Diner Reviews
  • "Another fabulous meal. Servicer was warm, friendly and entertaining. We had traditional garlic bread. Yumm. Walnut and cranberry salad. Fish dishes: Shrimp Malto and Canjun Sole. Everything was perfect. Thanks for a great time. "

  • "Hot Tomatoes is located within 2 blocks of the Hartford XL Center. It was the perfect restaurant for us before the Wolf Pack game. There was something on the menu for adults and children. The wait staff was very attentive, filling water glasses before they were empty and working with us to choose the right meal. They willingly accommodated small changes, like dressing on the side and dishes prepared for 1 instead of 2 as normal. The portion sizes were generous, the food delicious, and after all these years, the garlic bread with cheese is still terrific."

  • "Hadn't been there in 15 years, and it was unrecognizable. Every dish was just so "blah". Pasta was overcooked, and not fresh, and each of the six people eating felt their entree was sub par. No wonder they had space available!"

  • "We patronized Hot Tomato's on Sat. 4/5 during the UConn basketball game. The hostess was friendly (and helpful when I phoned ahead of our arrival) and our server took great care of our party of 6. Apps, entrees and drinks were well-prepared. The owner visited our table to give his regrets for the lively Husky fans watching the game in the bar area. We didn't mind. We were still able to enjoy our intimate group and keep tabs on the game just from the roar of the bar crowd. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience."

  • "We had dinner at Hot Tomato's to watch the final 4. It was very fun since the owner is a UConn alumni. I deviated from my regular veal chop and the steak was equally awesome. My husband and nephew ordered a consistently good chicken parmesan. Wish we could be there for the final men's game tonight. It was a lot of fun watching the game in this vibrant atmosphere. The fun included the cheerleader Dave DiNeno, UConn alum. Hot Tomato's is still my favorite!"

  • "Hot Tomato's used to be our go to spot for special occasions and we hadn't been there in awhile. We were very disappointed with the food this time. It was just okay. The garlic bread was great of course but my son's small bowl of pasta came with about a stick of butter melted in the bottom if the bowl. It was actually very unappetizing. We will not be rushing back."

  • "food was okay; diet coke tasted like none I've ever had before; party of 10 women behind us ( my 4 friends and me) were beyond noisy and boisterous. garlic bread was good; salad-mediocre; my friends enjoyed the ravioli; an O.K. place for lunch"

  • "Service was very good. Got there early before going to a show at The Bushnell. Have been there before and remember the food being excellent. This time, it was just OK. Might try one more time. Maybe it was an off night."

  • "I was joined by my wife and parents-in-law for a nice dinner. The wine list was reasonable and we ordered a bottle of 14 Hands, a cabernet that everyone enjoyed. We ordered the cheese/garlic bread which is a must. Our meals were all well liked and came out in a short amount of time. Service was excellent and we will definitely be back again. The manager/owner came by towards the end of the meal and check on how everything was which was nice. For dessert, we tried the homemade key lime pie. For $7/slice, the servings were a bit small but did taste good."

  • "Always enjoy dining at Hot Tomato's. My veal chop is consistently excellent. Music was a jazz duo and excellent-not too loud but had a great vibe. We enjoy dining in the bar because we always see people we know. This time was no different, I even saw my cousin Billy who I haven't seen in ages. Hot Tomato's remains our favorite restaurant and bar."

  • "Food was good , was not the atmosphere I was expecting. We were originally sat downstairs in loud bar, but was then told we could have a table upstairs. I found it odd that I made a reservation to sit at a bar. For future if I want to go have good food , sit at bar and have some drinks while listening to live band then I would go to Hot Tomatoes. Parking is lacking, so get ready to spend $10 just to park. I enjoyed the selection of bottled beers, and wife liked the wine selection. Desert was delicious."

  • "Poor service, lots of spilled food, and incorrectly cooked steaks (returned to the kitchen more than once) left us feeling we wouldn't want to return. A coworker had sauce spilled all over her by a food runner, and the server thought she'd done it to herself! Unfortunately, we have had several issues with Hot Tomato's and keep saying, "let's just try them again - it can't always be that bad." We now know better."

  • "Been a while since I tried HT for dinner and food was below average. I eat out 5 times a week and the Chicken Parm might have been the worst I have experienced in a long time. I NEVER send food back but did that night. They prepared another one equally as dry and below average. Need to do better!"

  • "We've eaten lunch here several times prior to an afternoon concert and were always very happy with the food and service. This time, we were disappointed in both. We found the service to be indifferent - the waitress seemed impatient at times and did not get our order right. Also, the entrees were brought out before our salad plates were cleared, so all four of us were holding up our salad plates until the entrees were put down and the waitress could take the salad plates. The food this time was ok - some good and some not. We've always liked this place, so we hope it was just a bad day."

  • "Hot tomatoes was in all honesty the single best restaurant I've ever been to for the quality of food. A tad pricey, but uncredibley worth it. I would go out on a limb and say it was underpriced for the quality of the food and stmosphere. 10/10"

  • "Met an important client at Restaurant. Arrived early asked for water with lemon, sat for 15 minutes and finally caught someone walking by with a pitcher. Special was Lasagne. it was not hot, noodles under cooked and rubbery and almost tasteless. Ate a few bites. When leaving asked for it to go, teenagers will eat anything, That evening discovered I was given someone else's meal. I used to really like the restaurant, saw the chance to eat there a treat.....was disappointed. I never answer these requests but felt I had to this time. JF"

  • "Food was GREAT. The gralic bread with Blue cheese crumble was amazing and the Chef's Ragu was so good I almost ate it all (a very large portion). Took my wife here for a nice dinner and got exactly that."

  • "We attended the Sunday beer tasting event with a group of friends and family and what fun we had. The food was fantastic with mussels, lamb chops, pork chops and some awesome cake made with beer. The band, New Remains was so much fun. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the middle of winter."

  • "Came for restaurant week early saturday night. GreAt waitress wonderful tortellini rose and reisling. My husband thought the shrimp scampi was good but not great. Tiramisu lacked flavor/depth (just a bit shy of mark)"

  • "I have been going to Hot Tomatoes since they first opened in their original location with just a few tables. I kept going back specifically for the Tortellini Rose. The new recipe is not good at all. Finish before the music starts. You cant hold a conversation over dinner with the volume of live music."

  • "I recently had dinner at Hot Tomato with my girlfriend on just a regular Friday night. I had never been to Hot Tomato before, but had heard good things. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the things I heard about Hot Tomato were right on point. It had an extensive menu with many delicious looking items. The specials for the evening all sounded excellent as well. I was also pleased with the wine list!"

  • "My volleyball team and I were down in Hartford for Winterfest over the weekend and I made reservations for 22 people. The manager on duty was phenomenal and the waitstaff was very attentive and efficient. We had 12 separate checks and everything was completely seamless! The food was great and our entire party enjoyed the experience. I would definitely recommend Hot Tomato's and we will definitely be eating there again for our team dinner next year!"

  • "We love Hot Tomato's. Food is excellent and reasonably priced. Atmosphere is very welcoming. My favorites include the veal chop and steak. My husband tries something new each time. We will keep coming back."

  • "They appear to be "cheap". Had to ask for bread & butter. When asked, was told we don't provide unless asked. There was 4 of us, and we received exactly 4 rolls and 4 butters. This is cheap! Also, every item was additional. No soup or salad included in the main course."

  • "Great meals, spirits, service and ambience for New Year's Eve in Hartford! Plus, you're on the doorstep of the city's Fireworks in Bushnell Park, and, if you're tough enough to brave the cold, join others on the outdoor patio to see the show. Memorable evening for sure!"

  • "Recently visited Hot Tomato's with friends. The restaurant was beautiful - dressed in tiny holiday lights. Service was good, wine was tasty, but the entree was disappointing. I've had Torte Rose many times; an old favorite, but this will likely be my last. The pasta was soft and overcooked and had the flavor of frozen pasta from a warehouse club. The sausage was not chunks of spiciness that I remember, rather diagonal slices of mediocre links that lacked zip of any kind. The sauce that I've enjoyed in the past - generous amounts of creamy lusciousness - was lackluster at best. And not enough of it - my pasta was dry. Never given a negative review of any restaurant, and I'm saddened to give this to one of Hartford's gems."

  • "This is just a very average restaurant serving very average food. Service was not great as the timing between the salad and main course was very poor. I would not rush to go back."

  • "We took our children and grandchildren to Hot Tomato's after attending The Nutcracker at the Bushnell. The staff was wonderful and attentive to the small children. Even the kitchen staff was quite friendly. Since there are two large rooms, small children and large groups do not detract from the more intimate setting upstairs. The food is very good. I had the veal parmesan, which was very crispy and had the bone in. Large portions to share or take some home."
