Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed the specialty cocktails and our waitress was excellent . Our steaks were not up to par for the price and not prepared well. The service and the cocktails left us happy enough to try it again."

  • "Love the menu - eclectic and fun. Loved the suggested drinks with Whiskey in them (I can't do straight up). My brother-in-law from out of town is a whiskey snob, and he appreciated your selection."

  • "Food was good but nothing great. For the $120 my boyfriend and I spent, there are many other much better choices in St. Louis. Disappointed"

  • "The decor and feel of the restaurant matches it's name, in a nice comfortable way. Nice menu with a combination of healthy choices and big bold meat dishes. My husband and I enjoyed a few starters; the wings, kale chips, and grilled oysters, all were very good and moderately priced. I then had a bowl of the fennel, celery chowder which was nice. My husband ordered the osobuko which was just ok. Usually the meat should melt in your mouth and while this did come away from the bone easily, you needed a knife to cut through it. It tasted more like a roast that was a little overcooked. Our waiter, Joseph was perfect! He paid attention to small details and was there when we needed him without being annoying. We will definately go back again."

  • "Fun, energetic bar with great whiskey options and fun drinks but for what it is, it is too expensive."

  • "Don't assume this a standard meat and potato menu. Pleasantly surprised with the sable on lobster cake special. Thick, perfectly cooked filet. Also tried the crab cake and shrimp Creole, delicious. But the best was the shrimp and grits- spicey is just the first flavor."

  • "Let's start with the good. The kale house salad was good. The main course was probably the worst meal I have ever had. I ordered the short ribs and they were fatty and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were watery and bland. Our server was rude and argumentative that my husband had to use his steak knife for his salad as they had taken his dinner knife away. After the confrontation about the knife, I wasn't about to mention the quality of the food. They are listed as a steakhouse, however, only had two cuts of beef on the menu and the special was pork."

  • "Have been here for brunch 2x and it was wonderful both times even with a 3 year old in tow. Plastic glasses with lids would be a nice addition as I saw several children dining as well."

  • "Great food, cocktails and service in a fun energetic atmosphere"

  • "Interesting menu, with unique & delicious combinations of flavors. It was a little bit of a disconnect to be in a pricey restaurant with great food, but seeing most of the wait staff with tats & piercings (subtle but noticeable). Not a complaint, just an observation -- service was on par with other restaurants in it's class."

  • "I would go back to the bar but not the restaurant. Amazing drink selection and beautiful bar."

  • "Gamlin Whiskey House was a great place to celebrate my birthday. Thanks to my old friends the Gamlin family for making my birthday special."

  • "The tuna was extraordinary Saturday. Two inches think, sushi grade seared. The best tuna I've ever put in my mouth. The services was excellent, the drinks way above average. A bit noisy but otherwise, an excellent dining experience. Recommend to all."

  • "Overall this was a good restaurant. The appetizers were very good. We got a pork sampler, cheese board and kale chips. For our entrees, 3 of us were satisfied, and the other two were extremely happy. Two of us got filets, and they were ok but lacking in additional flavor. They tasted very plain. One of us got a "patio" steak, and he said it was ok as well. The ribeye and the blackened salmon pasta were big hits. The drinks were what we expected to pay. Overall I fun night and would definitely go back, and try some of the other entrees."

  • "First, I must say that I love whiskey and can say that they have a huge selection, which is great. They also have a good number of creative cocktails, and I enjoyed my cocktail with gingerale and honey ice. For lunch, I had the fennel soup which was good but then the flatiron steak with blue cheese fell short. It was dry and the meat was not well seasoned."

  • "Menu is very meat-heavy. Even so, you'd think they could get the meat dishes right. Alas, no. My husband's rib eye was quite bland, our friend's filet was gristly and tough, and my tex-mex pork steak was meh. The pork's BBQ sauce was bland and my baked beans were swimming in a yucky BBQ sauce. And I was surprised that a whiskey house didn't serve Famous Grouse scotch. Really? The bar scene was jumping with mostly 20- and 30-somethings. That's fine -- maybe they should try to focus on being a good bar, not a restaurant."

  • "Excellent food and service. Very crowded bar and the restaurant was noisy but overall convivial. We didn't get into the whiskey list, opting instead for a whiskey cocktail: a flawless Manhattan in my case -- I recommend the one with the red vermouth, not the white. We also enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner. The grilled Caesar and the veal chop special we're both delicious, though the romaine in the salad could have used a little more char. That's a minor quibble about one of the best dining experiences I've had in St Louis."

  • "The atmosphere was awesome, great cocktail list, and nice set up. We ordered the flank steak and it tasted like it had been soaking in soy sauce for a week. I like savory and salty foods but this was insanely salty. I only ate a few bites before my tongue started burning. We may give this place another whirl but will stick to drinks at the bar."

  • "The Brandy Manhattan and wine list were great, appetizers cof rab cakes and oysters, lamb stew, tuna and fried chicken with the spinich and grauten potatoes. Everything was great from the bartender to the wait staff was we were impressed!"

  • "Drinks (Gamlin Manhattan) were excellent! The attention provided to us was superb! Our table was not ready at the time of our reservation but Fred (owner/manager?) was not only apologetic but went out if his way to make sure our dining experience was outstanding. We were provided complimentary appetizers and the chef came out to the table to answer questions about the cut of the skirt steak. The display of courteousness and appreciation for our business was refreshing and greatly appreciated. The food tasted wonderful and we are looking forward to dining there again soon!!"

  • "They've got the classics (eggs benedict, frittata, biscuits & gravy....) and some interesting additions (meatballs, chilaquiles....). All of it is good. Bottomless mimosas for $25 got me in trouble. Oops. Try to sit by the window, because the rest of the restaurant is kind of dark."

  • "Foods is ok but ambience is not fine dining. Music too loud; decor too rough; back dining area too dark."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Perfect location with a sophisticated urban feel without the affectation that often comes from over-reaching. The food was excellent and adventuresome without being unnecessarily experimental and avant-garde. Excellent wine list and an over-the-top selection of whiskies and cocktails. But, don't be put off by the "Whiskey" in the name. I don't like whiskey but loved my whole experience."

  • "The atmosphere was great but the food and service didn't really live up to expectations. This would be a great place for a happy hour because the drinks were great but beyond that this wouldn't be a "special occasion" place which is the reason I went. Service was a little slow (granted we were there on Valentine's Day) and while the food was good overall the presentation was lacking and the quality didn't seem to justify the price. I had high hopes for Gamlin but they need to do a little more fine-tuning. The vibe was a little too similar to their sister bar/restaurant, Sub-Zero."

  • "Dined here on a Wednesday night with 5 other friends, the place was packed but we still had outstanding food and service throughout the meal. I had a Ruby Red Trout special that was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. The massive 23oz Pork Steak was a favorite of two of the other members of my party. The only glitch to the evening was some difficulty in splitting the check between the 3 couples, but it seemed to be a one-off issue with the POS system rather than an issue with the server. I can't wait to return to sample a few more of the 150+ whiskies. Additionally, they are all priced in two different pours (1.5oz and 2.5oz). The smaller pour makes for a great deal if you like to sample like I do!"

  • "My first visit to Gamlin will not be my last. The atmosphere was fun and alive, and we had a very knowledgeable server. The Wedge salad was very good, and my Ribeye was outstanding. The only downside was my wife's filet was close to Well done and she ordered it Medium. The staff was very apologetic and the chef even came to our table to personally apologize and remove it from our bill. I like a business that stands behind their product."

  • "The bar area is loud and full but we were seated in the back area rightin the window. Great people watching and we could easily have a conversation. Everything we ordered was excellent and our server was knowledgeable and attentive. Will definitely go back as GWH left a great first impression."

  • "The bartender is knowledgeable about the whiskeys they are serving which is key since it is a whiskey house. Wine list by the glass is a little light though if you don't want to buy a whole bottle. Food was excellent. Server recommendations were spot on. I also felt that the server checked in with us just enough - she was pleasant and gave just enough in contact to make us feel like we were being taken care of but not hovered over. I also appreciated that she already had the check split between the two couples so we didn't have to wait for her to go do that or ask. I would definitely dine here again. The owner or manager (not sure) was actually out on the floor checking in with tables which is something I appreciate."

  • "had good service, knowledgeable about whisky; food was not your standard fare and was prepared differently. Pretty good we thought. Sides are really good"

  • "We met another couple at Gamlin Whiskey House before heading to Fox Theater. We each ordered a different entree: ribeye, pork steak, filet and patio steak. All four entrees, side dishes, and salads were delicious. Our drinks were fantastic. Our server was attentive without overwhelming us, knowledgable about the menu and friendly. Before we left, my husband and I started planning a return visit."

  • "A good place for drinks and dessert. Food was just OK, nothing special. Bourbon infused chicken was just regular fried chicken. My husband had the pork steak and it was very cold--he had to send it back and he doesn't usually do that. I had the salmon which was good. I think they should have offered to take the pork steak off of our bill since he had to wait while they reheated it, but they did not."

  • "Don't hesitate to make Gamlin Whiskey House in the CWE a regular stop on your Happy Hour tour. They offer HH from 2-6pm with 1/2 price appetizers and 1/2 price drinks on tap. The appetizers are delicious and generous in portion size and include everything on the menu. Among my favorites are the Jameson and Ginger on tap, the Three Little Pigs (3 types of pig all smoked and brined in house) and the bread board, servers with an array of flavored butters. I mean, who doesn't love flavored butters?! Can't wait to go back!"
