Diner Reviews
  • "Given the price, Herons needs to be a very memorable meal. The good news - they absolutely deliver. We went for a birthday (they didn't know), and every aspect of the meal was as it should be. The service: friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, helpful, precise, professional. Had nice conversations about both the food and the wine. Wine list: fantastic. Lots of by the glass and 1/2 bottle options. Food: Delightfully good. I'll remember the corn custard with buttermilk foam and truffle sauce for years. I can still taste and savor it. The seared scallop my wife had was similarly superb. The Halibut main course is excellent, and the dark chocolate dessert paired with Dandelion Vineyards PX 30 - wow. Very highly recommended & special."

  • "Everything was absolutely superb! The food was absolutely scrumptious. The service was exceptional. The surroundings are so serene. We walked away in such a peaceful and "full" of so many good things. I highly recommend Heron's!"

  • "We've gone to Heron's over the years for special occasions and always loved it. This time the food seemed to have slipped a little."

  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary at this "fine dining," expensive restaurant. The restaurant is beautiful, with great ambiance. The appetizers, main entrees, and desserts all disappointed us. Portions were small (expected), and the combination of ingredients in our dishes did not produce a good taste experience. There was no WOW for anything on the menu that we ordered."

  • "What an experience, everything was delicious and service was the best I have ever experienced."

  • "I dine at Herons 6-8 times (or more) a year and am always impressed with the exceptional dining experience. This is great place for taking out of town guests, as well as celebrating special occasions with family and friends--or just going to treat yourself. Food choices are best of the season, prepared beautifully, and served like art. The bread basket always has at least 3 delightful choices. Sparkling or still water is offered--no extra charge for the sparkling water. Staff and servers are gracious and professional from the entry of the hotel, on to the gift shop, and in the dining room. And, the views of the gorgeous landscape are in sight for enjoying for while you dine inside or outside. Highly recommended."

  • "Decided to celebrate the anniversary at Herons. Paid $250 for a 3 course meal with wine and tip for a delicious evening hosted with extreme attention to detail in a beautiful setting. Only drawback was being seated in a high traffic area. My first course was a carrot gazpacho and I had never tasted such a delightful and surprising mix of flavors and textures. I will never forget it. The evening was paced just right and the serving sizes were generous. Lots of choices for a prix fixe approach. It was a lovely evening and would recommend it for that special date night."

  • "My daughter and I had been to Heron's before but it was my husband's first time and we all thoroughly enjoyed our brunch there. The food was excellent, as usual, and we went for a walk around the lake afterward and that was the perfect way to top off our visit. Our waitress brought us a small dessert with a chocolate label saying Happy Anniversay at the end of the meal. Highly recommend Heron's."

  • "We celebrated my son's high school graduation with brunch. Two of the guys ordered the burger, while the rest of us chose more traditional breakfast/brunch dishes. The servings were large enough for us to take some home. Everything was delicious, and the service was impeccable! Highlights were the bacon and potato casserole and the donuts with vanilla bean mascarpone cream. Although Heron's is thought of as being a higher-end/expensive restaurant, brunch was very reasonably priced. This makes brunch a perfect opportunity to experience both the amazing food and the excellent service that are trademarks of Heron's and the Umstead."

  • "I took two customers and a colleague to dinner at Herron's. The customers were well traveled 'foodies'. The food, wine and service were all excellent, but the nicest part was the relaxing ambience. We had all come from a conference in a very loud, noisy part of New York, and the ability to relax, enjoy and talk in normal conversational tones was nothing short of therepeutic. I have recommended to everyone I know likely to be in the Raleigh area and will continue to do so."

  • "The Heron is a bit of NYC tucked away in the lush greenery of North Carolina. The quality of the food is uneven though from superb cold cucumber soup to a so-so dessert. The excellent wines help compensate however. "

  • "We have dined at Herons numerous times and the food has always been amazing. Small portions, but amazing! Sunday Brunch is a family favorite! The service, quite frankly, is hit or miss. Overall, highly recommend. "

  • "the atmosphere and the scene were great. Breads and dessert are particularly tasty. The "Ambassador" lady, Jean, was so nice. It was a great experience!"

  • "Brunch on the back patio was really nice... very picturesque, serene, relaxing.... The Warm Donuts were not that great, but the rest of the meal was just right. Highly recommend for romantic meal. "

  • "I paid for my parent's celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary and they were well taken care of. As my mom said on facebook "It was a wonderful and delicious meal! The restaurant has a gorgeous and luxurious atmosphere. The servers swept in and out like on "little cat's feet" with each course, which was presented so beautifully!" Thank you for working as a team - concierge, maitre de and staff members. The flowers from your florist delighted my mom and the service dining was excellent."

  • "This was our first visit to Herons and it was wonderful! We couldn't decide where to sit and they were so accommodating! Atmosphere was formal but not uptight. They were very helpful with the menu and very knowledgeable when asked a question about it. I had the wine paring with my meal and it was spot on! The wait staff was great and the food delicious!! They even made us a chocolate with Happy Anniversary on it...special touches to make a special occasion perfect. We will definitely go back again!!"

  • "The staff at the restaurant confirmed the reservation twice and greeted me by name throughout the hotel through my stay. The attention to detail for the arrangement of the table, presentation of food and special requests was appreciated and the food at the breakfasts were fantastic. I hope I have an opportunity to return for dinner and take advantage of their extensive wine list, wonderful atmosphere and delicious meals. "

  • "Colleagues and I came here for a special occasion lunch. The food and service were excellent, as always. I was particularly fond of the potato dumpling appetizer and the parfait dessert. The amuse bouche was delightful as well."

  • "A friend, who I hadn't seen in 15 years, and I dined at Heron's on a Monday evening. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience there. The menu was appealing, and our food was served promptly ans was delicious. what stood out, though, was the outstanding, courteous, and non-pretentious service. It is so nice to be seated, and for the server NOT say, "And how are you guys tonight?" I will certainly return to dine here. 5 stars!"

  • "Herons is a world class restaurant (as is the hotel, The Umstead). So often I eat in an expensive, highly rated establishment and leave disappointed. On this night, I found that Herons delivered in all areas. There were no disappointments here. Expect to spend ~300 for two if each has a couple of drinks/wine. You do have to order a full three or four course meal so if you are not up to such you might try the Bar and Grill just beside it. You can order A La Carte there and the food is also very good."

  • "Had lunch. Food was excellent (I had the trout for my entree and the strawberries w/ maple cream for my dessert), but the service was even better! The staff were attentive but not intrusive, and definitely not snooty; there clearly conveyed that they were happy to be there and to be providing great service. Reminded me of being on an Oceania cruise."

  • "Wonderful yet again. Love this restaurant. Food, service, selection of wine all outstanding. Very different and beautiful presentation of entree's and appetizers. I entertain all the time and this is by far my favorite restaurant. Beats out NY, Philadelphia and New Jersey dining! "

  • "Having a 3-4 course option choice was great and the first two courses and wine pairings were outstanding, the entrée/main courses were good, but not outstanding. The setting is lovely and sophisticated and the service was cordial and attentive at all times. The portions were spot on for all three courses. The sommelier was a gem and her knowledge and delivery were superb and a real highlight of the evening."

  • "It was my husband's birthday and though I didn't mention it during the reservation the waiter was attentive enough to catch it during our conversation and bring out a little something with the bill! The food was absolutely stunning and how it was served; very very unique in every way. I was watching the cooks through the window that opens into the dining area and was wondering where you learn to cook like this ... Soooo tasty! Afterwards we walked the grounds so prestigious and beautiful and every one was so attentive. "

  • "Dining at Herons is truly a memorable experience. The ambiance is best in NC and almost like a fine gallery. The food is as good as it gets. Oh, and you pay for it. But I would be surprised if many think it isn't a good value for special occasions "
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "Quite simply...amazing! Everyone must experience a truly wonderful dinner at Herons!"

  • "This really is a lovely restaurant; part of the quite fine hotel, The Umstead in Cary. We were spending a quiet weekend away and enjoyed the hotel, and particularly the service in the lounge prior to dinner. The ambiance at Heron's is like the hotel, quiet and refined. The food is gourmet, and well prepared. It is very expensive. Taking all of that into consideration, my only complaint was that the servers were a bit "too" well trained. It became somewhat a joke after a while as the plates were being meticulously aligned with the silverware, which was also realinged with the napkins. Our waiter frankly came across as arrogant, which was a bit odd and perhaps just a personality issue."
