Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed the band in the lounge while waiting for table. Went for Brunch and had the Eggs Benedict which were perfectly cooked. Doughnut Holes for an appetizer were amazing. Great service. Would go back."

  • "The food was hit and miss. For starters, My girlfriend ordered a Gimlet and an "Ice cold shot" of vodka, shot was warm. The New York Strip I ordered, though tasty and cooked properly, was overpriced at 32.00( I live in Atlanta, a New York Strip at one of the finest steak houses is only 26.00). The gnocci that came on the side was tasty, but the spinach was uber salty. My girlfriend had the fried clams and gumbo. The breading on the clams, though tasty, was heavy when we were told it was light and thin. The gumbo had a light colored, almost translucent gelatinous roux, as opposed to a medium thick darker roux that you would typically expect and also the seafood in it was sub par(pencil eraser sized scallops, popcorn shrimp). Band was hot."

  • "Had a great dinner this Wednesday. Had a drink in the bar before dinner and enjoyed the combo playing very much, they were great."

  • "We were a party of 4 dining to complete a day of business meetings. The food was a good as ever but the service was completely inappropriate for our purpose for dining at High Cotton. The waiter only interrupted our conversation every time he wanted to take our order, serve food, fill water glasses, clear, etc. I understand his desire to be attentive, but he needs to put his attentiveness in service to his customers, not in service to his schedule."

  • "Really lovely atmosphere for brunch - the pecan syrup was really perfect with the buckwheat and blueberry pancakes!"

  • "Good appetizers. Main course not great. Great service. Loved the terrific live music in bar. Fabulous key lime pie. Salad just ok."

  • "Got a pleasant surprise when the usually packed High Cotton was having a slow day when I brought four out-of-town friends for Sunday brunch.we had reservations in the restaurant but moved to the mostly empty bar area where we had the great jazz band mostly to ourselves. A lovely, lazy Sunday morning. And the food was great too."

  • "A southern gem in a revitalized market area is how I would characterize High Cotton. The restaurant features a full menu of southern specialities. Atmosphere is charming and mixes the past with the present. Prices range from moderate and up. I would recommend this to anyone visiting the area"

  • "When we arrived 5 minutes early we were told we could at the bar and wait. The bartender was very rude. Not a great first impression. The food was great and so was the waiter, but the bus boys were not the friendliest either."

  • "Had lived in Charleston for a few years, but went for the first time with out of town guests for brunch. Everything was great- is probably the best the best brunch spot downtown, can't say enough about the quality of food."

  • "As usual , out of town guests are very impressed here. Our food was very good. An excellent experience."

  • "High Cotton was a great dining experience. The staff was friendly especially our server - Mattison. I ordered the lamb and it was superb! The presentation was very appealing, temperature was perfect, and it tasted delicious! I'm not a big fan of hummus, but the hummus that was served had tons of flavor. Mattison was very attentive and accommodating. We were seated beside a window which worked great for us. I highly recommend considering High Cotton for any dining occasion."

  • "Great spot to spoil yourselves as a couple for either a special occasion or simply a Parents Night Out. Food was spectacular! I had the scallops dish and they were cooked to perfection! Elisa (sp?) our waitress was fabulous! Definitely recommend High Cotton as a "splurge" for parents!"

  • "I made reservations on line for a Sunday evening and arrived about 15 minutes early, was seated right away. Jessica (our server) was very attentive and professional (something I do not take for granted because they can make or break your visit). We ordered the Clam and Mussel appetizer and it was very satisfying in quality and quantity (simple, yet very flavorful). My wife ordered the 12 oz. Strip and I went with the special (Grilled Whole Pink Trout) as suggested by our server. We were both pleased but not "overwhelmed" with the entrees. Dessert was the Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream and this was a very fine finish to a really nice dinner night in a great town and fine atmosphere!"

  • "A wonderful Charleston find. The food and service were top notch!"

  • "Great brunch. The lobster salad (roll) was excellent on par with many Maine establishments. The shrimp and grits were up there with the best in Charleston according to my husband. Shrimp were perfectly cooked and not swimming in the grits. I reserved a booth through open table which they actually had ready for our group. I find many restaurants don't pay attention to your special requests when noted in open table. So loved it."

  • "Excellent wait staff. I was with a rather demanding group, and our waiter (Chuck?) didn't flinch at any single request. Food could not have been better. If you go to Charleston, this is THE place for brunch."

  • "When you enter High Cotton the reception staff is friendly and welcoming. The restaurant decor is reminiscent of a gentleman's club decoration. Nicely appointed. Our drinks were made to perfection and warmly presented by our waiter. Appetizers were good - a seasonal salad with strawberries and hazelnuts. the swordfish entree was absolutely moist and tasty. Unfortunately the tuna entree was not as perfect. We were so full that there was no room for one of the wonderful looking desserts. I recommend trying this little gem of a restaurant in Charleston."

  • "Went here for Father's Day and was not disappointed. The food was beyond expectation and the service was superb. Our Server was prompt, respectful and certainly knew her menu items and wines. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a wonderful place for date night or anyone looking for that perfect steak or pork chop. The Charleston Cocktail is a MUST if you plan to enjoy an adult beverage or two. I will definitely be back."

  • "Very disappointed , was recommend , and feel that both food and service was way over rated, it just seemed to have no heart. These statements are not with some validity as I have traveled all over the US,in sale of my product, spanining thirty years."

  • "We celebrated my wife's 30th birthday this past weekend. We arrived half an hour early but still seated immediately, staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable in the menu. Our server was fantastic. I cant say enough about the food, I ordered the scallops and even the broccoli was cooked to perfection. Excellent wine list and cocktails are made nice and stiff. Timing was impeccable, the server gave us plenty of time to enjoy our drinks before bringing out the food. Well worth the money, although this isn't somewhere we can afford to eat more than two or three times per year, its a great place to enjoy company and create a memorable evening."

  • "We came to charleston to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. High Cotton was recommended to is by a friend who lives on the area. Everything was perfect for our dinner. The food was amazing. Our waitress was awesome. She was super friendly and conscientious. She was very attentive. We would definitely come back to High Cotton and recommend it to others."

  • "Had brunch last Sunday and it was awesome. We had the crab cakes benedict and the oysters florentine and both were superb. The ambiance is classic Charleston and was topped off with a jazz band in the bar area. The bonus was probably the best bloody mary I've ever had in a restaurant. Highly recommended."

  • "We went for our anniversary dinner on June 8. We shared the picnic plate and that was fine. We had the vegetarian plate and 8 oz beef tenderloin. The veggie plate was disgusting! An over abundance of veggies were crammed onto the plate in an ugly way. And the taste was awful! No seasoning or sauce at all. I sampled one bite of each veggie before giving up. Everything had a disgusting charred taste. My husband'a steak was a poor quality cut of meat with the same burnt and charred flavor. He, too, was unable to finish it. The side of potatoes was also undercooked! I was so disappointed that I didn't even order dessert, which is always a must for me. When we got home I had to brush my teeth twice to get rid of the burnt taste. Never again!"
