A word from Gruner
Grüner is an adventure through the Alps and along the Danube River which begins in the Black Forest and ends at the Black Sea. As it passes through Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania, an alternate Europe emerges, with a hearty, earthier culinary tradition favoring savory, dill, caraway seeds, crème fraîche, horseradish and paprika as opposed to the more familiar southern flavors of garlic, basil, olive oil, fennel seeds and tomato. This rich variety of cuisines is woven together by seasons and mountains and rivers—much like the Pacific Northwest.Continued

  • "Our book club met at Gruner and all of us greatly enjoyed the food (the salmon, pork chop, and spaetzle were big hits in the group) and loved the variety of wines available. The service was very good and the only con that happened was that there were a couple items no longer available on the menu and it was only 7pm. Our waiter did mention that was unusual and that they were having a busy night and happened to not prep enough for those items."

  • "I thought the food was all very good and there were lots of menu items that I wanted to try. However, I was hoping that the whole experience would be a bit more unique. The menu was German/Central European inspired, but there weren't any dishes that I had never seen before. The ambience was nice and tasteful, but also not unique. It was also very expensive, which I guess is typical of a restaurant in that location, but there are so many great reasonably priced restaurants in portland that I hate to pay too much for a meal!"

  • "4 people, two couples, dined Thursday evening at 8:00pm, 6/26. Great food. Very attentive service; unfortunately they brought the wrong entree to one of our party, so his (corrected) meal came out later than the rest of ours. The server handled it with class. The issue is the ambience: the place is so noisy that you have to yell across the table just to have a conversation. The interior design is beautiful, but the architect forgot to consider acoustics/ noise level. If they added accent tapestries on the walls, or some skillfully designed acoustic panels on the ceiling, or both, that might help. The noise level in the restaurant killed the experience for us."

  • "The restaurant specializes in essentially German cuisine with lots of housemade charcuterie, sausages etc. I had the choucroute garnie — house-made bratwurst & saucisson, braised pork belly, house-cured pork tenderloin, sauerkraut, sweet-hot mustard, yukon gold potatoes. Fantastic! My wife had the spaetzel which was tasty but could have used more meat. I would recommend it for a nice evening out with the wife or with a group of friends."

  • "Rarely do I dine at a place that was recommended by a foodie friend and not enjoy. This was one of these times. Perhaps I was not in the right frame of mind but nothing seemed exceptional. Odd menu. Portland is a place of exceptional restaurants. This just didn't float by boat."

  • "since I only have 750 char to tell you...We ended up being surprised by family showing up at Gruner to say hi. So we bypassed our table so that we could have drinks at bar with them. Ended up a night of having dinner at the bar and being the last people in the restaurant. We were totally clueless about the later, mainly because the wonderful bartendress never once made us feel like we were overstaying our welcome. She even suggested another dessert when everone else was gone! ok, now the food...foie gras, halibut with risotto and rack of lamb with homemade lamb sausages, then the chocolate dessert that comes in a cup and THEN the homemade doughnuts that were ordered after closing hours so that we could dip them in the choc dessert!"

  • "We picked gruner for a change of style from our previous favorite French spot, st. Jacks, and this European alpine spot does not disappoint. Menu is limited but high quality. Removing some possible choice leaves you with nothing but the best, just like European beer. A minimalist layout will leave all the distractions at home while you focus on food and friends. Lighting is by candle but not too dark and staff is friendly and classily dressed."

  • "Had a very nice birthday celebration dinner at Gruner. It is German as is reflected by the menu so a nice change from all the excellent northwest cuisine restaurants in Portland. Be careful with the street parking outside if you are there on Timbers game night as we got nailed with a $60 ticket even though we didn't park until after 7pm and Gruner's is many many blocks from the stadium."

  • "If you like Bavarian cuisine in an open metro setting this is the place. Service was spot on during the entire meal and we had 5 courses in two hours. Everything was tasty and perfectly prepared from our app to the desert. We enjoyed a yummy drink at Kask prior to our meal (bar owned by Gruner next door). Definitely more intimate setting but service was not as friendly or attentive. Overall a great experience."

  • "Had hesitated visiting Gruner for several years as I imagined the food to be of the heavy, Bavarian ilk, but nothing could be further from reality. Our group could not have been more pleased with the symphony of flavors and textures and regional influences -- all intertwined with a light, deft hand. We were also introduced to our new favorite local white wine from Arterberry Maresh in Dundee - thanks to our terrifically knowledgable server. The Swabian ravioli; smoked salmon salad with horseradish, beet, sour cream dressing; and the halibut with morel and spring pea risotto all were outstanding. Make sure you get the warm cinnamon donuts for dessert. Perfect in every way."

  • "Gruner is a welcome addition to the meat-obsessed Portland food scene - a unique German-Austrian fine dining option for the discerning carnivore. The watermelon radish salad with pumpkin oil is superb but confusing - 'watermelon' refers not to the fruit but to the red-fleshed variety of radish. Our entrees were equally superb - a mixture of paprika-spiced rack of lamb, homemade sausages, and braised calf's liver. The only possible weak spot in the menu is the desserts, which were tasty but not especially memorable. Next time we'll stick with the hard-to-screw-up homemade doughnuts."

  • "The place is modern chic yet has a cozy feel to it - the tables are somewhat close, so you will hear everything from the the table next to you even if you do not want to, which detracted somewhat from our overall experience - our server was average on attentiveness and thoroughness despite the restaurant being full - our meal was great - the pretzel bread, multachen, kale salad and pork entree were delicious - unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert, but the chocolate flourless torte passed by out table and looked too good to be true - the cocktails we had was really different and original - definitely a must try with the unusual ingredients - overall, we would go back to try more items from the menu!"

  • "My husband and I went here for his birthday dinner and had a lovely time. The wine was great, the food was delicious. I would love to be able to cook lamb that way! But we both really thought there should have been one more piece of lamb on the plate. Portions were a bit on the small side all around, except for dessert which was generous. Wait staff were courteous and professional. It wasn't super warm and cozy or anything, but it was very professional. The food really was delicious! And they brought him a candle on his dessert, a nice touch."

  • "We had a lovely time at Grüner and its sister bar Kask the other evening. We arrived a bit early for our reservation at Grüner, so we hung out at Kask. When I let the folks at Grüner know that we were there early, they were happy to accommodate and we were seated about 30 mins before our reservation. The goodness continued at that point, as all the items we ordered from the menu were top notch. The whole experience was fabulous--we will definitely be back to try more of the menu."

  • "Gruner specializes in doing their own charcuterie etc. The result is that you have brats and sauerkraut for $25. The quality is good, but the creativity in the dishes is lacking. I had the trout which was good, but it was just two fillets on top of roasted potatoes with a split vegetable. Really lacked ANY creative aspects of cooking which could be done given the quality of raw ingredients they have. Salad and desert were nothing special either. I was a bit dissapointed."

  • "Food had great flavors with creative combinations and presentations. Loved the smashed fingerlings...wanted more! The dumplings and raviolis were also fabulous. Service was a bit off (got appetizer before drinks), but knowledgeable. The space is lovely, but the table arrangements make it a bit hard to talk without sharing everything with your neighbors, and definitely not for the romantics that like to sit close. I'll be back with friends that enjoy good food."
