Diner Reviews
  • "Though there is currently a good deal of road work and park improvement work going on, I look forward to the opportunity to dine outside again at Hot Tomatoes when the view to the park is cleared. Monica was a friendly, courteous, helpful and watchful waitress. Thank you Monica, you are appreciated."

  • "Its rare you have that truly outstanding meal, but this was it for us. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday and each of our meals was perfect. I had the best veal parm of my life, the Fra Diavolo was great as were the other dishes we had. We ate outside in perfect weather, across from the park in downtown Hartford. Service was prompt and excellent. We would easily go back very soon."

  • "Went on a Saturday evening. Only 3 tables of guests and a few people at the bar. Waitress came over and asked to take our order and we hadn't been given menu's. Did not know what beers they have. When I asked she replied what do you want I'll see if we have it. Appetizers arrived quickly but everything seemed rushed . Like they wanted to get rid of us even though it was emty. Had to ask for bread that the other tables were given. Had to ask twice for grated cheese in an Italian restaurant? Air conditioning was freezing our dinners came out 40 mins after we completed our apps. Desert was a mushy mess . Just a horrible experience. We won't be back. Very disappointed"

  • "We had dinner & food was excellent, however our dinner was inconvenienced by a person just outside the door on patio SMOKING A CIGAR. Smoke was drifting into the door & not only impacting the people outside, but the smell was going inside. The wait staff tried their best too keep the door closed. (VERY inconvenient for them, because they needed to go in/out many times). They were afraid to ask the (very rude) customer NOT TO SMOKE, because the owner is a cigar smoker, & might have known the person. If I had been outside on the patio, I WOULD HAVE LEFT. As it was, I was not comfortable smelling the cigar even where I was. I have gone to Hot Tomatoes many times & the food is very good, if this happens again, it will be the last time I go."

  • "The waitress was lamenting that the kitchen staff was working with only 2 cooks. Our veal was raw, the pasta order was incorrect and it took 30min and 3 requests before we received bread rolls. The owner was sitting at the bar and only after the waitress complained to him did they offer us dessert. We tipped her well, realizing she was dealing with a difficult situation including poor leadership. The manager/owner never came to our table. Hopefully he enjoyed the Red Sox game that he was watching while having a beer. AVOID --"

  • "I love Hot Tomato's. I have gone to Hot Tomato's on several different occasions and have never had a bad experience at this restaurant. Each time I walk into Hot Tomato's I've been greeted with a warm friendly smile, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, the food is so good and the wait staff is always top notch. It's one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Hartford and I highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion."

  • "My girlfriends and I went to this restaurant for dinner before the Paint Nite event they were hosting that we had tickets to. I enjoyed the Spasta Pesto and my friends enjoyed the garlic bread, although I thought it tasted like those cheese puff snacks and I can get those much cheaper at the grocery store if I want to eat unhealthy food. One of my friends is a Vegan and the only thing she could get is a salad. Since they have several vegetarian menu options I had expected they would have at least 2 Vegan friendly options besides simple, not-so-filling salads, but no dice. It was also a rainy day and there were a few drips of water falling from the ceiling onto our table, occasionally."

  • "As with most of Connecticut restaurants, everything is a-la-carte. Dishes are not large and, therefore, overpriced. Food was good. No bread served. Advertised happy hour till 6:30. This special is only good in bar, not in the upstairs restaurant, which they don't tell you."

  • "Well-rounded menu makes it hard to choose (everything looks good!); thankfully we are often "saved" by delicious specials featuring fresh seasonal ingredients. Fun drink menu and solid wine list, with many interesting selections at value prices. And don't forget to order the garlic bread!! Staff is friendly and professional."

  • "Hot Tomato's was spectacular. The front of the restaurant has a busy bar scene with high cocktail tables. The middle section is a bit quieter with booths. We had a large group, and they put us in a quiet, private room in the back with lovely exposed brick walls. The wait staff was friendly and very welcoming to a group from out of town. The wine was great and the food was fantastic. Would definitely recommend."

  • "We had 14 at Hot Tomato's for a late Saturday lunch after CCSU graduation ceremonies at the XL Center, and they handled us (and some other large groups) very well. The food was well prepared and universally enjoyed."

  • "Mom looked for veal all over CT when visiting from Virginia. While she comes every year, this was her first time at Hot Tomatos. She loved the resturant and the veal! Everyone should stop by and try it! Great job! "

  • "This is a great restaurant for the business lunch crowd. Menu is diverse but not overwhelming. They stick to what they do well. The service is friendly and quick. The main room is a very open environment. Very dependable and affordable. "

  • "We went for the Mother's day buffet at 6pm. However the food was still all out from brunch.. the dessert table appeared to have been ransacked by a pack of wild animals and at least 50% of the food that was out was breakfast food (scrambled eggs, waffles, bagels, etc). For $30 per person, I expected much better. I've been to this restaurant before and enjoyed it. Not sure I'll be back.. Definitely won't be back for a special occasion. "

  • "I took my young daughters to a show at The Bushell and took them to dinner after. I made the reservation 10 days prior so there wouldn't be any issues. We arrived during a big rainstorm and we were all quite wet and cold. The hostess went to seat us in the bar by the doorway and I asked if we could sit in the dining room. She said she seated the last table in there and the others were reservered. I pointed out that we had a reservation so why couldn't sit in the dining room. She said if we wanted the dining room seating then next time we should request it. I don't believe that a reservation should hold a seat in the bar. Those should be for walk-ins. There will be no next time."

  • "This restaurant was fantastic. I came with a woman on our first date and realized that I had made reservations for the previous evening. The staff was friendly and accommodating and found us a table right away. The waitress even remembered my special requests in my reservation. The restaurant and it's staff are truly wonderful"

  • "Another fabulous meal. Servicer was warm, friendly and entertaining. We had traditional garlic bread. Yumm. Walnut and cranberry salad. Fish dishes: Shrimp Malto and Canjun Sole. Everything was perfect. Thanks for a great time. "

  • "Hot Tomatoes is located within 2 blocks of the Hartford XL Center. It was the perfect restaurant for us before the Wolf Pack game. There was something on the menu for adults and children. The wait staff was very attentive, filling water glasses before they were empty and working with us to choose the right meal. They willingly accommodated small changes, like dressing on the side and dishes prepared for 1 instead of 2 as normal. The portion sizes were generous, the food delicious, and after all these years, the garlic bread with cheese is still terrific."

  • "We patronized Hot Tomato's on Sat. 4/5 during the UConn basketball game. The hostess was friendly (and helpful when I phoned ahead of our arrival) and our server took great care of our party of 6. Apps, entrees and drinks were well-prepared. The owner visited our table to give his regrets for the lively Husky fans watching the game in the bar area. We didn't mind. We were still able to enjoy our intimate group and keep tabs on the game just from the roar of the bar crowd. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience."

  • "Hadn't been there in 15 years, and it was unrecognizable. Every dish was just so "blah". Pasta was overcooked, and not fresh, and each of the six people eating felt their entree was sub par. No wonder they had space available!"

  • "We had dinner at Hot Tomato's to watch the final 4. It was very fun since the owner is a UConn alumni. I deviated from my regular veal chop and the steak was equally awesome. My husband and nephew ordered a consistently good chicken parmesan. Wish we could be there for the final men's game tonight. It was a lot of fun watching the game in this vibrant atmosphere. The fun included the cheerleader Dave DiNeno, UConn alum. Hot Tomato's is still my favorite!"

  • "Hot Tomato's used to be our go to spot for special occasions and we hadn't been there in awhile. We were very disappointed with the food this time. It was just okay. The garlic bread was great of course but my son's small bowl of pasta came with about a stick of butter melted in the bottom if the bowl. It was actually very unappetizing. We will not be rushing back."

  • "food was okay; diet coke tasted like none I've ever had before; party of 10 women behind us ( my 4 friends and me) were beyond noisy and boisterous. garlic bread was good; salad-mediocre; my friends enjoyed the ravioli; an O.K. place for lunch"

  • "I was joined by my wife and parents-in-law for a nice dinner. The wine list was reasonable and we ordered a bottle of 14 Hands, a cabernet that everyone enjoyed. We ordered the cheese/garlic bread which is a must. Our meals were all well liked and came out in a short amount of time. Service was excellent and we will definitely be back again. The manager/owner came by towards the end of the meal and check on how everything was which was nice. For dessert, we tried the homemade key lime pie. For $7/slice, the servings were a bit small but did taste good."

  • "Always enjoy dining at Hot Tomato's. My veal chop is consistently excellent. Music was a jazz duo and excellent-not too loud but had a great vibe. We enjoy dining in the bar because we always see people we know. This time was no different, I even saw my cousin Billy who I haven't seen in ages. Hot Tomato's remains our favorite restaurant and bar."

  • "Food was good , was not the atmosphere I was expecting. We were originally sat downstairs in loud bar, but was then told we could have a table upstairs. I found it odd that I made a reservation to sit at a bar. For future if I want to go have good food , sit at bar and have some drinks while listening to live band then I would go to Hot Tomatoes. Parking is lacking, so get ready to spend $10 just to park. I enjoyed the selection of bottled beers, and wife liked the wine selection. Desert was delicious."

  • "Poor service, lots of spilled food, and incorrectly cooked steaks (returned to the kitchen more than once) left us feeling we wouldn't want to return. A coworker had sauce spilled all over her by a food runner, and the server thought she'd done it to herself! Unfortunately, we have had several issues with Hot Tomato's and keep saying, "let's just try them again - it can't always be that bad." We now know better."

  • "We've eaten lunch here several times prior to an afternoon concert and were always very happy with the food and service. This time, we were disappointed in both. We found the service to be indifferent - the waitress seemed impatient at times and did not get our order right. Also, the entrees were brought out before our salad plates were cleared, so all four of us were holding up our salad plates until the entrees were put down and the waitress could take the salad plates. The food this time was ok - some good and some not. We've always liked this place, so we hope it was just a bad day."

  • "Hot tomatoes was in all honesty the single best restaurant I've ever been to for the quality of food. A tad pricey, but uncredibley worth it. I would go out on a limb and say it was underpriced for the quality of the food and stmosphere. 10/10"
