Heirloom Restaurant is the product of Chef Clark Barlowe's North Carolina farm community upbringing and years of global travel. All ingredients that are brought in to Heirloom come from NC farms or producers, prompting a style best described as: Locally Sourced, Globally Inspired. This style of farm to table dining at Heirloom extends far beyond simply the food. From the Cocktail list focused strictly on NC distilleries, the wine list made up completely of NC vintages, the beer list sourcing only local craft breweries from Charlotte, NC, to the house music supplied from NC artists Heirloom is North Carolina's restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The staff was good but had some miscommunications. I usually just attribute that to having a packed house on restaurant week. No big deal and they straightened everything out. Also, the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The FOOD was great and everything was prepared with the precision and passion that you want to see when paying as much as it was. I highly recommend this place for dates with the SO and for going out with clients."

  • "I really wanted to love this place but left disappointed. We went on a Tuesday during restaurant week, and the restaurant was maybe half full but still pretty busy. However, it appeared that there were only two servers, one back wait, and one hostess on the floor. The hostess was also delivering food, so getting seated was kind of a mess (table not even cleared). We had issues not getting bread (had to ask after seeing it on another table) and having enough silverware/water. Also, I get the idea of not having s&p on the table, but the food should be properly seasoned in order for this to work. A real positive was our server, he was awesome! Helped us navigate the NC-only cocktail/wine list wonderfully. I just wish he had more support."

  • "We went for our anniversary. Everything was very nice. The food was delicious and we will be going back."

  • "This was a disappointing experience. The service was very disorganized and the wait staff were not coordinated. They even acknowledged the poor service without us saying anything. The food was very mediocre and the taste was bland. The meat was tough and not seasoned. The heirloom tomatoes were tasteless. The only bright spot was the dessert. Sorry, but they did not meet even minimum standards despite all the publicity."

  • "The food was excellent and the presentation was lovely. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would enjoy returning for dinner again soon."

  • "From the moment we walked in we knew we were at the right place. Our server meg was very helpful and never let a glass run empty. Our food arrived in a timely manner and perfectly executed! We will be coming back to heirloom again and again!"

  • "Everything about Heirloom was simply fantastic. Food was deliciously and creatively prepared from all local sourced ingredients, down to the wine and beer list. Only thing not raised or grown in Carolina is the coffee, which is roasted in NoDa."

  • "Food was very good, however the service was really bad. We went on Saturday restaurant week. Reservation for 7:45, got seated at 8:30. Waitress started conversation with we are busy so it's going to be slow. My wife is a vegetarian so she called in advance and spoke to the chef. None of her courses came the same time as the others. We had a table of 5. Just not a vegetarian friendly menu. Even looking past that the service was extremely slow and the waitress was very disengaged with our table and we were spending plenty of money on wine and drinks. Bad thing is we live within walking distance and we are very weary of going back. We arrived at 7:45 and left at 11pm. Great food but didn't feel the appreciation of our business in the staff."

  • "From the outside, you won't be overwhelmed. But the interior of the restaurant has an interesting rustic feel. The food was quite flavorful except for the pork belly ironically. I expected that dish to be the most flavorful of the night, however it was easily the worst. Quite dry and and lacking seasoning. In retrospect, we should have sent it back. Conversely, the tomato salad, chicken dumplings, and angus filet all delivered with layered, complex tastes. We will return."

  • "The meals were excellent. Food was terrific. The chef went out of his way to provide an excellent vegetarian meal for our friends. Service still needs to be refined e.g. we had to ask for drinks, no extra bread was offered, a little slow (2+ hours for dinner). Then ambience is a work in process e.g. need to work on the lighting, replace a sofa with the hostess station and a screen, put some plants in the planters outside the entrance."

  • "We recently just began trying to be more aware of where our food comes from. This was a great place. The food was phenomenal!"

  • "This experience did not earn the "fine dining label"... the presentation of each course was inviting but the palate was bland. the white table cloth was covered with paper like a bistro does...the glassware was somewhat primitive...the eclectic genre was accomplished...but I expected more from all the hype....it fell short of our expectations."

  • "I was overall pleased with my experience at Heirloom. We where there during restaurant week, so we choice our meal from a menu with four course. For the most part everything had a clean, earthy, modestly seasoned taste, GOOD! I would definitely go back to see what's on the regular menu."

  • "The service was very poor. We would ask for something. The waiter would never return. Asked for an extra piece of 1x1 of bread. Told No. They didn't bake enough and had more reservations to come. Asked for sweetener for the tea. Told no. There isn't any. Asked for salt and pepper. Told no. There is only one salt shake in the entire rest and it was being used. Fit the price of this place this is not acceptable."

  • "If a restaurant is going to participate in Queen's Feast, it needs to be ready. I dislike sitting next to another couple close enough that you can't help but overhear their conversation so that started the evening off badly. The service was extremely slow. We waited 15 minutes for cocktails after 3 visits from our waitress to say they didn't have certain vodkas, etc. I did not blame the waitress as she did her very best to keep us informed about what was happening. The crux of the matter was that the place was understaffed. The bread was delicious. The sausage was tasty. The steak was tough. Blueberry dessert was fresh and fancy. If I compare this to our dinner the next night where the restaurant was prepared, this experience was fair."

  • "This was our second visit to Heirloom and it was disappointing. The tilapia was watery and when cut the liquid ran over the slate serving plate onto the table cloth. The pork shop was mostly fat and the presentation lack any color with beige slaw and brown pork with brown potatoes. The mushroom appetizer had much more crostini bread that mushrooms. Portions seemed to be smaller. Finally a $25 corkage fee seems high when NC wines are the only choice available."

  • "We have eaten here twice and both time we had high hopes! Both times it fell a little short. I have no question that the chef is talented, his presentation is spot on. The food is creative, especially considering that the menu is less than 24 hours old each day. However, the food is always a bit under seasoned and thus lacks a little something. The service has been a problem on both occasions. Although everyone is nice our waitress on both occasions seems to disappear. The first night we went was just after the opening and they were busy, but not on a Wed nite. I will say the bartender was quick to step in and help when she could. Like an old heirloom we hope they will polish it up and dust away the kinks to bring out all it's potential."

  • "I've been twice now and both occasions have been excellent. This NC focused farm to table restaurant is just what we needed. The chef takes pride in creating his menu each day based on what is in season and available."

  • "food was good but not great; portions were small and prices were high. Maybe we hit an off night, but the service was not good at all. We need a nice restaurant in this area, but unfortunately, this is not it."

  • "Heirloom is a true gem and a welcome addition to the area. We had the 7 course tasting menu so we could sample a bit of everything and it was oustanding! Service was prompt and everyone was very pleasant. They are a true NC farm to table restuarant. Everything right down to the wine and spirits is NC raised. The vegatables were grown in the restuarant's own garden and they even bee boxes on the roof to make their own honey. We very much look forward to returning. In addition to the tasting menu, they offer a regular menu and a bar menu. They also serve brunch on the weekends and are dog friendly. I hear they serve homemade dog treats for your pooch. The menu changes daily and is tweeted out by the chef - what a great concept!"

  • "All was good, but our server seemed unprepared for our questions about the menu offerings and seemed distracted at times. I think this could be avoided in the future if the chef would take time to prepare his service staff on his menu offerings of the day."

  • "Chef Clark Barlow's resume cannot fail to impress, French Laundry, El Bulli, and other notable stops around the country and the world. He's brought home his ecclectic experience and world travels to Charlotte. At Heirloom, you can clearly see the influences of global flavors and molecular gastronomy, but you also see his deep pride and love for North Carolina. This is not chi-chi food. It is real. It is his heritage. It is his home. Thomas Wolfe said "You Can't Go Home Again". He was wrong. Clark is home and he's brought a wealth of experience to share with all of us. His flavors and ingredients are purely local and purely Carolinian. His skills are world class. Welcome Home Clark!"

  • "At Heirloom, they care about their food and where it comes from and how it was grown/raised and they are happy to share that with you. All locally sourced (including the wine and beer), all delicious and put together in fantastic pairings. The setting is romantic rustic and the attention from the staff is spot on - not too much, not too little. Highly recommend this gem, it's super easy to get to so don't let the out-of-the-way location be a deterrent. Looking forward to my next visit. "

  • "The dessert was amazing, and I enjoyed the pork shoulder, the rabbit, the liver pudding and the bread. However, I had a large party, four of whom ordered entrees and two vegetarians. Very limited choices for the vegetarians. We dld not know it would take 3 hours for the tasting menu and either we all should have ordered it or all single entrees. The portions were very small on the entrees and when one person wanted another roll, he was told each additional one would cost 50 cents extra, which seems odd for very expensive dishes."

  • "Great concept and beautiful presentation. We waited over 30 min in the parking lot, not sure if we were in the right place. Once we decide to enter we were pleasantly surprise. The food was great and very fresh!!! Not many people know about it so the waiter had time to tell us about the farms where they get there meat, honey, etc. very interesting and you feel like you are supporting local farms and getting a great meal. Waiters were great, friendly, and anticipated our need!"

  • "We dined at Heirloom for the first time this past weekend. We love the concept of all of the food being sourced from North Carolina, including all of the wine and beer selections. Chef brings a good amount of talent and experience to the kitchen and I think he has the tools to make the place a real success. The key is to get people to know that he's there and what he is doing. The location is challenging because it isn't a place where someone would just be driving past and decide to stop in. I for one intend to spread the word! I'm really looking forward to seeing what this place can do when the real "farm fresh" season comes into full swing!"

  • "This was our second time dining here and we were blown away again by the caliber of food and how the menu changed. Service was good, not overbearing and thoughtfully paced. Very accomidating to food allergies. We additionally found out from the chef that there were daily bar specials ($6-8)!! Yeah a way to feed my hunger for this place without breaking the bank."

  • "Food was great except for all the garlic.... please cut back! 3 out of 4 people in our party could not eat the accompaniments with the entree because of this ... A bit disappointing to be unable to eat part ot an otherwise excellent meal."

  • "This is a great restaurant and nice alternative to going downtown for a nice, upscale feel without going to a chain restuaranf. Service was excellent, staff was knowledge about every meal, and great price for the food choices."

  • "I liked this place. We are big fans of Plaza Midwood & NoDa. Didn't expect food this unique in Coulwood. Everything was delicious. Although I wanted lamb (ran out) I had the beef....it was good. The serving staff amazing! Courteous & knowledgable. The only dislike is the the carpet on floor."

  • "Chef Clark Barlowe is truly a visionary. He's filling a gap that's been widening in the Charlotte food scene in recent years. While in the Uptown area, there are several options for great restaurants (Halcyon, King's Kitchen, McNinch House), those on the suburban edges of our city have had little choice in finding creative, local and innovative meals. The menu was simple, sourced 100% locally, and beautifully executed. Service was extraordinary! I was even impressed with the Cab Franc from N. Carolina despite having lived in Sonoma County, CA and being quite a wine snob for years. Way to go Heirloom!"

  • "Great food but very out of the way location. Restaurant was too large & no atmosphere...looked like an old Western Sizzler. Disappointed in the wine list from North Carolina only. When we return, we will definitely bring our own wine."

  • "We've dined at Heirloom several times and have enjoyed it each time. The food is wonderful, all sourced from North Carolina, and the menu changes frequently. The desserts are amazing. The atmosphere is quiet, cozy, and warm and the service is wonderful (Jason is our favorite)."

  • "Love, love, love the 'farm to table' concept, but was disappointed with the food. We got two of the seafood options and both were very bland. The service was on point, very attentive to detail and well versed on the menu. I think this restaurant is worth a second try, especially since it is still evolving, but for the price, I think the food will need to be more flavorful for this restaurant to survive!"

  • "Second visit to Heirloom, this one was a vast improvement from the first. Recommend the Chef's Tasting menu to sample most of the items. Adventurous samplings from Beef Brains (excellent!), Rabbit Loins (glad we got it before they ran out) and an interesting spin on Fish and Chips (Fish Ribs and fried Vegetable Chips) . Menu changes with the availability of local and regional produce. Interesting dishes, expertly prepared. Service was better and more knowledgeable about the menu and the NC wines being offered. Staff suggested a wine that paired very nicely with the dinner. Outside looks a little rough, don't be put off, the inside is inviting and nicely done. Good place to try something new, Chef Clark knows how to prepare it right."

  • "Everything served is from NC: all the food, all the beers, and all the wines. It's all fresh and expertly prepared. It is definitely worth dining here. And don't forget dessert. We will go again."

  • "I had read about this little gem, but still didn't quite know what to expect....is there REALLY a fine dining establishment in Coulwood? The answer is YES! The decor is ecclectic (our table had a tree stump as it's base) farm shabby chic. The menu is described as hyper local and changes day to day. It is on par with any high end restaurant downtown or in the South Park area. Please frequent this establishment we need to see it survive!! I made a reservation and noted that I required gluten free meals. The chef called me less than an hour later ensured me that would be no problem, they can adjust the menu easily and asked if I might want dessert? If so, he would have his pastry chef create 2 choices for me. Now, that's customer service!"
