A word from Il Fornaio - Coronado
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The night-time view from our table of the downtown San Diego skyline is breath-taking ! The view is across the bay towards downtown and it resembles a travel brochure. The special fish dishes from the special Venice menu were terrific. The petrele sole main course was delicate, served in a light cream sauce and excellent. It is served with risotto, typical of Venice and surprisingly quite filling. Portions are good and are not the midget sized that so many top restaurants are serving these days. The service was prompt but not pushy. They have a good italian wine list featuring Barolos and Barbescas which usually are only available in Europe. All-in-all this is a top restaurant in all aspects."

  • "My family went here for my husband's birthday expecting a really nice experience. We sat down for dinner around 4pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was not busy. We had a waiter approach us that stated, "Are you ready?" There was no introduction, no hello, and no welcome to the restaurant. By this time we were turned off. We felt like we were an inconvenience to the waiter. There needs to be additional training to the wait staff. The food was ok, not what I expected for the price of the entrees."

  • "Excellent restaurant serving fine food and stellar service. The view of the Bay is great and we were not rushed in the least, resulting in a very pleasant dining experience."

  • "The location is perfect! The food was great. We enjoyed our table overlooking the bay. The fireworks that were across the bay (completely unexpected) made the night perfect!!"

  • "Menu was limited and appeared different from menu shown online -- disappointing. Wait staff was attentive but rushed us through our meal."

  • "I tried also "Il Fornaio" in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but this remains the best, also for the location,"

  • "Our dinner was delicious from the calimari starter, through salads and pastas to the desserts! Our waiter Johnny was outstanding, assisting our menu selections and great with the children. Thank you for a memorable evening!"

  • "Great place to see the views of San Diego and the harbor. We had a fantastic view of the US Navy Ship the Midway as well. It was at night and the lights were great. Food is good and great wine selections.."

  • "Our friends recommend this restaurant to us when visiting Coronado. So glad they did. We arrived early for our reservation and they took us right in. Since it was during the week and an early dinner we had our choice of outside tables. The best view in the house. If making a reservation any time of year you must sit outside. They have a fire place and heaters. It's a beautiful restaurant and pleasant romantic atmosphere on the water. Definitely will be back and will tell friends."

  • "We drove 1300 miles from texas to San Diego and were very tired, looking forward to an easy on the eyes dinner. Delicious Bellinni Prosecco was a great start, and superlative lamb chops and scallopini.....dare I mention the dessert? We will come back and back and back, if our budget permits."

  • "Me and my boyfriend had dinner at Il Fornaio Coronado for our 2 year anniversary. Great restaurant....if you are sitting outside or near a window. We were seated at a booth a row away from the windows and I could still see..kind of, but it was awkward having to almost stare at the people who were sitting in the window seats to look outside. My boyfriend is Italian so maybe he and I are a bit biased but to us it was just eh italian food. It took forever for a waiter to come and take our dinner order. He (the waiter) did take the initiative to apologize for that before we left."

  • "This restaurant is excellent. The ambiance is nice. The views are amazing. The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. I recommend the lasagna or the spaghetti bolognese. The spaghetti is not on the menu but if you order it they will make it. It's all about the sauce!"

  • "My husband and I went there for our wedding anniversary this year, and we had a great time and food! Pricing is reasonable, too, in our opinion. My husband is not a big fan of Italian food, and he had seared ahi tuna, and he LOVED the food. I was the one who pushed to choose this restaurant, but after lunch, he kept telling me that he would love to go back there again sometime:)"

  • "This is our 3rd time at Il Fornaio. we stumbled upon the restaurant 2 years ago when we decided to visit Coronado Island while staying at the Hyatt across the bay for our 26th anniversary. We loved the food, environment, service we decided to bring our family (extended as well) when our daughter graduated from USD. We will recommend this restaurant to all our friends. Its a short hour drive from Murrieta and it was a great place to spend our 28th Anniversary for dinner as well. Thank you, Carl and Barbara Murillo"

  • "I spend enough time at fast food restaurants that my perspective may be skewed, but Il Fornaio is the first place I think of when I have a special occasion. The atmosphere is great, day or night. Their menu covers a wide range of authentic Italian favorites...and afew surprises. All done with the style and sensibilitiy that make it a cut above any other Italian retaurants I know. [The best way I can describe the Il Fornaio difference, is like the difference between restaurant tamales and the tamales that your Mexican friend's mom makes. Mexican mom wins hands down...there is something authentic that everyone else misses. Il Fornaio gets it right.]"

  • "We were celebrating our nephew's graduation. There were ten in our party, spanning three generations. Everyone was impressed by the food -- there were Sicilian specials in addition to the main menu. Our server -- Heidi S. -- was great."

  • "We visited on Father's Day for brunch, but we were actually celebrating my Mother in Laws birthday who was visiting from out of state. The view was fantastic, but the food was disappointing!! My food was cold and my husbands dish was very bland. I ordered eggs benedict, which could have potentially been okay (not great) if it was at least warm. My husband ordered a shrimp and avocado omelet, which had little to no flavor. The restaurant was very busy, perhaps this is why our dishes were such a disappointment. The view and ambience were great and for that reason I may give this place another chance - I just wasn't impressed the food and I really really wanted to be!"

  • "Food was good, but nothing special. Service was lacking. I think our waiter was new, but we had to ask for things multiple times. Finally, another waiter and a busboy had to step in to make things right. It was a disappointing Father's Day lunch."

  • "Il Fornaio is a family favorite because of the location right on the water with a view of downtown. The prices are very reasonable and the food is quality."

  • "We've always enjoyed lunch and dinner at Il Fornaio. This past Saturday evening, dinner celebrating our wedding anniversary, was no exception. The food is wonderful. Pasta is always perfectly al dente. Sauces are delightfully tasty. We saw the executive chef in the dining room several times leaving no doubt about his total commitment to complete excellence in the dining experience. There were seveal large parties that made the dining room louder than normal. Service was very good, but slightly less than we've experieced before. I think that was a function of the individual server who was not as superb as the level of professional European style service we've become accustomed to at Il Fornaio. Overall, we highy recommend Il Fornaio."

  • "We have been dining at the Coronado Il Fornaio for many years and the food has been excellent until this visit where we encountered mediocre food and some mediocre service. The waiter was good, but the support staff was poor and the bartender, terrible. For example, we ordered limoncello and it was served warm and the bartender argued that he kept it in the fridge. Apparently not the bottle from which ours came from. The bread was great but was served late and after all tables around us which had arrived after us, had been served. It used to be good, but it has gone downhill. May not go back."

  • "We were celebrating a graduation with a large family party. Our waiter had to be reminded several times of items we asked for. He never apologized for his lack of attention. He paid a lot of attention to a couple sitting near our table, but did not give us the attention we were paying for. We waited too long between courses, and had to ask another waiter to find our waiter to finally clear our table. After waiting 20 minutes for our coffee to be delivered, we finally cancelled it. Very, very bad service. We do not recommend this restaurant for large parties."

  • "Wanted just to say that this whole dining experience in this restaurant was wonderful. From the moment we walked in, the restaurant is beautiful, very friendly employees. The ambiance is just beautiful and you feel like the servers really do care about their people."

  • "One of the better so-called chain restaurants in San Diego. Outstanding views and a menu to satisfy almost everyone. The three course special is a steal at $32. Downsides were that it took forever to order a second round of cocktails, as our server disappeared at times. Also, no special service despite mentioning it was my parents' wedding anniversary. Overall, a B."

  • "Il Fornaio is consistently good. Their rotating regional special menus keep things fresh. On Coronado Island, you get the same great food and a wonderful view of San Diego. Lots to like!"

  • "My free range chicken was very moist and tasty but the spinach left a lot to be desired...even a dash of salt. Anything served should be a delight to eat. Potatoes were good. Food was good...I'd go back, but I really chose this restaurant for the location and views!"

  • "Went for lunch for my daughters graduation. The service was very slow, the food nothing special. Not flexible on making some changes on the menu, for example I wanted a pasta with seafood but came with red sauce and I asked for it to have white sauce instead and they were unable to make that request. The calamari was hard and cold. Since I couldn't get the pasta I order a plate of seafood with spinach and the greens were dripping in olive oil, not good. I don't think I will return to this restaurant. The only good thing was the view and we saw two aircraft carriers pass by, that was nice for the kids. Not a memorable dinning experience."
