Diner Reviews
  • "I love this place. Always #1 on my list when I want Sushi."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "We had reservations at Basho but kitchen closes early so we cancelled those and went to Fugakyu which is ten hundred times much better. Open late and always are so welcome to serve customers. The sushi is always fresh and very traditional"

  • "so whatever type of Japanese food you like you will find it here. they have neat little rooms for 6 or more people. the service is friendly but not in your face. parking is right across the street. They even have one of those sushi bars where the food floats past you and you select what you want, always a fun thing to do. I will go here again with my girl friend and for special occasions."

  • "We ordered 4 sushi rolls and all were excellent. The non-sushi items, noodle bowl and an appetizer were average. The service was professional and our food arrived quickly. Would definitely return for sushi."

  • "Raw fish was great. It might have been so fresh. Overall, it wouldn't be so cheep, but I think the cost performance is very good."

  • "Good place to get high quality sushi. While it's not cheap, you get what you're paying for. Surprisingly was ok with 1 roll per person which helped keep cost down, but that left some room for dessert down the street."

  • "Have dined here several times and is consistently excellent. The agedashi tofu is silky smooth. The ohitashi and seaweed salad are other favorite appetizers. I've only eaten from the sushi and makimono menus. The fish is wonderfully fresh. The rainbow, caterpillar and black tiger maki are as delicious as beautiful. I find prices comparable to other high-quality sushi restaurants. It can be pricey for a large group to sample their way through the menu but it's always been well worth it."

  • "We are sushi fiends, have tried lots of restaurants in the Boston area. And we keep coming back to Fugakyu. It's the best sushi in Boston."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Love this place. As always, great food and great service. They are starting to get a little pricy which is getting difficult. Even though the price is increasing we will still go because the sushi is that good."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "I personally don't think it is authentic Japanese restaurant. The food are fresh and tasty, but for the price, I expect better."

  • "Good to see Hiro and Desmond again, after all these years. FuGaKyu still runs a tight ship and great service. We had a small booth, which was quiet and great for carrying on our business conversation and enjoying our delectable meals at the same time. Look forward to coming back again soon."

  • "Began with a drink at the bar, friendly bartender. When table was ready, politely notified by host, not rushed. Sat at table, felt like I was in Japan, very authentic-feeling atmosphere. Waitstaff brought hot moist towels to clean hands. Waitress very polite and eager to please. Sushi, wine, and dessert were excellent. FuGaKyu lived up to its great reputation!"

  • "The good bits that made me feel like they knew how to try, but the bad bits made it clear that they don't care to. We reserved a table in advance, and we were seated in the furthest corner they could find, next to the bathroom and windy air conditioner. The menus are laminated, tied with ribbon, and look like they were made to look cheap. We ordered the Surf and Turf with an extra side of rice. It was clear that the lobster, beef, and chicken were boiled in plain water and served in a bland soy-based sauce. It was depressing. They completely forgot our miso soup and rice. Do yourself a favor and walk two minutes in any direction from this restaurant, and you are bound to find a more meaningful experience than at FuGaKyu."

  • "We love the food at FuGaKyu but last night the service and noise level ruined the experience. It took 30 minutes to get drinks and 90 minutes to get served. Sorry, cannot recommend."

  • "Terrific food and overall wonderful experience. Particularly recommend the baked salmon maki and spicy tuna but everything I've tried here has been exceptional. One of our party has some food allergies and the server was particularly helpful in navigating the choices. Most enthusiastically recommend."

  • "FuGaKyu is a great sushi restaurant but they definitely take advantage of their location being a 'city' restaurant which merely means they drive up their prices. My wife and I sat in the third floor section and while the ambiance was a bit more romantic, the decor was very cheesy. Sushi: Great cuts for the money. They definitely do not skimp of the thickness of each fish but feel for the money, you can go else where and get the same quality. Service: Maybe a downfall to the third floor, but it took a solid 30 minutes to get our alcoholic drinks. Our appetizer arrived before our drinks. Otherwise, our waiter was great! Location: Great spot but busy! Parking: Street parking. Leave time to find a spot."

  • "One of my favorite sushi restaurants in the Boston area. Have never had a bad meal here and look forward to going back time & time again. Sushi is fresh and the service is good. This is one of those places that will never get old!"

  • "We 've been to Fugyaku several times now. The first few times we felt it was delicious and worth the price. After last night, I'm changing my opinion. The food was just okay and the prices were still outrageous."

  • "This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Boston and this past dining experience certainly did not disappoint. Great food as usual, service was attentive and our waiter was knowledgeable & friendly."

  • "Fugakyu is independently the favorite restaurant of each member of my family, so it was a natural choice for my husband's birthday yesterday. My son had just returned from Japan, where he sampled outstanding sushi, and he still thoroughly enjoyed Fugakyu! The service is as reliable as the food. They don't guarantee one of the limited private booths in advance, but they kindly put us in a private room (at no addtl cost) when we arrived. Fugakyu will continue to be our most frequent restaurant destination-"

  • "Consistently good food and service. Creative menu. Moderately priced."

  • "I liked the Naruto appetizer, but the quality of sashimi and sushi was moderate. The price was not so high, so I guess the quality of the food was satisfying. The ramen was eatable but not good enough to make me order ever again. Food was moderate but the service and place were great. I felt like I am really in somewhere in Japan. I would like to go and try other dishes next time. BUT NO RAMEN!"

  • "It's not hard to find a japanese restaurant in Boston, but affordable ones are hard to find. Lunch at this place provides good food at an affordable price, making it a good place for lunch."
    Dined on 8/30/2013
  • "In a lovely atmosphere, the appetizers top the list for being the outstanding part of the menu. They are varied, interestingly prepared and artistically presented."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Not thing special, Just an usual Japaneses cuisine. Food are beyond average that you would find, their menu is large there is a lot of to choose from."

  • "I continue loving the food and service of this restaurant. Top quality and selection. I particularly recommend the appetizers if you want to go for a full experience of their best cuisine. The only negative this time was that the cocktails were simply not well-prepared. They tasted super bad and we returned both of them. I stayed with just a simply glass of Chardoney and my friend replaced his cocktail for the best beer on the menu."

  • "The sushi and sushimi tasted fresh and nicely prepared. The chef made a special plate to welcome us. It was outstanding! Love beginning a dinner with the feeling of being special. I have gone to this restaurant for years and it never disappoints. The sushi bar is the best place to sit unless you get a booth up front."

  • "We enjoyed our meal. We split the fugakau boat . It was delish but there could have be a few creative pieces that the chefs are capable of. We arrived early for our rez but they couldn't accomodate us. While the marble benches they have are attractive, they are not very comfortable and cold/to sit on if you have to wait. Our server was terrific."

  • "Enjoyed this restaurant very much. Friendly staff who provide excellent service. Great ambience and attention to detail in design. Excellent cuisine. I had Udon Noodles with Vegetables and my companion had Sushi Cook. Both were delicious. Would like to return to continue sampling the extensive menu. Close to Coolidge Corner and the Coolidge Theater if a good spot for dining before a movie is a consideration."

  • "I went with my boyfriend after making reservations through Open Table, and even though we were a few minutes late, we were seated almost immediately. The restaurant is set up on multiple levels, each with a great view over Beacon St and with several walls and partitions set up with several 'party rooms' set aside for groups. While it may seem a little strange at first thought, I realized that the partitions created a certain level of 'coziness' and privacy that is usually lost in larger establishments (not to mention volume level!). The food and sake were absolutely excellent and left my boyfriend and I with a reasonable bill for a delicious meal. I'll definitely be returning in the future!"

  • "Service is very good, waitresses fill h20 frequently, friendly but not annoying. Great sushi, at fairly good price."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "I would highly recommend Fugakyu for a dinner date, especially if they can seat you on the 3rd floor near the back wall. It's much more romantic and quieter there. The food and service are excellent."

  • "We went on our anniversary, and were seated on the third floor. The table next to us was loud and obnoxious. It took forever for the waitress to bring us anything. Actually, I think there was only one waitress working that entire floor, so we rarely saw her. The drinks we ordered 15 minutes before we ordered the appetizers, came well after the appetizers. The food took forever as well. On the rare occurance our waitress graced us with her presence, she apologized and said our food should come shortly, like 3 times. Once the food came, she was never to be seen again. The sushi was ok. Nothing to write home about. We had to get up and find someone to ask for the check. Maybe we went on an off night?"

  • "But it looked too good not to try! I have never had a bad experience at FuGaKyu in the years I've been dining there. This visit was definitely the busiest I've ever seen FuGaKyu but we were seated with no waiting or anything, little did I know that FuGaKyu had three dining levels. The tempura was absolutely delicious, it was hot and very fresh - the batter was crispy and we could tell that it had just left the fryer. If your looking for fresh, delicious, and authentic Japanese cuisine - FuGaKyu is your place."

  • "Our table was on the 3rd floor. Very nice room and a bit quieter than 1st floor. Ohitashi and seaweed salad were delicious. We ordered several makimoto and nigiri. All fresh, delicious and artfully presented. Prices in line with other "better" sushi places in Boston. Dinner for 3 was $80 but we only had soft drinks. Would definitely recommend and go back myself."

  • "Made reservations for 4 of us for Saturday night days in advance. Seeing as how it gets noisy weekends requested a booth so that we could close the doors and talk in private . Upon arrival we were told that a booth would be "a 45 min wait because they do not guarantee seating" by the manager . We were rather disappointed because we were left to sit and scream instead of a nice intimate chat as planned ."
