Diner Reviews
  • "This was our second seating during our two trips to Sanibl Island. Truly....the very best dining experience on the island. We will be back!"

  • "If in Sanibel and if it is okay to not have a sunset and beach view during dinner you would like to have a very nice exceptionally well prepared and presented meal, do not miss Il Cielo. We dined on small plates, individual salads and dessert. Salad of the house has a garnish of sliced Asian pears, feta and almonds. My spouse and I shared three small plates. Il Cielo presented wonderful fish tacos, seared Ahi tuna and a crab cake with beautiful and appropriate garnish. Dessert was a unique key lime pie with a raspberry twist for a perfect ending to our meal. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable which we appreciated. We recommend trying this lovely restaurant as we think it is one of the best in Sanibel."

  • "The food and service were spectacular. I had the fish special, which was a tile fish fillet, wonderfully prepared with a unique blend of vegetables that complimented it perfectly. My wife and seven year old daughter each had a filet mignon that was equally well prepared. For once a kid's menu with some quality choices that are simply smaller proportions! The caprese salad with yellow heirloom tomatoes was one of the best I've ever had. And the key lime pie was also one of the best we've ever had. The wine list was not as extensive as it could be, but at least they had the Honig cab, which is one of my personal favorites. Nice background piano music as well. We will definitely come back."

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Our wait person was knowledgeable, the food delicious and fresh, and the atmosphere pleasant. We'll be back again."

  • "The apps and meal were very good. We had a nice bottle of Malbec, which was priced well. The app and entry came a little close yo each other, but other that that everything was very nice. The atmosphere is a little more polished than most Sanibel restaurants."

  • "There are a lot of restaurants on Sanibel. But only a few that are great. In the category of high end, gourmet... this is the one. We had salads, lobster ravioli, potato leek soup, and steak. All were carefully prepared& delicious."

  • "Nice option to get away from all the fried food that is so common in the area."

  • "Staff was well trained and very accommodating. When we asked about availability of a wine we enjoyed on both of our visits , the host/manager went to the trouble of calling his wine rep to try to find a source, sorry that that it was available only to restaurants. He did his best to help! Look forward to future visits."

  • "We've been driving by Il Cielo for two years on our way to Bowman's Beach and finally made a reservation. We should not have waited! The food was superb, the ambiance was fantastic and Walter (our server) was exceptional! Everything from the tomato basil soup to the Osso Bucco was prepared perfectly. Other notable dishes at our table were the Asian Seared Tuna and Seared Day Boat Scallops. Our group of 6 were seated immediately with reservations and our food was out timely. We will definitely return!"

  • "Excellent dining in first-class surroundings. Service was great."

  • "My wife, daughter and I just visited Il Cielo for dinner while on a brief mini vacation in Sanibel. The food was fantastic, the service impeccable and the ambiance perfect. The roasted sweet potato soup with blue crab cake was spectacular and the deserts are prepared on site by a pastry chef, not oursourced like some other restaurants. Chef Neil came out to our table and spent some time chatting with us. Not only is gifted from a culinary standpoint, he's also just a great, down to earth guy who loves what he does. If you plan on going to Sanibel, Il Cielo is definitely worth visiting."

  • "We had a party of eight! The restaurant was perfect! Lorrain our server was outstanding. We ordered a diverse selection of apps and entrees and there wasn't an item that wasn't loved. I enjoyed the escargot and the Pan roasted fish with blue crab! Outstanding!"

  • "The 3 course early bird special with wine was excellent. Crabcake appetizer was a wonderful prelude to a delightful fillet."

  • "The best overall meal in Sanibel, in the last couple of years. My wife said that the veal was a good as she has ever had. We had a delicious lobster ravioli that was outstanding, perfect for a appetizer, a bit on the rich for main course. I had the filet minion that was great cooked perfect, and the potatoes and vegetables were all wonderful. TOTALLY a wonderful evening that is priced fairly for the quality of food."

  • "Good food and lovely atmosphere. Staff were great and very accommodating when we arrived early. Exceptional service. Had the fish tacos - delicious. Also had 2 salads that were fantastic. Had a nice conversation with the table next to us but that was because they were so interesting and from Captiva - they felt this was one of the best on the Islands and I agree. We dressed up a little but some folks were casual as well. All in all, loved it."

  • "Il Cielo - our best meal out in Sanibel - great ambience and friendly, knowledgeable staff combined with superb fish and seafood. portion size just right and seasoning spot on. well constructed dishes supported by excellent wine list . ..... the piano player was not intrusive and the tables gave enough space for privacy rather than crowding - wish more restaurants were like Il Cielo"

  • "Our group of 6 made a reservation for Il Cielo on Friday night, high season, on Sanibel. We had seen some great reviews, some concerning reviews, but gave this restaurant a chance. We were so glad we did! Service was excellent. Despite reviews suggesting hospitality could be less than hospitable, we found the front of house staff as charming and accommodating as possible. Our waiter was a gem!. Above all else the elegant interior and live pianist (perfect!) set the mood for a wonderful evening. The cocktail list was innovative and fun. Most of all the food was perfect. Fresh seafood, perfectly prepared. Desserts were also suburb. We will certainly return on our next trip!"

  • "When we arrived we asked if we could be seated outside and that was no problem. Our server,Chris, could not have been nicer. He gave excellent suggestions regarding the menu which helped us make good choices even down to dessert the chocolate bombe looked Delicious but we were both comfortably full.We asked if we could get it to go and Chris said "of course" so we got to enjoy it an hour or so later. We are returning for sure!"

  • "My Food was delicious and a great value for the prix fixe menu. I had lobster ravioli, wedding soup, and a fettuccine shrimp appetizer. My husband loves his salad but his grouper entree was mediocre."

  • "Il Cielo continues to be our go to restaurant for special occasions. Our son and his fiancé visited last week and we took them to Il Cielo for their final evening with us. The food, the service and the atmosphere were terrific. The mussels on the starter menu are the best I have had in along time and the slow cooked spiced lamb rib starter was fantastic. We all had something different from the main menu - the salmon, lamb chops, grouper and veal scallopini - and all were highly enjoyable. Overall, Il Cielo is definitely our favorite spot on Sanibel and we will be back."

  • "I ordered the grouper and my husband the seared tuna which were both mouthwatering delicious with succulant spices done to perfection. The ambiance was very romantic. The menu had a nice variety of dishes, all $25-$30. There could have been more dinner type appetizers- more like lite fare dinners. My husband got the burger sliders with fries for appetizer and they were really tasty! I would recommend this to anyone who wants a special dinner."

  • "We were disappointed in the food this year after a great meal last year."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "My wife and I took advantage of the prix-fixe early bird special (pre-5:45 pm), which offers a 3 course meal plus wine. Every course was delicious, and the wine was very good. Very reasonable price for a high quality romantic dinner."

  • "Everything was good, but the food came much too fast. We barely had our drinks when the first course arrived and we'd barely finished that when the main course arrived. Part of the problem, it seems, is that Sanibel Island is not a place for the young, hip singled who might eat late. The tone is staid, the people are old and the place is not hopping. Now we know. Still, one restaurant could buck the trend."

  • "We enjoyed our meal but found things a little pricy. The restaurant was not crowded but we were placed in a corner by the service table. It was like being put in front of the kitchen door. Our waiter tried to slow down the rush to get table water by moving the pitcher but to no avail. The manager told us that many liked the spot as it was secluded. Hard to be secluded with all the waiter traffic. The manager seemed indignant about our complaint. We should have been moved as there were many available tables."

  • "Very upscale, great food, and service but dress is resort casual. A bit pricey. Veal chop cooked to perfection as was the chicken but each had a bit too much pepper. The 3-way potato combination (mash, sweet, and fingerling) was delightful. Wine list either by bottle or glass is very good. You may want to ask the price of the specials before ordering though. They are definitely at the high end."

  • "The food was amazing and we would definitely visit again."

  • "The four courses were prepared perfectly and each looked beautiful. The blackened tuna served with bok choy and pappardelle pasta had an intriguing light Asian sauce. We rarely order dessert but last night we could not resist the dark chocolate espresso/chocolate mousse bombe. It was the Bomb. A very talented young pianist was serenading us with great song choices."

  • "Tom, our waiter, could not have been more attentive and delightful. The food was fabulous. We took advantage of the price fixe meal and it was wonderful and plenty of food. The lobster ravioli and the lamb ribs were delicious appetizers. The salad had such wonderful flavor. The filet and the salmon entrees we generous and prepared perfectly. Don't miss the chocolate bombe for dessert. We will definitely be going back. Our favorite restaurant on the island."

  • "Slightly higher priced than some other Sanibel restaurants but worth it. Good food with generous portions. We were getting tired of choosing what type of fried food to have for dinner. The Tile Fish special was outstanding. Our only (slight) dissapointment was that all but one of the deserts contain cream...lactose issues."

  • "There is a comfortable elegance about Il Cielo in Sanibel. The employees were friendly and gracious and the service was impeccable. There was a wide variety of offerings on the menu - it was hard to choose what to order. I had the lamb rack and quite frankly, it was the best I've ever eaten. Prices are reasonable for a lovely and delicious dinner. My experience is not unique as you need to make reservations in advance and it is often booked well ahead."

  • "We wanted to have a special fine dining experience during our Sanibel/Captiva vacation and Il Cielo delivered! Truly enjoyed everything about it - the ambiance was comfortable yet sophisticated, the food was creative and delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. Being lactose intolerant, they willingly modified an entree to meet my dietary needs, which we appreciated. It was a fun way to wrap-up our vacation!"

  • "Beautifully decorated, elegantly presented, good variety on menu, care was taken to insure we had a memorable meal and an excellent time. Piano music perfectly performed by Scott McDonald. Il Cielo is an ideal destination for a special meal with special friends."

  • "The exterior and approach is great... Gas lamps, beautiful deck, giant wooden doors.. feels chic and exclusive but then you open them to what feels like a Bar Mitzvah. Bad lighting, linen table settings, carpet and a piano player.. The fish tacos app was 14 and small and had no flavor. The lobster ravioli was delish. My son had waygu beef sliders which were dry and gamey.. The crab cake app was one crab cake and some slaw. The local black grouper with asparagus and crab was delicious.. I think its great that this is the only place trying to use fresh organic products and give gluten free options but for the type of upscale pricey dining they are going for it just doesn't seem to fit. Plus There was only one local fish on the menu."

  • "As locals we have eaten at Il Cielo many times. Food and service are always outstanding. In addition to great food and service, we enjoy the quieter ambiance so we can catch up with friends without any shouting across the table like most other Sanibel restaurants. I would recommend Il Cielo without any hesitation."

  • "Three of the six of us ordered the veal dish with shrimp. The veal was tasteless and looked like it came frozen in a box. All three of us felt the same way. The lobster raviolis ap was great, should have ordered two of those and called it a day. A nice restaurant, great service, shame the food was so bad."
