  • "This really is a lovely restaurant; part of the quite fine hotel, The Umstead in Cary. We were spending a quiet weekend away and enjoyed the hotel, and particularly the service in the lounge prior to dinner. The ambiance at Heron's is like the hotel, quiet and refined. The food is gourmet, and well prepared. It is very expensive. Taking all of that into consideration, my only complaint was that the servers were a bit "too" well trained. It became somewhat a joke after a while as the plates were being meticulously aligned with the silverware, which was also realinged with the napkins. Our waiter frankly came across as arrogant, which was a bit odd and perhaps just a personality issue."

  • "Heron's is such a special place. Right from arrival at the hotel, one is made to feel a treasured guest. Service in Heron's is amazing, very professional yet warm and welcoming. Our wait staff was so attentive to our needs. The food is amazing. Presentation is beautiful and every element on the plate was described by the person delivering the course. For my entrée I opted for the spring lamb and it was the best have had anywhere. The executive chef was a semi-finalist for a James Beard award this year...what more can I say! We absolutely enthusiastically recommend Heron's."

  • "We have been to this restaurant many times. This time, we had a waiter who appeared too stiff and rigid. He lacked attention to detail to simply ask if I would have liked another drink, but asked my husband 5 times if he wanted a refill on his coffee. He did not forget to ask the lady across the table from me if she wanted another drink. We had the same drinks. We have a child with nut allergies. When asked if the cookies he ordered had nuts, the waiter simply showed me the kids menu rather than answering the question. I think his actions were inconsistent with the service which we have received in the past. We will not go back. And if we do, we will request another waiter."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch at Heron's on a generally spectacular day weather-wise, so we were able to take advantage of their outdoor dining. The food was really good - I had a perfect lobster roll -- plenty of lobster, not too much mayo. The service was great with a terrific wine recommendation. A great place to go to celebrate a special occasion."

  • "You will always have an amuse then great bread selection and butter. Loved the quail appetizer, the venison was amazing and the fish dishes are always great. Unfortunately I had the fillet with marrow sauce and it was over salted and a tiny bit mealy. This is not to say it was bad because it was quite good, just not as good as the others mentioned. The risotto tends to be mushy and salty. Desserts are amazing but the chocolate was way better than the butterscotch pudding which was dry. With the right choices this is a 5 the mixed drinks and wine are amazing: scotch and tacilla A+"

  • "My experience was amazing, I'm probably more picky than the average customers as a chef my self! We try the degustation menu choice of the Chef with the wine as well. The choice of the wine was excellent! The presentation of each dishes are gorgeous! The quality of the food was okay! The temperature was not always what they should be ... The choice of the different dishes on this specific menu was not at the level of a 5 stars restaurant, I will expect more originality, and more quality products. The dessert was very disappointed! Not at the level of the rest of food!"

  • "Maybe I am a restaurant snob, but this restaurant didn't impress me. The only thing that "wowed" me was the presentation of the food.I admit, it was beautiful! I was very turned off when the server told me I had to order all my 4 courses at one time. When I spend $300.00 dollars on a meal, I should not have to order all 4 courses at one time. Also, did my server really have to write down my 3 courses? Last time I saw a server write down my order was at Olive Garden! Never in a 5 star restaurant. The only thing that was memorable for me was the Caesar Salad. It was presented uniquely and the flavors were fabulous. The desserts were a hot mess! By far the worst desserts I have ever had! Glad I tried Herons...but not going back!"

The quality of the food, the preparation and presentation of the menu selections, the service, the décor, and the beautiful scenic views make this restaurant a winner in every way. For this visit I selected the salmon and my guest selected the lobster roll--both prepared beautifully. We shared the warm bread pudding with Escazu chocolate, and ice cream with hint of coffee, and this was outstanding dessert creation."

  • "The gluten-free menu in some ways seems extensive, but was actually quite limited, especially for someone who doesn't eat red meat. I had hosted a business lunch at Herons the previous week and asked about gluten-free options. I was happy to see a gluten-free menu, plus a comment about a special gluten-free bread that was served. Based on this, I took my wife to Herons for a special meal, and found out that the gluten-free bread contains bits of pork, so she couldn't eat it. The salad and soup lunch for her ended up being a big disappointment."

We had two very attentive waiters but many more members of the staff also helped to make the evening special. Low lighting and fresh flowers added to the romance. I like the way the menu is set up with courses and you just select whether you want 3 courses or 4 courses. The set price is determined by how many course you select."

  • "Heron's was again a very good choice for our "date" night away from the kids. The food was skillfully prepared, but it tended to be a little weirder than usual, with unnecessary things not highlighted on the menu such as a curry paste on the carrot cake (and really no cake on the carrot cake either). The fois gras terrine was outstanding and alone worth the price of admission (which has gone up significantly with their new format). Some of the other offerings were good but not great again because of the reaches by the chef to make unique choices. All in all it is still outstanding, but maybe not far and away the best restaurant in the Triangle any more. However, we will return when the new spring menu is created."

This was the third time we have tried the tasting menu and each time it gets better and better. The flavors are delicious and all of the chef's deserve a huge compliment.
