A word from Howells & Hood
One of the best restaurants in Chicago, in the heart of the Mag Mile. Nestled at the base of the legendary Tribune Tower, this stunning restaurant is a vibrant addition to one of Chicago’s most beloved and recognizable skyscrapers. Incorporating signature Tribune elements into our design, such as the etched travertine that came over from Italy, Howells & Hood pays homage to John Howells & Raymond Hood, architects of the Neo Gothic landmark. With a unique and refined culinary program, the largest draft beer selection in Chicago, and impressive staff, Howells & Hood is a magnificent compliment to Michigan Avenue.

Please note, we do not accept reservations for our patio tables. We will do our best to accommodate outdoor seating requests upon arrival. We look forward to serving you!

  • "This is the place to go in the summer for a burger and a beer. ....with a selection of what seems to be 100 different beers! The burgers are on brioche and the fries are parsley salted and crispy. Staff is very attentive and friendly. We ate inside, where it is a bit noisy, but if you're a group, you blend in. Inside may not be best for a quiet meal as it is very energetic. Outdoor dining is a plus in the city and it is away from the street so you don't have to deal with traffic noise or pollution."

  • "On our girl's night out, the 6 of us really enjoyed ourselves. The food was excellent & our waiter very accommodating. We were inside at a nice round table that facilitated our discussion on our book from book club. Although it was lovely outside, it would have been a lot noisier."

  • "When we arrived we had an option of in or outdoor. My party chose to be seated inside. We were greeted immediately by the wait staff and well taken care of by our waiter. We were not hurried and enjoyed the time we had for our visit. I might add that this was not our first visit to this establishment and we look forward to returning. Everything was excellent."

  • "Awesome outdoor seating, friendly wait staff and literally over 100 beers on tap. Great place to grab lunch or to get drinks."

  • "The food was nothing special but the beer list is great, and in the right weather sitting outside is wonderful."

  • "If you really love and know beer, you'll love Howell and Hoods. There are pages of beers and wines to choose from. It can be a more than a little intimidating for the casual beer drinker although the servers are quick with recommendations. In fact there are so many drink selections, it can seem like food is an afterthought. I'm happy to say it's not. We had a carnitas appetizer which was very flavorable and awesome homemade pork rinds. The burger and pulled pork entrees were also good. Service was pleasant but a bit leisurely for my taste. Overall a good experience and a place I'd return to."

  • "The menu selections in terms of food is small and the food is average at best. Beer list is why to go here."

  • "Arrived 10 minutes before Open Table reservation, dismissed then ignored by hostess. When I asked a different young fellow we were seated immediately! Asked THREE times, from waitress and wait staff for napkin and utensils. Overall service, very poor, noise level way to high, forget about having a conversation, but the food is good, beet salad, brisket and burger sandwich's good taste, good value. Would not recommend despite great location. Will not return."

  • "great place for lunch; nice selection of healthy items"

  • "Lots of background noise b/c there is not much to absorb sound. The wait staff person for the table on the other of the banquette was nearly shouting to be heard - not fun for us Smoked pork and brisket were both delicious sandwiches and the beet salad is killer!"

  • "We went for our usual date night. It was our first time there and the food was really good!. I had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and my husband had the fish tacos. Very delicious! I will be back to try other foods but I will take the kids ages 8 & 12 they would enjoy that."

  • "First night in Chicago and wanted something casual yet good food... Would highly recommend huge Hamburgers! Very nice casual restaurant.. Great outdoor dinning (not in January though)."

  • "We came here and were less than impressed with the service. The waiter was too busy to handle tables. We were turned down by a busy bus boy for removing empty plates. And our water was NEVER refilled during the entire hour that we were there! And perhaps the kitchen had an off night, but the fish tacos were disgusting and completely inedible. I could not eat them and had to order something else, yet they were not removed from our tab. (We tipped accordingly on our $100+ midweek dinner bill for 2 and wrote a note.) My dining companion had a sandwich which was equally unimpressive. (The fries were good.) Verdict? H&H is good for drinks, never go for the food."

  • "Bottleneck Management owns a bunch of bars but bringing in Chef Scott Walton for Howells & Hood has paid off in spades with elevating the food. Signature dishes like lamb meatballs and a really strong housemade charcuterie program (beef heart pastrami, lamb merguez sausage with harissa and fruit chutney couscous) will make this a carnivore's heaven. The heavier meat dishes are perfect for pairing with the hundreds of beers on tap. There are definitely lighter composed dishes too – from baby kale salad with a fried egg (runny yolk intact) and grapefruit to whole roasted trout with miso red quinoa and poached peaches – so there's something for every taste at a reasonable price point. Also, best patio in Chicago."

  • "Howells & Hood has an absolutely beautiful outdoor seating area. All the servers are extremely friendly and always coming to check in with your table. Food was prepared very well and tasted great. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone!"

  • "This was quite a find! Over 100 beers on tap. Fantastic food. Great for people watching. This will likely be my new watering hole in Chicago. Thanks to the concierge at Hotel Monaco for recommending it"

  • "A good place for cocktails & outdoor dining. Food was mediocre; the onion rings tasted fishy."

  • "Waiter would have to be asked for a drink, refill, or order three times before it actually was delivered. He had terrible dandruff as well that we were all afraid was falling in our meals. Plus, I could not believe that we were charged an additional $4 to an already pricey hummus plate ($12) and all we received were a few limited slivers of peppers and celery. Disappointing on the whole. Great outdoor patio but overpriced and poorly serviced."

  • "The location was fantastic, the food was okay, the host was clueless. And the waiter was totally incompetent even saying "my head just isn't in the game today"I would have to hope that I caught the help on a bad day and you could possibly have a good experience here. But my in my experience, the great atmosphere and location we're not nearly enough to offset the horrible service and just OK food"

  • "We had six of us at the table, we ordered beers. It took over 20 mins to get first beers. We then ordered 5 appetizers to share, the waiter said "i'm sure you're not going to want anything else to eat, so I'll take the menus". Ya we wanted to order more food!! So the apps came out and they were amazing! It took us another 15 mins to get more beers! Ugh! We ordered sanwiches then and they were also amazing! You could tell that all the wait staff were crabby, and under pressure. The manager wasn't very hospitably either. The food was great but the entire was horrible."

  • "Although it might be a stretch to call Howells and Hood "new" anymore, the location is still a buzz with the local business crowd. Great happy hour choice, great menu, unmatched beer selection and truly spectacular outdoor seating. That coupled with consistently great service will continue to make it easy to recommend this place to others."

  • "I've never had a really good meal at Howells and Hood, but end up there a few times during the summer when the outdoor patio area is available. The service is good and the outdoor patio is nice, but I do wish they would find some better recipes."

  • "Ambiance and waiter were nice, but we waited about an hour to get our food after we ordered. We only had burgers and sandwiches, and there were maybe three other tables filled in the restaurant. The patio was full, but it still should not have taken that long. We got a free order of donuts, which was nice. But I would likely not go back here."

  • "I have been really looking forward to eating at Howells and Hood. The resturant alone and outdoor seating looked great and right on Michigan Avenue. When we got there we were seated right on the edge of the resurant and asked to be moved so that we could really experience the resturant. The hostess rolled her eyes at us and told us to go back to our table and wait even though there were plenty of tables available. Once moved our server was nice and they have a great drink selection and the menu looked very intriguing. Once we got our food it was just average. I expected and really wanted more from this resturant. If I go back it would be to get drinks and maybe a appetizer."

  • "We have been here quite a few times, and the food and service are always good. We are big users of Open Table and had earned a $100 gift certificate:) and the restaurant gave us a very hard time about using it. We were told if we didn't use the entire amount we would not be given any change, and we could not use it towards tip. Needless to say I did not use it, which I'm certain was their goal."

  • "Outdoor dining is excellent, off the street, but still a fantastic view of the river and buildings. Only there for lunch and had an excellent salad. Partner had the fish tacos which were also excellent."

  • "We had a diverse group that wanted to watch the World Cup together and this was the PERFECT fit for it. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation and they still immediately seated us. Over 12 pages of beers for the guys and yummy salads for the girls (though I wouldn't recommend the kale one, but everyone else enjoyed their food). All in all a great experience - would love to return when we DON'T need a TV and can watch outside!"

  • "Went here to watch the USA-Portgual game during a recent trip to Chicago; as others have said, it is a fancy sports bar. Food was okay and service was okay. Nothing special, but they do have a lot of tvs."

  • "The outdoor patio is beautiful and in a good location. Unfortunately, our dinner inside was not so good. Our meal was cooked wrong, our waiter could not hear us due to the noise level and instead of leaning in to hear better, just ignored us. It was very odd overall. The menu tries too hard to be different. My husband could not find anything he liked on the dinner menu so ended up with a burger. You would think that would be easy, but he ordered it medium rare and it came well done. It tasted like meatloaf instead of a burger. Overall, not happy. Went another time and sat on the patio to drink beer. Good for that!"

  • "The front staff was very welcoming and accommodating. One guest arrived before I did and it was nice that she was seated right away. The other guest was very late but our waiter (Greg) was nice and patient. He checked on us periodically until she arrived. Overall, the food had great presentation but tasted like warmed up leftovers. We would not have minded waiting longer for food just freshly made. My cranberry juice was very watered down. It needs to be clearer on the menu that the tomato soup is served cold. However, the deserts were tasty. The donuts seemed to be the freshest of all the dishes served and therefore tasted the best. I wished my Oreos had a larger portion of ice milk."

  • "Went here with a friend for lunch outside and a beer sampling. Both were great. The outside patio is huge and well decorated, and perfect with the umbrellas to be out of the sun. We sampled 3 beers, then ordered more as well. The beer on tap list is incredible. The food is great as well. Highly recommend the hummus appetizer."

  • "The food was decent at best, although the hummus appetizer was good. The place was VERY noisy, quite distracting at times. Quality wine selection. Our waiter was quite good and softened the less appealing aspects of the dining experience."

  • "Starters and dinner were delicious. Extensive beer list let everybody get a little experimental. Once we got used to talking really loud, it felt normal--just a lot of sound bouncing."

  • "This place is known for their selection of craft beers (114 on draft) and several flight options or make your own. The food was also pretty good - good selection and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. However, it may be a better place to go for a few drinks than to sit down for a meal because it was very, very loud and hard to hold a conversation amongt a group of 7 of us. Perhaps if the outdoor dining area was open, the ambiance would have been more enjoyable, but it was raining when we were there. I would go back to try outdoor seating."

  • "The meat on the meat plate was average to below average, while the cheese plate was delicious. Server was very nice but when the food runner dropped the food there was no follow-up explanation as to the specific meats and cheeses. Started the evening outside where it took several minutes for our cocktail server to deliver a glass of wine. It began to pour rain and staff seemed to have a tough time helping outside guests transition indoors. First time there, won't go back."

  • "Met a friend after work. Sat outside in their great patio space. Food was ok. Loved the chilled tomato soup and hummus appetizer. I was really looking forward to the cauliflower dish and at $14 I thought for sure it was going to be great. Big disappointment. No traces of the promised gruyere and absolutely nothing else worth $4 let along $14. The service was probably the worst part. Our server brought us items we didn't order and took 20 minutes to get our drink order. It was a beautiful night, so we didn't mind waiting, but we were thirsty. I probably wouldn't go back unless someone else suggested it."

  • "I sat at a table by the bar for 20 min, and nobody even noticed me. Got seated and the server didn't come by for at least 15 minutes. When she did arrive, she was very helpful, even customizing a flight of beer for me (she picked them). They were all awesome!! The food was good but took forever to get there. Our server suggested we order dinner shortly after ordering our appetizer due to the kitchen back up. Excellent call. She was good, but had too many tables to cover. I will definitely go back and give them another chance since the food and service were both good, once they finally arrived."

  • "The concierge at our hotel recommended Howells & Hood to me for an important business dinner. This was a total mistake. The restaurant is really a sports bar, and I wouldn't mind the TVs but the music is blasting so loud you can't talk. We were moved to an outside table, which was lovely on a summer night, and if you're not hear the open restaurant window-walls you don't hear too much of the music. But we had a short thundershower so we had to move indoors, and even after the rain stopped they would not let us back out on the patio. (Our table did not have an umbrella.) Beer selection (114 on draught) is great; wine list is lousy. Beet salad ($14) too high but otherwise food was good. If you can't eat outside, don't go."

  • "What a shame that the calamari comes out soggy and warm rather than crisp and hot. What a shame the trout has an odd texture as if frozen and improperly thawed. What a shame that the pork belly is all fat, but strangely devoid of flavor. This is a great setting outside and comfortable enough inside. It is wildly popular as an afterwork watering hole and tourist meeting place. Go for the beer and leave when you feel pangs of hunger."
