Diner Reviews
  • "There have been some concerns about the changing of executive Chefs recently, but allow me to put those concerns to rest. While Chef Teddy Diggs has added a new flare to the cuisine while keeping it consistent with what you have grown to expect from this rustic, upscale Italian landmark. The homemade rustic pastas are offered in small and large portions, with the lamb ragu being especially bold and balanced. They also offer entrees for two and an extended tasting option. The direction adds more depth to the menu than previous iterations. The wine list continues to boast the fine selection of Italian wines in addition to a variety of other countries' offerings. Finish off the meal with the lemon curd bomboloni, you'll thank me later."

  • "What a delight! Wonderful menu, fresh and seasonal. PERFECTLY prepared and presented. The portion size was correct; the colors and combination of seasoning texture etc. was excellent. The house focaccia was excellent. The wine quarto for the same price that others charge for a glass is brilliant. ALL the wait staff, maitre'de, wine steward, etc., were kind, attentive, well mannered, conversive, and made the entire experience a joy. It was very busy that night, and we were told very politely, that our waiter would be with us momentarily; even though he and all the staff were very busy, we were made to feel like we were the only ones they were waiting on. Can't wait to come there again. Changes by the new Executive Chef are wonderful."

  • "We consider ourselves foodies and have eaten all over the world, including Italy. We have never had a nicer meal. My husband's Osso Bucco was particularly outstanding. My buccatini was excellent as well. And the focaccia bread! It had no need of olive oil nor butter and it was nicely different. My husband splurged and had the chocolate torta for dessert. Wow! It came with the most fabulous bing cherries ever. (I stole two) My only comment was that since it was so very rich, the portion size could have been smaller. It could probably be enough for two. THe staff was also knowledgable about their wines--a real plus."

  • "For foodies going the gluten free route, you may want to make an exception here. The bread was an out of this world experience. Olive oil from Umbria has been infused into the dough, along with the weaving in of Rosemary and sea salt. The baking preparation creates a robust crusty exterior while allowing for a soft texture within. Having picked the 4 course menu, I wanted to limit my bread consumption but found my willpower to weak to stop. The menu was not overwhelming in choices but provided enough variety to satisfy the curiosity of both timid and adventurous diners. A wonderful find in Chapel Hill."

  • "Great meal and service the second time just like the first. Worth the drive from Elon."

  • "I love elegant lunches, and Il Palio delivers better than any place I know in Chapel Hill or Durham. The service was outstanding, the waiter extremely knowledgeable, and the ambiance was conducive to quiet conversation. The food itself was excellent -- interesting selections, beautifully prepared, and what I really appreciated was a dessert menu that showed some real thought and creativity. I've been eating at Il Palio for over twenty years and it really has taken itself to a very high level of food and dining excellence. Highly recommended!"

  • "The staff at Il Palio was gracious and attentive, the food excellent, and everything but the delivery of the check (and its calculation) handled in a timely fashion. The only problem we had was with the final disposition of the check. The waiter had a problem breaking the larger check into smaller, separate ones and returned after attempting to do this with the wrong configuration of checks. Only one group of our party of 7 received the check they asked for. The larger check was also not delivered in a timely manner after we completed our dessert. I'm not at all sure our waiter was to blame; rather, it may not be the policy of Il Palio to routinely break larger group checks into smaller ones. I would suggest this be allowed in the future."

  • "They had run out of the Monkfish by the time we got to order so we ordered 2 pastas and 2 Sea Bass, which were served whole, way too salty, oily and not at all to my liking. Gabriel kindly took those fish dishes away and replaced them with the most delicious gnocci and ravioli dishes! It made my night! The service was fantastic and so was the entire experience. Bravo for handling it so well!!"

  • "We have been here a number of times and always find food and service to be exceptional. Unfortunately, my main course was served very cool and when I asked for it to be heated, it was returned seriously over cooked ."

  • "Having a gift certificate, we were interested in a restaurant we'd heard had excellent food. True. The flavors were very nice, imaginative and well done. However, our party consisted of hungry people. It was a long time between drinks, and ordering, and service of the food (tepid) and the requested bread never arrived until into the meal. The portions were tiny. My husband, a former pro football player, looked strange seated before what I can only describe as a lasagna cupcake for his entree. The prices did not reflect the paucity of the servings. Not a great value, and as good as the food was (gnocchi with lamb ragu was great--but only 4 gnocchi?) there are other places in the Triangle with excellent execution."

  • "Went there Sat night after V-day. Learned a new chef was making headlines. Turns out that "new" chef isn't there anymore. It's almost like we should know when chefs leave as we do corporate executives. At any rate, my wife's lasagna was cold and my steak was more grizzle than meat. Only highlight was chocolate torte which went well with the excellent wine (we brought)."

  • "Our experience was very nice but frankly not at the top of our list and the cost was a bit high for what you got or did't ger. Service was a great improvement over previous ownership. Food was nice but what was served did not seem to follow what was specified on the menu. For. Valentines day there was nothing special provided, I.e. Flower or an amuse bouch as there always has been at most other places. At $79 without wine it was a bit steep. Stil not crazy about the dining room being basically in the hotel lobby."

  • "The food has declined to fair on some dishes, still good on others. The overall average plus food can't possible make up for the very poor service. The service is beyond terrible. There are many far better choices in Chapel Hill!"

  • "We shared a pasta with cauliflower, raisins , and pine nuts that was out if this world. The sword fish main course was very nice. Innovative without being pretentious. High on flavor. Our only disappointment was that the wine recommendations were mediocre. We tried two but were not impressed. And, it's usually not that hard to please our palettes!"

  • "My partner and I went to Il Palio to celebrate a birthday, and we will definitely be returning for future events. Every aspect of the experience was exactly what we had hoped for--delicious food, a romantic atmosphere, and service that was attentive but never hovering. Unlike anything else we have found in this area..."

  • "So the new chef at Il Palio started on Jan 2nd and he is by far the best chef Il Palio has ever had...and yes, I have been dining here on a regular basis since it opened more than 25 years ago and yes I can make this statement after just 4 weeks of dining at the Il Palio as I have had brunch, lunch and dinner during the past 4 weeks on a regular basis at the restaurant so I speak from experience. Lunch is by far the best bargain in the Triangle and I hope they keep offering the fixed price special. I mean, come on! What a bargain! 3 courses for $28 and a glass of wine! You can't beat that! Ordered the Pacchero as my entree and marveled at his pasta making talent. Stupendous! Can't wait to go again next week for lunch!"

  • "You can't go wrong with brunch at Il Palio. I had the Truffle Scramble Eggs and a bottle of Champagne so you know I was in a good mood! What a great way to spend a Sunday! The food here with the new chef is better than it's ever been! I will definitely be back..and more than likely it will be every single week! It's that good!!!"

  • "I have been to a lot of places over the years, and the food and service I've received at the Palio is without question the VERY best that I've experienced at any price! The whole staff will treat you as if you were royalty. And they are the best service team I've ever experienced . You will swear that they put together a special plan, just for YOUR visit. In the bar area after dinner, you and your partner can also listen to live piano over a glass of fine wine. Richard Tazewell will play you old standards in a style that is absolutely captivating as it is mesmerizing ."

  • "Waiters were great and food was fantastic as was the ambience. We probably just got unlucky but apparently their entire computer system crashed mid dinner so we were not waited on for 30 minutes while they had to reboot their computer which was very annoying but probably not their fault."

  • "I took my wife here for her 40th and 41st birthdays. For the 40th, we had a group of 8 people and for the 41st it was just us. Both times the service and food were exquisite. Food presentation and flavor were top notch. The wine list is very good and the head waiters are very good at selecting pairings. They also pay attention to detail: I made a small comment about the birthday dinner when making reservations, and the entire staff wished my wife a happy birthday. They were also kind enough to "comp" our champagne and desserts. All in all, a fantastic experience and we will definitely be back!"

  • "A friend and I have been trying forever to get to Il Palio to have the Butternut Squash Ravioli. We finally made it today, and it was very good, not sure if it was as good as it was when I had it many years ago, but it was still worth the trip. We also, had the Arugula Salad, which was delicious as well. There was a group there, but my friend and I were the first to arrive in the dining area, so it was very quiet. But, I definitely enjoyed it, and would go back again for the Butternut Squash Ravioli."

  • "I've been going to Il Palio and staying at The Siena for many years through several chef changes and now hotel ownership change (to Marriott's "Autograph Collection"). Was here for New Years Eve. Excellent service, particularly good run of sommeliers current young man included, and a fine fixed menu for the holiday - all good to very good. Next morning breakfast (included) also very nicely done. This is a surprisingly kid friendly spot from a service perspective and accommodating kitchen--- not for running-around kids, but very accommodating for kids able to make it through a formal dinner. Would highly recommend staying at the hotel in conjunction with a special occasion dinner."

  • "Table for 2 on NYE. Service was exceptional, but I left feeling very unimpressed overall. We were seated in an awkward corner with a folding screen separating us from the host station. Pleasant live piano music accompanied dinner. The 5 course meal ranged from OK to excellent with each course. Chick pea pesto, salads, caprese, various ravioli, and chocolate ganache for dessert stood out. The other courses, which included beef carpaccio, venison, and pork, were obviously fresh and nicely presented, but the flavor and imagination were lacking, if considering the GIANT price tag. Other prix fixe options in the area deliver more creative & complex dishes for less $ (with better ambience on NYE IMO), even if the service isn't as good as Il Palio"

  • "IL Palio was an awesome dining experience. The scallops were cooked perfect and so was the hangar steak. Excellent bartender and wonderful drinks. We will absolutley be back. Brunch the next morning was also a hit."

  • "We had heard great things about Il Palio in years past and finally made it there and we were underwhelmed. The service was just ok - not polished. The food was also just ok - not bad but not amazing. Breakfast the following morning was just plain ridiculous. Service was impossibly slow. We waited more than 20min for a poorly cut grapefruit. Then, two min after finally getting grapefruit, the hot food arrived. We asked them to hold it since we just got our grapefruit, and then we couldn't find anyone to bring our hot food back out once we were ready. At that point, everything was cold."

  • "Generally the food here is top notch though pricey. My pasta was too salty and when I mentioned this, they sent me a dessert. Wine is expensive but a good list. Nice piano music in bar, great ambiance."

  • "Overall, we had a very good experience dining here. I will say that when we sat, we had to wait for the waiter to come bring us menus/drink list. We just sat there a few minutes without one. Also, he did not ask right then if we cared for something to drink and walked off before I could say "I would love to have a martini". So, it was about 10minutes later that I flagged him down to order a drink.....and by then, we were almost ready to order our food as well, but waited. I feel like a drink order should happen when you are seated or at least the first time the waiter approaches. This waiter was all about "taking our time", which is great unless you are hungry ..or ready for a cocktail! The food was wonderful though!!"

  • "Il Palio was a lovely place to spend Christmas. Beautiful music, ambience, great service, good food. My husband's prawns had a strong flavor and odor, and though he enjoyed them, he wouldn't order them again. My filet was buttery and delicious. Desserts were elegant and tasty. Price was reasonable and we didn't feel hurried and were well attended."

  • "We had never heard anything about Il Palio, but were looking for a fine dining experience for Christmas Eve. We took a chance, and are delighted to say we've found our new favorite "special occasion" restaurant. While the bill is steep, it's well worth it. Il Palio is the kind of place that can take a food you generally don't like (for my wife, it was tomatoes), and make t hem so delicious, that it's your favorite part of the entire meal. If Michelin rated restaurants in North Carolina, I guarantee this would be one of the top three or four restaurants in the triangle area."

  • "Food was very tasty, though, for the price, a bit less creative than I might have liked. Extra treats - like asparagus appetizer and truffles - were definitely appreciated! Servers were very attentive and pace was relaxed (for better and for worse - it made for a good date night, but at the same time was a little stressful since it was the first time leaving our youngest with a babysitter). Overall, a nice treat restaurant!"

  • "We have been at the restaurant before and always thought that the food and service was excellent. We were very disappointed this time. The food was quite ordinary and all the dishes appeared off. In addition, the kitchen was out of bolognese pasta which is quite surprising since this is a popular dish. Perhaps the restaurant has a new staff but work is needed."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience from beginning to end. The ambience was perfect, the service was exceptional and the food was amazing! We loved the fact that there were rare finds on the menu (pork belly appetizer for example)! The wine list is extensive and the staff knowledgeable to assist you in your choice(s). We left feeling very satisfied-both our stomachs and our souls! We will definitely return! Anthony Carey and his entire staff are fully committed to ensuring your satisfaction!!"

  • "From the moment we stepped on the property, we had the feeling of being back in Europe. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and full of good suggestions...from the single malt scotch to the Foie Gras! We learned where a "Hanger Steak" sits on the cow. This and the Almond Crusted NC Snapper were delicious. We ended our celebratory evening with the Rustic Apple Tartellete and a Chocolate Ganache....both fabulous. Yes, we will return!"

  • "Yes, uneventful, but that is everything that a meal should be. The service was attentive, but not invasive. We were a party of three and we each had a different selection for each of four courses and each dish was prepared per our requests and presented beautifully. The meal was leisurely paced but not ever slow. The presentation both in taste and in appearance showed attention to detail. No other reataurant in the area comes close to the quality and service."
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "Many of the appetizers and main courses our large party was served were exceptional, particularly the beet salad and the hearty bolognese over thick ribbons of fresh pasta. But the uneven and inattentive service was not worthy of a 20% gratuity that was automatically tacked onto my total without my consent or knowledge. Although we were a party of nine, several were teenagers who ordered simple items such as buttered pasta. The staff seem quite challenged despite the fact there were only a few other diners in the restaurant. I was relieved we were not dining on a "busy" night."

  • "I booked a reservation for two at Il Palio for a romantic date night for my girlfriend and I. We'd both been dying to go, having passed it over and over again on the commute back and forth between Duke and UNC, and had high expectations - every one of which was met. The wait staff were absolutely perfect and practiced, they came around at exactly the right times, kept everything refilled and made sure everything was to our liking, but never once interrupted our conversation. The food was even more perfect - I've made it a goal to try out some of the nicer restaurants in the Triangle area, and of those I've visited so far, the food was the best at Il Palio. It's a pricey restaurant (on the order of the WaDuke) but worth every penny."
