A word from Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House - Chicago
After years of searching far and wide for a location to open the follow-up restaurant to the highly successful Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, owners Hugo Ralli and Steve Lombardo found what they were looking for right under their noses. In February of 1997 they launched the seafood companion to the Chicago legend they had created with Gibsons and named it Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House. The restaurant is dedicated to the same principles as its predecessor, unbelievable portions, value and quality coupled with memorable service. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Despite having to move to a new table because we were seated next to a busy restroom door (when there were at least six open tables in the section), we enjoyed the sea bass and halibut entrees and our waiter and service staff were on point."

  • "Our fav. One of the best burgers around. Sat at the bar with Brant, superb service and great World Cup Soccer"

  • "The food was really good here but I was with girlfriends & you could tell it was more of a business atmosphere. We liked it, everything was really good but we are big foodies & it seemed more fit for the convention group. Steaks, seafood, potatoes. I would like this in a different situation. The crab cakes were really good! I hate to give it this review because the food is really good, but it's not what we were wanting."

  • "Hugo's has a great atmosphere, outside seating if wanted. Menu is fresh and nice options. I appreciate the Gibson's steaks that you can get at Hugo's without the headache of getting a table at Gibson's. Great for dates! Beware, the dessert menu has portions that will feed 6-8 people! I recommend Hugo's highly!"

  • "Hugo's was our only disappointment in a great weekend in Chicago. It took almost 20 minutes to see our waiter, then he forgot several items and finally told us that he had worked all day and did we mind if he billed us out so he could leave. The crab cake was excellent, filet was not cooked medium rare (over cooked)but it was good. If you go, I suggest that you sit outside so if the service is poor then you can people watch."

  • "We arrived for our 9:00 reservation looking forward to our usual great experience. Unfortunately, many of our choices had run out by the time we ordered. (Sweet Potato???) The wedge arrived with no dressing. Our entrees arrived before 2 out of 4 of us had finished our salads, BAD FORM. The giant potato was served on the tiniest plate in the kitchen so it was pretty hard to prepare and then share. All the steaks were overcooked but our waiter insisted "they're perfect". It was almost 10:00 by then and we were too tired to wait for new ones. There are too many fabulous restaurants in Chicago. For the money, Hugo's just dropped off the list."

  • "It is obviously a Chicago landmark type of restaurant. It was delicious. But you'll never get in without reservations. And they pack every square inch with customers. Not for the claustrophobic. But it was absolutely delicious.. And pricey too."

  • "This restaurant is a Chicago gem. We love coming every time we visit the city. The service is superb, food is exquisite and there's an excellent wine list."

  • "Go for the Planked White Fish, Bookbinders soup and sea bass. Everything is good - order the Chocolate Mousse cake IF you have a large party. For small parties, request a table by the front windows - it will be quiet and delightful."

  • "We have been to Hugo's before and it never disappoints. We had friends with us this time who had not been there before. Needless to say, they were quite impressed! Three out of the four took our server's recommendation of the sea bass and each loved it! I chose the tuna, and, it too was magnificent. Oysters Rockefeller and two bottles of Sonoma Cutrer accompanied dinner. Creme Brulee for dessert. Once again, a magnificent evening at Hugo's!"

  • "Nice place on Rush Street. Great service and very good food. Sea Bass preparation was very a very light miso base, lighter than other I have tried and really let the taste of the fish come through. Also had the tuna which was very good. We ate early and the place was pretty quiet but was getting busy by around 7:00 pm. Great Rush street crowd."

  • "Upon arriving we were met with friendly staff and taken to our table right away. (I know!!) Within moments we were greeted by our server, which as you know, isn't always the norm. The wait staff was efficient and friendly. The food was out of this world. I highly recommend the sea bass! As our server said,"It's mind blowing!" It truly was. We were traveling with my son and the staff treated him just as well. In fact, another server even came over to offer him the chef's "secret sauce" for his french fries. Excellent restaurant! Fabulous experience!"

  • "I have lived in the city for a year and wanted to take my parents to a really stand out location in an awesome part of the city and Hugo's fits that mold perfectly! Especially if you have a seafood lover in your group. Highly recommend!"

  • "A wonderful find on our recent trip to Chicago. The food and service were excellent. We ordered drinks and they were immediately brought to our table. We started with some frog legs in garlic butter. Delightful! The crab cakes with the pink mayo were excellent. My husband chose the swordfish on a bed of mashed potatoes, it was the best he has ever had. I highly recommend Hugo's Frog Bar. A fun, energetic place with excellent food."

  • "We went for Fathers Day. We sat in the bar near the windows and enjoyed the people watching and general vibrant energy. We did not find it too loud and the piano music was a nice touch though it came later in the meal for us. The "Gibson's" steak was nicely done and OK as usual but my husband stated that the seasoning itself and cooking style (little char) was a little plain. I was a little disappointed in the $55.00 8 ounce lobster tail as it was a touch overdone. My son loved the king crab legs however, and his girlfriend really liked her hamburger. The strawberry shortcake was big enough to feed four. The service was fine once we got a servers attention."

  • "A co-worker raved about this place so I decided to make reservations for my husband and I for a pre- Fathers Day dinner. We were 15min early but were seated right away. The restaurant was really noisy and really crowded. We were seated at a nice booth but were in arms reach of the tables across from us. The walkway between our table and the other tables was so narrow that guests and servers kept tripping on our table linens which were draping to the floor. I had crab cakes, hubby had steak and crab cakes. The cakes were very good but his steak was boiled, not grilled. Very disappointing for $58. Lobster Mac & cheese was undercooked and tasted like Velveeta. Server was great, wine was great but we would've done better by going to Pappadeuxs."

  • "We had a group of 6, and had a pleasant experience at Hugo's. The staff was courteous, and spot on. Wait staff, buss people, servers-you name it, seemed to move with dedicated purpose and efficiency at Hugo's. With so many options in a city like Chicago, I think it says a lot that even though I do not visit Chicago a lot-I'd still chose Hugo's to go back to. To me, thats the mark of a great place."

  • "We made reservations online the day before & were able to get a table for 6. The service was impeccable! Our food presentation was enough to make us all ooh & Awhhh at its arrival! Whether you have room for dessert or not, you must order at least one to share - trust me, it'll be more than enough 😊."

  • "Bad table by the service door. Rushed through dinner and out the door. Took my plate while I wasn't looking before I was done."

  • "Dinner was fantastic as apps & all four seafood dishes were perfectly prepared. Great atmosphere. Server was on last day of training and still needed some polishing (i.e.. four trips for four drinks to start- probably could have saved a few trip just by asking all questions at once). Either way, I'm not that picky and overall, her mentor checked in several times and he's money. Just a great consistent place to have dinner."

  • "I have been to Hugo's many times. Every yr I take a new group of people here and it is always a big hit. Everything on the menu is excellent! If you like seafood or steak, it's a must visit!!! Our server was awesome as well."

  • "A good restaurant for upscale seafood. A bit noisy. They cram too many tables into corners. Waiters seasoned and good."

  • "The night started out positive when the hostess sat us earlier than our reservation at an outside table. Everything was downhill from there... Our waiter showed up 10 minutes after being seated (I had to request him). The frog legs were excellent, but my fiancé and I ordered a bone in fillet cooked medium and the center was not cooked at all (purple/deep red). The waiter apologized and said he'd have a new one made. Instead he came back out with the same fillet that looked like they had just microwaved it and it was now well done. Once out plates were cleared it took our waiter approx 10 minutes to get us the check. When signing for the check the waiter stood next to empty table next to us until I finished... Would not recommend to anyone."
