Diner Reviews
  • "Although this was our 1st visit, my wife & I were welcomed like old friends. The service was wonderful, the wine recommendation was spot on. The food brought back memories of the meals our mothers served when we were young, the deserts were great. We were visiting San Diego, if we lived in the area this would be a place to go on a regular basis. "

  • "For well over 30 years we have gone to Jack and Giulio's for SCAMPI GIULIO'S. It is so rare that you can continue to get this awesome dish time after time over that long a period and it still pleases every time. I'm not sure that scampi could be done better anywhere."

  • "Has been a while since previous visit. Menu has undergone updating, much improved. Additions to our liking; veal & eggplant parmigiana was my choice an dit was very good; will have again next visit. My lady always has the shrimp scampi and did again, she loved it. Wine list has also been revised, most new labels I'm familiar, but reasonably priced. Nice alfresco dining area."

  • "We have been going to this restaurant for almost 40 years for its signature " Scampi Giulio" and it has NEVER disappointed. The dish itself is outstanding ( giant butterflied shrimp, lightly breaded, in a champagne, mushroom, butter sauce) that you devour and then reach for a piece of bread to slather and capture any remaining sauce. The chef owner, in his 80's , learned to cook from his father in a restaurant in the shadows of the Milan Opera House, and carried his recipes with him to San Diego. It's a treat to share this delight with anyone who comes to our city for a visit."

  • "This restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere. The sauce used on the spaghetti was exceptional. It had a very rich, deep flavor. The Caesar salad portion is plenty to split between a couple. Our waiter was very attentive, making sure to keep our wine glasses filled. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something other than Mexican while in Old Town."

  • "Hostess, bartender & our waiter were all very friendly! The food was "average" at best! Although restaurant is located in Old Town, we were hopeful this restaurant would surprise us. It didn't! We will not return.."

  • "Food was good! really liked the Scampi , which is their speciality. ...This restaurant was recommended by a friend.and didn't disappoint ! Service was a different story. ...waitress was surly with us ans was already getting her tip since we were a large party.....hire some friendly staff. ."

  • "If you are, this is the place to go in Old Town. Everything we had was fantastic. The staff was extremely friendly & accommodating. We will definitely go back on our next visit to San Diego."

  • "After reading other reviews, I was disappointed in the food here. My husband & I split the house salad of romaine, Parmesan, walnuts and tomatoes with a house dressing. The lettuce was limp and cut in small pieces rather than torn. The grated Parmesan cheese was almost non-existent and only a few grape tomatoes graced the salad. My husband enjoyed his veal Marsala that had lots of mushrooms and nicely slices of veal. I ordered the house special, Scampi Giulio, which consisted of 6 large but overcooked, rubbery, butterflied shrimp in an undistinguished brownish sauce that lacked lemon and garlic. The dish was accompanied by some overcooked string beans. The waiter was attentive but the place could use some updating."

  • "I found this place on Yelp! ...and followed the reviews right to the front door, and the pics right to the plate of delicious Cioppino. Excellent service, very enjoyable meal."

  • "Jack & Giulio's is hands-down our favorite restaurant. We got engaged there and have celebrated many special events in their establishment. Normally, we stay home for Valentine's Day, but we had tickets to the Globe and thought we'd go all out. It was busy, but not packed, but our service was not what we're used to. Won't deter us from going back. Even greatness has its moments. Tortelloni Verde rocks!!!"

  • "Jack and Giulio's is always a pleasant experience for us...they are very attentive and we feel by using OpenTable that we get a great table at the restaurant with the reservation. The food is consistently outstanding and we know that whatever we order it will be perfect...hat's off to Giulio who was cooking this night for us...great restaurant, great food, great service...you can't ask for better than that...outstanding evening for us!"

  • "We went to this restaurant on Valentine's Day. Other reviews suggested that it was a long time neighborhood restaurant. Their website was good and the menu was great. Unfortunately the website did not mention that The Valentine's menu would be severely limited. My husband ordered veal piccata. He has had this at many fine restaurants, and the dish was definitely NOT piccata. The only aspect that was similar was veal, and that was tough. When he asked the waiter about the dish the waiter insisted that the dish was indeed piccata. To be sure my husband looked piccata up on his iPhone and showed him that it was not even close. His response: well that's the way we've always made it. There are plenty of good italian restaurants in SD. Not this 1"

  • "I was expecting more from a restaurant with a 27 in Zagat. The Bruschetta was heavy and soggy. They tried to do too much (cheese and other unknown ingredients) instead of letting great bread and tomatoes carry the dish. I would go if I was a local but not worth a stop from someone out of town."

  • "Ive eaten here many times over the years, and I have never been disappointed! The food is excellent always and service is always extended with a smile! I highly recommend this restaurant for great authentic Italian food."

  • "Amazing classics, great wine list, and a welcome option from the rowdy sow for tourist Mexican tortilla restaurants and bars. Our favorites: Scampi a la Giulio and Tortelloni Verde."

  • "Not as good as I remembered. It has been about 4 yrs since dining here; so the food/dining experience did not meet my expectations. Salads were over-dressed-wine by the glass was limited and the food lacked that specialness that I expected. Bread was good."

  • "The restaurant was too small for our large party. The server was stressed and the cook was rude. A request for extra sauce on a side of vegetables was met with "oh no, the chef doesn't make any changes to his food" Sorry, we thought it was our food. Not very friendly overall."

  • "I never miss a chance to dine at this restaurant anytime I am i San Diego. In my opinion, Scampi Giulio is the best shrimp scampi in San Diego by far."

  • "We dined at Jack & Guilio's on Christmas Eve. The restaurant was busy with families who have a tradition of dining here on this holiday, yet the experience was top notch. The food was fantastic, with incredible pasta made on the premises. This will be our new Christmas Eve tradition!"

  • "The atmosphere was warm and inviting - the dish I ordered came to me nice and hot and not hot like sitting under a heat lamp hot, like just out of the oven, hot. It was delicious too - had the Ravioli's - yum! My husband had the steak special, was very good - the presentation of both plates was a tad blah, but the food was delicious, our waiter was excellent. I'd definitely return."

  • "We have been going to Jack and Giulio's before there was the Jack in Giulio's.It was a spectacular place when they were on Thomas and now a great Old Town location. By far the very best northern Italian food to be had...not just in San Diego but ANYWHERE. Always the same consistently great food. Tortellini Verdi to die for...and of course you have to have the scampi Giulio. The service is always top notch. If you are looking for a romantic place this is it. Old school romance. An actual restaurant where you can sit side by side and carry on an intimate conversation with out being blasted by Muzak . I can not find one thing that I would improve upon. They have it all going on!"

  • "Thank you Jack and Giulio for carrying-on a wonderful family dining tradition for some 40+ years. In a city where Giulios Restaurant blossomed along side so many other great Italian family-branded restaurants, it's great to see your traditional great recipes, food and service carry-on under Jack's care. It continues to be an incredible and traditional Italian dining experience."

  • "Great little spot for a nice Italian dinner. Food was good and the service was very good. The inside needs some updating but all in all a nice experience. 4 of us, with just three glasses on wine came in at $150. I was thinking it was a little more reasonable on price."
