A word from Hayes Street Grill
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

  • "Now I can say I've been to this SF institution. Location and timing brought us, as it did many others who packed the place before a show. The french fries, which I didn't think I wanted (but I didn't like the alternative), were fantastic - tasty and HOT! My fish was delcious and cooked perfectly. I was not so keen on having the "sauce on the side," however. And the creme brulee was ice cold. I prefer a shallower serving and the warmth that comes from browning them to order, instead of the production-line, pre-made serving we received."

  • "Ambiance: LOUD - lip reading skills are necessary to communicate with waiter; OLD - my wife and I were celebrating her 57th birthday, and she was the youngest guest in the place; SNOOTY - until you're seated they definitely make you feel like "you're lucky we let you in". An air that everyone else goes there every day; like a club that you don't belong to. Food: the kitchen is EXPERT at preparing sea food; interesting wine list, prices not overblown. Service: professional and not obsequious Caveat Gustor: I tried to use a prepaid $25 AmEx reward card to pay part of the bill; they brought it back saying that the card had been refused, I put the entire bill on Visa; next day I checked online and the gift card was zeroed by a payment to HSG."

Although we made clear we were going to a performance, our waiter didn't provide the type of service you expect from this establishment. I know it must be hard to rush things through every night for performances, but 2 weeks ago, I had a great experience and I ordered the same meal. Maybe his table assignment made it hard to keep up."

  • "I really wanted to like this place. I've known about it for years, but never stepped in until last week. The food was ok. Both fish dishes we ordered, salmon and sword fish was cooked as ordered. Food and wine were ok, nothing special. The service on the other hand, could have been better. They made us feel rushed and non-engaging. This place is better if you're going to pre-show dinner, not a date. For me the best thing about this place was the noise level. We heard each other talk."

  • "This has been a regular of ours for years. The dining room needs to be freshened up but the food is still dependably delicious - the best place in town for just a nice piece of grilled fish. The staff is great, too - always friendly and knowledgable. The owner must be great employer, too, because the employees have been there a long time and seem happy with their jobs - a very nice (and unusual) thing to see in the restaurant business."

  • "I've always viewed Hayes Street Grill as one of those places on could always rely on for an enjoyable meal; I was a bit disappointed this time. The maitre d' was not welcoming, and seemed put out that we had a reservation. And after ordering we were surprised when our entree showed up rather rapidly, not having been served our salad. While the server did comp us for the salad, she offered to bring it while our entrees were on the table so as to not waste the food. I was fine with that, but as it was my meal was not hot anyway. and then with the salad on the table there was hardly any room; our entrees were practically in our lap. My date enjoyed her Sole, and my scallops were okay, although skimpy- only three scallops?"

  • "Hayes Street Grill is in a fantastic location for grabbing dinner before the opera/symphony/ballet, but not really worth the prices. While we appreciated the location and the fact that the waiter explicitly enquired as to our curtain time (no anxious glancing at our watches!) the food quite simply was not worth what we paid for. It wasn't horrible, but certainly not worth the $30-per-plate we paid. Given the number of superior food options we have in San Francisco, I doubt we'll be back."

  • "My salmon dinner was very good, as well as the service. (Have the warm goat cheese salad before your entrée.) My experience with the salads and seafood entrées has always been good, however this is probably not the place for a person who does not appreciate seafood. They've never had a good steak. They offer just a few non-seafood entree's. With the limited choices in that area the name should really be "Hayes Street Seafood Grill." Sure I'll return, but I no longer seem to be able to convince my steak loving friends to come with me."

  • "The food is a bit short this time as my friend ordered the sole which has been my favorite. The portion looked a bit smaller. the presentation was not as attractive as it used to be. I ordered a scallop salad which is delicious, but not enough to be a full lunch. I ordered a pea soup, but it came in bowl size only. However, the service made up for it. Hayes street Grill is dependable, reasonable and a place you can carry a conversation. May be that is why you see all the who's who of San Francisco in here as regulars."

  • "Enjoyed our dinner at Hayes Street...seems like I have been going there for 30 years. Love that they offer so many sauces and choices for their seafood. I had the crabcakes and french fries and they were perfectly prepared and delicious. The service was excellent, but here is the tip. When you go at their busiest times which are just before performances, it will feel rushed. We came in later and enjoyed a leisurely dinner before heading to a late show at SF Jazz."

  • "We went to Hayes Street Grill with high expectations. The restaurant is in a vibrant section of Hayes Valley, just 1 block from the new Nourse Theater and has a reputation as a solid fish place. The staff is friendly and accommodating and we got good service. The place has a very nice, quiet adult vibe. The only problem was the food. We started with a caeser salad and curried mussels. The salad was good while the mussels were average. We then had grilled swordfish and hamachi, the restaurant's specialty, which were just passable. Neither was flavorful and their consistency was on the chewy side. We found a decent rioja at a fair price and had a tasty pear dessert and coffee. At $80/pp it would have been fine if the fish had been first-rate."

My wife actually resorted to a pork chop this visit. Something is not quite right with the management and I can no longer recommend it. I'll be looking elsewhere for pre-symphony dining."

  • "I've be coming to this restaurant for over thirty five years. Have never been disappointed or had a poor meal.The cocktails are the best and they have great wine by the bottle and the glass.. All the seafood is great. Cooking is done to perfection. Their fish is always fresh. Their salmon and halibut are grilled to your specifications. Seasonal specials like dungeness crab, sand dabs and soft shell crabs are fantastic. Their salads are great too. You can not go wrong ;my favorite is the warm goat cheese salad with toasted pecans.Desserts if you have room are terrific...the hot fudge Sunday and the chocolate cake ( if on the menu) are two that I love."
