Diner Reviews
  • "It is an amazing experience. Everything was wonderful. Definitely be adventurous and try something you haven't tried before. We had lunch and ordered a salad and an entree. The salad was free and definitely not run-of-the-mill fare. The duck with polenta was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The beverages were refreshing and the desserts were innovative, delicious, and a holistic experience for all senses. If you're visiting the Napa Valley, definitely stop by for lunch! The weather called for outdoor seating, but the ambiance indoor looked inviting as well. It's also family-friendly as we saw quite a few parties with multiple generations."

  • "We had a wonderful time at the Greystone Restaurant at The Culinary Institute of America. Myself and my significant other had a romantic evening and what a great way to end a beautiful day after wine tasting all day in St. Helena. The food was delicious. Served and arranged beautifully. I am an vegetarian - had plenty to choose from and ordered the salmon. Perfectly cooked. Our server was polite and helpful. Got additional help from a wine expert when we had additional questions about the wines. Would for sure go back. Loved the ambience."

  • "This has to be one of the worst meals I was ever served. I ordered the crusted sole which was served on a plate with spinach & white beans. Needless to say the liquid from the spinach & beans made the fish soggy. It was a very bland meal with no seasoning apparent. The servers were friendly but seemed rushed, disorganized, & not attentive"

  • "I'm impressed with the food and selection paired with sparkling and flight wines and spirits. Each savory bite was delicious! Worth a drive up to have lunch before wine tasting. Very casual, relaxing setting."

  • "Given that this is an institute of culinary learning one would think that they would seek feedback on the meals, presentation and performance. The staff were delightful with meal presentation artful. We both had the salmon filet salad with the salmon prepared medium rare which was off putting. We asked to have the salmon prepared well done and returned it to the kitchen. They returned, apologized, and gave us a new salad still prepared medium rare. We ate the cooked portions of the salmon and greens, and enjoyed an excellent merlot. They would benefit from surveying their customers on site, plus understand that all tastes are not alike, especially when it comes to eating raw salmon."

  • "Visit the CIA for a wonderfully prepared gourmet meal, great ambiance and excellent service! When family or friends visit us from the east coast, the Culinary Institute in St Helena is a must visit stop for dining as well as a visit to their inspiring cooking shop!"

  • "This is my second time to the CIA. It's a gem in the wine country. There are so many great restaurants in wine country but CIA is special. The building is beautiful, the view from the outside terrace is amazing. Food is fantastic. Prepare your wallet but it's worth it."

  • "Main courses were excellent, but the garlic mushroom appetizer had very little garlic and was ovely salty. Service was good, not great. We dined at the CIA in New York a few weeks ago and that was a superior experience."

  • "Was recommended by family who had eaten dinner here so was unsure of how our lunch experience would be and we were all incredibly happy with our experience here. Service was awesome, ambiance was great, and food was amazing. Most of the table got the beef brisket sandwich which was served on Naan bread, other orders consisted of gnocchi stuffed with mushroom, and I ordered the seared salmon salad which was awesome served with skin on and very crispy. My boyfriends parents and mine were meeting for the first time and it was a perfect setting, with round tables good wine and awesome service."

  • "Our 3rd visit, over 16 years.. both previous times were special, and so was this celebration lunch. Nice menu, outstanding service by a waiter for whom nothing was too much trouble. (He even arranged for us to have a printed recipe copy for one of the dishes we particularly enjoyed.) There is a big contrast between the relaxed patio dining, with its scenic views and outdoor peace but warm air and remote service, and the cool inside dining room tables surrounding the open kitchen, right on top of the action, watching the busy team of chefs and staff making the meals. Alas, the noise level inside is very high, with little obvious attempt to make it less acoustically brash, and this very much hindered our conversation and relaxation."

  • "I had recently read some (not so flattering) reviews of Greystone, and had some concerns. Our experience was wonderful !! had requested an outside table by the rail for an Anniversary luncheon. and everything was ready for us. We were also treated to champagne and a specially decorated dessert. In short we were made to feel very special in every way. our service was well attended and the duck we had was excellent. Kudo's Greystone. You'll continue to be our first choice for that special meal out."

  • "We had wanted to dine at Greystone for quite some time. We made reservations for our 45th wedding anniversary. Nothing disappointed us. Our server, Katie, was delightfull. The history of the restaurant is amazing. The service was impeccable. The food was wonderful. Everything we ordered was well presented and prepared. Not one disappointment at all."

  • "After being seated, we waited for 15 minutes, while waiters rushed back and forth..... looking busy. Asked Maitre'd why no waiter, he stated someone would be with us, in a minute. The waiter was apologetic and nice. I ordered the battered filet of sole , which tasted like Mrs. Smith's frozen dinner. My friend orderded lamb, which he said was very good. We both ordered carrot cake for desert, which would not win any awards, in my opinion. I don't know where these people, who left five stars, dine on a regular basis... MacDonalds? 17% gratuity l. VERY noisy... all orders are yelled out to the chefs, who are standing five feet away. LONG walk TO and FROM the parking lot. I would not recommend The Wine Spectator, to a friend."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent weeknight dinner at Greystone and the food and service provided by the CIA students was excellent. I ordered the meatballs with poached egg for an appetizer and it was very tasty and satisfying plus it was a large portion. My entrée was the potato crusted petrale sole with a meyer lemon beurre blanc. The fish was perfectly cooked and the entrée was more than enough to satisfy my hearty appetite. My partner chose the Wild King Salmon which was served with some unusual smoked potatoes that were delicious. I also ordered the flight of three top notch Napa Valley Cabernet's that were served as three 2-ounce pours for $25. I found this to be a great way to taste some of the best red wines from the area."

  • "The food amd service are great. The wine list is exceptional. We tried the Premiere Napa Vallley flight. We loved all - in particular the 1999 Volker Eisele so much that we ended up driving to their family vineyard (which was also fantastic). Staff are very friendly and helped entertain our boys (7, 4). Outdoor view of Napa was also fantastic for lunch. I would like to go back for dinner."

  • "FANTASTIC. We go here every time we get a chance when visiting the Napa area. Food is great and the people that are working there are so kind and helpful. It is a must to see."

  • "The food was tasty (nothing outstanding) and the scenic view of the Napa Valley is beautiful, which I am assuming is what we paid the high price for. The total cost for four of us to have lunch there was outrageous, and we didn't even have dessert!"

  • "We've eaten at Greystone before and enjoyed our meal each time. The food was good again this time, but the heat in the restaurant was uncomfortably hot. After the fact, I wish we had eaten on the terrace. The view is great and it was much cooler! We would have opted for an outdoor table right away, but we were concerned that older family members dining with us would be cold. It's disappointing that the heat detracted from what was otherwise a very tasty meal. I had the minestrone soup to try something different. It was great! The base was heavy on mushroom flavor which I really enjoyed. My sole entree came w/ unusual beans that I've never had before but were tasty. They were huge! Like Jack and the Beanstalk. Carrot cake dessert was great!"

  • "Enjoyed our experience. Food delicious and waiter/culinary student was superb. The spectacular view was our favorite feature....sit on the patio."

  • "Greystone is a lovely venue and the food is wonderful. We were confirmed for a table on the patio but upon arrival were told that would not be available. We were seated at a table with probably the worst view in the restaurant but were taken care of very nicely and every effort was made to make sure we had a nice evening in spite of the table debacle. In the end it was the food, the waiter, and the manager that insured we had a nice evening for our special occasion. I would recommend CIA Greystone for anyone looking for a special place to enjoy a special meal."

  • "Went here on a Saturday night after a day of spa treatments and wine tasting. Passed by the Culinary Institute of America and said, "Oooo, let's try this - it must be good!" Well, $140 later we were both disappointed. Our server barely looked in our direction while both he and the water/bread person attended to numerous other guests. The starters that we ordered were amazing - Mussels & Beet Salad - but both of our Entrees - Beef and a chef's special gnocchi - let us down. We will not be returning and will advise our friends to avoid the place. With so many great restaurants in Napa, don't waste a Saturday night here like we did."

  • "The thin slices of duck breast started out very good. When I got to about the 5th slice, the piece had something tough in it. While I tried, I could not swallow that piece. I then ate parts of the few small pieces that were left. Needed more substance on that plate. Dessert was very good. My friends liked their chicken and skirtsteak. This was my 5th time at the Greystone, I was not happy with the meal. I am from Chicago."

  • "We began with salads and they were delicious! The ingredients were so fresh and the dressing as well. The bread and dipping olive oil was also very flavorful. We both had the steak flat bread and it was great"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner and evening there seven years ago and thought since we were visiiting the area again we woulduld try again. We were very fisappointed in the experiece this time. The students did not have the same professional air about the, most seem less than interested in serving, etc. and the meals from start to finish were only so-so in taste and presentation. The prices were reflective of an upper level dining establishment however the product was not delivered as expected. Unfortunately we will not return or recommend."

  • "We enjoyed lunch at Greystone. We learned the culinary students rotate from front service to cooking and various processes involving food preparation and serving. Our choices were very well prepared and the table service excellent. We like the unique atmosphere of a restored monostary and of how the food is prepared and menue items are designed. A great food experience!"

  • "There were numerous choices for our appetizer, main dish and dessert. We each ordered something different and after tasting each other's selections, we all agreed that they were all delicious. Reservations are a must as the restaurant fills up quickly. We had a glass of Merlot with lunch and coffee with our desserts. Our waiter was very knowledgable and made our lunch most enjoyable."

  • "I have always wanted to go to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Finally, for my 50th birthday, my mom treated me to lunch at the CIA while on vacation in wine country. What a lovely lunch. Service is excellent and food divine. As much as I loved watching all that was going on in the kitchen, it was a bit noisy. Next time I would opt for outside dining on the patio with the lovely, serene views."

  • "Doesn't matter how many times I've been there, the food is always good, the greenery outdoor seating view is always breath taking, and the service is always top notched. I heard form one of the student servers that the restaurant is now 100% student run since January 2014. With a great dining environment with gourmet food and the sport to the students, you can't find anything better in town."

  • "We had heard about the restaurant from a fellow traveler in the area. We were intrigued by the combination of supporting students in their craft and enjoying potentially world-class dining. We experienced both. The students were fully engaged and beamed at the praise we offered. The meal was exquisite, both in complexity of flavor and quality of ingredients. Served timely at the perfect temperature. A joy. We will be back on our next trip."

  • "Went to Greystone for a special occassion and brought a fabulous bottle of wine. We both had the salad that was over salted but otherwise was very good with very fresh ingediants. The rest of dinner was very disappointing. My friend had the fish that was over salted and not well cooked. It also did not appear to be very fresh. I had the steak which didn't have any flavor and was a very tough piece of meat. The wine I brought was a hit, but stop after the salad. We ate at several places in Napa during the week. This was the second most expensive dinner and no where close to the quality of all our other meals"

  • "We had lunch at the CIA with much anticipation. We had dined on our last visit to Napa in 1996. The food was excellent, service top-notch and very comfortable. The adjoining retail store was a lot of fun also and we made a few "foodie" purchases. This spot is worth the visit."

  • "Food average at best service was so so them they hit us with17% service fee when service wasn't good. Didn't give us water or bread though we asked for it and the food not very original or good and nowhere close to what it should've been for the price."

  • "Food was perfect. Our waitress was nice and well-trained. She even got me some recipes for the dishes. The view of the summer vineyard was gorgeous. There were two things that bothers me. One is the dirt on the plates due to the outside seating. I suppose they should wipe the dirt off before bringing to the guests. The second one is the girl who helps with water and bread. In the middle of our meal, my mom's seat got too much sunshine and we asked her if she can move the umbrella for us. She said they are not supposed to move umbrellas but she can move the table. We had to agree, but she just moved the table a little bit which is helpless. Later, we asked our waitress who said that's not true. She kindly helped us to move the umbrella."

  • "Our male server was certainly inexperienced. Never checked with us after we were served as to whether we were satisfied. Spent an inordinate amount of time with a couple at the next table, doing the absolute minimum for us. We observed that he even failed to take the order from one person at a nearby table of about seven customers and had to be reminded. I really don't think this young man will ever cut it in the restaurant industry. I had been to the CIA about ten years ago and loved it, but this visit was a huge disappointment."

  • "We ordered wine flights and unfortunately the staff mixed them up so we had no idea which wines were which. They were in the midst of changing their wine menus. The sommelier went of an old menu while the staff went off the new one. The servers and chefs were students in training and all appeared to be happy with their education and were looking forward to starting successful careers. The food was above average, not excellent. My daughter ordered the steak which had to be returned as it was too tough. The sole was cooked perfectly but was a little bland. We all enjoyed the mussels and dessert."

  • "The service was not very good but I understand that it was the students that were serving me. The view from the patio is great. The food was very disappointing. The salad lacked flavor. The steak was served cold and the chocolate mousse was a disaster. I wanted to go to this place for years and now that I have I do not plan on going back. So disappointed with the Culinary Institute of America."
