A word from Howells & Hood
One of the best restaurants in Chicago, in the heart of the Mag Mile. Nestled at the base of the legendary Tribune Tower, this stunning restaurant is a vibrant addition to one of Chicago’s most beloved and recognizable skyscrapers. Incorporating signature Tribune elements into our design, such as the etched travertine that came over from Italy, Howells & Hood pays homage to John Howells & Raymond Hood, architects of the Neo Gothic landmark. With a unique and refined culinary program, the largest draft beer selection in Chicago, and impressive staff, Howells & Hood is a magnificent compliment to Michigan Avenue.

Please note, we do not accept reservations for our patio tables. We will do our best to accommodate outdoor seating requests upon arrival. We look forward to serving you!

Diner Reviews
  • "Stopped here for dinner on a business trip. Food was awesome. Just had a steak salad but the steak was SUPER tender and flavorful. Salad and dressing were fresh and delicious. Others in party had sandwiches which were equally impressive. Good indoor and outdoor seating. Went mid-week after 8pm and it was hopping. Very impressed. Will definitely stop back in next time I'm in the Chicago area."

  • "Went on a recommendation of a friend. Party of 4. Everyone was underwhelmed with the menu choices. Felt there was a heavy emphasis on pork/pork belly throughout menu -- we all like pork, but didn't necessarily all want to have it for dinner. Service a little slow. For price, thought it was just okay."

  • "Howells & Hood is a solid spot for drinks, appetizers and/or dinner after work as well as a casual and an appealing location for lunch if on or near the Mag Mile. Service was outstanding matched by the number of beers available on tap. Food was solid & enjoyable. Good place too for a date."

  • "The food was only average. It has potential though...the menu I read before hand had some really interesting dishes, but sadly they could not execute them well. The lamb meatballs were on the verge of being cold and everything else did not have much flavor. On a positive note, the bread pudding dessert was very good."

  • "Because our table was right under speakers and people at the adjacent table were yelling and shouting we asked for a nearby empty table - we were told it was reserved which was a lie because one hour later it was still empty....conversation was impossible because of the noise level. Appetizer was not brought...entree order ignored..."

  • "When we were seated we asked for a booth and were told that all of the booths in our section (10?) were taken (reserved) and that they could not accommodate our request due to the expected high volume of diners due to the Final Four. 90 minutes later 4 of the 6 booths that were unoccupied when we were seated still were empty when we paid our bill. For something that could have been a simple customer accommodation, you left a bad impression of your customer service competency in this area. Disappointing......"

  • "Better food and service at lunch. Chopped salad only so-so, Grilled cheese with tomato & pork belly didn't have enough cheese so you could taste it and french fries were tasteless with a weird texture. Bread pudding was drowning in syrup which didn't much taste like butterscotch."

  • "The noise level here is always very loud, and it's hard to hear one's dining companions when they speak. Acoustics should be improved, and the music could be toned down."

  • "I was visiting from New York and wanted someplace to eat that was close to the hotel. This place was perfect. We ordered three shareables and that was enough for dinner. We also had wine and sampled some of the beer. Everything was great and our server was very attentive. It was a bit loud in the open areas, but we sat in a booth and had no problem with the noise."

  • "Overall I was very disappointed with Howells and Hood. My boyfriend and I went for brunch last Sunday and I was far from impressed. I do not recommend the buffet. The food was barely refreshed and the overall taste awful. I will check this place out for lunch or happy hour again but I will not be back for brunch. I was sad because I was looking forward to it."

  • "I have been to Howells & Hood many times as it is one of the best places for happy hour near my office building. I have eaten here a few times and usually the food is great. This time I tried to lake perch bahn mi and it was only okay. It was a little bland. I love their cheese and charcuterie boards, the chicken club sandwich, and their french fries are delicious. I'll be back, but I will not order to bahn mi again."

  • "Enjoyed dinner at H&H with a few colleagues.... what a great restaurant with a pretty funky menu. 147 beers on tap and 1 heck of a variety of scotches. I wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars but struggled to just give the 2 stars I did... Why? Awful service!! Really, really awful service. Amy L, our server, was the most arrogant, disdainful & dismissive server I have ever experienced in Chicago. This lady does a huge disservice to this restaurant.... put a big damper on our fun dinner. Without that server, the review would have been much higher!"

  • "- Waitress came around very often, asking if we wanted more drinks before we even finished what we had. Got pretty aggravating after a while b/c she kept leaving w/o taking our dinner orders. After we got our food, waitress pretty much disappeared - Ordered burger medium, got it WELL DONE. My GF likened her chicken sandwich to a Wendy's meal. Fries were good, but portion size TINY - Friends' sandwiches were incorrect, unimpressive - LOUD. Great atmosphere if you're there for the bar, but it's not as great if you are inside trying to eat. I would recommend for drinks/food at the bar only. Don't go here if you want a nice meal at a table w/ good service. If you want, go when it's nice outside so you can sit on the patio (great location)."

  • "Second time here for my wife and me - this time with two friends. As before, every dish was outstanding (one friend said the best trout he's ever eaten). Also wonderful salmon dish and cassoulet. Great salads. Excellent dessert. Superb beer list. All dishes cooked to perfection, creative without being over the top. Service was top-notch - knowledgeable (even about the beers), friendly, attentive. Portions are generous and prices are typical for the 'hood. I would like to see some attention to noise abatement - having to nearly shout across a booth table to talk during a long dinner is no fun."

  • "We found this place to be disappointing. The restaurant was extremely LOUD but it was also during NCAA games so perhaps it was louder than normal. We had an appetizer, and 4 different entrees and felt that the chef might be trying too hard. We had the spinach artichoke dip which was just okay. The sauteed kale on top was hard to eat and not sure what it added. The pastrami sandwich was fatty and too smokey, the short ribs were just okay. It was very average so not sure we will return."

  • "I was visiting Chicago for the first time ever with my fiancé. We already had a deep dish pizza and wanted to have something different. Too many places seemed like they were way overpriced for the mediocre reviews they had. I came across Howells and Hood and decided to try it out. The shareables were delicious and so was my pulled pork sandwich. The waitress was able to recommend a great local beer to my fiancé, too. Some things were a little overpriced, but we managed to get a bang for our buck. I would love to go back next time we're in Chicago."

  • "I had expected a bit more of a fine dining experience but this was just a very noisy sports bar. The beer list is impressive but the food was mediocre. I wouldn't return except maybe to have a beer after work."

  • "Can't beat the location: amazingly beautiful spectacular Tribune Tower at the river. Noise level was unbelievable. Service was slow due to crowds and probably not enough servers for the crowd. Server was very good and knowledgeable about menu and beverages. Just took too long for bevs and food to appear and noise-level made it seem all that much longer. Will return to this place nonetheless."

  • "Had a group of 8 out of towners. Restaurant was walking distance to the hotel - picked this place because of the reviews and seemed to have something for everyone. Appetizers and entrees were enjoyed by all. The waitress was very attentive, great personality, and was able to make suggestions for scotch, beer, and wine. I had the NY Strip, which was cooked a perfect med-rare. Very enjoyable evening!"

  • "Though the price is on the steep side, the Sunday brunch has great quality and variety -- we were very pleased to have found it. The breakfast menu items are excellent as is the meat and cheese board. Drinks are expensive and there are no "bottomless" specials for Mimosa's or Bloody Marys though, if there were, I'd be ok with paying almost $30 for the brunch portion of the meal. We will dine again here though more for a special occasion as there are more competitively priced establishments in and around the area."

  • "There were 4 of us that came in for lunch and immediately we were struck by the size of the place. It's huge. The bar is one of the longest bars I've seen in Chicago. We were seated right away and the waiter gave us menus. We all ordered something different. 3 of us were satisfied with our choices but one friend ordered the fish & chips and she said the breading was very soggy. She did not eat most of her meal because of that. Overall, the atmosphere is better than the food. The service is great. I would definitely go back for a drink at the bar after work and maybe order appetizers. There is a good chance I'd go back for lunch too."

  • "The server was not very friendly or attentive... everyone at our table sat with empty water glasses for most the of the meal. Three out of five of our dishes came out cold and lacked flavor. The other two dishes were good but not worth returning to the restaurant. The entire restaurant felt as though they didn't care about the patrons. The manager did discount the ticket which was nice from a business stand point... but it was not worth it. There are plenty other great restaurants in the area... so I would recommend to eat somewhere else."

  • "Howells and Hood was a great find. The beer selection was impressive (over 100 on tap) and the food was good food taken up several notches with inventive sauces, fresh accompaniments, and great with beer. Did I mention beer? The flights were fun, and unique in my experience was the opportunity to purchase 1, 2, 3, or more 6oz portions for a mini flight. Fresh donuts - with bourbon sauce - completed the meal."

  • "Perfect spot for locals and tourists alike to stop by if they're on the Mag Mile. Great food, great ambiance. Large booths if you're with that special someone. Beer list is surprisingly extensive. Decor reminds you of the Tribune Tower interior."

  • "In an area without a lot of unique, non-chain options, this was an excellent place for dinner. We enjoyed a dinner entirely of small plates with selections from the enormous beer and wine list. Desserts were interesting an yummy, too."

  • "The beer list at Howells and Hood is definitely worth some review and taste test. The menu also offers a broad variety of sandwiches and other tasty fare. The space is large, well-designed with booths and tables that are not spaced too closely. You can see how the mid section has been set-up for patio service in the warm weather and this would definitely be an enjoyable place to spend an afternoon. I had the fish banh mi - bread was good and the shaved carrots, celery, and cilantro added good taste. Fish was a little watery. My friend had the burger - it came with 2 thick onion rings. Very tasty. The sandwiches all come with fries - they are great."

  • "Chose this place for the 114 beers on tap, glad I did. Enjoyed by both friends from out of town. Food selection a little light, would prefer a few more options in the area of grilled vs. fried"

  • "Great selection of draft beers. Food was really good! Very unusual and some sophisticated options mixed in with good old comfort food like the smoked chicken and potatoes . The milk n cookies dessert is a must try! Tastes like an Oreo! Great atmosphere. Wonderful place for beer aficionados and big groups of friends"
