Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived promptly at 1pm and in hindsight we should have left when we still were still waiting at 1:50 for our table. At 2pm we were finally seated. Our waitress was too busy to take our drink orders or discuss the menu initially and when she returned to take the drink and meal orders (10 minutes later) it turned out you were out of several items, one being the salmon appetizer which is part of the reason we decided on High Cotton to begin with. After our orders were placed, we waited and waited and waited for drinks to come. No drinks. Twenty minutes later the appetizers arrived and then 5 minutes after that the drinks. Who has to wait for 25 minutes to get a glass of champaign? "

  • "The Charleston dining scene has been evolving over the past few years and High Cotton has shown the ability to keep pace with all newcomers. They do it the old-fashioned way - fine food, impeccable service and elegant, yet comfortable atmosphere. We found the staff very knowledgeable and always attentive. Unlike some restaurants in Charleston you are able to take a group here and everyone will be able to find something on the menu that suits their tastes."

  • "Wow, busy place. The crowded lobby made it difficult to wait for a table. Seats in the bar were being used for brunch. Our table was ready 45 minutes after our reservation. Could have used another bartender or bar back. Food was good but the wait took its toll."

  • "Surprised that it took nearly an hour past our reservation to get a table, but after that frustration the food was great. Still thinking about the fried oysters. "

  • "We frequent High Cotton and chose to go there Easter BECAUSE of the many great experiences we've had but brunch was a big disappointment. Service was slow yet they didn't seem overly busy. One appetizer came out missing ingredients & another came out uncooked. The dough was still in batter form when you cut into the pastry. We sent them back & another batch was the same. Eggs benedict had shells in it & English muffins were soggy & untoasted. I left hungry & disappointed. When asked if everything was ok in kitchen because as regulars we know they have better service, we were tritely advised "We have over 500 covers today." Thanks for making us feel like just another number. "

  • "For many years we have been going to High Cotton for Easter brunch. My order was very basic: eggs Benedict. After an extremely long wait ( we were amongst the earlier guests) my order arrived cold, under cooked atop a raw English muffin and some very sad looking ham, and a dried out brioche. Not wanting to send my order back I decided that it was absolutely necessary as my meal was not edible. I noticed that diner at next table had sent her order back. I'm not certain what she ordered. Perhaps it's time to rethink our choice of dining establishments. There is certainly no lack of excellent, new choices as well as great tried and true ones."

  • "I was really looking forward to the meal given the rave reviews. Went for brunch and location/ambience was great. However, the food was oversalted and practically inedible. Even their biscuits were mediocre! Server took back my nearly untouched meal with no questions/comments. This restaurant would not last long in NY. "

  • "Treated us to complementary glass of champainge to start the meal. Attentive service and excellent food. A favorite in Charleston."

  • "Had high expectations for this restaurant but we were disappointed. While the salads were very tasty, the entrees were just mediocre. The halibut entree was served with a broth that tasted odd and one end of the fish was cold and the other was steaming hot. It had to be sent back to be heated and by the time it came back to the table the other diners were almost through eating. The duck entree was flavorful but gritty. The soft shell crab was okay but nothing special. We were in the back room away from the music but it still was a little hard to hear. If you do go, would try to sit in the front room which had a better vibe. "

  • "While staff kind this did not compensate for food being cold and famed syrup for the French toast not being served. By far not worth the price. "

  • "After much anticipation, we were very disappointed with the food, it lacked flavor."

  • "We went here for brunch. The ambience is great with a southern charm. Service was great; the server was very knowledgeable each of the plates. Tables receive a basket of cornbread before dinner. That was good. The bacon glazed doughnut holes were the star of the show for me (appetizer). The ambrosia (appetizer) was just fruit on freshly whipped cream. Eating a plate of whipped cream is a bit heavy for an appetizer. The chicken and waffles was great (chicken had sausage in the middle; nice touch), but the waffle could have been lighter and fluffier. The low country huevos rancheros was OK. The pork wasn't smokey and there was no spice. The server brought out homemade serrano sauce. It was still not that spicy."

  • "Second visit in a long time, always pleasurable, waiter knowledgable, wine and food... Took special interest in us...food choices very good. Not just the pa usual South Carolina fair...enjoyed active ambience...flavor and prep great..."

  • "Crab bisque was watered milk butter and no crab. Un appealing in appearance, flavor and substance. Barbecue lamb was full of gristle and fat. Only two bites were eatable. The cassoulet, though delicious had half a cup of fat. The crab cakes and Cobb salad were enjoyable. Restaurant should provide sugar substitutes. We were told only sugar was available."

  • "This place had the best brunch with a great jazz band. The band was the same band that has been there for a few years, and the band is amazing..New Orleans style music, great energy from the band members, and we specifically go here to see them play..the music makes the brunch! I recommend sitting in the bar area--much better ambiance, more laid back feel and better views of the band."

  • "The menu here was limited however the food options we selected were very good. The only annoyance was the disappearance of the waitress who rarely checked to see if we needed anything. This erodes the value of the meal as it was a bit pricey for the service we received. Not sure I would recommend or return."

  • "High Cotton was one of the first favorite restaurants when we first started vacationing in Charleston area years ago. Lots of changes and lots of things stay the same. The ambiance is wonderful. Service is fabulous. Menu has shortened significantly from the extensive listing that used to make for difficult decision making but all in all still a must do while in town."

  • "Food was good, our waiter seemed new but was excellent and very personable. I had the pork chop which was excellent, the fingerling potatos were boring, bland not much going on there. For desert we had a mini apple pie which was delicious and bread pudding which was terrible (dry and bland). Kind of odd to have such extremes in the desert quality. I thought it was unusual that the pictures on their website show a fairly informal environment but the area we sat in was much more formal than we expected. Food was good, service was the highlight."

  • "The place gives you a real feel of the historic south. The food and service were both top notch. I would make it a must on our next visit to Charleston."

  • "We love to sit at the bar and eat. The bartenders were knowledgeable about the menu. We had two great plates and loved the food and atmosphere. Live music, but wasn't so loud as to not be able to have a conversation. I would recommend this restaurant to all!"

  • "My wife and I highly enjoyed this restaurant. We were visiting from out of town and came at the recommendation of a friend. Eat here and you will not be disappointed . This is truly a fine dining experience you will not forget. We enjoyed our cocktails, appetizer, dinner, and deserts. The two of us got out of here for $120 plus tip. It was definitely an expensive meal, but well worth it for a special time. It was a very charming restaurant. We enjoyed our bacon wrapped rabbit loin served on a bed of pimento cheese grits."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and were very pleased. Our server was outstanding, the food was great as well as the bottle of wine we had for the occasion. We were even given a wonderful dessert for our special night. Only thing that was weird was when we arrived the hostess didn't have our reservation that we made online. I showed her the confirmation email on my phone with correct date and time, then they found us in the book for the following night...I think they eventually found the correct email reservation. Other than that, everything was perfect. We will be back, but might call to make a reservation instead of the online option. Thanks."

  • "Our family of four really enjoyed our dinner here. My husband and I both ordered fish entrees and were completely impressed by them -- fantastic flavors and very fresh."

  • "The food was delivered to our table with such speed that we were saying we were having "fast food" when should have been having a nice relaxing dinner. Once we ordered, the appetizer was on our table within 3 minutes. When they cleared those plates, the entree was brought within 1 minute. Meanwhile, the host kept coming into the dining room with an iPad, looking at each table and checking things off. He obviously was keeping track of how fast each table was progressing toward turning the table over. I'm sure many restaurants keep track of the same thing, but in a subtle manner so you don't even realize it is happening. The iPad checker, in addition to the fast delivery of food made us feel very rushed."

  • "This restaurant is in a great trendy neighborhood but is not overcrowded or loud. I had a delicious salmon dish, cooked perfectly, with a tasty lemon sauce. Side orders were also very good, and provided a selection to suit everyone's taste. Our waiter was courteous and friendly and provided excellent service. This was the best of all the meals I had in Charleston. It's on my list of top restaurants in the country."

  • "We went twice because it was highly recommended and a local wanted to meet there. The food and service is good. The clam chowder is some of the best you could get anywhere. Very tasty and fresh . The cornbread is sweet and moist. delicious Kale Caesar was okay but the fresh flounder was quite tasty. It's a good spot to try when in the city"

  • "Great food. High point - menu changes periodically with interesting food combinations. Wide variety of dining adventures including lamb, rabbit, more than one fish choice and steak variations. Keeps the restaurant as a fresh experience."

  • "Service was poor. Had to wait for entree that was then cold and undercooked. Waiter missed an opportunity to wonder why half of meal was left."

  • "If you are looking for a place for a special occasion or just a nice meal, then you can't go wrong with High Cotton. The food and the service are consistently excellent. Reservations are recommended as they are always busy, but there is some seating at and around the bar. You can be dressed casually or go with a jacket and tie and not be out of place. I would not wear jeans. The entree prices are on the high side, but the menu emphasizes local ingredients and everything is fresh. There is an extensive wine list if you wish to purchase a bottle and there are wines available by the glass although that list is more limited."
