A word from Hai Yen - Argyle
Hai Yen Restaurant welcomes you to experience the essence of Vietnam in Chicago. From our famous Bo La Lot (marinated ground beef wrapped in a Hawaiian leaf then grilled), to the very traditional beef noodle soup (Pho), or exotic salads such as the Lotus Root Salad, to our fresh fruit smoothies with tapioca, we have everything to please any one's palate.

Vietnamese food consists of regional flavors with an infusion of French and Chinese cuisine. Our cuisine is incredibly healthy and is known as the cuisine of the dipping sauces. We use a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs, mainly for wrapping with different types of meat in a very thin, delicate rice paper with a dipping sauce on the side. At our restaurant, we allow you to join in on the fun of cooking Vietnamese food by letting you cook the food right at your own table with a fondue pot, soup pot or a grill. So stop by and create your own experience of Vietnam with us!

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was great but service is a bit slow. There were no actual hostess when we walk in, we told the server that we had a reservation and he told us to sit anywhere we like. Overall, the food is good, just need to step up on the service."

  • "We had a good Vietnamese meal at this storefront before Steep Theater. It was about two blocks south. The food was very well prepared and the menu was diverse. It was empty when we arrived but about half full when we left. We enjoyed the steamed sea bass, shrimp in lobster sauce and the appetizers. The crepes were outstanding."

  • " My wife and I had a concert ti attend that evening. So we went right between lunch and dinner time. we were greeted pleasantly. The restaurant was pretty empty, which was to be expected at 3:30-4:00pm. We both had the pho, with spring rolls to start and bubble tea. We both agree it was some of the best food we have ever had. My wife insists it was the very best food she has ever had. I don't know that a trip to the city is possible again without a stop here."

  • "Great spot for authentic Vietnamese food. Good for groups and families. They have the typical spring rolls, pho and bahn mi, but also tamarind soup, salt and pepper shrimp, green papaya salad, and beef skewers. Almost any dish can be made vegetarian. Takes reservations. "

  • "It is always fantastic to eat at Hai Yen. The food is very fresh and perfectly prepared. Try the "grill at your table" lemon grass beef. It is awesome!"

  • "I brought a group of seniors to lunch after an outing in the neighborhood. Very good food, fresh and well perpared. Large portions, each guest asked for a take home container as they couldn't finish their meals. Would definitely return."

  • "Hai Yen is always top on our list. The food is so fresh and authentic. Try the beef fondue, wonderful! The sea bass in the clay pot is also fantastic."

  • "I've been here 3 times now and have not been disappointed. I like going with groups of 4 or more so that we can try more and eat more family style than just eating your own entree. I will definitely be back."

  • "Clean and neat, but not over the top in appearance; the food is really good."

  • "This restaurant, across the street from another favorite, La Patisserie Pi, is notable for fresh, crunchy vegetables and authentic Viet Namese fare. There usually more Viet Namese visitors to this restaurant than Americans. Don't miss the green papaya salad or the Tamarind soup. We also like the spring rolls. The price tag is reasonable, too. Enjoy!"

  • "We were looking for a casual vietnamese restaurant in the city as we were coming from the suburbs and came across Hai Yen and were so happy we did. The food was terrific as were the prices. We will be back and will most certainly recommend to friends. A wonderful find. The service was great as well!"

  • "The staff could not have been more friendly and patient. The food is always outstanding at Hai Yen, and we would definitely return in a heartbeat. Dining at Hai Yen was a first time experience for our friends. By the evenings end, they proclaimed their gratitude for enlightening them on a new restaurant, and they definitely plan to return as well."

  • "Food was fresh - try the wraps. Wonderful and generous Pho which hit the spot on a cold evening. Service was friendly and helpful. Reasonable prices. Great to have beer and wine option."

  • "You will not be disappointed. The restaurant provides delicious food served by a friendly, helpful staff eager to explain menu items. Get out of your comfort zone, and visit this authentic Vietnamese neighborhood. Pricing is reasonable, too."

  • "I have been here many times, and the food is always excellent. We love the crab (Vietnamese style is my favorite), as well as the lemongrass beef wraps. We try something new each time, and are always delighted. Our vegetarian friend found much to enjoy as well."

  • "We have always enjoyed the restaurant. This time the waiter did not communicate a gluten restriction to the kitchen for one of us who has celiac disease so we had to order additional food."

  • "We go to Argyle often for Vietnamese food. This is the restaurant we go to for 7 courses of beef - a multiple dish meal that Vietnamese restaurants do not always offer."

  • "All reviews talked about their Bol Nat, so had to try them. They were delicious. Highly recommend them. They also have a huge selection on their menu, so fit everyone's taste. The place was great."

  • "Good food but place is becoming too big for their britches. Also, their drink menu has incorrect pricing. I ordered a $4 glass of wine but later found out it is now $8. The customer should be told this before receiving the product. Restaurant management did not care or make an effort to correct the problem. Do not patronize this restaurant that clearly has no respect for their customers."

  • "There's always something new to try here, for fans of Vietnamese food. The service is attentive without being overbearing. The food is tasty and not too expensive. We go every year in a group of 6-12 and have a great time, talking, laughing and eating for two hours."

  • "Great food. I have terrible headaches from MSG and the waiter steered me away from anything that could cause trouble. Very delicious selection!"

  • "Food it fresh and very tasty. The vinegar fondue is the best! Get it with just beef."

  • "We all thought the meat was very bad quality and it was not tasteful at all! I do not recommend at all. Vietnamese should be very fragrant and this was not!"

  • "Food was very good. Only issue I had was the lack of guidance from our server."

  • "We dined at Hai Yen on a Saturday afternoon with a group of nine people. The food was very good and was enjoyed by all. I had the pho tai nam and was very pleased with the quality of the beef; the broth was rich and flavorful. The service was a little spotty...we had to ask for silverware and napkins as not enough were provided for everyone by the time our food was brought out. Also, our entrees were not timed well by the kitched...some received their meals 5-10 minutes before others. That said, the staff were friendly and with the quality of the food I would go back again for sure."

  • "Food was excellent and they were very accommodating to food allergies"

  • "8 courses of beef sounds ridiculous but it is not. It is really delicious and interactive. I also love their papaya salad and the last rice soup course. Otherwise, their pho is great."

  • "Hai Yen is a gem! Our server, Jasmine, was wonderful and made excellent recommendations. Our dinner was delicious from start to finish! We can't wait to go back."

  • "Overall a great place for good Vietnamese food. They had lots of variety and the pho was as good as Tank Noodle. We happen to be placed next to a table full of kids, so it was a bit noisy, but what can you expect with 4 little ones?"
    Dined on 4/15/2012
  • "Haven't been here in a long time. Went over the weekend and it was extremely good. Didnt sample the menu much but chances are....you are going for Pho. The broth is VERY good. We had the spring rolls with shrimp also and they were also good. I was definitely stuffed after finishing my Pho. Could have used a little bit more meat but that's ok because each bite was so tasty. The only thing negative was the slow service. The waitress was nice but it took awhile for us to place our order and to get refills. Oh well, it is still worth it to go to Hai Yen. I'm thinking I will be back again this weekend."

  • "I was on a date and the service was excellent. Our server was polite and helpful with his recommendations, very friendly. This really made our experience. Food was good, reasonably priced, and servings were more than one person could eat. I will definitely return."

  • "A wonderful experience with amazing use of the ingredients. The fragrances nd ultimate tastes were delicious. We were 5 and were able to hear each other very well."

  • "Brightly lit, busy Vietnamese restaurant in the Argyle Vietmanese neighborhood. Waiting line by 8:00 on a Saturday night. Noise level increases as the it fills. Food very good, especially appetizer wraps."
    Dined on 2/4/2012
  • "The restaurant was quite busy, and it took a LONG time for even our appetizers to arrive. I have eaten here before and don't remember such delays. The food was generally good but didn't quite reach the level of exquisite taste that I've enjoyed at Hai Yen in the past. Notably, the taste of lemongrass seemed to be missing from the dishes that promised it! The restaurant's version of the Thai soup tom yum was, I'm sorry to say, rather mediocre. However, our waiter was very cheerful and helpful. I will definitely try Hai Yen again."

  • "Hai Yen is truly authentic Vietnamese cuisine: fresh, beautifully seasoned, and delicious. The pho is excellent! It is fun to visit Argyle Street and see all the Vietnamese shops. Hai Yen is a perfect place to finish the tour!"

  • "One of the best Vietnamese in the area. Great flavors, nice sized-portions, decent variety, friendly service, limited bar (but the gingertini is a knock out!), reasonable prices. Great for eating-in, carry out and delivery (some dishes are better eaten in, such as wraps and pho). Count on leftovers (or order to have left overs!)"
