Diner Reviews
  • "We did the Teppan yaki meals and the portions were generous. However, each of us was disappointed in the taste of the food. It was bland. I expected more soy or teriyaki taste on the chicken and rice. We paid the extra money to have our rice cooked on the grill. Some soy sauce was added but the rice was still bland and gummy. The chicken had no flavor basically. The prices are high so we had hoped to enjoy this meal more than we did. The staff was nice and the cook was entertaining."

  • "Expected much more than what was delivered. Prices aside. When one adds in the prices Imari falls short. I would recommend to find a better venue. The food was average at best."

  • "Then you should love Imari. They do a great job at cooking the food to your liking. I had steak and lobster and it was done nicely. The service was very attentive and the sake recommendation was spot on. The teppanyaki chef was entertaining and engaging which is what people have come to expect with this kind of meal. On the expensive side so don't go with a light wallet. Take pictures around the grounds if you have a little time before seating."

  • "If you want to have a table cooked dinner for a special occasion in a gorgeous setting at the Hilton Waikoloa Village you might try this. The food is not spectacular, the portions a bit small, the time allowed seemed shorter than at other such restaurants, and I feel it was over priced but overall it was a good choice for a celebrative occasion."

  • "Beautiful ambience, but mediocre food. We ate at the teppanyaki tables and I ordered the New York Steak and Shrimp combo. The steak had fat on a lot of the pieces (not sure why they don't cut off the fat before cutting up each filet on the table) and the extra large shrimp looked great but were totally undercooked. I've eaten at teppanyaki restaurants all over the world and this was the most disappointing as far as the food goes. It was kid friendly though. Plus did have great ambience and good Mai Tai's. Maybe just go to the bar for a drink."

  • "We had the Teppanaki. The grill wasn't clean when he started, there were still visible particles and burned on food on the grill. The order in which the items were served were odd, who wants to eat bean sprouts alone while waiting for all else? The chef didn't do anything impressive, just a few silly moves. Scallops were good, but nothing special. The New York steak was not trimmed and it was really unpleasant to bite into sheer fat and gristle. We were stifling hot by the time we were done and the decor is dated/tired. Overall, expensive and not worth the price. This in no way comes close to Benihana."

  • "There were four of us and everyone enjoyed it. I loved sitting at the tepan table. My ribeye was a little overlooked though. I asked for medium rare and it was more medium. Nice evening."

  • "Diaappointing in almost every way. There was absolutely NO SHOWMANSHIP. The guy did a simple onion volcano and THAT WAS IT. No other "tricks" and and no audience interaction. EVERY other one I've been to, the chef interacts with folks--asks them where they're from, if they're celebrating a special occasion, etc. and does lots of fun stunts--catching an egg in his hat, knife twirls, etc. Not here. And the food was mediocre at best. The steak was so chewy my daughter couldn't eat it. The chicken was blah. And it was miserably hot. Seriously, when it's 85 out, you need to turn on the AC In a place like this. We also rushed, and were horribly cramped--they squeezed 10 people onto a table sized more for 8-9. Terrible experience."

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed this restaurant, the atmosphere and food was great. This was our favorite meal on the island. Only small complaint was the temperature in the dining room. It gets a bit hot with all the teppanayki grills going at the same time, so some fans to move the air would have made this a perfect 5 stars!"

  • "Great service, great food. Exactly what we were looking for. For those going without kids, try to go later. We only could get an early reservations and there were a fair number. And get reservations! It fills up! Teppanyaki is the way to go too. The full experience!"

  • "the beef had a distinct 'old' taste ... not like aged 'old' ... more like old cuts, recut. the chairs have been refinished and re-bound since our last trip, AND they could use a 'lumbar' type pillow like the bar has in their already padded seats. i know this furniture store in kona that has great fabrics and exceptional padding, island collections. after a while you want to be able to just relax. and at 300bux+ for 2 adults and a 6 yr old, from bar thru dinner, i don't think that is out of line. service is always good, and its not benihana ... the 'chefs' need more work dropping spatulas and laughing about it is very hawaiian practicing to really be a 300bux dinner ... again, isn't out of the question."

  • "A fun spot when vacationing in Hawaii and looking for a different type of dining experience with or without kids. The “show” was enjoyable and the food had lots of flavor."

  • "We went there on our last day on the big island, we really wanted something special. I love Japanese steakhouses, and visit them frequently back home. Normally when you go to these types of places the chefs put on a show and make it fun. Our chef did only one else trick, the volcano. He tried 6 times to build it, and kept knocking it over. He finally got it, but that was the only thing he did. When it comes to the food, it was average. I got the steak and lobster, the steak had a lot of fat on it. You get about 5 pieces and I couldn't eat 3 of them because there was so much fat. The prices are above average too. Overall I would not go back, its just to expensive for what you actually get."

  • "Nothing really to differentiate it from the many other tepanyaki/hibachi restaurants I've eaten at, except for the prices being "Island"-level."

  • "Went there with the family on Xmas Eve with my wife and three daughters. Been to other tepanyakis before that were more fun but the food was great though a bit pricey if you ask for steak. Good selection for kids that really helps. Good service."

  • "We stayed at the hilton on the last leg of our 2 week Hawaiian vacation for our 25 th anniversary. My husband loves Benihana's and was hoping for something close and he wasn't disappointed. The food was was wonderful and the service was great. We had fun people at our table and all really enjoyed the night"

  • "The food was really delicious but we couldn't really enjoy it because everything happened too fast. It was like having to eat all the time due to one course directly followed by the other. It felt like the resataurant wanted to have as many guests as possible and therefore quickliy prepared the food. All in all the location is beautiful but we weren't able to enjoy the evening."

  • "We do a lot of Japanese restaurants as well as a lot of Tepenyaki style (cooking meal in front of you). This was not good in either category. Would not recommend it."

  • "We've been going to the Waikoloa for years and every time we go we eat at Imari. The food is great and the Teppan chefs are always top notch. It's perfect for our whole family. We can't wait to go back again. It's been getting expensive since our family has expanded, but it's always worth saving a few extra pennies for."

  • "My sister visiting from Az took my husband and I out to thank us. I had a special request for low sodium, no salt. My request was handled beautifully and my food was great. I really felt catered to. However, my husband who was reluctant to recommend this place was again disappointed with his steak which was very gristly and the lobster was hardly noticeable. Very small portion. My sister said her filet was the best she had ever had except lacked seasoning. The service was great."

  • "Usually the experience at this type of restaurant is a fun and enjoyable evening - especially for our children who love the interaction with, and showmanship of, the chef. unfortunately, our visit to Imari fell far short of expectations. In short the chef was no showman and of the standard fare for such chefs only performed an onion volcano and hardly interacted with us. Then, the steak served (modest portions) was full of gristle and fat - which is odd since the chef had a pretty sharp knife to cut it off - even after cooking if he wanted! Would never go back there again and feel that we were cheated out of some serious cash. Plus, we were kept waiting far past reservation time even though the place was pretty empty."

  • "Upon request we had a great romantic dinner away from the happy folks around the Teppanyaki grills. They opened the doors to the koi pond, loaned us reading glasses (!), and treated us to on of the best meals of our travels,,,"

  • "We celebrated my brother's 60th birthday, group of 9 people. We were treated like royalty. The manager was very accommodating to our needs and the requests. The server was very professional and had a good sense of humor too!"

  • "Not a good value for money. Sushi is great, though. Teppanyaki is a real downer for the place, the chef just did his job (cooked food) and left - no entertainment, and I believe that was the thought behind the creation of this style. Food was not tasty, as there was a distinct smell of oil and cookware. I ended up ordering sushi, and sake (very good selection). Service is very good, friendly and attentive."

  • "We were not staying at the Hilton, but decided to come here for my birthday dinner. The set-up was confusing: seating was available at the teppanyaki areas, at the sushi bar, and at regular dining tables. I didn't realize my reservation was for teppanyaki -- I had already consulted the menu to make sure there was an acceptable vegetarian option for me. Instead, we were seated at a teppanyaki table with five other people, where the only thing I could order was a vegetable stirfry (basically just the veggies that everyone else got as a side to their meat/seafood dish). At least a small salad, miso soup, and rice were included in the meal. Food was so-so, service was fine."

  • "The main reason I did't give a better rating was that the meal felt very rushed. The chef was cooking our veggies while we're were eating the soup, so the veggies got cold before we could get to them. The service was attentive, but the chef is cooking at the table could have been more entertaining (the joke "it's my first time" while tossing the knives is a bit stale). Instead of the teppanyaki, I suggest opting for a regular table, especially if there are four of you; the teppanyaki tables do not allow easy conversation."
