Diner Reviews
  • "Unfortunately we were quite disappointed with both the service and food. After arriving and being sat it took over twenty minutes and my husband going to the hostess to finally get waters. I would not recommend eating here. The quality of food and the way it was cooked was even more disappointing than the service."

  • "Looking for a late night dinner with a large group of friends? This is it! A group of 15, all fashionably late of course, showed up 30 minutes before the kitchen closed, and the staff was nothing less of amazing! Our orders were perfect, the birthday dessert was incredible, the ambience of the place was soothing, the entire night was a perfection!"

  • "Had the restaurant week specials and they were delicious! 4 course meal for $23 was excellent value with plenty of food. Salmon was very good and my mom raved about the steak!!"

  • "I've dined in the restaurant many times in the past and been very happy. My husband was satisfied with his burger. The server was very friendly but she never told us the dinner specials. We had to over hear them being told to a table behind us. The best part of my dinner was the au gratin potatoes. There were delicious. I ordered the Black and Blue rib eye. Salad would have been good except the lettuce was old and brown. I ordered my steak medium rare. It came out medium. The seasoning was ok. There was no blue cheese on it. The quality of meat was also a disappointment. I question that it was even a ribeye."

  • "The service was excellant our waitress was extremely polite and courtious she checked on us several times during our meal, but it was not overly intrusive ....My wife and I had a wonderful time and we will be back...It was her birthday and she loved it..."

  • "We had a fine meal at the Hunter Steakhouse on Valentine's Day. We were a family of five, visiting San Diego for the President's Day weekend. While the service was good, it was a tad slow. Though I know it was because of the day we went. The restaurant was crowded, so I understand. I'm sure it will be faster on a "regular" evening. That being said, when our food (appetizers/soups/entrees) were brought out, they were very good. The Shrimp Cocktail was cold and fresh with six HUGE shrimp and the cocktail sauce had just the right amount of tang. Our soups were nice and hot. Our entrees were served hot on the plate. I had the Prime Rib and King Crab, which was served perfectly. We all enjoyed our dinner."

  • "This was our (my wife and I) first visit to Hunter steakhouse. It did not start off well. First, my reservation request for a booth was not taken seriously. The hostess told me me that my request for a booth "if possible" was regarded as "not important," so I didn't get a booth. Second, the alternative seating I was offered were all poor tables (next to kitchen etc.). Finally my wife pointed at an empty table in a corner and after some grumbling we were seated there. Regarding the food, the portions were generous, and the Tableside Salad Bar was a nice touch, but my steak was not very tender, and my baked potato was barely warm. So, for an overall grade I'd give the Hunter Steakhouse a "C." --It will be a while before we return."

  • "Enjoyed the food and the service. Very Friendly atmosphere. Intimate dining."

  • "Ok, only thing I really enjoyed was the blue cheese dressing and our servers great attitude. Other than that bread was dry and cold, butter wasn't good, ribs were over cooked and dry and the prime rib wasn't A-grade."

  • "What a lovely evening my boyfriend and I had at Hunter Steakhouse! We came here for dinner to celebrate our 3 year anniversary and were so happy with our choice. The food was amazing, generous portions, with great wine to complement the food. Absolutely recommend this place for any occasion. Oh and not to mention the pricing is fantastic, especially compared to other steakhouses with the same high quality food and service."

  • "I enjoyed my dining experience. Had the prime rib and it was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Also enjoyed the table side salad. What I did not like was the carrot cake. It was very dry so did not eat it"

  • "The prime rib here is awesome. We love prime rib and many spots say they "feature" it. Hunter does. Any time we are in the mood for prime rib, Hunter is out destination."

  • "To begin with, what a service: amiable, fast and top notch. Secondly, the food was wonderful. We had the sirloin and the filet mignon and it was outstanding. And the the dessert, a wonderful taste."

  • "We returned to Hungry Hunter because of prior good experiences. Our only adverse comment is that the Caesar Salad dressing was extremely tart. My prime rib was slightly sub-par. That said, we will return."

  • "My girlfriend and I went for restaurant week to Hunters. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. We arrived about 45 minutes early and had some drinks in the bar. The bartender was great, very knowledgeable and a fun guy to shoot the breeze with. The food was excellent and the service was superb. The atmosphere reminded me of a 70's hunting lodge and it was fun to look at all the knick knacks on the wall. I would recommend this eatery to anyone looking to have a fun, interesting, reasonably priced meal out with a group or significant other."

  • "The sirloin and prime rib were amazing. The prime rib was so tender that you could cut it with a knife. The desert options we were given were not that good. The carrot cake was very dense and tasted more like gingerbread then carrot cake."

  • "My wife and I chose Hunters for our 40th anniversary dinner because we have had great meals there in the past. I especially like their steaks and the sauces that they offer, especially the peppercorn sauce."

  • "Our food was very good, it was a comfortable place to talk, there was a group nearby of at least 8. The rooms and tables allow them to arrange seating for two or put tables together for a group. Just a comfortable place with excellent prime rib. well cooked vegetables. We've been before and will probably go back."

  • "We dined here on our first night in San Diego, we had to call up and reschedule our reservation for an hour later due to flight getting in later than expected, but there was no problem, busy place but shown straight to table, steaks were excellent and our waiter was very friendly and made sure we were topped up with drinks and everything was ok, would recommend Hunters!"

  • "We come every year for a good meal at Christmas eve, and this year it was a little too dark in our corner. Some lights were out, and it took a while to get second drinks and clear the first bottle."

  • "We went there on New Years Eve. There was a pre-fix menu and the regular menu. The food was good. I was here 20 years ago. The decor needs updating. The acoustic ceiling has to go. The room I sat in was like sitting in a conference room at a Best Western with tables. The waitress and staff were very friendly and accomodating. The food prices were reasonable. I had the pepercorn Filet Mignon, my lady friends son had the BBQ baby back ribs. They were fall of the bone tender."

  • "My Husband and I have been eating here for as long as we have been married and beyond 17 yrs. We have tried many places and have yet to find a prime rib that even comes close to second best, it's just not out there!"

  • "Overall, this was a great dining experience. My boyfriend and I made reservations the morning of Christmas Eve. Even though we arrived a few minutes late, the hosts were friendly and quickly got us seated. All of the staff was extremely friendly. The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting - it invited me of a New England restaurant with the dark paint and stone fireplace. Our drinks did take quite a while to come, but that was really the only issue. The food was amazing and our server was very nice. Overall, it was a really nice dinner."

  • "In the past was pretty good however the latest was only fair .Food was somewhat bland. Salad was good . stuffed mushrooms were very bland.. Baked potato was good. Stuffed steak was bland.. Service was very good .. Took my daughter out for a Christmas dinner and was disappointed in the quality of the food."

  • "I haven't been to Hunter's in a few years and, I can say that it sure has changed. The atmosphere seems way too casual now. Used to be that people actually dressed decently but now, it's just jeans, ball caps, flip flops, etc. Also, the prime rib just wasn't as flavorful as in the past. The medium-rare was more like medium. The margaritas were good. Brought my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner but, it was just too casual...and, we dressed nice."

  • "Lived in SD for over 30 years, first time here. Decided to go here before a concert at the sports arena. The atmosphere is good for a steakhouse, paneled walls, and a cozy feel. The wait staff was very good. The peppercorn sirloin was excellent. My wife had a 3 course meal including Prime Rib which she enjoyed. Overall, a great meal at a decent price, and a nice atmosphere. Will return before the next 30 years is up...."

  • "Made a reservation for 7pm dinner on a Friday night, didn't even need it. I ordered the prime rib and the wife ordered a steak. The food came out quick. It was all cooked perfectly but after a couple of bites, we both agreed that there was no flavor to it. Even the sides were plan. Not going back unless I bring my own seasoning!"

  • "The server was good tho not knowlageable about meat cuts. No big. I found it tacky they added $1 charge because my brother ordered soup instead of salad before his entrée. The server said she mentioned it, Anyway,The soup was mostly potato, not clam."

  • "We ate in the downstairs bar which had the final world series game on the TVs, but the sound down low enough to have conversation. Boston Red Sox became the World Champions at home in Fenway, an historic game. Prime rib was a hit, nice horse radish sauce as well as a good horse radish for some zing. The crab legs at 1 1/2 pounds were also excellent, several sauces available as well as drawn butter...that is a lot of crab and a great price. Chicken was a huge portion and made lunch the next day as well. Been going here through the name changes since 1974, its not Ruth Chris, but no one wants or expects to pay their exorbitant prices in my family. Prefer this location to any of the other local steakhouses with ...angus, ...back in their name."

  • "We were very pleased with the prime rib that was cooked to perfection - medium rare. Our server was very attentive, and the food was served in a timely manner. I tried the table side salad bar which good for variety; my husband had the Caesar which was very good. We took the cheese cake to go, and wished I had another slice though I am sure I would have regretted that when I got on the scale."

  • "I enjoyed the food at Hunters very much. I made reservations for a particular time. I was a bit early, about 5 minutes and was told we had to wait till it was closer to the time. Everyone in the party was there. I figured they were busy, but turned out not true. We did not get taken to our table till 10 minutes past our reservation time, so we waited 15 minutes. We were taken to an upstairs area for the dinning which was empty. Once seated, we waited around 15 before anyone acknowledged us a being there. During dining we had to find our server to order more drinks. I enjoyed the food and this was a bit of a special dinner, but I feel that the service should of been better then what it was."

  • "My fiancé and I dined here for restaurant week. We thought the food was good - the meat had a good flavor and all the sides tasted good. The service was outstanding. The décor is in need of many updates - the restaurant has a funky smell inside and is also extremely cold. This took away from our dining experience."
