A word from Hofbrauhaus - Chicago
Hofbräuhaus Chicago is the first and only German micro brewery, beer hall, restaurant and beer garden to call Chicago home. Modeled after the legendary Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany, it takes pride giving you an experience as authentic and unforgettable as the 400-year-old original. Guests can savor schnitzels, sausages, Sauerbraten and pretzels, and some ingredients are even imported from abroad. The freshly brewed beer follows the purity law from 1516 using original recipes handed down by the Duke of Bavaria over 400 years ago. With its beer hall (Schwemme), King Ludwig Room, and Biergarten in summer, it's Oktoberfest every day. Hofbräuhaus Chicago also features live music nightly with bands from Germany and Austria. In addition, you can take a piece of Bavaria home from the gift shop stocked with authentic and unique Bavarian gifts & collectibles.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was ok. The service was great. We could not use our credit card unless a fee was paid. We haven't encountered this scam in years. This place is not worth it."

  • "Food was fine, and representative of German fare I have had in the past. The staff were high energy, with a band playing in costume, and seeking audience participation. There was a lot of entertainment going on, making conversation a little hard to have at times, but a fun environment with good food and fair pricing."

  • "To start the food was very good but little pricey. I had the sauerbraten and the pork roast combination plate. Some other members of my party tried the jäger schnitzel and the chicken schnitzel both thought the food was great. My 3 year loved the bench dance. Atmosphere was energetic but at times a little loud so table conversations were a little difficult. The problem came when the bill arrived we had some visa gift cards and one card went thorough no problem the other not so much and the waitress said she had to enter the correct amount at the end of day or something to that effect because it would not take. Seemed shady it worked out but maybe she should have explained a little better. Overall I would recommend going and I would go back"

  • "You truly feel like you are in Germany when dining here - it's been a great addition to the Chicago area. Authentic food and live music, and great beer!"

  • "Just a miniature version of the Munich establishment! Food is very German Beer is ausgezeichnet!"

  • "This restaurant was a great new atmosphere. First time experiencing a german brewery such as this and I had a great time. The service was alright. Our waitress seemed to be stressed, with all the tables she had to wait on and wasn't that welcoming. With that aside, the beer was amazing. My group of friends and I had a great time laughing at others and doing the chicken dance on the tables. The band is great! They are very friendly and kept the energy going."

  • "Having been to the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, I was expecting to be disappointed in the Chicago version. To my surprise, though, this place was really great! The live German band played the entire time I was there, and every 15 minutes or so would lead the entire hall in a drinking song or chant. They had the same sort of long tables, sit with your neighbor style as Munich, and while the place wasn't quite the same as the original, they recreated it close enough for me to go back. My one complaint is that everything is pretty expensive, with most of the menu items that you will want to get ranging from $18-25, plus the signature 1L stein of beer will set you back $13."

  • "If you have ever been to the Hofbrauhaus in Munich you will appreciate how well the Rosemont incarnation reflects that venerable institution. The place is rowdy-loud. The food is excellent and so is the entertainment, when you can hear it over the din. We've been about a dozen times and will go many more times. The beer alone is worth the trip but the food and service are nothing to sniff at. Be prepared for a good hit on the credit card - nothing of this quality comes cheap. Prosit!"

  • "Just too loud. Can't talk to your friends. Much too loud much too loud"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Very loud. Very large. Great fun! If you like to be paddled, do a shot! Food was very good. I would give ambience four stars, with the energy and singing, but it won't be for everyone."

  • "I've been here a lot and it's always a great time, even if you're not there to celebrate something it always feels like a big community party. The servers and hostess are very nice!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here. The food was great and service was too. Definitely a party atmosphere - very loud. We plan to go again."

  • "Authentic Munich Oktoberfest Stimmung, an attentive waitress, plus a loud band and very good (expensive) beer; quite good, reasonably priced German dishes; prepare to shout to each other."

  • "We went here for dinner the week before my birthday. It was loud but fun!! Enjoyed the food and people around us. It was definitely loud with a lot of singing!! It was great!"

  • "We ate here on a Friday afternoon & had a great meal! It was very busy at the time we went, but didn't want to be there when it was packed. We both had the schnitzel & it was pretty good! I lived in Germany for 8 years as a kid & this place comes pretty close to being authentic German food...just my opinion. The staff was very polite & our waitress was fairly attentive, but disappeared at times. We will definitely be back in the near future!"

  • "Great service! Good food and very loud!!!! Perfect place for a large group of people not so much if you want to talk."

  • "Beware. No substitutions and extras cost extra. A casual evening with four people was over $200 with tip, and that did not include excessive bar bill - which seemed to be everywhere around us."

  • "Really had a great time, but would have had an even better time if we would have gone with a group. It's a lot of fun and very energetic place. The food was excellent. We brought dessert back with us because we were too full to eat it there. Look forward to getting a group together and going again."

  • "My husband ordered the veal schnitzel and veal bratwurst which served both meats on top of ice cold potato salad so his meats were lukewarm at best. I had the sauerbraten and the pork roast. The sauerbraten was tasty but not too hot, and the loin pork roast was mostly fat and lukewarm. I know it was the day after Valentine's day but I expected better quality food than we received. We were very disappointed in our meal. We had to wait almost 10 minutes for our waitress to take our drink order and then she just put them on the table and said she would be right back to take our order which wasn't exactly true. We were looking forward to eating here and walked away saying never again."

  • "The restaurant was full of energy and fun! Great place to practice your German. Chicken was really good. Not a place for vegetarians as I only saw one veggie option other than a salad, however, it is a German restaurant. One should not expect a great variety of veggie plates at a German restaurant."

  • "Very fun place. They had a band that was very fun and entertaining. Everyone at our table got the big beers. The Dunkel was excellent. Dinner was mediocre but the appetizer we had was good. It was potato pancakes with salmon. We would definitely go back and sit in the bar."

  • "Food was great. Atmosphere was special. My mom and son danced in the aisle. The entertainment was very interactive with the crowd, but not overly so. the food was great. Although my 6 year old ordered the pork stew. He is a good water, but it was surprisingly spicy, so he didn't eat it. My German husband said that was unusual to have spicy food. My sauerbraten was great, I are it all. I've already recommended this place to my German inlaws."

  • "Real bier! a taste of Germany when you can't fly there."

  • "I would have given more stars except for two things. I wish that you could choose your sides rather than being forced fries - really fries with schnitzel? Also, you have to pay for bread...in a German restaraunt, you have to pay $1 for a slice of German rye?"

  • "Hofbrauhaus is awesome! We went there with a big group for a birthday party and everyone had a blast! The food was great, service was excellent and the entertainment was amazing! They have a German band there leading sing alongs and dance alongs with the crowd. It was great!"

  • "We loved the restaurant! The food is terrific and service was even better! The band was a lot of fun and got everyone involved! It is loud when the band is playing but otherwise pretty quiet."

  • "Great crowd participation experience. Excellent German food. Great service by Bavarian-dressed women. German Oompah band. Best Sauerbraten outside of Bavaria. Excellent beer - Dunkel is my favorite - order the 1 liter. Great group experience."

  • "It was very noisy but a good time had by all. Food was pricey but tasty. If you are celebrating a special occasion or just want to try out a new place full of excitement, come here. The beers are huge and they normally have a live band playing German music. Overall ambiance is enjoyable but do NOT come here if you have a headache."

  • "Went here for a relative's b-day dinner. My family and I got there early, and things looked promising. It took a few minutes to get seated, but after that the waitress was friendly and service was fast. We then moved into the room where my relative's dinner was being held. Different story. We hardly ever saw our waitress, and she told our hostess up front that we'd have to vacate the table by 9 p.m. It took about an hour for her to get our dinner order, and the food took almost another hour. While we waited, the band played "Happy Birthday" every 5-10 minutes. This place is OK if you want to go to a beer hall and don't have a large party. But if you want good German food and a nice atmosphere, go to Lincoln Square."

  • "The food was amazing, our waitress was amazing, but the hostesses were evil. We had been seated as soon as we got there because I had reservations a week in advance for a Friday night. We had ordered our food and drinks already when a hostess approached us and very rudely asked up to get up and sit somewhere else. I have never been treated that way by anyone before. We refused to move and explained to her that we were seated by another hostess and that I had reservations and our food was already ordered. She said "OK WHATEVER, That's FINE" and walked away with her customers she was trying to seat."

  • "The beer is the first and best reason to go to Hofbrauhaus. I understand it's brewed on premises and it tastes pretty darn close to the imported stuff. Top notch, perhaps my favorite beer, but there are so many great beers these days. The entertainment was fun, even toned down to a hard working duo during lunch on a frigid January Saturday. The food was quite good, but I have been eating at German and Austrian restaurants for decades It wasn't exceptional. On balance, it was very good and I'll be back."

  • "We have been to the Hofbrauhaus Houses in Munich as well as Vegas. This one has a way to go to get to their level, but it was an enjoyable evening. The food was delicious, the menu is huge. Great comfort food for a sub zero night. It was early 5-6 p.m. so I think things were just getting started as far as noise levels. Pricey, but a nice evening out. We were able to watch all of the ice skating outside the building through the glass windows which made it even nicer."

  • "The German band was awesome, the beer was great and authentic German beer, the food was hot and very tasty. The audience participation with the band made you feel like you were in Germany! Will definitely come back for more food, fun and beer."

  • "In fairness, we didn't know what we were getting into when we met friends here. We thought we might actually get to talk to them, but it's not that kind of place. We thought it would be in the tradition of some of Chicago's old, authentic German restaurants, but it's a Disney-fied version of a German beer garden. The food was fine, definitely not "great" or "amazing" as some reviewers have opined."

  • "Some of the dishes they get right - some are way off base. Seems maybe they are trying to Americanize some dishes maybe? But, the atmosphere is right on target. We had a blast there on a Saturday night. Great music and lots of fun!"
