  • "I went to Giovanni's with my parents and we all loved it. The service was great and the food was delicious. I had the gnocchi which was so light and fluffy. The decor was very traditional and not what I would choose, but that's just a personal preference. I definitely suggest trying this place."

  • "I can't really say anything bad about this restaurant. The food was quite good. The service was professional and very attentive. Personally however, the "feel" of the restaurant was just a bit "stuffy", for lack of a better word, and I didn't feel real comfortable dining here. If you like truly authentic Italian food, I'd say go. The restaurant just seems a bit pretentious for my taste."

  • "Giovanni's is classic Italian dining at its best. Elegant but unpretentious, which is how it's supposed to be. We were greeted with a lovely "buona sera" at the door. Our bus boy was jovial; our waiter friendly but not intrusive, superb at his job. The menu is also classic, mostly Tuscan from what I remember. My date had the linguine with white clam sauce, I had the veal saltimbocca, with a requested side of pasta all'inglese. The saltimbocca is prepared stacked instead of rolled, but no matter. Both were delicious. We finished with hand made zabalione and double esspressos, mine with a shot of anisette, another classic touch. The wine list is varied and accessible, at least to my unpracticed eye; we chose a Wilamette Pinot Noir."

  • "Even though the noise level was "quiet", it was not stuffy. The humor and expertise of the wqit staff was phenomenal. All four of us raved about our food choices. Unfortunately, I turned around long enough the next day for the dog to enjoy my leftovers! I was very disappointed since I was so looking forward to it a 2nd time. Since he is not normally a food stealer, I would say that it a pretty good endorsement! Ha! Thanks for a lovely dining experience! It was a perfect choice before attending a show at The Fox."

  • "The restaurant is a bit small and cramped, which kind of makes for a less intimate experience. Other than that there was really nothing too bad about the ambience.My biggest problem was that the food was not good. I had a shrimp dish for my entree. The breading was burnt on one side and the shrimp was clearly overcooked. I just feel that a restaurant of this caliber (not to mention the prices they charge) should put out a better quality of food."

  • "Giovanni's is a nice restaurant in on the street corner in the middle of the neighborhood. Parking on the street if you can find it but don't worry, the valet can find it for you. A small cozy atmosphere with friendly faces. Small dining room that is crowded with small intimate tables. Although the space was small, I still felt alone with my date and we could talk in a normal voice. Even though there were a lot of dinner guests, it was not noisy. It was very pleasant. The food was very good and the wine selection was great. We had a very enjoyable evening at Giovanni's and would definitely return."

  • "The wife and I went here for Valentine's Day dinner. It was a busy night; however, we got there at 6pm and had plenty of seating. By the time we left at 7:!5pm, it was packed. Reservations did not seem to matter as we heard the wait was up to an hour. Someone walked by begging we were at a table for four and we just said two. Just seemed a little understaffed if you cannot move people through that quickly. Food was good and service was good. I had the veal Marsala and the wife had the shrimp scampi. We split the calamari and fried zucchini appetizer. Again, we enjoyed the food and the service. Be careful on reservations!"

  • "We waited 20 minutes just to tell them our names and we all had reservations. The restaurant is very outdated. While we were waiting, the one employee was talking rudely to one of the valets. Once we were seated, we were surprised at the good prices. We paid $10 for a small side salad that was supposed to have tomatoes, but only had half of a small cherry tomato. The dinners weren't cold, but the definitely weren't hot either."

  • "It was very busy due to valentines day. Our waiter kept forgetting about us and we set for long periods of time without him checking on us. He was nice but, overwhelmed. The busboy was amazing!!! If it wasn't for him we would not of had drinks at all. The food was very good. So the experience was fine up unti the disturbing part of the night..... We used the valet parking and when we gave our claim ticket they could not find our car anywhere. The valet brought us sets of different keys asking if they were ours which they were not. After 15 minutes or so they found our car they had given it to someone else and they drove off in my NEW car, that I have had two weeks. I was thankful they brought it back but...... What the heck????"

  • "Over booked again,,,waited 40 minutes after our reservation time, has happened before, no apology from owner, guess he thinks he is the only Italian restaurant in town, servers who grumpy because customers were no happy, table next to us sent pasta back ...was cold...a lot of better restaurants ...support the restaurants where you will feel appreciated !!!"

  • "We had a great dining experience when we ate here. Their special, some pork and risotto dish whose name escapes me was tremendous. Their tiramisu was one of the best we've ever tasted!! There atmosphere is a bit strange and outdated. Seems they're holding on to their traditions too long. And when we ate there, it wasn't crowded. So I wish we wouldn't have been seated in the enclave, crammed next to the other table. But I digress. Overall a really good dinner."

  • "I don't recommend the veal chop. The coffee was horrible. The chocolate cake was either dry or stale. Appetizer was great, salad was great, bread was great, My girlfriends dinner was excellent. She had a breaded chicken breast with proscitto. Service was phenominal."

  • "My wife and i booked reservations for New Years for 8 oclock. We arrived and had to push our way up front to check in. We waited for 25 minutes to be seated. The restaurant offered a filet/lobster combo for the special. Needless to say, the main course did not include either. Instead we were given Salmon, which i am not a fan of, and some chuck steak. The steak was not flavorful and tough and the salmon was ok. We were told they ran out of filet and lobster which is crazy since we arrived at only 8 o'clock. The server was great and entertaining but we were not offered a discount on our meal. To top things off, they ran out of tiramisu, which is my wifes favorite dessert. Overall, not a good experience which ended in terrible substitutes."

  • "The post Christmas crowd was light which meant we got extra service at a restaurant know for great service. The scallop appetizer was unbelievable as well as the 3 pasta dishes we ordered. The wine was reasonably priced for such an establishment. But best of all was the George bush chicken and the dessert. The only let down was that one of our guest's steak was a little over cooked and the salads were average. But overall a great meal that we won't forget about any time soon."

  • "I've been here many times a year and could always rely on great food & service . This time, I was there after a five (5) year absence. There was no valet waiting to park my car (busy neighborhood). Also, I had requested a quiet/private table online. But, despite the fact that the restaurant was not full, our table was anything but "quiet or private". Finally, my companion (who's not a wine drinker), ordered a screwdriver. We were told they were out of orange juice, but could offer grapefruit juice instead - which is what she drank (with a pucker). On the positive side, my salmon and her steak were good. The tiramisu was excellent. Giovanni, who is very attuned to good service, was not there in person. Perhaps he should be more watchful."

The food was excellent, but it does not outweigh the absolutely poor service my family and I received at this highly acclaimed restaurant. From the non-existent greeting at the front door to having to repeatedly having to ask our waiter for drinks and bread. For my family of 8 I try to take them to a special place every Christmas. For $729 I'll take my business elsewhere next Christmas."

  • "I dined here with my family to celebrate my sister completing graduate school. We would be moving her to her new home early the next morning, so we decided not to drink that evening. The moment that we said we would not be having wine, the service went dramatically down hill. The waiter acted insulted that we would not be drinking. He kept bothering us about our order about every 2 minutes- interrupting conversation each time. While ordering, he kept asking if we would like to order the more expensive item that was nothing like the item we were ordering. I ordered porcini mushroom risotto. A normally good, simple Italian dish. It was under-cooked and I found one mushroom in it."

  • "We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The situation involved a small gathering for our holiday dinner with our niece. The "Captain" couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. When he perceived that the kitchen was a bit backed up, her served us the most wonderful salad (on the house) and when dinner arrived, it was delectable and first rate. My niece had arrived a bit frazzled and when we had stuffed ourselves with dinner, the Captain brought us some of the best Tiramisu I have ever eaten. Again, the Captain mentioned that he hoped the dessert would lift my niece's spirit. That kind of service can not be found except on rare occasions and its my opinion that those occasions are frequent here."

  • "My wife and I have dined on "The Hill" many times, but this was the first time we experienced Giovanni's. This is a classic Italian restaurant, which delivers superior Italian meals with impeccable service. It was obvious that Christian G, our server, was quite experienced. He was completely versed in every aspect of the menu, to include wine knowledge and recommendations. Christian made our dining a memorable, fun experience. Whether or not you are a foodie, who enjoys outstanding food and superb service in a refined environment, this is the restaurant for you."

  • "I enjoyed Giovanni's very much. We were greeted by the owner at the door, which was a nice touch. My fiance and I started with the shrimp appetizer, which came in a wonderful mushroom sauce. Entrees were very good as well--his steak was cooked perfectly and very delicious. I ordered the gnocci, which was good, but not amazing. There were several other things on the menu that were appealing to me, so I want to go back to try them soon! Overall, a nice experience with good service."

  • "We had not yet been to Giovanni's on one of our visits to St. Louis until now. We are happy that we have finally made it! We had one little glitch with the Open Table reservation, and had to wait at the bar for about 20 minutes, but that was no hardship and our host was very concerned about making sure we got our table and meal. The food was very good, as well as the service. Loved the ambiance, too. We would go back again."

  • "Our dinner was delicious and well prepared. The space, however, is crowded. I like intimate, but they cram tables into every possible space, leaving little room for servers to move. Also, I don't want my water refilled each time I take a sip. When I told the server, he smiled and said, whispering, "the manager," implying he would be in trouble if he didn't. This practice is intrusive. The most serious flaw was that I ordered an appetizer, and asked it be served with my husband's entree. I did this because I wanted a smaller portion, and was trying to minimize expense. But the server brought was an entree portion at an entree price. I thought it was a larger than usual app, I didn't realize the error until the bill came. I'm disappointed."

  • "This is a beautiful place with a real nice ambience. However, the food and service are stuck in the 70's and I don't mean in a positive way. The sauces were bland, there was lack of spices in almost every dish and the presentation of the dishes were poor. They finish a lot of dishes on a side station in the dining room off to the side. Why? If you are not doing it tableside why do it at all? The entree costs are high and it does not seem they use high quality ingredients. This is a place that was great but now is just serving food day to day with no inspiration."

  • "Giovanni's has a very formal feel to it with lovely paintings on the wall, crystal chandeliers, white tablecloths; a general feeling of being very well taken care of while you are there. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and our server was old school as well, obviously someone who had made a career of serving and he was elegant. It had all of the old service touches that are rare these days. Most dishes had a final preparation stage in the dining room on burners, something seldom seen these days. My only complaint (one that I frequently find in italian restaurants regardless of the price tag) was the bread they served was awful, crumbly and seemed stale. but that is a minor complaint, we had a lovely dining experience at Giovanni's!"

  • "Incredibly delicious food; my wife and I shared an antipasto appetizer that included an amazing cold eggplant stew. My Involtini di Pollo alla Presidente Bush may be the best chicken dish I've ever tasted. My wife's Lasagnetta di Melenzane still inspires a mouthwatering incentive to return soon. Service was impeccable (almost to a fault); we arrived early around 6:20pm and there were more servers than customers. Each wanted to assure prompt and complete service. As the night progressed and the restaurant filled, we no longer felt over-served, but well attended as needed. This was our first experience at Giovanni's; it will not be our last! If you live anywhere within 50 miles, put Giovanni's on your short list of must dine restaurants."
