A word from Gruner
Grüner is an adventure through the Alps and along the Danube River which begins in the Black Forest and ends at the Black Sea. As it passes through Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania, an alternate Europe emerges, with a hearty, earthier culinary tradition favoring savory, dill, caraway seeds, crème fraîche, horseradish and paprika as opposed to the more familiar southern flavors of garlic, basil, olive oil, fennel seeds and tomato. This rich variety of cuisines is woven together by seasons and mountains and rivers—much like the Pacific Northwest.Continued

  • "If you like Bavarian cuisine in an open metro setting this is the place. Service was spot on during the entire meal and we had 5 courses in two hours. Everything was tasty and perfectly prepared from our app to the desert. We enjoyed a yummy drink at Kask prior to our meal (bar owned by Gruner next door). Definitely more intimate setting but service was not as friendly or attentive. Overall a great experience."

  • "Had hesitated visiting Gruner for several years as I imagined the food to be of the heavy, Bavarian ilk, but nothing could be further from reality. Our group could not have been more pleased with the symphony of flavors and textures and regional influences -- all intertwined with a light, deft hand. We were also introduced to our new favorite local white wine from Arterberry Maresh in Dundee - thanks to our terrifically knowledgable server. The Swabian ravioli; smoked salmon salad with horseradish, beet, sour cream dressing; and the halibut with morel and spring pea risotto all were outstanding. Make sure you get the warm cinnamon donuts for dessert. Perfect in every way."

  • "Gruner is a welcome addition to the meat-obsessed Portland food scene - a unique German-Austrian fine dining option for the discerning carnivore. The watermelon radish salad with pumpkin oil is superb but confusing - 'watermelon' refers not to the fruit but to the red-fleshed variety of radish. Our entrees were equally superb - a mixture of paprika-spiced rack of lamb, homemade sausages, and braised calf's liver. The only possible weak spot in the menu is the desserts, which were tasty but not especially memorable. Next time we'll stick with the hard-to-screw-up homemade doughnuts."

  • "My husband and I went here for his birthday dinner and had a lovely time. The wine was great, the food was delicious. I would love to be able to cook lamb that way! But we both really thought there should have been one more piece of lamb on the plate. Portions were a bit on the small side all around, except for dessert which was generous. Wait staff were courteous and professional. It wasn't super warm and cozy or anything, but it was very professional. The food really was delicious! And they brought him a candle on his dessert, a nice touch."

  • "The place is modern chic yet has a cozy feel to it - the tables are somewhat close, so you will hear everything from the the table next to you even if you do not want to, which detracted somewhat from our overall experience - our server was average on attentiveness and thoroughness despite the restaurant being full - our meal was great - the pretzel bread, multachen, kale salad and pork entree were delicious - unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert, but the chocolate flourless torte passed by out table and looked too good to be true - the cocktails we had was really different and original - definitely a must try with the unusual ingredients - overall, we would go back to try more items from the menu!"

  • "Gruner specializes in doing their own charcuterie etc. The result is that you have brats and sauerkraut for $25. The quality is good, but the creativity in the dishes is lacking. I had the trout which was good, but it was just two fillets on top of roasted potatoes with a split vegetable. Really lacked ANY creative aspects of cooking which could be done given the quality of raw ingredients they have. Salad and desert were nothing special either. I was a bit dissapointed."

  • "We had a lovely time at Grüner and its sister bar Kask the other evening. We arrived a bit early for our reservation at Grüner, so we hung out at Kask. When I let the folks at Grüner know that we were there early, they were happy to accommodate and we were seated about 30 mins before our reservation. The goodness continued at that point, as all the items we ordered from the menu were top notch. The whole experience was fabulous--we will definitely be back to try more of the menu."

  • "Food had great flavors with creative combinations and presentations. Loved the smashed fingerlings...wanted more! The dumplings and raviolis were also fabulous. Service was a bit off (got appetizer before drinks), but knowledgeable. The space is lovely, but the table arrangements make it a bit hard to talk without sharing everything with your neighbors, and definitely not for the romantics that like to sit close. I'll be back with friends that enjoy good food."

  • "We made a reservation a couple days in advance and I was going to be 15 minutes late so I called the restaurant to move our reservation to a later time. Got there at the time as predicted but they didn't have a table ready for us. So we waited at another bar, said they would call us but didn't. After a while, we came back to the restaurant asking if the table was ready- it finally was after about 30 minutes. We got our table, food was great- service was good. But I believe Olympic Provisions has way better german sausage and food for the same price. Would rather go there instead."

  • "We were delightfully surprised by the modern and comfortable décor, the friendly and knowledgeable wait staff and the incredible German style, but not heavy cuisine. We started with warm, roasted beet soup - both comforting and freshly flavorful. For main course, we had divine mustard infused spatzle with sauteed onions and shredded chicken - better than any we make in our German family! Our desserts were delectable - tart tatin perfectly cooked and served with delicious ice cream and warm homemade berliners with chocolate and caramel sauce for dipping. German and local beers on tap made our total bill seem reasonable for such a stellar dinner. A return visit to Gruner will be a motivating factor for our next trip to Portland!"

  • "The food was excellent. The service was a bit off, but staff was working hard for the most part. Only issue we had was when we arrived at our reservation time, out table was not ready. They mentioned we could have a drink while we waited and provided a cocktail menu, but no one asked to take our drink order. Once we were seated the service was good, with the exception that last drink order did not arrive after 15 minutes. Since it was so late we had to cancel it and order coffee instead. But overall the experience was very good. The food was excellent, all courses were delicious. My guess is the service issues was due to the full house on Valentines day."

  • "Overall, Gruner (one of the ChefStable Chris Israel restaurants) was a good experience. The food is very, very good. Foie Gras tourchons were a good small appetizer, the sausages were some of the best I've had recently, and the house mustard excellent. And, the charcuterie was top-notch, as you would expect. Our server was attentive and very professional. If fact, she was excellent. It would have been a great experience, but we had a little problem with the hostess (who seemed to be having a bad day), and it was too damn noisy. But, our server fixed both problems (she overruled a bad decision by the hostess, so we could sit closer, which solved the noise problem, because we didn't have to yell at each other)"

We'd go again, but mainly for a happy hour crawl through the smalls menu. Nce for a cozy happy hour party. They do have a big party room toward the back wall. Noise levels were beyond energetic.   • "Gruner can perform well even for those with high food I.Q. Porltandians , as well as those who like straight forward high quality, artfully plated comfort food. The deviled eggs are always a must and so is the pretzel bread. The wine list is specific to the Alsatian fare, and the beers are delightful. Try the schnitzel sandwich. The burger is one of the best in town, and any sausage they offer is stellar. The only drawback is the noise level which can get a bit much. Over all a keeper!"

  • "We actually moved twice, and the service staff were very helpful. First we moved because the group at the next table was very loud! Then we moved to the bar because we had our hearts set on the burger and it's only served in the bar. So they had to gather up our drinks, etc. each time -- and they did it with a smile. The burgers -- as well as the Gruner salad -- were fabulous!"

  • "We returned to Grüner for the second time last week after having stumbled into the restaurant on our first visit to Portland 3 years ago. It now resides on most top restaurant lists in a city where such a designation is significant. The recognition is entirely deserved. Grüner is an exercise in subtlety; setting it apart from many of its culinary neighbours. The wine list is extensive enough with a nice blend of local and Germanic whites and reds. The food is absolutely wonderful; resulting in quiet moments as everyone reflects on the tastes in their mouths and repeated conversations over the following days. Thank you again."

  • "We went for the special New Year’s Eve fixed fee dinner and wine flight experience. The food and wine and the wine pairing was great once they arrived. There seemed to be some scheduling issues somewhere. There were several times we would go for 10-15 minutes between each course. And I mean once they removed the plates from one course the next course didn't arrive for that time period. Then there were several times we had to ask for the wine to be delivered for the course. One time some of us were served wine but we had to ask for the rest of us to be served. This timing issue does not seem to be the result of an overbooked restaurant on New Year’s Eve. The place was only about 2/3rds full."

  • "The food here is excellently prepared and delicious. On this occasion, drinks and food came in the wrong order. Salad arrived before our before dinner drinks. The bar was behind with only one bar tender in a full house. The salad sat for 20 minutes while the bar tender caught up. Credit the waitress with slowing the kitchen so that our hot main course did not arrive before we touched the salad. The restaurant needs better coordination between bar and kitchen. This restaurant desperately needs sound proofing. It is all hard surfaces as is the "modern" style. This night a lady at the next table had such a piercing laugh that it hurt my ears. Some fairly modest fabric hangings or ceiling tile would leave the restaurant noisy but not painful."

Bland, boring, ice cream served with it a big disappointment. We eat out a lot and always do a dessert. My husband and I wish we had just passed on it this time."
