  • "Our service was spotty, and slow. Don't think it was the fault of the waiter. The food was, well, trying really hard, but just not there yet. A party of six, we were there for almost 3 hours, way too long, and things were forgotten and not done well. I think it will improve, the management was attentive to our needs, just not much to do for it. The GM was on his second day. It will probably improve over time."

  • "Our party of four had an early Sunday dinner (5:30), so we had the staff's full attention and had a quiet room. The decor is striking, with black and white print wallpaper, a huge chandelier, and matching wall fixtures of white/clear glass with red glass accents. All of us ordered the fixed price menu at $36 for a Kir Royale, appetizer, main, and dessert - a great value and really tasty. We started with the tomato carpaccio and smoked duck breast salad, followed by sockeye salmon and a lamb pappardelle - all were excellent. For dessert the creme brûlée was good, but the real winner was the apricot clafoutis. We'll be back!"

  • "We were greeted by the sweet host who remembered to say Happy B'day to my honey, and it just got better. While checking out our options we quickly realized that the less expensive fixed price menu offered amazing food at a great price. I had the mushroom ravioli and heirloom tomato salad and he went with the lamb shank pappardelle. Both excellent! There was also a refreshing kir royale, a lovely little gruyere cheese puff surprise, and don't get me started on the chic chip bread pudding. Our server was patient and attentive without fawning. I adore this restaurant."

  • "What a fabulous find! We were in a bit of a hurry to get dinner before a concert at the Freight & Salvage. The remarkable cocktails and spectacular food at FIVE were an unexpected treat; we're only sorry we hadn't found the restaurant before! The decor is a beautiful melding of the original architecture of the 100-year-old Shattuck Hotel with some decidedly modern touches. The cocktail nod to great hotels around the world was a delightful touch. We'll be back!"

  • "A friend and I recently dined at FIVE and were blown away by the dinner and ambiance. We ordered the salmon entree and a simple green salad. The entree was beautifully presented and creatively prepared. I have eaten in several Michelin starred restaurants, and this salmon dish with roasted cauliflower was right up there with the best. Every vegetable in the "simple green salad" tasted as if it had just been picked from the garden, and the vinaigrette was perfect. It was refreshing to have a waiter who was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. It was equally refreshing to be in a dining room with enough space between tables so you didn't have to hear others speaking. I highly recommend FIVE. Excellent value for the money."

  • "We have dinner at FIVE before a show every couple of months. The food is always vibrant and creative, with good flavors and interesting combinations. (One small quibble: consistently, the drinks arrive after the first food item arrives. On our most recent visit, when the restaurant/bar were very slow, it took a long time for our drinks to get started, and then they sat in plain view for several minutes before a waiter brought them to us, all while several staff members were bustling about.)"

  • "What a magnificent evening! We just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary with a romantic dinner here. The food, service, and ambiance were all impeccable. We started with the fresh buttermilk chive biscuits with honey butter and pimento cheese. The grilled peaches and sun-dried watermelon salad was sensational, but was surpassed (if that is possible) by the main course: scallops and calamari over risotto. The service was perfect. The next course would arrive just about the time when we were ready to move on to the evening's next culinary delight. Kudos to chef Stephane Tonnelier on what he has done at Five. It's a bright star in the firmament of Berkeley restaurants."

  • "FIVE has always been one of our favorite restaurants in downtown Berkeley, so we were surprised by our most experience. Our first courses of a salad with figs and flat bread, and a cauliflower and potato soup were excellent. However, the halibut main course that 2 of us at the table had was terrible- it was so over-cooked and dry that it could not be easily cut with a fork. Also, it was barely warm. We complained to our server, but we really should have sent it back to the kitchen or asked that it be removed from our bill. Restaurants can have off nights and make mistakes, but this was a serious lapse by the chef. We hope that this was a one-time fluke because FIVE has been so good in our past visits."

  • "I wanted to come here for the burrata and was disappointed to find out it was no longer on the menu (although Open Table still has it listed). So we ordered the gruyere puffs off the bar menu instead. Wonderful, light little gems. I'm vegetarian and they accommodated my request for the gnocchi with a veg sauce instead of the wild boar. So happy I asked for the accommodation! I'm still dreaming of these puffs of heaven. Pan seared but still light and fluffy. The sauce that accompanied it was delicate and amazing. My husband was also pleased with his scallop dish. We had a 6:15 reservation on a Friday night and were seated right away. By 6:30 we had ordered drinks, apps and food. Overall great experience. I'm definitely coming back!"

The food was good and plentiful. I had gnocchi with wild boar ragu (delicious), others had pork cheeks with polenta (very good). Nice desserts and the drinks were just right."

  • "FIVE has a lovely setting and decor, and is very convenient for dining before or after Berkeley Rep..... and I really wanted it to be better. But everything--from confusion at the maitre d' stand, to slow/sporadic service, to disappointing entrees, to so-so dessert--seemed to indicate the need for better management overall. I don't think it would take much to whip this place into better shape..... just a firmer or more inspiring hand."

  • "Entress were good, appetiisers on the small side, better if you weren't charged for biscuits, and when I asked for bread, it never came, service seems a bit spotty and not trained, Napolean was good , but more stawberry short cake than Naplolean, steak was hightlight, like the space, good before theater with friends - reccommed not charging for biscuits and bread, larger salads and appetisers"

  • "I really like Five! I was surprised last Friday when we arrived for our 5:30 dinner reservation to have a quick meal before an early movie in the neighborhood. The restaurant was empty (just opening) and there were no other diners in the dining room for much of our visit. I had looked at the menus on the Open Table website and had already decided to order a hamburger off the "bar bites" menu and a Pilsner off the "happy hour" menu. When our bill arrived, we were charged full price for the beer and told that the "happy hour" drink prices apply only to drinks served in the bar. I've rechecked the "bar bites" and the "happy hour" menus on the Open Table website and this is not mentioned anywhere. :-("
