional seafood will be cooked! We will go back."

  • "Food and service is excellent. We went for my wife's birthday and it was perfect. Making reservations is mandatory since Jake's is a very popular place."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "While the décor is the same and the service is fine, we see the quality at Jake's is going the way of many Landry's restaurants. The calamari was overly salted and overly breaded; the rockfish was unacceptable - our friend couldn't eat it; small portions on the crab Louis salad and baked salmon. Overall we left the restaurant thinking about finding a new seafood restaurant in the Portland area. And we have loved Jake's - we dine there often, 2x a month - we could rely on it for an excellent meal. In the last year, we have seen Jake's continue to move from a once great landmark restaurant to a so-so, middle of the road restaurant. Too bad."

  • "The menu items are prepared well, have good flavor, but lack creativity. I am a big fan of seafood, and have had outstanding meals here before, but nothing on the menu grabbed my interest that night to choose it for dinner. I had to ask the waitress for the Portland Dining Month menu, she said she had never been asked for that before and seemed a bit bothered that I asked. I have no complaints about the food, but there should have been a couple of more creative menu selections and the service could have been a bit more personal."

  • "We went on St. Patrick's weekend so it was busy. The food was excellent. Service great. Only concern was the noise level. The menu is overwhelming..."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "Jake's is one of our favorite places to go. The seafood menu is varied and fresh, and many of the dishes can be modified easier for a gluten free diet. The desserts are wonderful, and the option of a small dessert make it a course that can't be left out. The wait staff is professional and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant--just be sure to reserve early on a Saturday night."

  • "I admit I am a bit of a foodie, but given the other choices to dine in Portland, the place ,for me ,is past its prime......the food was expensive for what is was and only fair to good overall. My wife's wild salmon dinner was expensive, overcooked and dry and I only 4 smallish scallops for about $30. I would say if friends came to town and really wanted to try an old institution I would not dissuade them from going to Jake's , however."

  • "We had a wonderful evening, delicious food, wine, and all our expectations told us by our friends were met. For breakfast the following morning we are ate at Jake's Grill and it was equally as excellent."

  • "Had a waitress you acted like my mother (I am 50 years old) by telling me what I wanted (wine, food, dessert). When she brought the food she said there is nothing more you could possibly want! How about some lemons for the lobster? I turned to my out of town guest and said "I sure hope this woman is not my nurse some day on my death bed in a nursing home. No tableside manner or social awareness. When we got the bill I told her to ADD my club card points to my account, she came back smiling and proceeded to tell me she had DEDUCTED my points to save me $25. What a joke, I expect so much more from Jake's. I go there once a month."

  • "We very much enjoyed a pre-theater dinner at Jakes. The food was outstanding. We had a very knowledgeable waiter who contributed significantly to our dining experience. We have dined at Jakes many times and it never fails to please."

  • "I checked in for my reservation but opted to wait at the front until my date arrived. The staff knew exactly when she walked in and seated us immediately without us having to check at the front a second time."

  • "Great dining for any occasion. Service was prompt and attentive. Food was amazing! The only issue was that it seemed a little too warm on our side of the restaurant. Otherwise, great choice."
