Diner Reviews
  • "First time at Great Maple, and I will definitely make a return visit. The food was very fresh, well made, great flavor and good portions. We ate the venison chili, the Newport veggie sandwich and the apple pie a la mode. All three dishes were delicious, and our waiter was exceptional."

  • "It was a little noisy, but we tried the wine special, very nice, and I had the fish of the day, an halibut with pecan crush, scrumptious Friday meal! I cannot wait to come back and try one of their grass-fed option; glad to see that on the menu!"

  • "Don't miss great Maple for portabella fries and delicious lamb burger. Known for big and interesting salads too."

  • "Being fairly frequent Great Maple diners, we were pleasantly surprised to find a fabulous Sunday brunch menu. Yes, the Bloody Marys and Mimosas are fun --- but it is the creative, reasonably priced, extraordinarily varied menu that makes this a great Sunday destination which is made even more pleasant by OpenTable reservation process!! Loved it"

  • "We went out for an early dinner because we have children (4months, 2 years and 7 years). We went on a Sunday and could only get brunch at 4:45pm. Dinner doesn't start until 5. No exceptions. Thought it was weird to still be eating bland pancakes at 5pm. My two year old didn't seen to mind though. The salads for the adults were disappointing. They were GIANT piles of lettuce with virtually no toppings. I had the strawberry spinach and my father in law had the beet salad. My husband thought the veggie sandwich was so so. My sister in law liked the chicken sandwich and everyone liked the truffle fries"

  • "Pros: Good food. Good atmoshphere. Alot of different choices on the menu. Cons: 1.Greeter sat us and didnt say a word and walked off. I didnt feel very welcome right from the start. Might as well just hand us a menu and point to our table. 2. Friendly waitress but had too many tables to work. I also noticed her bussing a table. She was friendly and attentive but we had to flag her down from time to time due to her amount of tables she was working."

  • "My husband and I love the Great Maple. The food was so fresh and so tasty. Our waiter was very personable and knew what to recommend for both drinks and dinner. We have been there for both and lunch and dinner and will continue to go there. I highly recommend the Great Maple to everyone!"

  • "My husband and I tried this for the first time the other night. We had high hopes to find a new spot to eat. Our waiter, Taylor was awesome. He was attentive, funny, got everything we ordered right, etc. But, the food was just "meh". We wanted to like it but couldn't."

  • "Great Maple is a fun location at Fashion Island. I continue to be astonished of their expensive prices for simple salads and burgers. Fun place to have lunch or dinner and disregard the prices!"

  • "I went on a Friday night with 3 other people at 8:30. We got great outside seating. The menu is diverse and we ordered the following: Mushroom Aioli and pesto fries- very delicious, I would recommend. Brie and buttered apples served with crouton like bread- also very delicious. I ordered the BLT and they loaded that thing with SO MUCH BACON. Of course, I love bacon but other people may get turned off by the amount. I thought it was fantastic. The others really likes what they ordered. Overall, I thought the price and the food were well worth it. Lovely ambiance as well."

  • "Went to GM in Fashion Island, expecting the same dining quality and experience that I had at the San Diego location (which is FANTASTIC!). The only things that both locations have in common are the noise level and the drink menu. That's where the similarities end. The F.I. location's menu is heavy on burgers, sandwiches, and flatbreads. They do not have the wider selection of entrees that you find in San Diego. The beet salad at the F.I. location was a joke - they should rename it Arugula salad, 3 red beets, and nothing else. Because that's what it was. I had the same dish at the San Diego location, and I cannot believe the difference. We won't be going back. Don't waste your time or your money (it isn't cheap!)."

  • "The sea bass I had was great. Usually it's hard to find a restaurant that makes a good sea bass. But Great Maple did it very well. The service was fantastic, had a great waiter that gave us fantastic recommendations and never left us hanging on anything. Even the hostess was very helpful to us, recommending food. That was a nice, welcoming touch. Made us felt very welcome and comfortable. All around a great experience."

  • "Out of highcharirs for kids. They serve frozen fries and frozen veggies. No kids menu. Ordered a large burger and was dry. The steak was over cooked and service really slow. Will not be back."

  • "Ask for Andy - he was an amazing server ! He was very attentive and added lots of extra little touches, like warmed milk for coffee. Who does that? It was great. Food was okay. Atmosphere, awesome."

  • "This is a fun place to dine with quality food and excellent service. Cheerful environment, all-American food, fine salads and burgers. Very enjoyable."

  • "We specifically drove to Newport Beach for the "Cherry Pie" they were soliciting ("Today's Seasonal Offerings") at the Fashion Island location. Upon dessert time we were told "oh no, that is an old pie offering". Too bad we found out about this after we ordered a lighter lunch (you know, to save room for the pie). The visit was a bust but I would return again and will call ahead of time to find out the pie status."

  • "I made the reservation for Valentines Day partly due to a friends recommendation and partly because they didn't have a set menu for the holiday. It was our first time there, so we had no clue what we were walking into. Being Valentines Day, we expected the place to be crowded and loud. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. The tables were set very close together, again I'm assuming that it was a holiday setup. We chose the baked Brie with apples for a starter and were amazed. It was delicious. Served with enough toast to finish the whole starter. Fro dinner, I chose the flat iron steak and my wife had the Sea Bass. Both meals were prepared beautifully and portioned correctly. The service was great even for being a holiday."

  • "Tried the quinoa baby kale salad which had a bright vinagrette and added grilled chicken on top. The salad was satisfying without being overly filling. Loved the outdoor heated patio."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely dinner for 6 at this fun and flirty restaurant. The servers were attentive. Everyone enjoyed their food except for the person who ordered fish and chips. The apple pie was over the top good. Comfortable decor. Good location. Lots of parking."

  • "Lobster salad special was delicious with nice size chunks of lobster meat and a good dressing but the beef dip sandwich was disappointing. The meat was not tasty and was over cooked-and a bit dry. Did not like the au jus either! The chef needs to visit Houston's and check out their beef dip sandwich! However, the French fries were excellent The service was just okay as we had to keep asking for water refills etc. We were never sure whom our server was!."

  • "We've been here at least four times and the food is never prepared how we requested or the quality is just average. This last time we asked for the fish to be simply grilled and it came drenched in a gravy like broth. We also were asked how we'd like the burger cooked and asked for medium and it came well done. Similar occurrences like this have happened in the past. And for the price they charge, certainly not worth the quality. I'd rather go to Gulfstream for the fish and Cafe R&D for the burger. Sorry, Great Maple. You've run out of chances to impress."

  • "The service was impersonal and so-so. The food was nothing special. The only thing I enjoyed was the asparagus soup. The meat was chewy, the bread got dry after it cooled (and we had to ask for it), the pie crust was mush and tasteless. Might consider trying something else there, but the prix fix choices are not inviting!"

  • "Had a good dinner at Great Maple recently. Definitely a step above more typical mall fare, with an interesting menu (lots of salads) and good food. The salads are large and interesting, so keep that in mind if you want an entree. I had the tomato mozzarella salad, which had the interesting addition of avocado, and it was quite good. Also had the penne and meatballs, which was also good, and not an outlandish portion size, but I took some home, being semi-stuffed with salad. Great Maple isn't as fancy as some of the other fare at Fashion Island, but was a good solid meal."

  • "Come here often. Great place to dine with friends, family etc. Even brought my elderly parents as well as a group of grad students. Suitable for all. Interior design with the use of wood and the red chandeliers makes you feel like you are on vacation. Food is wonderful, staff is friendly."

  • "The main reason for a 4star vs 5star is the noise level, the salad, and the dessert. Three of us had the burger and one of us had the veggie sandwich. We enjoyed the meals and the pommes fritas were great. My issue with the salad was the price for the simplicity--it was large enough to share, but it was mostly greens with a few slices of cucumber--personally, I like more veggies. The cherry pie was given to us for free as a promotion, and the slice was large enough for all four to share; however, the pie crust was doughy vs flaky, and the filling did not taste good. I would recommend restaurant based on service alone--Lauren spent a lot of time with us on the menu, and there were always people available for questions, water refills, etc."

  • "Portabello fries were interesting...I liked it. Every review raved about the blue nose sea bass. The risotto was great with plenty of mushrooms. However, I find the sea bass over cooked. It felt like a piece of overseared ahi. The roast beef dip sandwich was very generous, a lot of beef. It's nice it came with a side. Wine list was not that impressive."

  • "After attending a movie in Fashion Island, my son and daughter-in-law and I were able to get a last-minute reservation at Great Maple for an early dinner. The service was prompt and courteous. We enjoyed delicious sandwiches, salad and truffle fries and were in and out in under 45 minutes, making room for the later revelers."

  • "If you want a good bite while shopping or before a movie, Great Maple is the place. Good food, lots of choices, nice bar selections and excellent service. The ambiance is a bit loud and energetic, especially on a busy restaurant night. Our server managed our table well and was very attentive, cheerful, fast and friendly."

  • "With the exception of the appetizer of meatballs and homemade, robust sauce, The food was unremarkable. The ribeye was thin and pale, the lobster ravioli was not melt-in-your-mouth decadent. A steak house or Italian restaurant may be best for those dishes. Perhaps their salads are their specialty? Nice, prompt servers and wait staff, busy bar, but too many other restaurants to choose this for dinner. Will try lunch next time."
